(UPDATE) Authorities investigating South Belt U.S. Bank robbery

(UPDATE 4:13 p.m. Friday) Surveillance photos have been released as an investigation continues into a bank robbery in St. Joseph Friday afternoon.

According to the FBI, the suspect is described as a white male, approximately 6 feet tall and 250-300 lbs, wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt wrapped around his head and black pants. He displayed a weapon and fled the bank with an undisclosed amount of money.

He was last seen leaving in a dark green 2000 Isuzu SUV with plastic covering the rear window. The vehicle has since been reported stolen.

Authorities are investigating after a bank robbery Friday afternoon.

According to Capt. Jeff Wilson with the St. Joseph Police Department, the robbery occurred shortly before 1 p.m. at the U.S. Bank at 2701 South Belt.

As of 2 p.m., no one was in custody.

The investigation has been turned over to the FBI. We’ll provide more information as it becomes available.

U.S. Route 36 lane closures begin next week

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Motorists on U.S. Route 36 will encounter single-lane traffic in various locations beginning next week.

James H. Drew Corporation, working with the Missouri Department of Transportation plan to close one lane in order to safely work on sections of guardrail both on the roadside and in the median between 1.4 miles east of Route N in DeKalb County and the Buchanan County line.

Work will begin Monday, April 16th, and is scheduled to continue through mid-May. They plan to work from approximately 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day, Monday through Thursday.

During the work drivers may experience delays. The project is weather dependent and could be rescheduled.

Missouri Western’s Dr. Clary receives Governor’s Award

St. Joseph, Mo. – Dr. Pam Clary is Missouri Western State University’s recipient of the 2018 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Education.

According to a press release from Missouri Western, Dr. Clary, assistant professor and director of social work, received her award at a luncheon with Lt. Gov. Mike Parson in Jefferson City last week.

“Dr. Pam Clary has a reputation as an excellent teacher, academic advisor, mentor and social worker,” reads her award nomination. “She employs a variety of teaching strategies that engage students in active learning and students benefit from her push for them to reach their potential.”

Dr. Clary’s teaching and advising of social work students at Missouri Western has influenced them to become service-minded professionals. She is the faculty advisor for the campus Organization of Student Social Workers which recently received the 2017 award for Best Fundraising Event by the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness for their Walk Against Hunger event that raised thousands of dollars locally.

Dr. Clary has been on Missouri Western’s faculty since 2007. She received her Bachelor of Social Work from Kansas State University, her Master of Social Work from the University of Kansas and her Ph.D. from Kansas State University. In addition to her teaching experience, she has more than 17 years of direct clinical experience.

The Governor’s Award for Excellence in Education is given annually to one faculty member from each public university across the state.

Lions Club 65th Annual Pancake Days going on this weekend

The 65th year of Pancake Days in St. Joseph is this weekend.

Brad Campbell with the St. Joseph Host Lions Club said this is their largest fundraiser of the year.

“A lot of people know the Lions Clubs here in town regarding our fruit sales, our Pancake Days and between all of our events, the three Lions Clubs here in our community, we put back over 25-30,000 every year back into our community through local donations,” Campbell said. “This has always been a great event for us. People turn out, it’s a very family fun-oriented event on the Pancake Days. Pair up against your sibling, find out how many pancakes you can eat at one time… bragging rights for a year.”

All you can eat pancakes and sausages will be served for $7 at the door. Milk, juice and coffee will also be available.

The funds raised go toward the Lion’s mission for sight research, area charities and eye glasses for St. Joseph Community members that need them.

The Annual Lions Club Pancake Days run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday at the East Hills Mall in the Food Court.

Breckenridge teen in the hospital after being hit by ATV

A Breckenridge teen was seriously injured when he was hit by an ATV Thursday evening.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 14-year-old Eric C. Morgan was walking on Main Street east of 6th Street in Breckenridge at 5:45 p.m. When he crossed the street he was hit by an ATV driven by 14-year-old Caden N. Warren of Breckenridge. Morgan was transported to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City for treatment of serious injuries.

According to the crash report, Warren was not injured.

Former SJSD employee charged with stealing from PTA

The St. Joseph School District has issued a statement regarding felony stealing charges against a former employee.

According to the statement, the School District learned of the allegations against 39-year-old Brian M. Smith on February 1, 2018.

According to a probable cause statement dated April 2, 2018, Smith was the treasurer for the Parkway Elementary School Parent Teacher Association. According to witness statements and documentation provided by the victim, Smith was responsible for the PTA’s bank account and finances.

From November 2016 until January 2018, Smith used the organization’s debit card to make over 50 unauthorized purchases or ATM withdrawals from the PTA bank account totaling $10,869.12. The transactions were determined to be for personal use and not on behalf of or for the PTA.

According to the School District, no school funds were found to be involved. The PTA funds at the center of the allegations were designated for use in the school for the benefit of Parkway Elementary teachers and students.

The investigation was turned over to the St. Joseph Police Department on February 2nd.

Smith is no longer employed by the St. Joseph School District.

Police asking for help identifying robbery suspect

The St. Joseph Police Department is asking for help identifying a suspect in a Dollar General robbery over the weekend.

According to the police department, the Dollar General located at 3323 St. Joseph Avenue was robbed Sunday evening.

The suspect is described as a white male, stocky build, wearing a black hooded coat, gray pants and a black mask with eye, nose and mouth holes. He was armed with a black semi-automatic handgun. He was last seen getting into a white Pontiac G6 described as being clean and in good shape with tinted windows and Missouri tags.

Man in custody after vehicle pursuit

A St. Joseph man was taken into custody after a vehicle pursuit involving a stolen vehicle.

Sgt. Wayne Byrom with the St. Joseph Police Department said the vehicle pursuit began around 11:45 Wednesday night. The suspect was involved in a shots fired call unrelated to the Harvard Street shots fired incident around the same time. He then stole a vehicle and fled the area.

Sgt. Byrom said the pursuit started in the area of King Hill Ave. and East Lake Boulevard and ended south of the city limits in the county.

No one was injured.
