Matilda “Tillie” Davis 64, of St Joseph, passed away Monday, September 17, 2018 in St. Joseph. She was born September 13, 1954 in St. Joseph, daughter of Natividad “Nettie” & Jose Torres. She graduated from Lafayette High School and worked at Wal-Mart. Matilda “Tillie” was preceded in death by her father, Jose Torres, mother, Natividad “Nettie” Torres, sisters, Carmen Torres, Dorothy King, Genevieve “Jenny” Mozier. She is survived by daughters, Tiffany (Dwayne) Eidson of St. Joseph, Laurie Summers of St. Joseph, Dana Boatwright of St. Joseph, sons, James Davis Jr. of King City, MO, Donald Davis of King City, MO, Aaron Davis of St. Joseph, 19 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, sisters, Patricia Mesino of St. Joseph and Margaret Wilson, former husband, James Davis Sr. She will be cremated under the direction of the Rupp Funeral Home. Rosary to be recited at 6:00 p.m. Friday at Rupp Funeral Home with visitation following from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Memorials are requested to the American Cancer Society.
Clarence Louis Oswald
1930-2018
Clarence Louis Oswald, 88, Effingham, KS, passed away Monday, September 17, 2018 at the University of Kansas Medical Center surrounded by his family.
Funeral Services were held at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 21, 2018 at Coal Creek United Methodist Church, Valley Falls, KS with Rev. Gina Tyler, officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Cemetery, Effingham, KS. A visitation with the family was from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, Thursday evening, at the Becker Chapel, 3rd and George St., Effingham. Clarence was born on August 14, 1930 in Atchison, KS, the son of Willard and Mabel (Cobb) Oswald. He attended District 60 grade school and graduated from Atchison County Community High School (ACCHS) in Effingham. Clarence served in the 439th Engineer Construction Battalion of the US Army during the Korean War, from 1952-1954, building roads and clearing land in Korea. After serving his country, Clarence returned home to the Effingham area where he pursed his passion of farming with his wife, Ethel, by his side. Clarence was a member of the Coal Creek United Methodist Church, American Legion, and served as a 4-H leader; he enjoyed attending reunions with his fellow Army brothers, pheasant hunting, wolf drives, and working on old tractors. Clarence had even won a tractor pull event at the Atchison County Fair with his 1955 – 300 Farmall Tractor. Clarence’s greatest joy came from being with his family, whom he loved very much.
Clarence met his future wife, Ethel Grace Lentz, while attending Sunday School at the Coal Creek Church. They were later married on November 1, 1952 at the church.
Clarence is survived by his wife of almost 66 years, Ethel, of the family home in Effingham; his four sons and their families, James (Pamela) Oswald, Effingham, their son, Dustin (Tiffani) Oswald, their children, Parker and Whitaker; Chuck (Sheri) Oswald, Horton, KS, their children, Brian Oswald and Amber (Chuck) Cofield, their twins, Connor and Landon and younger son Efram; Lee (Melinda) Oswald, Effingham, their sons, Derek (Hayley) Oswald and daughter, Valerie, Trevor Oswald; Don (Sara) Oswald, West Branch, IA, and their twin children, Tyler and Rachel Oswald; sister, Helen Weishaar, Effingham.
Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Mabel Oswald; brother, Paul Oswald, and sister, Pauline Weidmaier.
Zachary Richard Armontrout

Zachary Richard Armontrout, 16, Rushville, MO, died Monday, September 17, 2018 at the University of Kansas Medical Center, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Sunday.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be 7:00 pm, Friday, September 21, 2018 at St. Benedict’s Abbey Church on the Benedictine College Campus, with Fr. Jeremy Heppler, OSB and Fr. Zach was born on June 13, 2002 in St. Joseph, MO, the son of Gerald R. ‘Jerry’ and Kelly (Burkart) Armontrout. Zach was a junior at Maur Hill Mount Academy High School. Zach was liked by all who met him and his outgoing personality was evident as he welcomed new students attending Maur Hill Mount Academy. His friendships extended to classmates from all over the world. Zach played soccer his first two years while at Maur Hill Mount Academy, being sidelined from playing this year due to having surgery earlier in the year. Zach also loved to work out and his ambition was to become a personal trainer. Zach and his brother Darren enjoyed having marathon ‘gaming’ sessions (video). Zach also loved being ‘Uncle Zachy’ to his nieces and nephews; Lexi, Addie, Connor, Jackson, Anna and Carter.
Survivors include his parents, Jerry and Kelly Armontrout, Rushville; brother, Darren Armontrout (Beth Siard); sisters, Marissa (Billy) Spilman, Caralyne (Chad) Servaes, Katy Armontrout (Cameron Wood); maternal grandparents, Gary and Eileen Burkart, Atchison, and his nieces and nephews.

Angela Mary Hegarty
1937-2018
Angela Mary Hegarty, 80, passed away peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 17, 2018, surrounded by her family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:00 am, Saturday, September 22, 2018 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Effingham, KS with Abbot James Albers, OSB as Celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery. Angela will lie in state at the Becker-Chapel, Effingham on Friday, September 21, 2018 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. A parish rosary will be recited at the church at 6:30 pm with visitation to follow until 8:30 pm. She lived a full and content life. She was the fifth child of Matthias & Elizabeth (Theis) Sittenauer. She was born and grew up in Atchison, KS. She attended Mount St. Scholastica Academy in Atchison, graduating in 1955. She married her beloved Eugene C. Hegarty on March 5, 1957. Her first child Mary Janelle was born that year on Christmas day. She had two more Christmas children, which made Christmas time very special in the Hegarty household. In addition to Janelle (Ken Kranz), she gave birth to Michael Eugene (Cathy), Mark Clarence (Janelle), Timothy Charles (Stephanie), Sandra Ann (Mike Engeman), and Terrence John (Rebecca), all of whom survive.
She also leaves behind twenty-six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, one brother George Sittenauer, three sisters, Betty Albers, Mary Kay Harris and Judy Curtis, two sisters in law, Shirley Cole and Sharon Hegarty, and countless friends from both Effingham, where she lived with Gene most of her life, and Atchison. Gene preceded her in 2013 as did brothers Charles, Gene and Ken, and infant James. Gene and Angela were life-long devoted parishioners at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Effingham, a parish they loved dearly.

Carolyn Hayes, 81, of St. Joseph, passed away September 17, 2018 in St. Joseph.
Ms. Hayes has been cremated under the care of Rupp Funeral Home.

Betty Ellen Denton
1935-2018
Betty Ellen (Hammersmark) Denton, 83, of Denton, Kansas passed away at her home on September 13, 2018. Betty was born on June 3, 1935 to Reinert and Petra (Knudson) Hammersmark in Horton, Kansas. She graduated from Denton High School in 1953 and worked for Southwestern Bell in Topeka until marrying Jack B. Denton on June 23, 1957. After their marriage they made their home on the family farm in Denton. Betty enjoyed puzzles, quilting, baking, being involved with the Ladies of the Abdallah Shrine Temple, and spending time with family and friends, as well as, traveling with Jack throughout the United States and abroad. She was a member of the Denton United Methodist Church, Cheerio EHU, Sewing Club, a Republican committeewoman, and was the Union Township 4-H Club Leader for many years. She was a 61 year member of the Order of Eastern Star having served as Worthy Matron of the Huron Chapter and District Aide, District # 1 and amazingly held an office consecutively for 60 years in her chapters most recently as chaplain of the Wathena Chapter #413. We celebrate her life and cherish the many memories she created for family and friends over her lifetime. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jack of 54 years and a sister Roberta Metzger Kern. She is survived by four daughters, Shari (Warren) Bauman, Wathena, KS; Dee Anna (Jim) Maher, Kansas City, MO; Debbie (Bob) Paulbeck, Overland Park, KS; Jane (Rod Rumpf) Gabriel, St. Joseph, MO; three sons, Jack Bryan Denton, Denton, KS; William (Dawn) Denton, Solomon, KS; and Christopher (Audrey) Denton, Denton, KS; one sister Joan Luthro, Olathe, KS; three sister-in-laws Shirley Reece, Estes Park, CO, Patricia (Patrick) Donaldson, Effingham, KS, and Thelma Denton, Overland Park, KS; twenty grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Betty’s wish was to be cremated.
A memorial service honoring Betty will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 30, 2018 followed by visitation until 7:00 p.m. at the Harman-Rohde Funeral Home, Wathena, Kansas. A private joint interment of Betty and Jack will be held at a later date at the Denton Cemetery. Elwood, Kansas – Lucille Ann Lewman, 72, of Elwood, Kansas passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at the Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Lucille was born on June 8, 1946 in Troy, Kansas to Alvin Guy & Florence (Madden) Wood.
She graduated Troy High School & worked as a bridal Consultant for many years & later working for Wal-mart.
Lucille married Winston Lewman on October 9, 1965 in Miami, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on September 15, 2003. She was also preceded in death by her parents.

TROY, KANSAS – Vivian (Thornton) Middleton, 85, of Troy, Kansas went to be with her Lord and Savior, Friday, September 21, 2018.
Vivian was born on June 24, 1933 in Troy, Kansas to Robert “Ed” and Ada (Lewis) Thornton. She lived all of her life in Troy. Vivian worked for the Natural Resource & Conservation Office in Troy for 30 years and retired in 1996 as the Office Manager.
She is a member of the First Baptist Church in Troy, Kansas
Vivian married Eugene “Gene” Middleton on May 23, 1950 in Burr Oak. He preceded her in death on March 29, 2011. She was also preceded by her parents and a daughter, Carol J. King in 2009.

James Michael “Peaches” Piper, 34, of Lancaster, KS, passed away Thursday, September 20, 2018.

Peaches was born on July 29, 1984 in Atchison, KS the son of William and Barbara (Morris) Piper. He worked for Northern Pipe Line as a heavy equipment operator, Union101. Peaches was a member of First Christian Church, and earned the Life Rank in Boy Scouts. He enjoyed race cars, fishing, shooting blue rock and doing body work on cars. Peaches especially enjoyed just hanging out.

Sharon K. (Bennett) Spicer
1952-2018
On Monday, September 24, 2018, Sharon K. Spicer passed away at home surrounded by her family. She will be remembered by her friends and family for her love of animals, mystery novels, and Mexican food, devotion to her parents, outings to the riverboat casinos, and, above all, her determined fight against cancer.
The daughter of Dorothy and Elbert Bennett, Sharon was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, on July 17, 1952. Sharon grew up in Faucett, Missouri, near her aunt and uncle, Evelyn and Gene Farris, and cousins Fred, Mike, and Sandy, whom she remained close to throughout her life. She was proceeded in death by her parents and her beloved four-legged companion, Nikki. Sharon is survived by her daughter, Veronica L. Spicer; brother, Rodney Bennett; sister-in-law, Margaret Bennett; and numerous cousins and nephews.
Family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Rupp Funeral Home. A graveside funeral service and interment will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 26, 2018, at the Faucett Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to celebrate Sharon’s life at a reception at the family home, starting immediately after the service until 7 p.m.

Dale Reed Campbell
1923-2018
Dale Reed Campbell, 95, died peacefully at Apostolic Christian Retirement Home in Sabetha, Kansas on September 24, 2018 with his daughter by his side. The oldest of Herbert and Winifred Kipp Campbell’s five children, he was born February 12, 1923 and loved life in Horton and Hiawatha. Health forced his move to Sabetha’s Apostolic Christian Retirement Home in 2012.
A 1941 graduate of Horton High School, Mr. Campbell served in the U.S. Army
during World War II, farmed in Horton’s Mount Pleasant area for 18 years (1946-1964),
ran a Phillips 66 gas station in Hiawatha for 5 years, managed the Brown County Co-
Op Gas and Tire Shop in Hiawatha for 16 years, then engaged in day labor farming and
hauling water to fertilizer trucks for the Co-Op during early years of his retirement. He
was a member of the Horton United Methodist Church, Homer White Post 66 of the
Hiawatha American Legion, Post 5210 of Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Brown
County Historical Society.
His passions were his family and friends, story-telling and laughter. He loved
presiding as patriarch of Campbell family gatherings. A go-to homemade ice cream
maker for the Historical Society and Hiawatha Ice Cream Socials for many years, Dale
will be remembered as honest, gentle, humble, funny, kind, and optimistic, the most
plainly decent gentleman anyone could ever hope to meet. No one in his family can
remember him ever saying an unkind or critical word about anybody.
He lived a good, long life, the kind of life good men are supposed to lead. He will
be missed and never forgotten.
Survivors include daughter and granddaughter, Jacki Campbell Jacoby and
Maria Lucy Merkel of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; sister Janet Meyers of Wichita,
Kansas; brother Don (and wife, LaVerne) Campbell of Falls City, Nebraska; brother-in law
Dick Banks (and wife, Pat) of Topeka, Kansas; and many extended family members
and friends.
He was preceded in death by wives Verda June Banks Campbell and Frances
Louise Brown Woodruff Campbell, both of whom were born and raised in Whiting,
Kansas, brother Keith Campbell and sister Shirley Campbell Hosford, both of Horton,
Kansas, as well as many beloved friends.
Family Visitation will be from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Friday, September 28, 2018 at Chapel
Oaks Mortuary, 124 S. 7th Street, Hiawatha, KS, 66434.
The Service of Remembrance and Celebration will be held at Horton’s First United Methodist Church, 130 E 10th Street, Horton, KS 66439, at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 29, 2018. Internment with military honors will be at the Horton Cemetery and a luncheon following in the church’s Fellowship Hall.

Alice Marie Pierceall
1960-2018
Alice Marie Pierceall 58, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, September 23, 2018. She was born August 10, 1960 in Columbia, MO, daughter of the late Donna and Paul Brower Jr. She graduated from Gravit Holiness School. She married Wayne on May 30, 1998 and he survives of the home. She worked at Walmart – Mexico, MO in the fabric department. She was very involved in her church and loved to read. She also enjoyed cross stitch, embroidering, quilting, and sewing. Alice was a member of the Keys Christian Fellowship Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, and twin sister, Donna Ruth Speckles. Survivors include, husband, Wayne Pierceall of the home. daughter, Karen (Austin) Bovey, Dallas, TX, step daughters, Angela and Isis Dawn, 7 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, step brother, Paul Brower Jr. sisters, Beverly Brower, Clara (Ryan) Clark, and Paula Brower, and a step sister. Stanley W. Richtarik
1948-2018
Stanley W. Richtarik, 69, of Holton, died Sunday, September 23, 2018 at the Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.
He was born December 15, 1948 in Lincoln, Nebraska, the son of Stanley E. and Irene Filipi Richtarik. He graduated high school in Wilber, Nebraska in 1967.
Stan was a U.S. Army combat veteran, having served in the Viet Nam War. He received the Purple Heart Medal and was disabled from his wartime service.
He was member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.
He married Melisse Moberly on April 8, 1982 in Kansas City, KS. She survives, of the home.
Stan was preceded in death by his father Stanley and two brothers, Russell Allen Richtarik, who died in infancy, and Michael C. Richtarik.
Other survivors include his mother, Irene Richtarik, of Wilber, NE; two sons, Joshua Richtarik (Melissa), of Manhattan and Ian Richtarik (Connie), of Hiawatha; one brother, Ronnie Richtarik, of Wilber, NE and two sisters, Connie Maas (Melvin) and Lori Lynch (David), both of Wilber, NE and forty-four nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
Memorial services with military honors will be Saturday, October 6th in Wilber, NE. The time and place for the service will be announced soon. Graveside services and inurnment with military honors will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 9th at the St. Clere Cemetery. Martha Ellen Reeder
1920-2018
A Life Well-Lived!
Martha Ellen was born November 10, 1920 in rural Indiana. She attended country schools before moving to a farm near Shelbyville, Indiana. On the school bus she was frequently taunted about her flaming red hair. She graduated in 1942 from Indiana University, with Honors as a Business Major. Her high college grades and drive to succeed secured her a job in Washington DC with the FBI working directly with J. Edgar Hoover as his secretary. In the Washington DC bureau of the FBI she met her husband, Special Agent Robert A. Reeder. They were married on September 24, 1944. Subsequently, Martha worked as secretary to columnist Drew Pearson in Washington DC. They moved to Mr. Reeder’s hometown, Troy, Kansas, in January 1948 to begin domestic life. Martha lived in Troy KS for the majority of her adult life, moving to the Kansas City area in 2004.
In Troy, she was active in SLK, Order of Eastern Star, United Methodist Women, the National Button Society, Missouri Button Society, and many other volunteer groups. Martha enjoyed collecting buttons and won National Awards for her button collection displays. As the mother of four children, Martha attended hundreds of her daughter’s activities. She learned to drive a car so that she could take her daughters to lessons, practices, school, meetings, and shopping. Martha was primarily a mother, homemaker and volunteer but also worked as a Secretary/Personal Assistant to William Muchnic, Atchison KS in the late 1960’s until 1972.
Over the decades, Martha and her husband Robert A. Reeder enjoyed traveling. In addition to overseas trips, Park Rapids, Minnesota and South Padre Island, Texas were her favorite destinations.
Martha loved to play bridge and was a member of the Nueve Bridge Club in Troy. She also played bridge while living at Kingswood Senior Living in Kansas City, MO. Throughout her life she had a “green thumb” and could make any plant grow and thrive. She had an abundance of plants and flowers in her home wherever she lived.
Her husband Robert A. Reeder passed away in 2008. She is survived and missed by 4 daughters, Ellen Reeder (Bob Johnson) of Texas; Mary Blake of Wichita, KS; Pat Reeder (Bruce Woner) of Topeka KS and Kay Reeder Lloyd (Dennis Lloyd) of Leawood, KS, also 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. A private family graveside service was held on September 29, 2018 at Mount Olive Cemetery, Troy, KS.
