Bonnie June Ford

unnamedBonnie June Ford, 81, passed away peacefully at her home in St Joseph, MO surrounded by her three loving children. Bonnie June (Baker) Ford was born on April 2,1935 in Omaha, NE. She was the daughter of the late Allen and Jesse Baker. Bonnie was a graduate of Benton High School class of 1953. Following graduation, Bonnie worked at Stockyards Bank and Lake Viking Property Sales before settling into a lifelong career of working in healthcare. For many years,Bonnie worked at Methodist Medical Center/Heartland Health in St Joseph as a CNA and an ICU unit secretary. In the late 1970s and early 1980s. Bonnie was very active and worked tirelessly to help organize a local1199: National Union of Hospital and Healthcare Workers District at Methodist Medical Center in St. Joseph, MO. Bonnie was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Claude Franklin Ford, on August 28,1953 in St Joseph,MO. Bonnie and Claude enjoyed 49 wonderful years of marriage before Claude passed away in 2002. When asked about her greatest accomplishments in life, Bonnie would always mention her children. Bonnie was amazed by her children and loved them with all of her heart and soul. Bonnie loved the Lord and was baptized at the age of 12 at Carnegie Baptist Church in St Joseph,MO. Bonnie was a longtime member of both Carnegie Baptist Church and Eureka Valley Baptist Church,both in St Joseph,MO. Along with her parents, Allen and Jesse Baker, Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Ford; a son, Bradley Ford; brothers, James Baker, Ray Baker, Charles “Bud” Baker; sisters, Nancy Louise Jacobs, Wanda Laverne Baker; and parents-in-law, Warden and Doris Ford. Survivors include her children: Jeffery (Dorothy) Ford; Kirby (Marthalee) Ford; Connie (Darren) Hale; one brother,Ronald (Elaine) Baker, all of St Joseph. Other survivors are grandchildren: Betsy (Bobby) Leidy of North Carolina; Aaron Ford,Jessica Ford, and Heather Ford all of St Joseph; three great-grandchildren; Claire Leidy and Kaleb Leidy of North Carolina and SydniFord of St Joseph. Bonnie is also survived by numerous nieces,nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Julia married Walter Malmberg. He preceded her in death.
She enjoyed traveling the world with her husband and daughter. Julia retired from Rocketdyne in Canoga Park, CA. She attended Grace Evangelical Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Byron Goodspeed.
Survivors include daughter; Terri L. Gann, grandson; Timothy J. Gann, niece; Linda (Goodspeed) Bradley, and 3 cousins.

Tamara Lynn Paulson

paulson_0001Tamara (Tami) Lynn Paulson, 54, Maitland, Missouri went home to the Lord on Sunday, February 19, 2017 at Mosaic Life Care.
She was born in Sioux City, Iowa on December 22, 1962, daughter of the late James and Shirley (Sumner) Paulson.
She graduated from East High School, Sioux City, Iowa in 1981.
Tamara married Arthur E. Davis on July 20, 2013. He survives of the home.
She proudly served in the Air Force. Tamara attended Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, where she studied music. She later taught in Craig, Missouri. Tamara loved playing piano, classical music and teaching music lessons. She attended First Christian Church in Mound City, Missouri, where she played the piano every Sunday.
Tamara was also preceded in death by both paternal and maternal grandparents; and brother-in-law, John Puhrmann.
Survivors include step-daughter, Cassandra Cancilla; step-son, Troy Davis; brother, Mark Skidmore (Kim), Alexandria, Minnesota; sisters, Theresa Puhrmann, Sequin, Texas,and Julie Biggers, Boerne, Texas; aunt, Sharon Fischer (Greg), Sioux City, Iowa; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

Willie Lee “Bill” Sullivan
1934-2017

unnamedHe was born Dec 20, 1934 in Hartshorn, MO to Marion J. Sullivan and Rosa (Briggs) Sullivan. He left home at an early age to work until he joined the US Army in 1959, and was discharged as an E6 SSGT. He served in The Big Red One Unit, at Fort Riley, KS and three years in Germany. He was discharged from the army on November 10, 1964, then joined the National Guard, serving a total of 22 years. He was a member of The Boy Scouts of America with his son. In this organization, he was a member of the Tribe of Mic O SAY, and tapped in 1975 as an Honorary Warrior with the tribal name “Many Parts,” and his son was named “Little Many Parts”. He had worked at many jobs including NAPA in Horton, Hiawatha and Atchison. Gary Coder Chevrolet in Horton, and he retired from the Kansas Department of Transportation after 20 years of service. In addition, he was a reserve officer in the Horton Police Reserves and Brown County Sheriff’s department.
Bill was married to Jean Rae Coffman May 12, 1959 and later divorced. Five children were born of this union: Russell Sullivan of Atchison, KS; Connie (Alan) Yaussi of Hiawatha, KS; Barbara (Douglas) Welch of Horton, KS; Brenda (Karl) Buttron of Lancaster, KS; and Cathy Nigus (Robert Rork) of Hiawatha, KS.
Bill married Carol Fisk-Tuttle, and they shared their lives together for 28 years. She survives along with two stepchildren: Alisha Tuttle of Springfield, MO and Scott Tuttle (Soco Reyes) of Riverside, MO. He has 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren with one on the way. Bill also is survived by one brother Dwain Sullivan (Linda) of Sperry, OK, a stepsister Patty Como, Kansas City, MO, several nieces and nephews, and a brother-in-law Louis Gracheck, of Colorado.
He is preceded in death by his parents Marion and Rosa, one sister Sharon Gracheck, and one son-in-law Gary Nigus.
Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and woodworking. He taught all of his children to swim in the beautiful rivers in Missouri where he spent his youth. His favorite places included Akers, Current River, Alley Springs, and Jacks Fork River. All of his children and several grandchildren enjoy canoeing these majestic rivers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left for a memorial bench to be placed at Mountain View Health Care, or Brown County Veterans Honor Guard, sent in care of Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, 124 S 7th St., Hiawatha, KS 66434.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday in Summerfield, Missouri. A Memorial Celebration Visitation will be held from 2-4 Sunday afternoon, March 12, at the Fisher Center in Hiawatha.

Gerald E. “Jerry” Alkire
1917-2017

4131103_wlppGerald Elvet “Jerry” Alkire, 99, or Sam to his family, passed away Monday, February 20th, 2017, in Hiawatha Kansas. Jerry was born at home to Timothy L. and Linnie (McBride) Alkire on December 4th, 1917. He went to be with his Lord and wife Jimmie on February 20th, 2017 He was the last of his siblings which included Virgil, Arnold, Timothy, Bessie (Neil), Goldie (Lance), and Doris (Roach). Jerry spent his early years in Barnard Missouri, graduating from Maryville High School. After graduating, Jerry entered the Army Air Corps in 1942, later the Air Force, from which he proudly served his country with honor thru WW II and for the next 21 years. He met and later married Jimmie Keith on June 28, 1953. While in the military, he and Jimmie enjoyed traveling throughout Europe and the Middle East, as well as being stationed in Morocco and Libya for a number of years. Upon returning to the United States, Jerry retired from the Air Force in California in September 1960, at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. It was in California where their daughter JheriKeith was born in October 1960, after which they moved to Hiawatha, Kansas in September 1961, where Jerry accepted the position of hospital administrator. Jerry remained at Hiawatha Hospital for the next 21 years, retiring in September 1981. Jerry was active in his church and Kiwanis. He loved gardening, his roses, golfing and fishing trips with friends. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Jimmie Keith. He is survived by his daughter Dr. JheriKeith Alkire, son-in-law Alan Davis, and the love of his life, Jack, as well as many nieces, nephews and numerous friends.
A Celebration of Jerry’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Friday, February 24, at First United Methodist Church in Hiawatha, with Rev. Wayne Castle and Rev. Jacob Cloud officiating.
The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services.

Mary Alice Bingaman

She was born May 27, 1929 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of the late Mary and Frank Smaich. She graduated from Benton High School and worked at Swift and company. Mary Alice married Thomas Bingaman, July 29, 1950 and they have shared 66 1/2 years of marriage together. She was a lifelong member of St. James Catholic church, and was involved in many committees with the Church. She was a member of the St. James Altar Society, and the Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, and was an avid cook. Mary Alice was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Lisa Ann, and son, Tim Bingaman. Survivors include husband, Thomas A. Bingaman of the home, sister, Angie (James) Deberry of Fairway, KS, as well as several cousins and many special friends. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 24, 2017, at 11:00 am at the St. James Catholic Church, Father Evan Harkins Celebrant. The Rosary will be recited at 6:00 pm, Thursday at the Rupp Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday at the Rupp Funeral Home. Gary E. Chandler
1947-2017

unnamedGary E. Chandler, surrounded by family, died peacefully Monday morning, February 20, 2017, at his home in Topeka. He was 69.
Gary was born at Sabetha, December 27, 1947, one of six children born to the late Eugene and Pansie Brunner Chandler. Gary grew up in Hiawatha where he attended school, graduating from Hiawatha High School with the class of 1965. He later graduated with an Associate’s degree in business administration from Highland Community College.
Gary worked most of his life as a revenue specialist for trucking firms: Churchill Truck Line of Chillicothe, MO; Jones Trucking of Springdale, AR; and retired after 22 years of service as senior revenue specialist for Yellow Freight Line.
Gary was a long time member of First Baptist Church. He had bragging rights in the ‘hole in one club.’
Gary married Linda Locke, September 21, 1968, at Chillicothe, MO. She survives.
Also surviving are their children: Carey (Brad) Shinneman of Jakarta, Indonesia, Candice (David) Ward of Rodgers, AR, Daniel (Katie) Chandler of Kansas City, MO; his siblings: Carolyn (Don) Hilgenfeld of Lincoln, NE, Connie (Duane) Widman of Topeka, Stephen (Kathy) Chandler of Hiawatha, Chris Ballew, also of Hiawatha, Cindy (James) Reynolds of Falls City, NE; 6 grandchildren: Lauren, Savanna, Matthew, Sage, Ben, Will; 2 great-grandchildren: Lilly and Sophia.
A Celebration of Gary’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday, February 23, at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center in Hiawatha, with David Elsberry officiating. Interment will follow at the Morrill Cemetery.

She was born January 16, 1923 to Alfred and Maude (Tate) Boone in Montgomery County, Missouri.
She married Francis D. Higgins on November 24, 1942. He preceded her in death on April 29th, 1996.
Susan enjoyed fishing, family and crocheting.
Mrs. Higgins was a devoted member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was president of the Women’s Missionary Union at Calvary Baptist Church and a Sunday School teacher most of her adult life.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Harvey Lee Boone, George Edwin Boone and Charles Burton Boone; sisters, Katie Boone DeLeal, Edna Lucille Boone Wendt and Clara Boone Honaker; and grandson, Christopher W. Taylor.
Survivors include her children, Sharon Smith, Polo, Missouri, Andrea Sutherland, Parkville, Missouri, Forrest Higgins, Wathena, Kansas, Carol Helean, St. Joseph, Gary Higgins, St. Joseph, Loren Higgins, Ozark, Missouri and Donna Dunn, Savannah, Missouri; 11 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Friday, February 17, 2017.
He was born October 9, 1982 to loving parents, Doug and Joanie (Bimbi) Tassi. Together with his older brother Sean, Jason had many adventures in Iowa, Mississippi, Missouri, Washington, Kansas and South Dakota. He talked to his mom every day and enjoyed outdoor trips with his dad. Jason was a fun-loving, kind, gentle and a fierce hockey player. In May 2012, Jason became the proud father of Preston Tassi. He delighted in his son and marveled at his ability.
Jason attended Electricians School in Des Moines, Iowa. He took pride in his workmanship and was known for getting the job done and the soulful music he played while doing it. Jason loved family gatherings and traditions. He made (and shared) the best jerky in town and spent hours twisting tiny tortellini pasta each Christmas season.
Jason will be lovingly remembered by parents, Doug and Joanie; son, Preston; fiancé Lacey Rose, and her son Jackson; brother, Sean Tassi (Elizabeth); grandfather, Roland Bimbi; He will also be dearly missed by his niece, Greta Tassi, and nephew, August Tassi.
Jason was preceded in death by his grandparents, Betty Bimbi and Ernest and Ethel Tassi.

He enjoyed NASCAR, KC Chiefs & KC Royals, Old Cars, he also enjoyed going to his daughters volleyball and basketball games. He was a member of the Community of Christ Church RLDS. Mario was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Harless. He is survived by wife, Alice Harless of the home, mother, Geraldine L Harless of St. Joseph, MO, daughters, Holly Kress (Bryce Dixon ) of St. Joseph, MO, daughter, Jamie Harless, and son, Cody Harless, grandchildren, Chelsey, Shane, Danica, Kaelyn, Carter, Hayden, and Hudson, and his brother, Bob (Mary) Harless of St. Joseph, MO. She was a Homemaker, who was always a good dresser, who loved to dance and spend time with her family. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harley Spillman, two brothers, Louis and Howard Martin, and a grandson, Wes Nigh. Survivors include, four daughters, Diane L. Wright, Harlene (James) Pankau, Connie (Dick) Smothers, and Shirley Melton (Larry Herring) all of St. Joseph, MO, seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.

cropped-7JoAnn Marie (Grace) Brewer, 82, of St. Joseph, passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2017, at the home of her daughter in Ferrelview, Mo.
JoAnn was born February 7, 1935 to Clyde and Mary Litson Grace in St. Joseph. JoAnn was a 1953 graduate of Benton High School. Soon after graduating, she began her career with Hallmark Cards. In October 1962, she returned to St. Joseph where she married Norman Brewer where they started a family. She later moved to Platte City where she resided for several years before eventually returning to her beloved St. Joseph. JoAnn was a member of the T-Cinco Club and loved art of all kinds.
Preceding her in death are her parents; husband Norman in 2003; and sister, Peggy Zager.
Survivors include her children, Christine Scrivens, Douglas Brewer, Kenneth Brewer, Constance Brewer, and David Brewer; a goddaughter, Deborah Reinking; seven grandchildren and dear friend Barbara Campbell.
Celebration of Life will be 1:00 p.m. Friday at Clark-Sampson Funeral Home with interment to follow in Ashland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Friday at Clark-Sampson Funeral Home.

Gaylord E. Garrison

He was born September 22, 1945 to Gaylord A. and Dixie (Coker) Garrison. They preceded him in death.
Gaylord married Barbara Sue Ann Hubbard on September 15, 1968. She preceded him in death on November 7, 1977.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge; Thirty-Second degree Scottish Rite Mason and Moila Country Club.
Gaylord was a dedicated father, raising two young sons after his wife’s passing. He was a Division Manager for Ore-Ida Foods for 20 years and was well liked by all who knew him.
Survivors include sons: Robert Garrison (Michelle), Springfield, Missouri and Ryan Garrison, Faucett, Missouri; grandson Grant Garrison; sister: Gaylia Garrison; his beloved dog Dixie; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Cunningham was a former member of St. Joseph Cathedral Catholic Church.

She attended Lafayette High School then married Adrian Sutton January 12, 1963 and he survives of the home. She worked at Skaggs drug store then Osco Drugs for over 20 years, and she also worked at the Snack Bar at the Firefighter Hall. She was very devoted to her children, grandchildren, and husband and she was a Christian. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Luella Russell. Survivors include, husband, Adrian Sutton of the home, daughters, Adrianna (Jerry) Mahler, King City, MO, Deborah Chamber (Maford Stevenson) St, Joseph, MO, son, David (Jolene) Sutton, St. Joseph, MO, six grandchildren: Johnathan Gust, Dorinda Chambers, Amber Nuding, Sidney Stevenson, Tyler Guess, and Tom Sutton, as well as numerous great grandchildren.

He married Marilyn Scholtz on October 7, 1983 and she survives of the home. He worked many years as an Industrial Refrigeration Contractor. He enjoyed gardening and going to Branson with his family and friends. He was a member of Francis Street First United Methodist Church, St. Joseph, MO. Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, son, Eddie Wise, former wife, Doris Klinginsmith, three sisters: Wyvonia Jones, Carmelita Akins, and Phyllis Campbell. He is survived by wife, Marilyn Wise of the home, daughters, Leslye Wise of St. Joseph, Debra Oliver of Columbia, MO, sons, Bob (Cindy) Wise of Fillmore, MO, Tony Wise of St. Joseph, MO, Ted (Lisa) Wise of Overland Park, KS, Brian (Angela) Parker of Chino, CA, 16 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and his sister, Lova (Charles) Shipp of King City, MO. She was born December 21, 1941 in Hannibal, Missouri to Lahman and Darlene (Wasson) Brock, they preceded her in death.
Sandra married John Byous July 20, 1963, he survives of the home.
She was a member of United Methodist Church in Helena, Missouri. She and her husband John were owners/operators of Byous Milk Hauling. Sandra also worked at Savannah R3 School District as a cafeteria cook. She later retired after eight years with Easton Machine Works.
Sandra was very active in fast pitch softball. She and her friends ran the concession stand at the ballpark in Helena, Missouri. She was also involved in the Savannah Sports Club while her children were in school. Sandra loved to shop.
Additional survivors include daughter, Tracie Garrett (Pat); son, Troy Byous (Patty); grandchildren, Johnna Wallingford (Cody), Brock Garrett, Alec and Drew Byous; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Benedict Church with Rev. Jeremy Heppler, OSB as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A parish rosary will be recited Friday, February 17, at 6:30 P.M. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 8:00 P.M. William J. Brady was born on July 30, 1942 in Frankfort, Kansas the son of Frank and Helen (Harrington) Brady. He attended Lillis Grade and Lillis High Schools, graduating from Frankfort High School in 1960. He graduated from St. Benedict’s College in 1964 and then graduated from Washburn University School of Law in 1967.
He and the former Beatrice “Bea” Bennett were united in marriage on April 8, 1967, at the Most Pure Heart of Mary Church in Topeka, Kansas.
Bill worked for 30 years for the U.S. Government Department of Agriculture. After retirement from the government, he worked for ten years for Valley Hope, Atchison, Kansas. He also managed farms in the Marshall County and Stafford County, Kansas areas.
Bill served his country for two years in the United States Army at Fort Greeley, Alaska where he attained the rank of Captain in the Judge Advocate General Corps. He received the Army Commendation Medal as well as other commendations. During his tour, he taught Business Law at the University of Alaska.
In 1979, he was awarded the National Endowment for the Humanities Grant “Federalism in Perspective” at the University of California, San Diego.
His memberships included the St. Benedict Parish in Atchison, KS, the Knights of Columbus Fitzgerald Council #1144 in Lillis, KS, and the Fleming-Jackson Seever Post #6 of the American Legion, and was Commander in 1975. He was one of the early members of the Fellowship of Catholic Scholars and the Religious Life Institute of the Catholic Church. Since his college days he has been an oblate of St. Benedict’s Abbey and continued to stay active in all Benedictine College Alumni activities.
Bill’s great grandparents were all Irish immigrants and he had a great affection for all things Irish, including Irish culture and faith. He had a great interest in genealogy; his knowledge of historical events, particularly church history, was sought by many.
Survivors include his wife, Beatrice “Bea” Brady, of the couple’s home in Atchison, KS, one son, COL (USMC) Richard (Jeanne) Brady, Falls Church, VA, two daughters, Anne (Charles) Feise, St. Louis, MO, Carole (Jeremy) Stempien, Scotch Plains, NJ, a sister, Mary (Charles) Bennett, Springfield, VA, six grandchildren, Katherine Brady, Jack Feise, Will Feise, Grace Feise, Bridget Stempien, Julia Stempien and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Helen Brady.

She attended Faucett High School and married James Kissick on February 18, 1967. She was a Homemaker, and a Baptist. Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, son, Garry Kunzler Jr., brothers, William, Louis, Bryan Keith, Frederick, Arthur, Walter Burley, and Brian Porter, two sisters Rosetta and Sarah Burley. Donald Gregory Howard

unnamedDonald Gregory Howard, 63 of rural Hiawatha passed away Monday February 13, 2017.
Don was born Sept. 4, 1953, to Gene and Rose (Rockey) Howard in Hiawatha. He graduated from Hiawatha High School and spent several years in the United States Army – stationed in Ft. Campbell, Ky., and Ft. Benning, Ga. Upon returning to Hiawatha with his family, Don worked for the City of Hiawatha streets department for more than 30 years, retiring in 2010.
Don met the love of his life, Terry (Kueck) Howard in Mayview, Mo. They married in 1974 and raised their three children in Hiawatha.
A true country boy, Don grew up on his family farm and spent many years helping his father farm the land. He loved hunting, and for many years looked forward to annual vacations in which he’d go deer hunting around Brown County with his brothers. He enjoyed fishing and spent many hours on the banks of the Brown County Lake with his children, brothers and nieces and nephews. He also spent countless hours with his family mushroom hunting. But above all hobbies, Don loved riding. He believed in the freedom of the road and found great peace when riding his one of Harley Davidsons – passion he passed on to his children.
He also enjoyed traveling and particularly loved the Hawaiian cruise he took with his wife to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in 1999. He was a long-time member of ABATE of Kansas, District 11 and was a member of the Masonic Lodge, reaching the rank of Grand Arch Mason.
Don was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, his mother-in-law Geraldine Prater, sister-in-law Betty Howard and infant granddaughter Aletha Rose Boothe.
Mourning his loss are his children Pat Howard of the home; Robert and Crystal Howard of Hiawatha; Stephanie and Joe Boothe of Independence, Mo; grandchildren Ethen, Donny and Tia Howard and Juliet and Anderson Boothe; parents Gene and Rose Howard of Hiawatha; brothers Gary and Kathy Howard and Charles Howard of Hiawatha; brothers-in-law Petey and Becky Kueck of Odessa, Mo., and Jay Kueck of Bowling Green, Mo; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, February 18, 2017, at Chapel Oaks Funeral home in Hiawatha Kansas. The family will receive guests one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. There will be a Celebration of Life immediately following services, at the Mike Dickinson residence, 1210 US 36 Highway, Hiawatha.

He worked at Las Vegas, NV as a casino manager. He served in the United States Army 7 years and is a veteran of the Viet Nam War. He enjoyed being with his kids and grandkids, helping other people, and going to the lake. Steven was preceded in death by his daughter, Carol Sue Pierce, wife, Joyce Elaine Kreb, and his parents. He is survived by two sons: Melvin Pierce, and Steven (Katrina) Kreb Jr., five daughters: Sheryl (Alvin) Page, Stephanie Kreb (Mike Sanchez), Elaine (Steve) Nigro, Debra (Bill) Marshall, and Krystal Pierce, 25 grandchildren, a sister, Susan, and two brothers, Alan and Kenny Kreb. Bill worked at Rainbow Bakery, Kovacs Grocery, the St. Joseph Fire Department, and he was the janitor for many years at Patee Park Baptist Church, where he attended church. He enjoyed watching wrestling and old movies. Bill was preceded in death by wife, Velma Jean Hayden, his parents, and a grandson, Danny Watson. Survivors include: sons, Tom (Cindy) Hayden of Saint Joseph, MO and Russ Hayden of Helena, MO, daughter, Gloria (Danny) Watson of Saint Joseph, MO, four grandchildren, Josh Hayden, Jeremy Hayden, Tasha Hayden, and Jody Watson, and 2 great grandchildren.

Calvin Coolidge Clay
1924-2017

unnamedCalvin Coolidge Clay, 92, walked into heaven on February 9, 2017. He was born on November 3, 1924 on his family’s farm North of Onaga, Kansas, the son of John and Julia (DuLac) Clay. Calvin graduated from Centralia High School in 1942 and entered the United States Navy as a part of the greatest generation in defense of our freedom during World War II; he served 26 months. After the end of the War he returned to his farming roots.
He married Mary Ellen Page April 13, 1952 at Grove, Kansas North of Silver Lake, she survives. They were blessed with two sons William Ross Clay (Darlene), Yukon, Oklahoma and Robert Nathan Clay (Linda), Rogers, Arkansas and one daughter Daisy Marie Parker (Alexander), Berryton, Kansas. He greatly loved his five grandchildren; Page and Abby Parker, Teresa (Nicholas) Sweet and Michael (Sarah) and David (Jenna) Clay they were the lights of his life. He was blessed to have four great grandchildren Ava Clay, Griffin Clay and Reece and Sarabelle Sweet.
Calvin was proceeded in death, by his father and mother (John 1957 & Julia 1983), three brothers; Ross 1941, Lawrence 1990 and Henry 1968 and three sisters; Catherine O’Donnell 2000, Florence Filkin 1998 and Rosemary Stadler 1987. He is survived by one sister Anna Mae Spacek of Topeka, Kansas.
Calvin was a farmer his entire life and was a true Steward of all of God’s creatures great and small. He raised cattle until about two years ago and raised pigs in his younger years. Calvin and Mary Ellen also raised dogs for several decades and had some row crops. Calvin was a member of the VFW Post 7772 in Onaga, KS and also a member of the American Legion Post 333 of Havensville, Kansas. He served on the Township board for over six years as a trustee. He spent over fifty years putting up American flags on all service member’s graves at the Neuchatel Cemetery for every Memorial Day and some 4th of July and Veteran’s Days.
Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 17th at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga. Burial with military honors will follow in the Neuchatel Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Onaga V.F.W. Post No. 7772 and may be sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 312, Onaga, 66521.
Calvin passed into eternity surrounded by family members and friends in a room overflowing with love. Blessed are those who are pure in heart, for they will see The Lord.

Barbara worked all of her adult life and enjoyed working at the Corner Drug Store in Bethany, Missouri, Hansen Pharmacy in Stanberry, Missouri, and the Hoof and Horn and the Frederick Inn in St. Joseph, Missouri, plus many other places.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wathena, Kansas.
Barbara married Wilbur Lee “Brown” Landes on October 25, 1947, They celebrated their 50th Anniversary in 1997. He preceded her in death on August 8, 2000. She was also preceded in death by her parents, sister, Maretta Stroud and a granddaughter, Amy Nicole Landes.

She graduated from Benton High School class of 1952, and married Lawrence “Larry” Wolfe on February 12, 1966 and he survives of the home. They were the owners and operators of Hadley’s Bar 3 restaurant in the Live Stock Exchange Building for 10 years until they sold their business in 1983 she was also a homemaker. She enjoyed quilting and crocheting., and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and St. Paul Lutheran Church. Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Leo Sexton Jr., and sister, Norma Compton. Survivors include, husband, Larry Wolfe of the home, daughters, Deola Wolfe, Sheryl Wolfe, grand-daughter raised in the home Olivia Wolfe-Williams, daughter Beth (Tom) Fletcher, sons, Theodore (Rosanne) Wolfe, Mark Wolfe, all of St. Joseph, and Jack (Debbie) Wolfe of Tenn, 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, niece, Susan Sexton raised in the home and numerous nieces and nephews.

Alfred T. Adkins

4101191_wlppAlfred T. Adkins, 72, of Hiawatha, died Tuesday morning, February 7, 2017, at the Hiawatha Community Hospital.
Alfred was born on a farm near Leona, September 22, 1944, one of fifteen children born to Samuel Franklin and Maude Randall Adkins, and had lived nearly all of his life in the Doniphan-Brown county area. He grew up in the Leona-Denton area where he attended country school. After he married, Alfred farmed south of Troy for nearly twenty years. He later worked as a janitor and drove the activity school bus for Troy schools for a number of years, prior to working for Doniphan County Road Dept where he retired.
He married Carolyn Mae Baxter, March 7, 1965, in Blair, KS. They owned and operated for twenty years “Carolyn’s Place” in Troy. She died April 11, 2005. Alfred was also preceded in death by his parents; a sister Erma Pole; four brothers: Sam, Melvin, Jack, Dick, and infant brother.
Survivors include three sons: Samuel Adkins of Hiawatha, Jeff Adkins of Junction City, Bobby Adkins of Holton; four brothers: Delbert Adkins of Hiawatha, Danny Adkins of Severance, Art Adkins of Troy, John Adkins of Beeville, Texas; four sisters: Betty Meyers of Bendena, Gert Hamilton of White Cloud, Cleo Stewart and Joyce Moppin, both of Severance. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
Funeral Services are planned for 10 a.m. Saturday, February 11, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland, with Don Harter officiating. Interment will follow at the Iola Cemetery, south of Sparks.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Friday, where the family will meet from 6 until 8 that evening.

Shirley was preceded in death by husband, Gerald Leo Sherlock, her parents, grandsons, Eddie Myers and Jimmy Walker, and her sister, Bertie Light. Survivors include, sons: Brad Sherlock and Gerald “Randy” Sherlock, daughters; Karen Schakel and Charlotte (Tom) Dick all of St. Joseph, MO, grandchildren: Donna Lane (Matt), Ben Sherlock, Jason Schakel, Tony (Kimmy) Schakel, Mallory Sherlock, Imogene Myers Barnett, James Myers, Denise Kissick, and Denis Myers, great grandchildren, Cecelia, Lauraly, Tucker, Davin, Savanna, Lucas, Taylor, Carson, Logan, Jymmah, Becky, Thomas, Eldon, River, and Conner.

She graduated from Elwood High School in 1972, and worked for the State of Kansas Revenue Department as a Licensing Agent. She married James Tiller on October 5, 1985, and he survives of the home. Margaret was a cat lover, enjoyed cutting hair, and going to the casino. She was a member of the Methodist Faith. Survivors include, husband, James, uncle and aunt, Jay and Frances Bauer of Las Vegas, NV, brother’s-in-law, Mike (Becky) Tiller of Kansas City and Glen Tiller of St. Joseph, MO, niece, Tiffany Tiller, and nephew, Brandon Tiller.

L. Jean Garreth, 89, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Thursday, February 2, 2017 at Mosaic Life Care.
She was born January 22, 1928 in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Jean was a graduate of Benton High School class of 1945. She later graduated from Northwest Missouri State University earning a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Education. After graduating she became a teacher for the St. Joseph School District retiring after 30 plus years.
She married Bob Z. Garreth on August 23, 1953. After 53 years of marriage he preceded her in death on January 26, 2007.
Jean loved singing, flowers, plants and vegetable gardening. She possessed the wonderful gift of hospitality and caring for others. She had a pure love that saw the best in all people.
Mrs. Garreth was a member of Community of Christ Church and attended Clarksdale Baptist Church with her daughter and son-in-law the past three years. She was a past member of the Hurlingen Women’s Farm Club, Missouri State Teachers Association and National Education Association.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Inez (Moore) Brooner; son, Charles Garreth; siblings, Allie Tolbert (Joe), Orman Brooner and Richard Brooner (ElMarie); brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Merle and Lois Garreth; brother-in-law, Myron Hedrick.

Jodi Lee Johnson, 42, St. Joseph, Missouri, formerly of Spencer, Iowa, passed away Thursday, February 2, 2017 at her home.
She was born February 8, 1974 in Spencer, Iowa.
Jodi married Randy Johnson May 8, 1999, he survives of the home.
She devoted her time to the Dream Factory. Jodi was active in church and in her belief with God. She loved her grandson Azrael with all her heart, he was her pride and joy. Jodi also had three other children, whom she did not raise but she loved and cared for them very much.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Helen and Marvin Petersen, Shirley Marble and Dale Clark.

Stephen J. “Steve” Hall

Stephen J. “Steve” Hall, 75, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Friday, February 3, 2017 at Mosaic Life Care.
He was born November 28, 1941 in St. Joseph, Missouri.
He married Ernestine Y. Nowak on October 4, 2000. She survives of the home.
Steve graduated from Central High School class of 1959. He played drums with Marilyn Maye, Pete Eye Trio, Frank Smith Trio, and Warren Durrett Big Band in Kansas City. From 1962 to 1965 he played with The Glenn Miller Orchestra under direction of Ray McKinley.
Mr. Hall served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1967 during the Vietnam War.
He graduated from Missouri Western State College in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in History and later graduated from University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado with a Master’s Degree in History in 1978.
He worked as an Assistant Registrar at Northwest Missouri State University from 1978 to 1983. He later moved to Manhattan, Kansas where he was a City Commissioner from 1993 to 1998, Mayor of the city of Manhattan from 1998 to 1999 and worked closely with Bill Snyder for his football program at Kansas State University.
Mr. Hall was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
Both Steve and his wife were avid lifelong St. Louis Cardinals Baseball fans. He loved sports, his pets and music. Steve was a very talented musician from the time he was a teenager.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Thad Curtis Hall; and his cats, Calico and Mr. Bumper.

He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Marilyn Pinyerd Boos; a brother Stanley, and sister in law Karen Ann Boos.
Steve is survived by his two sons: Matthew and Jason Boos; friend and confidant Carmen Yost; former wife Victoria Boos-McPhee; brothers and sisters: Michael Boos, Linda (Bill) Waldroop, Larry (Ginny) Boos, Janet (Harlan) Suther, John (Dru) Boos, Karen (Paul) Fisher, Debbie (Rick) Heiniger; Marilyn (Ted) Larson; sister-in law-Donna Boos; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Steve graduated Hiawatha High School with the class of 1970 and was a longtime employee at the Hiawatha Ford dealership where he was parts manager until he recently retired. Steve loved life and loved spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed watching KU basketball with this dog house buddies, fishing, golfing, and riding his motorcycle, to name a few.
A Celebration of Steve’s life is planned for 6:30 Tuesday evening, February 7, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha. Pastor Charlie Robinson will officiate. Cremation will follow services with family inurnment at the Denton Cemetery at a later date.

Lee was born February 15, 1954 to Lee Edward Sr. and Frieda (Stitt) McKinley in St. Joseph, where he lived most of his life. Lee was a 1972 graduate of Benton High School. He was of the Christian faith. On October 11, 1989, he married Andrea Nurski in St. Joseph. Lee worked for Johnson Controls for 22 years and later for KTAJ TV-16 and O’reilly Auto Parts. Lee lived his life to the fullest. He loved his family, and enjoyed fishing, cars, and Chiefs Football.
Preceding him in death are his parents; and a sister, Jeannine McKinley.
Survivors include his wife, Andrea, of the home; children, Lee Edward McKinley III, of St. Joseph, Heather McKinley of Kansas City, MO, and Miriam McKinley, of St. Joseph; siblings, Billy McKinley of Margate, Florida, Ruthie McKinley, of St. Joseph, and LaVonne McKinley-Cook, of St. Joseph; six grandchildren, Braden Ward, Casey Ward, Dre Davis, Ali Williams-McKinley, Kaeleigh Williams-McKinley and Amiya Williams-McKinley and step-mother, Theresa Paris, of Atchison, KS.

Dion Quintana Ni-kahn-ko-ek

TOPEKA – Dion Quintana, Ni-kahn-ko-ek, 55, of Topeka, died Saturday, February 4, 2017 at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka.
He was born August 13, 1961 in Folsom, NM, the son of Jake and Josephine Martinez Quintana. He served in the U.S. Army for nine years, earning the rank of sergeant. He also attended Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts School and was a chef in the army.
Dion was a Christian and a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
He owned and operated Mama’s Café in Topeka until his health forced him to retire.
Dion married Sandra L. Asselin on August 14, 1993 in Denver, CO. She survives, of the home.
Dion was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Rudolph Quintana, and two sisters, Marilyn Soph, and Carolyn Quintana, who died in infancy.
Other survivors include three daughters, Jessica Crowell (Randall), Carolyn “Sis” Quintana and Katie Quintana, all of Topeka; a brother, Donald Quintana, Denver; five sisters, Roselee Salazar, Margaret Bernal, Marie Maestas, Roberta Gonzalez, Frances Quintana and Angela Quintana, all of Denver; and four grandchildren.
A visitation and wake service will be Tuesday evening, February 7th at the Dance Ground, west of Mayetta. Burial with military honors will be Wednesday morning in the Metwe-Shobney Cemetery. Dion will lie in state until 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt.

She formerly lived in Bloomington, IL. Patricia loved motorcycles and her puppies, Wiggles & Sasha and she was a member of The Pentecostals of St. Joseph. Preceding her in death are: companion, Steven Thomas and a brother, Michael Anthony Bernard. Survivors include her parents, Willy & Loretta Bernard of Saint Joseph, MO; two sons, Dallas and Antonio; three brothers, Willy Jr., Carlos, and Jose Bernard; two sisters, Michelle Bernard and Raquel Padgett. Clarence “Jo” Elmer Olson

unnamedClarence “Jo” Elmer Olson Jr. 92, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed from this life Saturday February 4, 2017 in Saint Joseph. Born February 2, 1925 in St. Joseph, Missouri. He grew up in several northwest Missouri towns, where his father served as pastor in the Methodist Church, until moving to St. Joseph in his high school years. It was at St. Paul United Methodist Church that he met Carolyn Schadt. After graduating from Lafayette high school, he entered WWII in the Armored Infantry division, serving in the European theatre including the Battle of the Bulge. He returned to St. Joseph in 1945 and married Carolyn his best friend. After graduating from St. Joseph Junior College (now Missouri Western State University) in 1952, he worked at the Post Office in various positions from Clerk to Foreman of Carriers until his retirement in 1981. He then worked for OATS from 1982 to 1995 as a driver and then planner of OATS mystery Tours, becoming a Branson Tour expert, he started Branson Tours at St. Paul UMC later known as Old Jo’s Tours. He was also known as Poet Laureate of St. Paul due to his generous writing of poems and limericks for many occasions. He enjoyed playing cards, and games with his friends at the Living Community, and was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Jo was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Schadt Olson, parents: Clarence E and Vera Rose Olson, and a brother Ward Olson. He was born December 30, 1943 in Pittsburg, California, son of the late Phil W. Malone and Helen M. Zulauf. He graduated from Plattsburg High School, Highland Community College, and Peru State Teachers College, Peru, NE. He retired from Johnson Controls after 37 years of service. He was an avid hunter and loved fishing, he was a spectator of all sports, especially football and enjoyed coaching little league baseball. In his college years he was an All-American Football Player at Highland Junior College in Highland, KS., and All -American Honorable Mention for Peru State Teachers College in Peru, NE. He also played football on the farm club for the Green Bay Packers. Phil was a former member of St. James Church, where he served as president of the Holy Name Society and on the Parish Council.
He was preceded in death by his father, Phil W. Malone, mother, Helen M. Zulauf, and a brother, Larry Malone. Survivors include two daughters, Catherine (Kevin) Echterling of St. Joseph, MO, Debora (Ken) Bell of Virginia Beach, VA, son, Bill (Jenny Pham) Malone of Katy, TX, sister, Sue Malone of Plattsburg, MO, loving companion of 19 years, Sue A. Garner, former wife, Ida M. Schiffbauer of Seneca, KS, 4 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and his good friend Brad Ferris. Juanita Marie Kneisel

unnamedJuanita Marie Kneisel, 96, of Hiawatha, died early Wednesday morning, February 1, 2017, at Maple Heights Nursing Home, where she had been a resident for over eight years.
Juanita was born at Hiawatha, December 30, 1920, one of eight children born to the late Orion and Bertha Lupold Welsh and was a lifelong Hiawatha resident. She attended schools here, graduating with the class of 1939. Juanita worked many years at the Hiawatha Daily World where she assisted putting the paper together, by hand. That was when the World was printed 5 days a week. She later worked at the Sears Catalog Store in Hiawatha for several years before retiring.
Mrs. Kneisel was a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of rural Fairview; and the Dorcas Society of the Church. She also was a member of the ladies auxiliary to Homer-White Post #66, Hiawatha American Legion. Juanita was a kind and giving person, always had a smile and was always concerned about the other person. If she had a bad day, it never showed.
She married George “Shorty” Kneisel, June 14, 1945, at the Powhattan Lutheran Church. They made Hiawatha their home where they raised their three daughters. He died November 1, 2000. Juanita was also preceded in death by her siblings: Nelson, Cleda, Eugene, Marvin, Harlan, Carol Joan, infant sister Betty; and son in law Larry Brockhoff.
Survivors include her daughters: Diane Brockhoff of rural Fairview, Nancy (Ronald) Jones of Hiawatha, Peggy (Brian) Estes of Marysville; grandchildren: Mike 9Kellie) Brockhoff, and Cathy Brockhoff, Jason Rosenberger, Tara Lockhart; great-grandchildren: Casey, MaKayla, Megan, Spencer, Deryk, and Chase.
A Celebration of Juanita’s life is planned for 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 3, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, with Pastor Michael Dunaway and Pastor Sean Kilgo, will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.
Friends may call after 12 noon Thursday, where the family will meet from 6 until 7:30 that evening.

She was a life-long resident of St. Joseph, a graduate of Central High School and Platt-Gard Business University. Employed at the former Midwest Federal Savings and Loan Association and retired from Iowa-Missouri Walnut Company in 1986.
She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and of the former Elizabeth Prescott Club. She was an active member of Frederick Blvd Baptist Church. Helen enjoyed traveling, she visited nine countries in Europe, Hawaii, Australia, Israel, Canada, forty-nine states and especially liked classical music.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Sr. and Bessie (Hack) Kadera; sisters, Viola M. Soule (Noel), Mary Elizabeth Cook (Floyd), and Dorotha J. Curd (William Hugh) all of St. Joseph Missouri; one brother, Joseph, Jr. of Rancho Palos Verdes, California.
Survivors include close friends, Sharon and Cary Cornelius; her Sunday school class at Frederick Blvd. Baptist Church; her church family and Rev. Chad Crooks; sister-in-law, Christal Kadera of Rancho Palos Verdes, California; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Ruth Amelia Niemeyer Titus

4086942_wlppRuth Amelia Niemeyer Titus, 92, of Falls City, Nebraska, passed away January 25, 2017, at Falls City Care Center.
Ruth was born February 4, 1924, in Falls City, the daughter of Ernest and Edna Gibble Niemeyer and was a lifelong resident of the Falls City area. She was raised on the family farm SE of town they farmed, ran a weekend popcorn business, as well as, the local dairy creamery.
She married Frank Titus, January 1, 1940 and together they raised three children. While Frank worked at the Post Office, Ruth did gardening and canning. She took in laundry for many years and was active with the Nemaha Valley Rabbit Breeders Association. Ruth also spent several years working at the local nursing home prior to taking care of the local Laundromat. Frank died December 17, 1991.
Ruth enjoyed yard sales, as well as, being a talented seamstress and quilter. She collected glassware, bells, oil lamps, glass paperweights, and rabbit figurines.
Ruth was a long time member of Grace Baptist Church.
In 1998, Ruth and Vernon Moorshead from Robinson, exchanged vows and made their home in Falls City until his death March 23, 2002.
Ruth is survived by her children: Jeraldine McDonald, James (Joyce) Titus, and Julie (Randy) Houser, all of Falls City; 8 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Other survivors include Vernon’s children: Vernon Moorshead, Jean Soden, Vernetta McDonald, Verna K. Talbot, Frances Schoolcraft; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; and her brother Robert.
A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held on her birthday, 2 p.m. Saturday, February 4, at the Christ Church of Falls City, 705 Stone St., Falls City, with Dan Farley officiating. Private inurnment will be at a later date.

Larry was preceded in death by his daughter, Tara Irene Coon, his parents, adopted parents, Earnest & Bessie Coon, and step-sister, LaDonna Coon. He is survived by wife, Sandra Coon of St. Joseph, MO, four daughters, Saundra (Wes) Sarnowski, Laurie Coon, Tina Frogge, and Mary Coon of Brandamore, SD, three grandchildren, one great grandchild, a brother, Jerry (Nina) Coon, two step-brothers, Fred and Ernie Coon, four step-sisters, JoAnna Coon, Brenda Sears, Earnestine Marsh, and Diana Coon of St. Joseph, MO, and several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 10:30 AM at the Souls Harbor Pentecostal Church, 6620 Brown Street, St. Joseph, MO. Mary Lilia Barron, 82, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at Mosaic Life care.
She was born August 25, 1934 in Pagosa Junction, Colorado.
Mary enjoyed art, crochet, sewing and going to garage sales. She loved spending time with her family especially taking care of her grandchildren.
Mrs. Barron was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents Anastacio Duran and Carlota (Vasquez) Herrera and step-father, Joseph Herrera; husband, Benjamin A. Barron, Sr.; husband, David Rodewald; sister, Josie H. Smith; sons, Stevie, David and John Barron; granddaughter, Carissa Barron; grandson, Kain Barron; and niece, Autumn Nordin.
Survivors include her daughters, Mary Brown, Ruth Moore, Gloria Barron, Teresa Mahoney (Jim), Lora Barron-Helfery, Stephanie Becerra (Ronnie), Christy McGaughy (Preston) all of St. Joseph; sons, Ben, Jr., Joseph, Sr. (Sharon), Stephen (Donna) and Mark Barron (Shauna) all of St. Joseph; daughter-in-law, Kim Barron; 42 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren; twelve great-great grandchildren; sisters, Ida Mace (Jessie), Bernice Kiefer and Polly Costello; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Donna was born May 3, 1957 in Sabetha, Kansas the daughter of Donald Grier and Betty Hayes Russell. She attended Washington Elementary School and graduated from Atchison High School, where she was a cheerleader. She then attended the Northeast Kansas Vocational Technical School where she received a license of practical nursing.
She took pride in her nursing career and nurtured many individuals throughout the years at the Leavenworth VA Hospital and various nursing facilities, specializing in geriatrics.
Donna was a faithful servant of God. She was a very lively person who enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed writing poetry, dancing, and singing. She was a founder of the Atchison Juneteenth Committee and served faithfully on the committee for ten years. She has enjoyed attending her high school class reunions for the class of 1975.

He was born November 22, 1956 in St. Joseph, MO, son of the late Opal and Robert Nell. He married Debbie Hahn on December 31, 1976, and she survives of the home. He retired from the Construction Labor Union #579 as a Labor Foreman after 35 years of service. He then worked at MODOT for 5 years. He enjoyed hunting & fishing, snagging fish, but most especially spending time with his grandkids. He was a member of the 4 F Flathead Club, and the Labor Union 579. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Robert “Bud” Nell, and maternal grandparents, Ralph & Margarett Rollett. Survivors include, wife, Debbie of the home, two son’s, Travis Nell (Fiancee, Leslie Cox) of St. Joseph, and Thomas (Heather) Nell of Excelsior Springs, MO, two sisters, Mona Christopher and Tina (Toby) Herring, and a brother, Terry Nell of St. Joseph, MO, five grand childen, Alexis, Maddie, Luke, Joslin, and Justin Nell, and a special niece, Cayla Curley.

David E. Safarik
1958-2017

David E. Safarik, 59, of Hoyt, died Friday, January 27, 2017.
He was born January 17, 1958 at Holton, the son of LeRoy and Carol Hess Safarik. He graduated from Wetmore High School in 1976.
David was a member of the Hoyt United Methodist Church, Circleville Masonic Lodge No. 20, A.F&A.M., and Mayetta Masonic No. 393. David was very musically inclined and had played taps from an early age at Memorial Day services and for many veterans’ funerals. He was an avid deer hunter and fisherman.
He had worked as a welder at Caterpillar in Wamego and currently worked for Industrial Chrome in Topeka. He also did small engine repair from his home.
He married Jan R. Holston on May 19, 1995 at the Hoyt United Methodist Church. She survives, of the home.
David was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Delbert LeRoy Safarik and Dennis James Safarik.
Other survivors include his sister, Judy Hollabaugh, Topeka and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Service arrangements are pending and will be finalized early next week.

Severance, Kansas – Neale I. Ellsworth, 73, of Severance, Kansas passed away Friday, January 27, 2017 at the Leavenworth V.A. Hospital.
Neale was born on February 24, 1943 in Severance, Kansas to Clarence M. & Shirley (Coy) Ellsworth.
He worked in construction and as an over the road truck driver. Neale served in the U.S. Navy.
Neale married Peggy Lee Bennett on November 17, 1966 in New Jersey. She preceded him in death on July 7, 2006. He was also preceded in death by his parents.

She was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, St. Ann’s Altar Society, 4-H leader for 15 years, Happy Valley Homemaker Extension Unit & American Legion Auxiliary. Nadine retired in 1991 from JC Penny’s as a seamstress. She made many people happy by being able to sew, alter & mend their clothes.
Nadine married Francis Delzeit on February 25, 1946 in Hiawatha, Kansas. He preceded her in death on December 1, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents & a brother, Roscoe “Pete” Richter.

Shirley R. Duran
1933-2017

unnamedShirley R. Duran, 83, of Highland, died early Saturday morning, January 28, 2017, at Highland Healthcare Center where she had been a resident for nearly 10 years.
Shirley was born at Horton, August 17, 1933, one of two children born to Francis Murray and Goldie Elizabeth Huber Coleman. She grew up at Troy. She graduated at Highland High School in 1951; then attended and graduated Highland Junior College. Shirley later graduated from Emporia State University with a master’s degree in English literature. She returned to the area where she taught in Doniphan County schools, Sydney, Iowa, and Southeast Nebraska schools including Rulo until 1964. In 1965, she moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where she worked for the Environmental Protection Agency until 1996, when she retired and shortly thereafter, returned to Highland to make her home.
Shirley loved to raise a garden, especially digging in the dirt for her pretty flowers.
She married Robert C. Jones, August 23, 1956 before they divorced. She married Nick Duran December 7, 1974 which also ended in divorce.
Survivors include her children: Michael (Robin) Jones of rural Highland, daughter Teresa Price of White Cloud; grandchildren: Mike (Mindy) Jones, Caicey (Che) Jones, Sean (Nadia) Price; four nieces Michelle (Glenn) Wyatt, Valerie Coleman, Rhonda Roland, Leslie Coleman; four great-grandchildren: Conner, Lexi, Lane, and Wyatt.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Lester, sister-in-law Helen and a niece, Ruth.

Stephen L. Smith
1945-2017

Steve was born November 19, 1945 in Highland, Kansas. He made his home in the Doniphan and Brown County, Kansas area all his life. Steve attended Highland Community College and then went onto graduate from Kansas University’s Pharmacy School in 1968. Steve was drafted into the army that same year and served two years before returning to Hiawatha, Kansas in 1970 to establish Steve’s Corner Drugs. His commitment to professional excellence lead to statewide collaboration and awards throughout his career. Steve placed a high priority on being an integral part of the community, volunteering and planning whenever asked, and serving on many community boards, including hospital, mental health, hospital foundation and, as a long family tradition, a 4-H club leader for 19 years. A committed member of the First United Methodist Church for multiple decades, Steve took active leadership roles in many church committees. Throughout his life, he enjoyed agriculture with retirement years focused on many hours of gardening and other farm activities with his grandchildren. Steve’s attentiveness to every person in his life touched all who knew him.
Steve married Suzan Good on December 30, 1970. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, F.B. Smith. Steve is survived by his wife Suzan, daughter Rachel Smith, Hiawatha; son Matthew (Cari), Smith, Sabetha; son Stuart (Tanna) Smith, Sharon Springs; daughter Mariah (Thomas) Lewis, Raymore, Missouri; brother Thomas (Elizabeth) Smith, Highland; sister Carol (Leonard) Smith, Kansas City, Missouri; and nine grandchildren: Jessie, Andrew and Jay Smith; Tyler and McKenzie Lewis; and Ryder, Nathan, Holt and Landry Smith. Steve enjoyed his large extended family, which includes many cousins as well.
Celebration of Steve’s life is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday, February 2, at First United Methodist Church in Hiawatha, with Pastor Jacob Cloud officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery, with military honors a courtesy of the Brown County Veterans Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Missy Newell Memorial Fund, First United Methodist Church, or a charity of the donor’s choice, which may be sent in care of Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, 124 S 7th St., 66434.

She was born December 9, 1913 in Barnard Missouri.
Vona married Wayne Griggs October 5, 1931, he preceded her in death on September 18, 1986.
She and her husband lived in Rea, Missouri before moving to St. Joseph in 1971.
Vona enjoyed watching wrestling and loved the gameshow Family Feud.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Lois Garreth; son, Gabe Griggs; grandsons, Bobby and Rory Griggs; and her beloved dog Taco.
Survivors include grandchildren, Dennis Garreth (Susan), Randy Griggs, Roger Griggs, Rex Griggs (Delta), Kimberly Powell (David), Rodney Griggs (Tracy), Russell Griggs (Phyllis), Rendell Griggs (Theresa); numerous great and great-great grandchildren.

Lela May Ivey, 89, of St. Joseph, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2017 in St. Joseph.
Ms. Ivey was born September 9, 1927 to Thomas Miller and Eva (Walch) DeHass in Kansas City, Kansas.
On November 7, 1947, she was united in marriage with Merle Ivey. He preceded her in death on November 10, 2001.
Lela Mae was a homemaker and member of The First Baptist Church and The Dorcas Sunday School Class.

She was born February 8, 1921 in Camden Point, Missouri to William and Emma (Cozad) Stubbs, they preceded her in death.
Maxine married Wayne L. Deatherage December 31, 1970, he preceded her in death on April 9, 1997.
She enjoyed basketball and never missed a day of school.
She was also preceded in death by daughters, Georgia Rader and Rebecca Groshong; siblings, Sarah Frisbie, Berthie Hershley and Delbert Stubbs.

Floyd W. “Mike” Peak, 73, Atchison, Kansas died unexpectedly Monday, January 23, 2017 at his home.
Funeral services will be Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 10:30 A.M. in the chapel of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Ziegler officiating. Interment will follow in the Alderson Cemetery, west of Atchison. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Trinity Lutheran Church and may be left in care of the funeral home.
Floyd was born March 22, 1943 in Atchison, Kansas the son of Asa W. and Edna Clark Peak. He attended schools in Atchison, graduating from Atchison High School in 1961.
He was formerly employed at Boeing in Wichita, Kansas then returned to Atchison where he worked as a machinist and in maintenance for Rockwell International for over twenty five years until his retirement.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Mike enjoyed woodworking and making several pieces of furniture, reading, fishing and spending time with his family.
He is survived by a sister, Rita M. Watowa, Atchison, KS; two brothers, Robert “Bob” (Teresa) Peak, Atchison, KS; Richard “Dick” Peak, Udall, KS.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Janet Marie Peak; three brothers, Gary Peak, Lloyd Peak and Asa Warden Peak, Jr, and a sister-in-law, Pam Peak.

Mary Lou Diebolt
1921-2017

Mary Lou Diebolt, homemaker and retired retailer, died Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at her home in Lake Waukomis, MO at the age of 95.
Private funeral services will be held with interment in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The final arrangements have been entrusted to the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, Atchison, Kansas.
Mary Lou was born September 26, 1921 in Moline, Kansas the daughter of William Francis and Nellie May Hill.
She worked as an executive secretary at Beechcraft during World War II. Mary Lou and her husband moved to Atchison, KS where Mr. Diebolt opened the Diebolt Clothing Co. in 1962. Mrs. Diebolt took over Diebolt’s women’s department and ran it until it closed in 1985.
She was a member of St. Benedict’s Church in Atchison.
She is survived by her daughters, Mary Carol (Daniel) Garrity of Lake Waukomis, Judith Diebolt of Grosse Pointe Farms, MI a son, Timothy (Deanna) Diebolt of Leawood. Also surviving are three granddaughters, Lydia Diebolt, Rebecca Diebolt Hever, Kelly Garrity Bieri and three great grandchildren.

David Wayne Dennis

He was born May 17, 1964 in St. Joseph, MO, son of Betty Ann and Fred Dennis Sr. He graduated from Central High School and was proud of his participation in the ROTC. He worked at Specialty Industries for 32 years, enjoyed the Kansas City Royals, and Chiefs football. He was an organ donor, and was involved with the Special Olympics. David was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Donna Jean Dennis, 2 brother in laws, Ronald Parton, and Earl Vandrift. Survivors include, brother, Fred (Cindy) Dennis Jr. of Rosendale, MO, five sisters, Virginia (David) Grippando, Phyllis (Bob) Wood of St. Joseph, MO, Eva May (Frank) Wood, Neva Kay Vandgrift of Clarksdale, MO, and Kathy (Tommie) Edwards of Saint Joseph, MO, numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Thursday, at the Rupp Funeral Home, funeral services will be conducted at 10 AM Friday, at the Rupp Funeral Home, the inurnment will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, at the Ashland Cemetery. She attended the Holy Rosary Catholic Elementary, was a homemaker who enjoyed volunteering at Interserv, and at the Good Will. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. Carmen was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Dorothy King, and a brother, Jose Torres, Jr. Survivors include sisters, Patricia Mesino, Matilda “Tillie” Davis, Margaret Wilson, and Genevieve “Jennie” Mozier, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at 10:00 am at the St. Patrick Catholic Church, Fr. Chuck Tobin Celebrant. The Rosary will be recited at 6:00 pm, Friday with the family to receive friends until 8:00 PM on Friday at the Rupp Funeral Home. The Interment will be at the Mount Olivet Cemetery.
