He was a Construction Worker and Security Guard for Wells Fargo. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War. He is survived by children, Scott (Carrie) Ingram, Jr., and Kelly Ingram both of St. Joseph, MO, 7 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and several brothers & sisters. Military Graveside services, 10:00 AM, Tuesday, April 25, 2017, Leavenworth National Cemetery. He will be cremated under the care of the Rupp Funeral Home. Eugene “Gene” Francis Miller

unnamedEugene F. “Gene” Miller, 87 years young, of Atchison, Kansas, died peacefully in his sleep on Easter Sunday at his home.
Mass of Christian burial will be Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Joseph’s Church with Abbot Barnabas Senecal, OSB as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A Parish and Knights of Columbus rosary will be recited on Wednesday, April 19, at 6:00 P.M. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 7:30 P.M. Memorial contributions are suggested to Mount St. Scholastica Monastery or St. Benedict Parish and may be left in care of the funeral home.
Gene was born February 20, 1930 in Atchison, Kansas the son of Henry Albert and Irmina C. Schletzbaum Miller. He attended St. Benedict’s School and graduated from Maur Hill High School. He then attended classes at a vocational school in the electrical department and became a journeyman electrician.
He and Mary E. “Beth” Wagner were united in marriage on June 2, 1956, by Fr. Matthew Hall at St. Joseph’s Church.
Gene was employed with Mount St. Scholastica until 1972 when he began working for Schultz Electrical Company in St. Joseph, Missouri as a journeyman electrician retiring at the age of sixty-two in 1992.
He was a member of St. Benedict Parish where he participated at St. Joseph’s Church and was a member of Sacred Heart Council #723 of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the IBEW Electrical Union of St. Joseph, Missouri.
In his spare time he enjoyed playing golf, gardening with Beth, bowling, fishing, wine making, mushroom hunting, traveling the country with his wife, spending time with family and friends, attending coffee club at CVS, and he enjoyed time outside “taking care of a bad habit” as he often told his children. He was also widely known as a handy man who was a “fixer” of all things.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-one years, Mary E. “Beth” Miller, Atchison, KS; two sons, Phillip (AnaMaria) Miller, Overland Park, KS; Henry J. “Hank” Miller, Merriam, KS; three daughters, Ruth A. (Lee) Eckert, Atchison, KS; Peggy (David) Howard, Leavenworth, KS; Sara Miller, Prairie Village, KS; two sisters, Sr. Irmina Miller, OSB, Atchison, KS; Alberta Prohaska, Atchison, KS; six grandchildren and a large extended family.
Gene was preceded in death by three brothers, Louis Miller, John Miller, Leo Miller and a sister, Mary Cecilia Patton.
The family wishes to personally thank Kevin & Marcy Handke, and Peggy Davis, for everything they did for Dad the last 10 years.

She married Billy Moore on June 19, 1959. He survives of the home.
Myrna was a member of TOPS, Take Off Pounds Sensibly.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother; and sister.

She graduated from West Platte High School in 1974 then married Floyd Gannaway on March 10, 1973 and they shared 44 years together. She worked in the Tobacco fields in Weston when she was young, then worked at McCormick Distilling, she also worked at Alpha LaVal at the Kansas City Airport. Helen was a loving mother and grandmother and loved spending time with her grandkids. She was preceded in death by an infant son, her mother Dolly Bramble, two brothers, John Berryman Jr., and Larry Berryman, and a sister, Mildred “Dee” Wright. Survivors include, husband, Floyd Gannaway of the home, daughters, Janet (Jess) Kenny, St. Joseph, MO, and Deana (Bryan) Smith, Boise, ID, 5 grandchildren: Emmerie, Jordon, and Baylee Smith, and Trenton and Naiton Gannaway, brother, Harold Bramble of Weston, MO, sisters, Peggy Henderson, Booneville, MO, Frances (Kenny) Munsterman, Weston, MO, and Jeannie (Bobby) Munsterman, Weston, MO.

He was born April 24, 1933 to Dorr and Nellie (Bird) Griffin in Maysville, Missouri.
Gerald graduated from Stewartsville High School class of 1951.
Mr. Griffin proudly served in the U.S. Army in the 5th Armored Division and was stationed in Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri.
He married Marilyn Joyce Harmann on December 29, 1953. She preceded him in death after nearly 63 years of marriage on November 28, 2016.
He was the co-owner of Madget & Griffin Inc. demolition company for many years and was a member of Community of Christ Church.
Gerald enjoyed his American Saddlebred horses and helping his neighbors and friends. He loved his family.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Kirk, Jesse Lee, Earl, Carl and Jack Griffin.
Survivors include his son, Steven Griffin (Carol); daughter, Linda Carter (Charles); grandchildren, Bailey and Blair Griffin and Christian Carter; sister-in-laws, Sharon Hamann, Sharon Sue Hamann and Betty Griffin; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

She married Harold R. Stevens on March 28, 1953. He preceded her in death after 55 years of marriage on August 29, 2008.
She earned her nursing degree at University of Iowa.
Leona was a voracious reader and loved crossword puzzles.
Mrs. Stevens was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; sons, Thad and Damon Stevens; and sister, Thea Irwin.

Adelaide Catherine Murphy
1912-2017

murphy-adelaide-obit-photoAdelaide Catherine Murphy, 104, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, April 12, 2017. The daughter of Michael J. Fox and Margaret (Klein) Fox, Adelaide was born on July 15, 1912, on a farm northeast of Watertown, South Dakota. She married Joseph Patrick Murphy on June 17, 1939, and together they farmed near Henry, SD, for 35 years before moving to Watertown.
Mrs. Murphy graduated from Watertown’s Immaculate Conception School in 1930. A life-long learner, she furthered her education in both Sioux Falls and Aberdeen, South Dakota. Mrs. Murphy taught in rural schools for nearly 10 years, followed by another 15 years at her alma mater, Immaculate Conception School.
A devout Catholic, Adelaide was passionate about Catholic education, using her gifts of ingenuity, networking, and creative arts to raise money and awareness for local causes. Mrs. Murphy’s strong love of children continued outside of her teaching career. She was a 4-H leader, CCD teacher, and sponsor of the Junior Catholic Daughters.
Adelaide was an inspiring bright light with a genuine heart for service. In her earlier years, she was an active member of St. Henry’s Altar Society. Adelaide was instrumental in the early formation of the Hunters Dinner, which recently celebrated its 65th year. While living in Watertown, South Dakota, she also served as Regent of the Catholic Daughters of America and was an Oblate of St. Benedict. Her volunteer work extended to many organizations throughout the community, with a special focus on sewing, connecting, encouraging, and praying for others.
In 2006, Adelaide moved to St. Joseph, Missouri, to reside closer to family. She enjoyed the senior housing of Danford Hall and was a lively participant in their events. Adelaide was an active member of St. Francis Xavier Parish and continued her volunteer work, including tireless efforts to fundraise for student tuition at St. Francis Xavier School. She also led a Bible study group and took on public speaking opportunities when she was beyond 100 years of age.
Mrs. Murphy is survived by three sons, Jerry (Beverlee) of Bettendorf, Iowa; James (Jeanne) of St. Joseph, Missouri; Richard (Theresa) of Littleton, Colorado; a daughter, Mary Kay Natho (Brad) of Commerce City, Colorado; and a son-in-law, Larry Heim of Orange, California. Adelaide was the proud grandmother of 10 grandchildren, Kathy, Joe (Judith), Tracy, John (Teresa), Kristy (Jim), Scott (Caroline), Shayla, Stephanie, Amy (Mike), Joseph (Cristin), and eight great-grandchildren. She is survived by one sister, Louise Wagner of Miesville, Minnesota, and many nieces and nephews.
Adelaide was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe; daughter, Patricia; three infant sons, Joseph Jr., Shawn, and Eugene; four brothers, Fr. Leo Fox, Richard Fox, William Fox, Michael V. Fox; and a sister, Marie McAndrews.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in St. Joseph, Missouri, and Immaculate Conception School in Watertown, South Dakota.

David married Kay Cornett on January 11, 1971 in Miami, Oklahoma. She survives of the home.

He was an Iron Worker all his life traveling all over the United States. He served in the Navy, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, and arrowheads. Survivors include daughter, Kala Y. Rose, sons, Brad (Haylay) Thompson, Chad (Angela) Thompson, and Rod (Teresa) McCray all of St. Joseph, MO, and numerous grandchildren. Riley “Bud” Hollingsworth

He was born February 21, 1925 in St. Joseph, MO, son of the late Ada and R. B. Hollingsworth. He graduated from Benton High School, and he worked for the National Livestock Commission Company at the St. Joseph Stockyards. He then was the owner-operator of the Missourian Bar for 13 years with his wife Mildred. He also worked at Snorkel, and retired from the St. Joseph School District after 18 years of service. Bud and Mildred enjoyed time at their lake place at Lake Perry, also spending time with his family and grandchildren, woodworking and building projects, and he was an avid St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan. He was a member of King Hill Lodge #376 A.F. & A. M., and he was a Presbyterian. Bud was preceded in death by wife, Mildred Hollingsworth, his parents, sisters, Joann Caton and Betty Bailey. Survivors include, four daughters, Lisa (Tom) Sego, St. Joseph, Linda (Terry) Lambright, Savannah, MO, Laura Hibbs, and Leslie (J.R.) Ross, St. Joseph, MO, brother, Donald (Lavonne) Hollingsworth, Maryville, MO., 11 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren.

She was born July 16, 1927 in New Point, Missouri to William and Ollie Terry, they preceded her in death.
Jane was a member of Platte Valley Ladies Club and also volunteered one thousand hours at the Mosaic Cancer Center.
She enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens, yard, singing and giving generously of her time. Jane gave “produce” and flowers from her gardens to so many people and always gave from her heart.
Jane was also preceded in death by four sisters.
Survivors include her loving husband of 47 years, John; loving son and daughter-in-law, Lanny and Vashti Daise, St. Joseph; best friend and loving daughter, Suann Daise, Kansas City, MO; one and only special loving granddaughter, Seanna Wallis (Austin),Eagle, CO.

Nikole was preceded in death by her son, Jerrett Caudle, maternal grandfather, Walter Coffman, paternal grandparents, Edward and Helen Loubey. He enjoyed building hot rod cars, gardening, going to D&A Auto, where he was the “honorary supervisor”, he was a loving father & husband who enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Evangelistic Temple. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Albert, William Edward, Robert, and Donald Kunzler, and a sister, Goldie Turpin. She worked at cafe’s and nursing homes as a cook. Ruth was preceded in death by husband, LeRoy Schubert, her parents, sisters, Mildred and Marie Jackson, brother, Jesse Lee Jackson, grandson, Timothy Gibson, granddaughter, Kathy Huffman. Survivors include, 11 children: Leona Huffman, Leonard Gibson, Richard Hicks, John Robinson, Frank Lee, Diane Black, Mick (Lisa) Rhyne, Donald Rhyne, Roger (Dee) Rhyne, Ray (Mary) Rhyne, and David Schubert, brother in law, Raymond Schubert of St. Joseph, MO, 28 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren. She loved sewing, quilting, working puzzles, playing bingo & the lottery. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of the Patee Park Baptist Church. Beverly was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Lawrence Norris, daughter Christina Mansfield, sisters, Marilyn Mallory and Roberta Kent, and brother, Delbert Miller. He was born December 6, 1951 in Sioux City, Iowa son of Jeanette & Donald Stowers. He married Gayle on May 17, 1997, and she survives of the home. He graduated from East High School, and attended one year of college. Randy worked as a manager with National Beef Leathers in St. Joseph, MO. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and all sports, and he was an avid daily weight lifter. He was a member of the Evolution United Methodist Church. Randy was preceded in death by his father, Donald Stowers. Survivors include wife, Gayle Stowers of the home, mother, Jeanette Stowers, Sioux City, IA, daughter, Abby Jo (Jeffrey) Brown, Fort Worth, TX, sons, Ryan Beach, Caledonia, IL, and Devin Beach, Baltimore, MD, granddaughters, Harper, Kendall, Kenzie, and Larkyn, brother, Ron (Mary Jean) Stowers, sister, Lori (Greg) Tichenor, and his black lab, Tess, and cat, Amber. Robert B. “Bob” Davis
1930-2017

Robert B. “Bob” Davis, 86, of rural Hiawatha, died Friday evening, April 7, 2017, at the Sabetha Manor.
Born October 15, 1930, at St. Joseph, MO, one of two children born to Albert and Ferne Syster Davis. Bob wrote: “After much deliberation, my parents brought me back to the farm home 2 ¼ miles east of Hiawatha where except for brief periods of time, I lived my entire life. I suppose it could be said I didn’t get far in this world.” Bob attended the LaGrange country school for 6 years prior to graduation from Hiawatha High School.
Robert belonged to the Mt. Zion Rustlers 4 H Club of Hiawatha. While in 4 H, he constructed the first terrace on his parents’ farm and won the state soil conservation award. He also accompanied the Brown County Soil Conservation Board as a winner of the Goodyear Soil Conservation award for outstanding work in Brown County. The winners received a weeklong trip to Goodyear’s Litchfield Park in Phoenix, AZ.
Robert enlisted in the 2 BN, 130 FA, Kansas Army National Guard of Hiawatha, as a private, later received a commission and completed training as an army aviator in 1956, where he served for 12 years before being discharged. He started flying when he was 20 and enjoyed this sport for over 53 years and received his commercial license in 1956.
Mr. Davis was a longtime member of Bethany United Church of Christ of Hiawatha where he served on the board, and as consistory president; BPOE #1741, Hiawatha Elks Lodge; the Hiawatha Lions Club; and had served on the Wolf River Watershed Board through the years. Bob loved to help and do for others, especially those in need.
On July 3, 1955, he married Evelyn Crane from Powhattan. To this union two children were born: Greg and Kim. The family farmed and operated a dairy on the same farm east of Hiawatha until he and Evelyn retired. Evelyn survives of the home.
Other survivors include his children Gregory Davis (Diane), and Kimberly Neibling (Gary), all of Hiawatha; a sister Bette Lukert (John) of Sabetha; 6 grandchildren: Ryan Davis, Jillian Hefner (Josh), Cody Neibling, Zach Perry, Allison Jackson (LaShawn), Rachel Henninger (Daniel); and 4 great-grandchildren: Ty Jackson, Makayla Neibling, Neaka Henninger, and Draven Henninger.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a grandson Deivid Davis.
A Celebration of Bob’s life is planned for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 13, at Bethany United Church of Christ of Hiawatha, with Pastor Shane Spangler officiating. Private inurnment will be at a later date at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha. Military honors a courtesy of Brown County Veterans Honor Guard.
The family will meet friends from 6 until 7:30 Wednesday evening, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha.

He was born January 27, 1950 in St. Joseph, MO, son of the late Virginia and Lovell “Chili” Chilcoat. He married Barb Mueller on July 22, 1974, and they have shared 42 years together. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War. He worked at Johnson Controls for 38 years. James enjoyed Sci Fi, and was a fan of the Supernatural, Aliens & Big Foot. He also was an avid gamer on X-Box, especially Golf, and enjoyed collecting cast iron miniature statuettes, bowling, pinball, and fishing. He loved his family, and spending time with his grandchildren . He was a practical joker on his family & friends, and had an ornery streak. James was preceded in death by parents, and a brother, Harold Chilcoat. Bud was born on June 2, 1930 in West Point, Nebraska to Alfred Chris & Crystal (Beck) Schoenfeldt Sr.
He was a carpenter & a cabinet maker. Bud drove the school bus for Wathena Schools for 22 years, in which he was very proud of.
Bud married Charlene (Heinen) Winchester on May 21, 1981. She survives of the home.

Julia M. “Bitsy” Griffith, 89, Atchison, Kansas died Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at her home.
Funeral services will be Monday, April 10, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with Abbot Barnabas Senecal, OSB officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Monday from 10:00 A.M. until time of services at the funeral home. Bitsy was born June 5, 1927 in Atchison, Kansas the daughter of James and Myrtle Martin Griffith. She attended St. Joseph and St. Benedict Elementary Schools, graduating from Mt. Saint Scholastica Academy. She then attended Highland Community Junior College.
Bitsy was employed with Electra Company in Atchison and then became employed with Holly’s Nursing Home as a social service representative. Following the closing of Holly’s Nursing Home she joined Grace Hollingsworth in the opening of Medicalodge Nursing Home in their social service department and continued with Medicalodge until her retirement in 1982.
She was a member of St. Benedict Parish of Atchison. In her free time of retirement, Bitsy became an avid reader to occupy her time. She formed a relationship with many Benedictine College students who frequently visited in her home.
She is survived by nieces and nephews including Rosemary Gary, Atchison, KS; Kellie King-Baltezor, Lawrence, KS; Barbara Yumang, Wichita, KS; Jim Gary, Leavenworth, KS; and Joe Gary, Leavenworth, KS; and many cousins and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Betty Jane Gary, Jimmie Mae Morphis, Mary JoAnn McCray, two brothers, Bud Griffith and Jack Griffith.

Gary L. Holthaus
1945-2017

unnamedONAGA – Gary L. Holthaus, 72, of Onaga, died Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at the Onaga Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born January 11, 1945 at Seneca, the son of Adolph and Esther Stuke Holthaus. He graduated from Baileyville High School in 1963.
After high school Gary worked at The Creamery in Sabetha until he married. He then worked at Goodyear in Topeka for about ten years, farmed south of Havensville, and since 1982 has owned and operated Northeast Transit trucking company.
He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Onaga and had served as the Parish Council President for several years. He served on the Onaga City Council from 1997 to 1999, and was the city Mayor from 1999 to 2013.
Gary married Beryl Ann Haverkamp on October 2, 1965 at Baileyville. She died August 22, 2013.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Kevin Holthaus, who died in 1981.
Survivors include two daughters, Julie Falk (Rodney), Maple Hill and Dana Brock (Rocky), Kearney, MO; two sons, Brad Holthaus (Lori), Topeka and Matt Holthaus (Heather), Maple Hill; four brothers, Bob Holthaus, Seneca, Jim Holthaus, Topeka, Keith Holthaus, Holton, and Steve Holthaus, Seneca; a sister, Bev Holthaus, Wamego, fifteen grandchildren and two great grandsons.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 8th at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Inurnment will be later in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery at Seneca. Gary will lie in state until 4:00 p.m. Friday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga. James (Jim) M. Trout, D.D.S.

He was born in Beatrice, Nebraska on May 31, 1934 to Harry and Maida (Shallcross) Trout. He grew up primarily in St. Joseph and graduated from Central High School before attending University of Kansas. Dr. Trout graduated from UMKC Dental School in 1959.
Jim married Judy Nelson of Kansas City on November 30, 1957. After dental school graduation, he served at Sheppard Air Force in Wichita Falls, TX for two years prior to moving to St. Joseph and opening a dental practice in town where he worked until retirement in 2004.
Jim was first a family man. He taught his children and many in the Boy Scout programs to be productive and helpful to their families and communities. He set the example for them by participating in their activities whether it was sports, scouting or studying. He set standards by the example he taught and lived.
Jim served the Pony Express Council of the Boy Scouts of America by serving as a Cub Scout leader and a troop leader as well as a member of the Council Board of Pony Express Council. He also received the Silver Beaver Award and was Chieftan of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. For many years, a contingent of local Scouts went to England and several contingents of British Scouts visits the United States and Camp Geiger. Jim worked with the local and British Scouts for a number of trips and led several contingencies to England. After a number of trips back and forth ‘Across the Pond’ with Boy Scout groups, Jim was the first and only American to be awarded the Derbyshire Star by the Derbyshire (England) County Scout Council in recognition of an outstanding contribution to scouting in England.
The local dental community had been in need of dental hygentists in the area for a number of years. After retirement, Jim approached Hillyard Technical School about creating a fine quality school which has been in operation for 10 years and graduates 10 students annually.
Jim served First Presbyterian Church as an Elder and on numerous committees. His big contribution was the raising of funds for a new church organ and the changes to the chancel area which took nearly 20 years.
A man who took great joy in life, Jim loved music, especially classical. He enjoyed tennis whether playing it or watching it. Following KU basketball was also a favorite past time especially when they were on a winning streak.
While working as a respected dentist in the local area, Jim was active in local and state dental societies and was inducted into the International College of Dentistry in 1985 due to his quality work as a dentist and his contribution to the dental communities. He was chosen as Dentist of the Year by the Missouri Dental Association.
Preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Maida Trout of St. Joseph; and sister, Marjorie Williams of Atlanta, GA.
He leaves behind his wife of nearly 59 years, Judy, of St. Joseph; a son, Dr. Andy Trout of St. Joseph; daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and John McNulty of McMinnville, TN. Jim also leaves four grandchildren, John and Joe Trout of St. Joseph, Erin McNulty of Lombard, IL and Emily McNulty of Kansas City, MO.

Garlan was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, George, Curtis and Gilbert Pinson. unnamedTroy Allen Franks, 63, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Wednesday April 5, 2017 at Mosaic Life Center. Troy was born on January 11, 1954 in Wichita, Kansas to James and Melverine Franks. He attended Savannah High School where he graduated in 1972. He married his wife, Denise Franks (Martin) of 36 years, on July 4, 1981. Troy began working construction right out of high school. He first worked for Dewey construction company, before getting on with Walters Construction where he continued to work for nearly 30 years, leaving the company as superintendent. He helped build many of the buildings around the St. Joseph metro area. Troy loved many things. He loved hunting and fishing and enjoying the peace that nature evoked. He was very contemplative on matters, and anyone you meet that knew Troy probably has a coin he gave them for a birthday or Christmas in their pocket or in a drawer somewhere. He was extremely kind and thoughtful. He loved garage sales (to his wife’s dismay) and his family. He loved God and searched for peace in the scripture. He was a member of Grace Evangelical Church for the past 28 years, and enjoyed participating in the Easter Passion program, where he played the part of a Roman Soldier. Troy was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include: wife Denise; his daughter Annie Kidd and her husband Ted of St. Louis, Missouri; son Jeremiah Franks and his wife Cate of Dallas, Texas; daughter Sierra Franks and her wife Erinn of Wenatchee, Washington; son Dakota Franks of St. Joseph; his mother, Melverine Franks of St. Joseph; two brothers James and John Franks of St. Joseph; and also, a sister Tammy Franks of St. Joseph. He was a proud grandpa/papa to seven grandchildren, McKenzie, McKayla, Issac, Alliyah, Isabella, Kara and Dempsey and one great grandchild, Nyla. Phyllis was born on October 27, 1937 in Stratford, Iowa to Garrett O. & Nettie V. (Carlstedt) Johnson.
She was a member of the Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary & the VFW Auxiliary all of Wathena.
Phyllis worked as a sales clerk for the Millers & Nelson’s Pharmacy & the Wathena Times.
Phyllis married Verne W. Peterson on May 20, 1956 at the Calvary United Methodist Church in Stratford, Iowa. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Shirley Vinchettle & Marcell Bergman & 3 brothers, Orland, Orvil & Marvin Johnson.

He was born January 21, 1948 in Atchison, Kansas to George and Wilda (Carson) Behler, they preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death is his brother, George Kent Behler.
Paul was a truck driver for CFI for many years, then retired as a dispatcher from Mid Cities January 2013.
He enjoyed hunting, traveling, working in his garage and spending time with his granddaughters. Paul was a proud and loving father, grandfather, brother and friend.

She was born June 28, 1926, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, Kansas. Her parents were Orrin and Opal (Day) Grover. She attended Pleasant Valley Grade School and graduated from Onaga High School in 1944.
Patricia married her childhood sweetheart, Courtland Warren Dodds on October 25, 1944. They were married in her parents’ home in Onaga. She spent most of her adult life in Seneca, Kansas; winters in Texas, and later retired to Climax Springs, MO, before returning to Onaga.
She was employed by Santa Fe Railroad of Topeka, Todd Tractor Company of Seneca, and served as the Deputy County Treasurer for Nemaha County. Patricia was also a homemaker for many years.
Patricia enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family.
She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Onaga. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star.
She is survived by her husband Courtland. Other survivors include two daughters, Diane (John) Harkness, Maple Hill, KS; Connie (Richard) Flammang, Climax Springs, MO; three grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and one great-great grandson. Patricia was especially attached to her granddaughter, Tracey Talley.
Her parents preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 6th at the First Congregational, UCC in Onaga. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time. Burial will follow in the Onaga Cemetery. Patricia will lie in state Wednesday and until noon Thursday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga.

ST. JOSEPH, MO – Virginia (Forbes) Sheridan, 90, of St. Joseph, Missouri died Sunday, April 2, 2017 in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Virginia was born on January 30, 1927 in Wathena, Kansas to Russell and Edith (Wilson) Forbes. She lived in Elwood until moving to St. Joseph in 1993. Virginia worked and retired from J C Penny in St. Joseph.
Virginia is a member of the First Baptist Church in Wathena and the American Baptist Women of the church.
She married Gerald “Jerry” Sheridan on June 8, 1946 in Elwood, Kansas. He preceded her in death on January 29, 2003. Virginia was also preceded by her parents.

Troy, Kansas – Katherine “Armilda” Dawe, 94, of Troy, Kansas passed away Monday, April 3, 2017 at her home.
Armilda was born on May 2, 1922 to Robert & Emma (Shalz) Miller.
She was a member of the St. Charles Catholic Church & the St. Ann’s Altar Society of Troy. Armilda worked for Sees Candy Store in California, Rexall Drug Store, Knapp’s Grocery Store & retired from DCEC as a Para.
Armilda married William “Bud” Henry Dawe Jr. on August 31, 1942 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on June 22, 2003. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Brothers, Francis, Edward & Paul Miller, sister, Leona Morrison & 2 infant sisters, Helen & Mary.

4181156_wlppHAVENSVILLE – James LeRoy Armstrong, 74, of Havensville, died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, March 31, 2017 at his home.
He was born October 8, 1942 on the Henry Ranch north of Havensville, the son of James Martin and Veda Mae Channel Armstrong. He grew up in the Havensville area with his 5 siblings and wonderful childhood friends. He graduated from Havensville High School in 1960.
Jim married the love of his life, Paulette V. Jones on December 20, 1961 at his parents’ home in Havensville. They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary Dec. 20th 2016. She survives, of the home.
Jim worked as a tire builder for Goodyear Tire and Rubber in Topeka for thirty-six years. During this time he met and worked with many great people that he remained friends with throughout his life. He was a proud member of United Steel Workers of America Local No. 307. During this time he also farmed and had a baling business titled “Jim Armstrong and Sons: Big Job or Small, We Bale ‘Em All”. He spent most of his time outside enjoying his land and the outdoors.
Jim was a member of Onaga Masonic Lodge No. 188 A.F.& A.M. for 51 years. In 2015 he was awarded the Mason’s Citizen of the Year Plaque, and earned his 50 year pin in 2016.
Jim volunteered too many hours to count at the Onaga Senior Center and the Havensville Community.
He was a member of Bucks Grove United Methodist Church where he enjoyed bible study each Sunday. He was a regular columnist in the Onaga Herald where he wrote under his pen name Red E. Ornot. His column titled “The Upper Crick” was popular and will be missed by many. Under the name of Red E Ornot, Jim also appeared in numerous Cow Creek Opry performances.
Jim was preceded in death by his son, James Bryan “J.B.” Armstrong, his parents Dutch and Veda Mae, his brother, Max Armstrong, and sister, Patty Clements.
Other survivors include son, Jeff Armstrong, Salina; daughter, Julia Gomez and husband Mike, Maple Hill; one brother, Philip Armstrong, in Louisiana; two sisters, Treva Mumaw, Belvue and Janice Crest, Wamego, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim also leaves behind his loving five grandchildren, Amber Mae Gomez, Kory James Gomez, Parker James Armstrong, Jacob Jones Armstrong and Kason Michael Gomez. They will miss him dearly and forever remember the wonderful grandpa they had.
Funeral services with Masonic Rites will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 5th at the HRHS Community Center in Havensville. Burial will follow in the Havensville Cemetery. Jim will lie in state Tuesday and until noon Wednesday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga where family and friends will meet from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Melvin was born on June 16, 1930 in Iowa Falls, Iowa the son of Elvin L. and Marie (Hamre) Benshoof.
He and the former Shirley Ownby were united in marriage on May 30, 1987 at the United Methodist Church in Atchison, Kansas.
He worked in the janitorial department of Midwest Grain Products in Atchison, Kansas until his retirement.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Atchison. Melvin was a collector of eagles and loved anything about old cars and car shows. He also enjoyed spending time fishing.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Shirley Benshoof, Atchison, KS, a daughter, Lilly Benshoof and her fiancé Jonathan Lincoln, Atchison, KS, and two sisters, Beverly Joyce and Betty Lou.
He was preceded in death by six brothers, Mervin, Lewis, Keith, Verdell, Lavern and Dale Benshoof, and three sisters, Arlene Evelyn, Shirley Pike and Mary Delores.

Christy Adams-Clark

She married Ridge Clark on January 7, 2013.
Mrs. Adams-Clark worked as a Marketing Director at the Spec Shop for three years, taught fitness for 10 years at the Shape Shop and the Joyce Ray Patterson Senior Center and was a hospice volunteer at Mosaic Life Care Hospice.
Christy loved her family and especially enjoyed being a mom. She was also a strong advocate with the Autism Alliance and enjoyed painting.
She was preceded in death by her father who raised her, Doug Pickett ; and her father who passed away when Christy was young, Steven Gerald Adams.

Herbert Eugene Olson

unnamedHerbert Eugene Olson, 87, of Hiawatha, died Friday morning, March 31, 2017, at Hiawatha Community Hospital.
He was born August 25, 1929, in St. Joseph, Missouri, one of two sons born to Charles and Vivian Jacques Olson and had lived in northeast Kansas his entire life. He grew up in the Highland-Robinson areas and graduated from Robinson High School with the class of 1949. In high school, he played basketball. He served two years in the U.S. Army before he was discharged in 1957. Herb returned to this area and worked for the Robinson Co op for many years until he retired.
Herbert was a member of the First Baptist Church Family Life Center in Hiawatha. He enjoyed camping and spending time with family and friends. He never met a stranger, loved to talk to anyone who would listen. Later in life, he enjoyed bird watching.
He married the former Betty Adams, July 10, 1955. She survives of the home.
Also surviving are five sons: Douglas (Lisa) Olson of Hiawatha, Steve (Robin) Olson of Burlington Junction, MO, Charles (Teresa) Olson of Hiawatha, Jeffery (Margaret) Olson of Hiawatha, Rick (Mary) Olson of Hiawatha; two daughters: Teresa (Gary) Campbell of Clarksdale, MO, Pamela (Steven) Gunnells of Nolensville, TN; 16 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is also survived by an aunt Ruth Montague.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother James.
A Celebration of Herbert’s life is planned for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center, with Pastor James Callaway officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery, Robinson.

Josephine Aline (Landers) Penland 95, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away peacefully, Friday, March 31, 2017. Josephine was born December 19, 1921, the youngest child of Jasper M. and Lillie May (Law) Landers.
She grew up and lived her entire life in the Southside of St. Joseph, just two doors up from where she was born.
Josephine, daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, spent her life as a homemaker, caring for her family and loved visits from them and seeing the little ones.
She had an expressive reading voice especially to children, reciting poems of her childhood from memory. She loved to sing the old gospel songs, watching birds, gardening & canning, and her flowers. She was a lifetime member of the R.L.D.S. Church, attending the St. Joseph Restoration Branch, when her health permitted.
Josephine married Marion H. Penland on December 27, 1945 after his return from the military. He passed in 1969. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Myrtle Kinnamon and Ethel Penland, brother, Mose Landers, five infant siblings, and one infant great grandchild.
She is survived by 6 children, Jasper (Pat) Penland and Elnora Penland, both of Savannah, Lillie (Sam) Church, Gower, MO, Timothy (Angie) Penland, Osborn, MO, Willis (Pam) Penland and Mark Penland, of the home, fourteen grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren with a new baby girl expected in May, and a great-great grandchild.
While we were saying goodbye___, other loved ones in Heaven were saying welcome home. “The chain has come full circle”, Once Again.

He was a brick layer for the Cement Masons & Plasterers Local Union # 518 for many years. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was a fine artist and a friend to everyone. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Lee Farrell. He is survived by wife, Marsha L. He was born January 21, 1924 to Harry and Neva (Robertson) Bowlin, they preceded him in death.
Loyd married Clema Anderson July 31, 1943, she preceded him in death July 7, 1983. He later married Betty Burks January 21, 1984.
He was a WWII Veteran and had worked for many years as a maintenance worker for MODOT.
Loyd enjoyed farming, woodwork, tractors, cars, hunting and traveling. He was a great cook and started cooking at the age of five.
He was also preceded in death by brothers, Glenn, Harold, Harry T. Jr. and Leonard Bowlin; sisters, Dorothy Dick and Maxine Kibbey.
Additional survivors include son, Marvin Bowlin; stepchildren, Jim and Pam Burks; brother, Loren Clifford Bowlin; granddaughter, Marlene Bowlin (Scott); numerous nieces and nephews.

Robert Charles “Bob” Hanks

Robert Charles “Bob” Hanks, 86, of Hiawatha, died Wednesday morning, March 29, 2017, at Maple Heights and Rehabilitation Center.
Bob was born in Ringgold County, Iowa, December 4, 1930, the oldest of 8 children born to Otis and Dorothy Lucille Combs Hanks. He grew up at Redding, Iowa and attended school there. He spent most of his working life at Grant City, Missouri, where he worked many years as a heavy equipment operator for Worth county. He later worked at the sale barn at Grant City for many years before retiring. Bob loved animals, enjoyed watching the Royals and Chiefs, and working word puzzle books. He LOVED watching westerns, especially John Wayne! He enjoyed country music, especially Johnny Cash.
He married Katharine Fulcher in St. Joseph, Missouri, December 31, 1993. In their younger years, they enjoyed dancing. They lived at White Cloud a few years before moving to Hiawatha to make their home. She died in 2014. Bob was also preceded in death his parents; two grandson Blaine Alfrey, Davane Chilson; sisters: Maude Hanks, Ilene Hanks; five brothers: Jr, James, Lawrence, Deryl and Kennith, both in infancy.
Survivors include son Dorsey Simpson, Jr., of Hiawatha; two daughters: Cindy Rogers (Dion) of Seneca, Donna Watson (Kirk) of Fairview; 7 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren.
Cremation is planned with a Celebration of Life service to be held the weekend of April 8th, in Fairview.

She was a teacher for 20 years at North Platte High School, Dearborn, MO. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing, knitting, traveling, spoiling her grandkids, and spending time with friends playing cards. She was formerly active with 4-H and FHA. Carolyn was a member of the Faucett Christian Church, Christians Womens Association, she helped with Bible School, and was the Church Treasurer. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include, husband, William “Bill” R. Waller of Faucett, MO, daughter, Jennifer L. (Danial) Lassiter of Lubbock, TX, son, Kevin R. (Cynthia) Waller of Bunceton, MO, daughter, Gwenlyn K. unnamedMary A. Snoddy, 91, Atchison, Kansas, died Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at her residence.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at 11:00 A.M. at Campbell Chapel A.M.E. Church in Atchison, Kansas. Interment will follow Leavenworth National Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday, April 4th from 10:00 A.M. until service time at the church. Final arrangements have been entrusted to the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home.
Mary Anna was born February 24, 1926 in Atchison, Kansas the daughter of James Givens and Florence Bratton. She attended Lincoln School and eventually received a GED at the ISD of Kansas and continuing on to receive her certification as a Certified Patient Care Assistant (CPCA). She was employed as a food service worker, worked in a laundry department, and as a domestic worker for various families within the Atchison, KS area. She had a compassion for the elderly and the disabled. She was a CPCA worker for the state of Kansas until she retired.
She was married to Arthur Lee Curry, divorced and later married Christopher Lee Snoddy. Chris precedes Mary Anna in death along with her mother, Florence Gillum and stepfather Warner Gillum, a daughter Joyce Ilene Snoddy and a son, Arthur Lee Curry Jr.
Mary Anna’s surviving children: 2 sons John (wife Amy) Snoddy (Minneapolis, MN), Boyd (wife Shawn) Snoddy (Atchison, KS) and 6 daughters Anna (husband Otha) Kelley (Atchison, KS), Brenda Walker (Houston, TX), Mary (husband Larry) Russell (Humble, TX), Toni (husband Willie) Green (Minneapolis, MN), Pamela (husband Earl) Gilchrist (Mpls, MN), Sheila Snoddy (Houston, TX)
Mary Anna’s surviving brothers, Lawrence (wife Joan) Gillum (Egan, MN) and Howard Gillum (St. Paul, MN). Also survived by 2 aunts and an uncle and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Norma Lee “DeeDee” Bumphrey
1925-2017

She was born February 16, 1925 to Ralph and Esther (Ackerman) Miller in St. Joseph, Missouri.
She married Gerald Bumphrey in January of 1960. After 49 years of marriage he preceded her in death on June 26, 2009.
Dee Dee was a bookkeeper for Robert Speers Accounting Office for many years.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Marilyn Francis Bumphrey.
Survivors include her brother, Ralph Miller; niece Tischa Curtin (Robert); and great niece and nephew.

Larry D. Johnson

4178319_wlppLarry D. Johnson, 77, Rosendale, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2017.
He was born June 16,1939, to Charles Johnson and Gladys (Cargill-Johnson) Rienstra ,and stepfather John Rienstra, they preceded him in death. Larry married Ruth Foster April14,1958, she preceded him in death January 21, 1995. He was employed by Dannon Mills and Dugdales Packing in St. Joseph, Missouri. He spent most of his life building residential and commercial properties in and around St. Joseph as Johnson Brothers Construction. Larry enjoyed hard work and taking care of his family. The only thing he loved more than hard work was spending time with family and friends doing some of his other favorite past times like hunting, snagging spoonbill and other fishing along with hunting for morel mushrooms. He enjoyed traveling with Fern to visit his brother Jerry in Tennessee. His most recent hobby was on an old Ford 9n tractor which he was restoring with his buddies Gordon and Harley. His favorite meal of the day was breakfast and he enjoyed a good cup of coffee especially from his local hangouts, Betty’s and The Spot Cafe. Larry had a big heart and an energetic laugh. He possessed the gift of gab and knew no strangers. He was the type of guy who would give you the shirt right off his back. He will be greatly missed by the many who knew and loved him. Larry was preceded in death by death by his parents and brothers Chuck, Ronnie and Ralph along with one sister, Betty Peays. Survivors include: three sons; Stanley Johnson and wife Marilyn of Faucett, MO; David Johnson and wife Paula of Faucett, MO; Larry R. Johnson of Kansas City,MO. Four daughters; Brenda Wilkinson and husband Rob of Atlanta, GA; Bridgette Johnson of Atlanta, GA; Carrie Ruark and husband Gregory of Alexandria, VA, and Bobbie Jo Arnold of Stewartsville, MO, 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, one brother, Jerry Johnson and wife Barbara of Millington, Tennesse and one sister, Charlotte “Rosie” Wells of St. Joseph, Missouri. He also survived by his companion Fern Hamm of the home, and her children Sherri (David) Sears, Steve Hamm, Karla (Nick Koontz), Tracy (Jeff) Hofmeister, and Ronnie (Pat) Hamm. Mr. Johnson’s has been cremated under the care of the Rupp Funeral Home, a private family service will be held at a later date to honor Larry’s life.

Ella Barrett
1919-2017

unnamedElla Barrett, long time resident of Hiawatha, passed away peacefully Thursday morning, March 30, 2017 at Maple Heights.
Ella was born on December 1, 1919, to John and Anna (Dombrowe) Oltjen of Robinson, Kansas. She grew up on a farm outside of Robinson near the Upper Wolf Lutheran Church, where she was active in choir and women’s ministries and a member her entire life.
She married her husband of 60 years, Thomas Barrett, while he was in the Navy. They were married in San Diego and later lived in Livermore, California, until he was discharged. They returned to Hiawatha where she worked for the Brown County Soil Conservation Service until she retired.
Ella is survived by her two children, six grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Her daughter, Margaret Bleeker, currently lives in Santa Barbara, California, and her son and his wife, John and Debi Barrett, currently live in Houston, Texas.
She was preceded in death her husband, Thomas Barrett, her parents, John and Anna Oltjen, her brother, Alfred Oltjen and his wife Mary, and their son Paul Oltjen.
A Celebration of Ella’s life is planned for 2 p.m. Monday, April 3, at Upper Wolf Lutheran Church, 1803 Sumac Road, Robinson, with Pastor Steve Evans officiating. Interment will follow at the Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to services Monday at the Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Upper Wolf Lutheran Church, sent in care of Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, 124 S 7th St., Hiawatha 66434.

Chief Michael E. McDermed
1947-2017

unnamedMichael E. McDermed, 69 years old, Retired Fire Chief of the Atchison, Kansas Fire Department, passed away Thursday, March 30, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Celebration of Life Services will be Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at the Atchison Event Center, 710 S. 9th Street, Atchison, KS. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday, April 4, 2017 from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. The family encourages dressing in bright colors or Hawaiian attire. Memorial contributions are suggested to the National Brain Tumor Society (NBTSevents.braintumor.org/2017chiefscombatforacure) or the Michael McDermed Memorial Fund c/o City of Atchison.
Michael was born on April 26, 1947 in Topeka, Kansas the son of John and Minnie (Lipps) McDermed. He attended Franklin Elementary School in Atchison and graduated from Atchison High School in 1966. He was awarded numerous scholarships in the Arts and due to his athletic abilities in gymnastics received many athletic scholarships. He attended Kansas State University, participating in gymnastics, where he was an all-around champion.
He and the former Diane Kimmi were united in marriage on October 9, 1971 at St. Benedict’s Church in Atchison, Kansas with Fr. Roderic Giller, OSB as celebrant.
Prior to his employment with the Atchison Fire Department, Mike modeled for the Atchison Leather Products Company and served as an usher at the former Fox Theatre.
Mike began with the Atchison Fire Department on February 14, 1971 and was promoted to Fire Chief on June 1, 1981, where he served as Fire Chief for an unprecedented 35 years. He remained with the department until his retirement on June 17, 2016. Throughout his career he had several periods where he served as an interim City Manager.
He was a member of the National Association of Fire Chiefs, Kansas State Association of Fire Chiefs, and was an active participant in the Kansas League of Municipalities. He was an avid softball player in the Atchison community for many years. He enjoyed weekly trips to movie theatres to watch numerous different movies. Mike and Diane enjoyed their many years of traveling to Florida to spend time with their son and his family. He was also an avid sports fan of the New York Yankees and Dallas Cowboys. He was dearly loved by his many family friends and his co-workers.
Mike is survived by his wife of 45 years, Diane McDermed, of the couple’s home in Atchison, KS, a son, Brandon and his wife Dr. Jenna McDermed, Orlando, FL, two grandchildren, Elliet McDermed and Ronan McDermed, and a sister, Bev Crum, Parkville, MO.

Betty Jo (Knoch) Gore
1938-2017

Betty Jo (Knoch) Gore, beloved mother and friend, passed away March 30, 2017. Born and raised in the Lake of the Ozarks area, Betty Jo resided in there until moving to Wathena, KS, in 2003 to be near family. Betty graduated from School of the Osage in Lake Ozark, MO, and attended college in Springfield, MO, at Southwest Missouri State University. In the summers she was active in the Water Ski Show on Lake of the Ozarks. In 2004 Betty was recognized for 25 years of service to the School of the Osage Alumni. She received the “Distinguished Alumni Award” and spoke at the graduation service that year. Betty had written and edited the alumni newsletter for 25 years. With her brother, Richard, they established a listing of alumni that had been in military services that is on the school website. In 1991 she was recognized with the Directors Trophy for volunteer service to the Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. She had served 20 years as Ribbon Cutting Chairman for the new lake area businesses and co-chaired many fund raisers for the group. Betty volunteered over 3,000 hour at the Lake Regional Hospital in Osage Beach, MO. Betty was named “Woman of the Year” in 1998 for her service to the community, hospital, school system, and Lake Ozark Christian Church where she served as a Deacon and on many committees over the years. After moving to Kansas she attended Wesley Methodist Church in Saint Joseph, MO, and New Life Church in Blair, KS. Betty Jo was preceded in death by her parents (Lois and Glen Knoch), a stepson (Rick Butts) she had raised, and her older brother (Gerald). Survivors include Rodney Butts and wife Scarlet; Randall Butts and wife Reggie; grandson Regan Butts; granddaughter Rayme Jo Butts; stepson Randy Butts and wife Donna; her four brothers Richard, Howard, Mike, and Donald; and, numerous cousins and friends. Betty Jo will be cremated. A celebration of Betty Jo’s life will be held Thursday at New Life Church from 6:00-8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers a memorial gift is requested to the Wathena EMS Department.

Merlyn Ann “Fritzie” Blandin
1939-2017

unnamedMerlyn Ann “Fritzie” Blandin, 77, of Hiawatha, died Thursday afternoon, March 30, 2017, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha.
She was born at Mt. Hope, Kansas, July 5, 1939, one of nine children born to Elmer and May Johnson Romig. She grew up at Mt. Hope, attended school there where she later graduated high school. Fritzie lived at Burrton, Hutchison, and moved to Hiawatha to be near her daughter Tammy about 18 years ago. She worked for Flair Fold in Hiawatha for about 10 years. She began working as a Green Thumb worker, first in the office at NEK CAP in the Brown County Courthouse, later for Big Brothers Big Sisters a few years before she retired.
Fritzie loved her family first, loved to watch KU Basketball and was a whiz at growing African violets. She enjoyed raising pansies and iris. To say Merlyn loved to sew was an understatement—she started sewing at a young age. She also enjoyed craft painting and reading.
She married Glenn Dale Blandin, December 6, 1955, at Seagraves, Texas.
Survivors include her children: Glen Dale Blandin of Round Rock, Texas, Jeff Blandin (Mabel) of Hutchinson, Kansas, Tammy Adams (James) of Hiawatha, Terry McMillan (Brian) of Hillsboro, Kansas, Jennifer Jaquet (Brian), also of Hutchinson; 19 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother Virgil Romig of Lansing, Michigan; with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings: Lawrence, John, Edna Hackett, Edith “Maxine” Athens, Betty Bitter, Nellie Reichenberger, and Ella Rose Walker.
Cremation is planned with a memorial service to be held at a later date.

Katherine Lee Green
1918-2017

She was born March 31, 1918 in Clearmont, Missouri to Everett and Mamie (Cox) Gray, they preceded her in death.
Katherine married Harry Franklin Green, also of Clearmont, in 1943. He preceded her in death October of 1979.
She graduated from Northwest Missouri State in Maryville and later received her Masters Degree at Colorado State College in Greeley, Colorado. She was a guidance counselor at Central High School, Bode Middle School and also taught English, Speech and Drama at Farragut and Leon in Iowa. She was also an active member of PEO and The Bode Book Club. After the Columbine High School tragedy in 1999, Katherine came out of retirement and traveled to Columbine, Colorado to assist with the counseling of the children.
Katherine enjoyed traveling, music and theatre and loved children, helping them in any way she could. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Freudenthal Home Health Care and Crossroads Hospice for their loving care.
She was also preceded in death by her sister, Virginia Heyen.
Survivors include son, Bob Green, Kansas City, Missouri; nephew, Joe Heyen, Kansas City, Missouri and niece, Ann Heyen, Portland, Oregon.
The family will gather with friends 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Farewell Services 10:00 A.M. Saturday, Ashland United Methodist Church. Interment Nodaway Memorial Gardens, Maryville, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Noyes Home in honor of Katherine.
