Chance of rain and possible severe storms this afternoon

Strong to severe storms are expected to develop this afternoon in eastern KS, and will both spread and develop eastward with time. These storms could produce large hail, damaging winds, and a few tornadoes; however, the most likely and most widespread hazard will be flash flooding, which is possible this evening through midweek. Here’s the 7-day forecast from the National Weather Service: 

Today: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5 p.m. Some of the storms could be severe. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 73. Calm wind becoming east 5 to 8 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 10%.

Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms likely, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 8 p.m. Some storms could be severe, with heavy rain. Low around 55. Northeast wind 6 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Tuesday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 11 a.m., then showers likely between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5 p.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Cloudy, with a high near 61. Northeast wind 11 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tuesday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Low around 58. East wind 10 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Wednesday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. High near 71. East southeast wind 11 to 13 mph becoming south southwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Wednesday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 2 a.m., then a chance of showers. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Low around 47. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Thursday: A chance of showers before 8 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 58. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 42.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 65.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 46.

NW Missouri teen hospitalized after car hits tree

CLINTON COUNTY — One person was injured in an accident just before 3:30p.m. Sunday in Clinton County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Toyota Scion driven by MaKayla K. Provin, 16, Cameron, was southbound on U.S. 69 four miles east of Lathrop.

The vehicle traveled off the west side of the road and the driver overcorrected. The vehicle returned to the road, traveled off the road again and struck a tree.

Tri-County Ambulance transported Provin to Liberty Hospital. She was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

NW Missouri man hospitalized after ATV overturns

HARRISON COUNTY — One person was injured in an accident just before 12:30p.m. Sunday in Harrison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a Honda Rancher 4-wheeler driven by Gary D. Hill, 66, McFall, was westbound on 355th Avenue six miles north of New Hampton.

The vehicle traveled off the south side of the road, overturned and struck a fence.

NTA Ambulance District transported Hill to Liberty Hospital. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the MSHP.

Planned road work for northwest Missouri, May 6 – 12

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The following is a list of general highway maintenance and construction work the Missouri Department of Transportation has planned in the Northwest Missouri region for the week of May 6 – 12.

Continued flooding may cause schedule changes in some of the planned work. There may also be moving operations throughout the region such as pothole patching, striping, signal work, etc., in addition to the work mentioned below.

All work is weather permitting and subject to change.

Andrew County

Route O – CLOSED at the Platte River Bridge for a bridge replacement project. The bridge will be closed through the end of September. Click here for more info.

Business U.S. 71 – Resurfacing project from Main Street in Savannah to just south of Interstate 29, May 6 – 10. One lane, each direction, will remain open at all times. This project will continue, Monday through Friday, through mid-May. A 14-foot width restriction is in place.

I-29 – Bridge joint repair, southbound only, at the Nodaway River Bridge, May 6 – 12. This includes a 12-foot width restriction.

Route V – CLOSED for a culvert replacement from Route Z to Route UU, May 7, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Trenton man dies after motorcycle crash

DAVIESS COUNTY — One person died in an accident just before 1p.m. Saturday in Daviess County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Harley Davidson Motorcycle driven by Richard L. Moore, 61, Trenton, was southbound on M-13 one mile south of Coffey

The motorcycle traveled off the west side of the road, struck a guardrail, overturned and the driver was ejected. Moore was transported to Harrison County Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the MSHP.

Richard Pistole
1934 – 2019

Richard Pistole, 84, of St. Joseph, died May 2, 2019.

Richard was born November 28, 1934, in Conway, Iowa, to Harry and Francis (Drum) Pistole. He served in the Army National Guard from 1953 and retired in 1976 with the rank of Master Sergeant. He graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, MO; with a Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching and a minor in accounting. He first worked as a public accountant for Gasper & Taylor. He owned and operated Narrow Way Christian Book Store, and retired as an Industrial Arts teacher with Buchanan County R-4. Richard was a member of Deer Park Grace Methodist Church and the National Horseshoe Pitching Association. After retirement he owned and operated New Horizon Cabinet Refinishing. He married Mary Ruth “Ruthie” Zook on August 26, 1956 in Skidmore, MO, and she survives of the home. Also surviving are his children, Vickie Pike (Vernon), Kevin Pistole (Kim), Kristina Hulsey (Matt); six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister Marjorie Roush (Lester, Jr.); other relatives and friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association would be appreciated.

Services will be Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Deer Park Methodist Church in St. Joseph. Burial with military honors will follow at Nodaway Memorial Gardens in Maryville. Visitation will begin Tuesday after 12:00 noon at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel in St. Joseph, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Barbara Jean Bailey, 61, of St. Joseph, passed away Friday, May 3, 2019 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph.

She was born May 18, 1957 in Kansas City, MO, daughter of Mary Ann and Robert Hughes. She attended East High School in Kansas City. She married William Bailey on December 29, 1977. Barb enjoyed collecting crystal, loved shopping, and was an avid wrestling fan.

Barbara was preceded in death by father, Robert Hughes, and mother, Mary Ann Allman-Clark.

Survivors include, husband, William Bailey of the home, daughter, Marie (Steven) Ross of St. Joseph, grandchildren, Whitley, Marissa, Steven Jr., Elliott, Brittanie, Eric, D-Angelo, A-Leah, great-granddaughter, Tez-Lynn, sister, Theresa Rodriguez, brother, Melvin Allman, sister, Mary Jo Johnson, sister, Debra McGhee, brother, William Allman, sister, Mildred Allman, brother, Kevin Allman, and sister, Betty Allman.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at the Rupp Funeral Home. Mrs. Bailey will be cremated following visitation.

Lola was born on January 6, 1936 in Troy, Kansas to Nile & Ina (Simpson) Smith. Lola worked as a housekeeping supervisor, retiring after 23 years at Parklane Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers,(Twin brother) Charles, Kenneth, & Keith Smith, sister, Patricia Stewart.

Marilyn Kunzler
1949 – 2019

Marilyn Kunzler 70, of St. Joseph, passed away Thursday, May 2, 2019 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph . Marilyn Miller (Merm) was born February 8, 1949 in Russell, Kansas. She was the daughter of Maxwell and Vivian (Dawson) Miller.

Marilyn was born into a musical family hearing from an early age music played and sung by her siblings and parents. She began learning piano from her grandmother. Marilyn’s love of music was encouraged with vocal and flute lessons. During her high school years, Marilyn won recognition at district and state music contests in both instrumental and vocal divisions. Marilyn was known for her sense of humor and sharing herself with others. She volunteered at the Russell City Library, was active in Russell Congregational Church, the Order of Rainbow for Girls, Girl Scouts, and many school organizations. She graduated from Russell High School in 1967 and from Fort Hays State College in 1972, where she majored in music. She was a member of the music honors society Sigma Alpha Iota and worked in the music department library. She taught elementary music in Northeast Kansas schools including Troy, later working as a counselor in Wathena, having earned a Master’s Degree from Fort Hays State University in 1979. She married Dwayne Kunzler on January 10, 2004, joining him in their music business and teaching lessons to many children and adults. Before her last illness, she was giving flute, piano, and voice lessons.

Marilyn was preceded in death by father, Max Miller, mother, Vivian Miller.

Survivors include, husband, Edward Dwayne Kunzler, Sr. of St Joseph, brother, Tim Miller of Hays, KS, brother, Doyle (Betty Smith) Miller of Branson, MO, sister, Gwendolyn Johnson of Hays, KS, sister, Emilie Miller of Elk Grove Village, IL, brother-in-law, Roger (Gail) Kunzler of Agency, MO, step-daughter, Tania Dawn Clymer of Saint Joseph, MO, step-daughter, Kimberly (Jack) Wright of Amazonia, MO, step-son, Edward Dwayne Kunzler, Jr. of Pennington Gap, VA, sister in-law, Kathy (Samuel) Cupp, 11 grandchildren, Allison, Ashley, Hannah, Haylee, Hudson, Jackson, Madison, Makayla, Samantha, Sierra and Stephanie, great-granddaughter, Courtlynn and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Doris Jean Reed
1934 – 2019

Doris Jean Reed, 84, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, May 2, 2019.

She was born October 1, 1934, in Carson, Iowa to Lawrence and Lorene Larsen. Doris married Eugene Reed on October 30, 1954, and were married for 49 years prior to his death in 2003. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Doris’ creativity and sense of adventure were boundless. She was a wonderful cook, known especially for her fresh-baked pies, a talented tole painter, and an excellent seamstress. She loved adventure, including; traveling, zip lining, fearlessly riding roller coasters, and was always ready to try anything new and exciting. Doris will also be remembered for her love of all animals, especially the many dogs she gave a loving home to throughout her life. Her most important endeavors were to be the best wife and mother she could be.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband Gene, an infant son, Bryce Wiley Reed, daughter; Pamela Reed, sisters; Lois Clark, Mary Ann Christansen, and brother, Bruce Larsen.

Survivors include daughters; Brenda Martin (Andy Fergison), Terri Townsend (Charles), and Lynn Miller (Paul).

Natural Farewell under the direction of Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Doris believed that life should be celebrated and not mourned. Missouri Western, Northwest spring commencement ceremonies this weekend

Spring commencement ceremonies for both Missouri Western State University and Northwest Missouri State take place this weekend.

The Spring Commencement Ceremony for more than 500 graduates of Missouri Western will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday on Craig Field at Spratt Memorial Stadium.

According to a press release, in the event the ceremony can’t be held outdoors because of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. inside the Looney.

Northwest expects more than 1,000 students to receive degrees at its spring commencement ceremonies.

According to the university, the ceremonies begin at 7 p.m. Friday in Bearcat Arena when Northwest confers bachelor’s degrees in its School of Education in addition to master’s and education specialist degrees.

The University honors bachelor’s degree candidates from the School of Communication and Mass Media, the School of Computer Science and Information Systems, the School of Agricultural Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Bearcat Arena. At 2 p.m., bachelor’s degree candidates representing the Melvin D. & Valorie G. Booth School of Business and the School of Health Science and Wellness will be honored.

DC recognizes Northwest Missouri State basketball national championship, undefeated season

Washington has recognized Northwest Missouri State University for winning the NCAA Division II men’s national basketball championship.

The United States Senate unanimously approved a resolution honoring the Bearcats for winning their second national basketball championship and posting a perfect 38-0 season.

“The Bearcats were unstoppable this season, earning another national championship and finishing the year with a perfect record,” U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt said in a written statement released by his office. “Congratulations to the players, coaches, and fans on another great season. I look forward to seeing what this team can accomplish next year.”

“Missouri is proud of the Bearcats’ fantastic season, and we congratulate them on everything they were able to accomplish as a team,” U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley said in a written statement. “The effort and determination by these young men does not go unnoticed. Keep up the great work and good luck next year!”

Northwest defeated Point Loma Nazarene University in March 64-58 to cap the undefeated season. Northwest was only the 5th Division II program to finish a perfect season as national champions. Northwest won its first men’s basketball championship in 2017.
