Tragedy averted:

Ten-year-old Xavier had been playing in his treehouse in Harrisonville, Missouri, when a swarm of yellowjackets began to attack him and his friends.

As the boys scrambled to get down the ladder, Xavier fell onto a rotisserie skewer the boys had just found in a field and stuck into the ground.

Rather than sending him directly to surgery, doctors spent hours gathering information from brain surgeons – ENT’s and other specialists – preparing for a surgery that was about as delicate as it could be.

The Amelia Earhart U.S. Post Office Act, renames Earhart’s hometown post office in Atchison, Kansas, in her honor. The legislation was introduced by U.S. Senator Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) in the Senate and Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins (R-Kan.) in the House in November 2017.

“Amelia Earhart was one of the great pioneers of our nation, whose story began at home in Atchison,” said Senator Roberts. “She is an inspiration to all aviators and a role model to women around the world. Renaming this post office is one more way to honor her incredible legacy.”

“Although she was tragically lost at sea while attempting a flight around the world, Amelia Earhart’s legacy still soars today,” said Congresswoman Jenkins. “Growing up in Kansas, Amelia Earhart’s courageous actions inspired me, and many others, to dream big and accomplish lofty goals. It is only right that we rename her hometown post office in her honor, to continue her legacy and inspire future generations.”

Before Amelia Earhart became an aviation hero, she grew up in her family’s home – called the Otis house after her grandfather – and lived there until the age of twelve. Although she lived in several different cities, she always considered Atchison her hometown and the town is proud to be one of the few tangible associations with the legend.

Brief: A Month of Rain, Immigration in KS House Race, American Idol in KC

Immigration becomes a pivotal issue in one Kansas race for the House of Representatives.

Yoder is under pressure from the right despite an endorsement from Trump, and he backed away this week from supporting a Democratic proposal to ensure that immigrants fleeing domestic and gang violence can claim asylum.

Democrat Sharice Davids continues to battle GOP ads that say she supports abolishing ICE. She did say that during a liberal podcast interview in July but has disavowed that position, including in a recent television ad.

Another incident at another prison in the region.

Crossroads Correctional Center in Cameron is struggling to recover from the May 12 riot. The facility houses about 1,500 medium and maximum security inmates.

“Truly, the Crossroads situation is unprecedented in Missouri,” state Department of Corrections spokeswoman Karen Pojmann wrote in an email. “We have never before faced such utter destruction on the scale that occurred … and I’m not aware of any comparable situation in another state.”

Abnormal rain totals quenched the region the last month.

American Idol auditions were in Kansas City yesterday.

Lettuce Dream to hold BLT Festival fundraiser

A Maryville organization that puts the ‘L’ in ‘BLT’ will be holding a fundraiser based around the sandwich.

Lettuce Dream will be holding a Bacon Lettuce and Tomato Festival this weekend.

Lettuce Dream Board President Diane Francis said the non-profit organization was started by a group of individuals in Nodaway County.

“There was a group that came together and looked at the need that we have in this area, as well as across the country, where individuals with developmental disabilities, after high school, there was really not a lot of opportunities to gain skill or to work into possible employment in their community,” Francis said.

According to Lettuce Dream Director Charlie Clodfelter, there are currently eight interns in the program and a total of 15 have gone through the program in the last year. Hydroponic lettuce and herbs are grown in a 6,720 square foot greenhouse and production facility for wholesale distribution to grocery stores, restaurants, schools, hospitals and nursing homes.

All proceeds from the upcoming BLT Festival will allow Lettuce Dream to continue fulfilling its mission of providing training opportunities for young adults with cognitive or developmental disabilities.

The Bacon Lettuce and Tomato Festival will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. on Friday and from 4 to 10 p.m. on Saturday at Backyard Vine and Wine at 30484 Icon Road in Maryville.

In addition to BLTs at the festival, there will be games, a silent auction and live music. Anyone attending is encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.
