3915388St. Joseph, Missouri, Jack W. Thompson, aka “Jack Daddy” will be greatly missed. He passed away Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at the age of 62.
He is survived by his girlfriend, Tonya Summers, who never left his side.
His caring sister Linda Westrem and by the prides of his life, his 3 children; Jake, Becky and Bobbi Thompson. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Donald & Mary Thompson.

Charlotte was born September 18, 1924 in Cincinnati, Ohio the daughter of Harry and Helen “Snowwhite” Wilson Fox. She attended schools in Hamilton, Ohio; Metamora, Indiana and Brookfield, Indiana.
Charlotte and Dennis E. Upchurch were married June 10, 1944, and later divorced. She and David Barajas were united in marriage on October 31, 1961 in Atchison, Kansas. Mr. Barajas preceded her in death in 1996.
Mrs. Barajas was a homemaker, a devout wife and mother to their children.

Cinda was born on January 19, 1953 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Robert Carl & Anna Lou (Cox) Grieme.
She graduated Platte Business School & worked in administration for years including Wyeth Company & HCC. Then went to work in food services for 20 plus years, retiring from Doniphan West. She loved to cook, especially for Consumer Oil Company, during their end of year celebrations.
Cinda married Dennis Warren Wright on April 28, 1979 in St. Joseph, Missouri. He preceded her in death on December 21, 2014. She was also preceded in death by her parents & two brothers, Bob & Louie Grieme.

Joann Madeline Pickerel, 84, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Sunday, October 2, 2016 in Saint Joseph at her home. She was born August 8, 1932 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of Ellen and Orville Jones. She graduated from Benton High School class of 1950. She worked at Kresge’s, Woolworths, Woolco, and K-Mart as a retail clerk, then at the Hyde School Cafeteria. She enjoyed going to Church every chance she got, spending time with her family, and sitting on her front porch listening to her wind chimes. She was a founding member of the Heritage Church. Joann was preceded in death by her parents, husband, John Henry Pickerel Jr., sister, Marie Piercy, three brothers, Robert, Orville, and Donald Jones. Survivors include: three sons, John H. Pickerel, III of Saint Joseph, MO, Jeff (Charla) Pickerel of St. Joseph, and James (Darice) Pickerel of Agency, MO, daughter, Julie Pickerel of Saint Joseph, MO, 4 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren.
Graveside Funeral Services and Interment will be conducted on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the Ashland Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be conducted later that evening at 7:00 PM Tuesday, at the Heritage Church, 2407 Messanie, St. Joseph. James A. Kamler

James A Kamler 83, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Monday October 3, 2016 at the Missouri Veterans Home, Cameron, Missouri. He was born January 8, 1933 in St. Joseph, Missouri son of Marie & Walter Kamler. He graduated from Christian Brothers High School, and served in the Navy and the Air National Guard. He worked as a policeman at the St. Joseph Police Department for 10 years, Dugdale Meat Packing Plant for 15 years. and retired from the St. Joseph School District. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Kamler, his parents, and a brother, Walter A. Kamler. Survivors include: daughter, Teresa Kamler and partner Kim Brugger of Kansas City, MO, son, Richard Kamler of St. Joseph, MO, grandson, Jeffrey A. (Sarah) Kamler of Kansas City, MO, 2 great grandchildren, Riley & Charlene. A graveside memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday at Mt.Olivet Cemetery. Father Evan Harkins officiating. He will be cremated under the direction of the Rupp Funeral Home.

Nancy June Wahwassuck Conboy Wabnoquah
1932-2016

Nancy June Wahwassuck Conboy, Wabnoquah, 84, of Mayetta, died Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at her home on the Potawatomi Reservation.
She was born June 30, 1932 on the reservation, the daughter of John and Josette Nagonbe Wahwassuck.
Nancy was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and the Drum Religion.
She had worked for the Honeywell Corporation in Philadelphia for many years, retiring in the 1990’s.
Nancy married Peter J. Conboy, Jr. on June 16, 1961 in Miami, OK. He died in September of 2002.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Alice Marie Conboy Gartland, sisters, Florence “Gumpy” Ross, Twila “Charlie” Lee, and Mamie Rupnicki, and brothers, John “Doc” Wahwassuck, Jr., Jewett “Swede” Wahwassuck, Raphael “Bugger” Wahwassuck, Sr., Henry Wahwassuck, and “brother dear”, who died in childhood.
Survivors include two daughters, Rencie Eteeyan and Josette Wahwassuck Whitlock, both of Mayetta; three brothers, Peter Wahwassuck, Washington state, James Wahwassuck, Delia, and Merriell “Meatball” Wahwassuck, Sr., Mayetta, four grandchildren, Jessica Medicinebird, Samantha L. Wahwassuck, Barush Eteeyan Escamilla and Arnen Eteeyan Escamilla, and three great grandchildren, Andre Joe Kitchkommie, Kiyah R. Kitchkommie and Leo A. Wahquahbushkuk, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Drum services will be Thursday evening, October 6th at the Dance Ground, west of Mayetta. Burial will be Friday afternoon in the Wahwassuck Cemetery. Nancy will lie in state Wednesday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt where visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Geradette “Geri” Murray Dyche

unnamedGeradette “Geri” Murray Dyche, 64, of Hoyt, formerly of Topeka, died Friday, September 30, 2016 at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City.
She was born November 14, 1951 in Visalia, CA, the daughter of John and Ezaura Sylvia Vierra. She graduated from Tulare Union High School in Tulare, CA in 1969 and attended Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, CA.
Geri was a former member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Topeka, and a Lector at the church. While living in St. Joseph, MO she attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. In Topeka she was involved in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, the Catholic Singles Group, Beginning Experience and the Topeka Chamber of Commerce.
She moved to Topeka after being hired by Adams Business Forms to automate all company processes. She later built and managed her own business for many years, eBiz Software.
On October 11, 2003 she married Steve Dyche in Clinton, MO. They made their home in St. Joseph, MO, until recently moving to the Hoyt area. He survives, of the home.
Geri was preceded in death by her parents and her grandmother, Agnes Sylvia.
Other survivors include a son, Bryan Murray and fiancé Casey Cole, Fort Collins, CO; a step-son, Steven Dyche and wife Cathie, St. Clair, MO; a step-daughter, Lynn Bowser and husband, Peter, New Haven, CT; one brother, Gene Vierra and wife Marcia, Arroyo Grande, CA, a sister, Cynthia Shaffer and husband Reed, Tulare, CA; ten grandchildren and one great grandson.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 4th at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Mayetta. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery at Hoyt. Geri will lie in state Monday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt where visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary prayed at 6:30. She graduated from Lafayette High School, and married Steven Kalamon on March 10, 1970. She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking fish, and spending time with her family. She was a Catholic. She was preceded in death by father, Donald Townsend, mother, Jeannine Jo Bates, two sons, Steven Kalamon and Jeffrey Kalamon, and a brother, Michael Lane. He was a loving husband and father who loved fishing on the river, hunting, watching the Chiefs and Mizzou football. Kermit was preceded in death by father, Bill J Filley, Sr., mother, Pat Jones, brother, Bill J. Filley, Jr., and step father, Paul Jones. Survivors include, wife, Cindy Filley of the home, son, Mitchell Filley, daughter, Halea Filley, step son, Josh Polley, two brothers, Mark Filley, twin Kevin Filley, sisters, Lori (Phillip) Bish, and Paula (Terry) Dye, grandsons, Jacob Polley and Justin Steele, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

unnamedElbert L. Bennett, 91, of Faucett was reunited with his beloved wife, Dorothy L. Bennett on Wednesday, September 28, 2016.
Elbert was born on August 3, 1925 in Halls, Mo. to Omar O. and Effie L. (Ebling) Bennett. A lifelong resident of Buchanan County, he was married to Dorothy Green on May 26, 1945. They shared 68 years of loving marriage before Dorothy proceeded him in death on June 19, 2013.
Elbert was an outgoing and hardworking small businessman and talented mechanic. He was known to many South Side residents as the owner of Bennett’s Apco and Bennett’s Motors. He was also a member of Faucett Baptist Church.
He was an adoring husband, cherished father, doting grandfather, and beloved brother and uncle. Elbert was preceded in death by his parents, Omar and Effie; wife, Dorothy; brothers, Elmer and Virgil Bennett; and sisters Flora Jordan and Ora Conley. He will be deeply missed by his surviving family: daughter, Sharon K. Spicer; son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Margaret Bennett; brother, Charlie Bennett; brother-in-law, Farold Jordan; granddaughter, Veronica L. Spicer; grandsons, Brian, Greg and Nicholaus Bennett; and six great-grandchildren.

Clarence married Gladys Marie Fleck on April 21, 1986.
Mr. Meers was of the Methodist Faith and was a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge, 32° Scottish Rite Mason, Moila Shrine.

Lisa C. Eylar, 48, Atchison, Kansas passed from this life peacefully, surrounded by her family on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri.
Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Benedict’s Abbey Church with Rev. Jeremy Heppler, OSB as celebrant. A parish rosary will be recited on Monday, October 3, 2016 at 6:00 P.M. at St. Joseph’s Church with visitation with the family to follow until 8:00 P.M. Memorial contributions are suggested to Maur Hill-Mount Academy School and may be left in care of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with whom the final arrangements have been entrusted.
Lisa was born August 25, 1968 in Falls City, Nebraska the daughter of Edward J. and Glenda L. Lunsford Huber. She moved with her family to Atchison, Kansas where she attended Catholic elementary school and Atchison Public Elementary School. She graduated from Atchison High School in 1986.
She and Timothy W. “Tim” Eylar were united in marriage on October 22, 1988 at St. Joseph’s Church in Atchison.
Lisa began working during her junior year in high school as a sales representative for Runyan Jewelers in Atchison, continuing until 1999. She then became employed with Atchison Catholic Elementary School in 2000, later renamed St. Benedict’s School until 2015 as the school secretary and the “go to” person at the school. She then transferred to Maur Hill-Mount Academy School as office manager continuing until her untimely death due to complications of Lupus.
She was a member of St. Benedict Parish in Atchison. Lisa enjoyed baking and being in her kitchen at home where she was fondly known by her family, to be able to whip up a batch of cookies at a moments notice. Her passion was when her family were together, spending time on a vacation or birthday parties and extending that time as long as she could. She was the epitome of fun, love, and strength to her nieces and nephews and the numerous children at the school.
Survivors include her husband, Tim Eylar, of the couple’s home in Atchison, a son, Dawson Eylar, Atchison, KS, her father, Ed Huber, Atchison, KS; three brothers, Mark (Rochelle) Huber, Elk Grove, CA; Tom (Monique) Huber, Atchison, KS; Larry Huber, St. Joseph, MO; and a sister, Sue Huber, Atchison, KS.
Lisa was preceded in death by her mother, Glenda Lee Huber.

Sr. Benedicta Boland, OSB
1925-2016

unnamedSister Benedicta Boland, OSB, 91, a Benedictine sister of Mount St. Scholastica, Atchison, Kan., died Thursday, September 29, 2016, at the monastery. The vigil service will be Sunday, October 2, at 7 p.m. in the monastery chapel, and the Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated there on Monday, October 3, at 10:30 a.m.

Born on a family dairy farm in Port Hudson, Mo., Sister Benedicta was one of ten children of John and Cecilia Boland. When she came to Guthrie, Okla., in 1940, to attend the first vows of Sister Cabrini, her sister, the prioress suggested that Benedicta finish high school with the Benedictines in Guthrie. She did, entering the monastery in 1942, several months before graduation. She was soon asked to accompany community prayers on the organ. She taught in parish and community schools and also served as liturgical minister. After receiving her graduate degree in liturgical studies at The Catholic University of America, she was director of the Tulsa Office of Liturgy from 1978-83. As part of Red Plains Monastery in Oklahoma, she served on its monastic council, and in its formation and oblate programs. In 1983, her focus became spiritual direction, retreats and training others in ministry. When the Red Plains Monastery closed in 2010, the sisters there joined the Benedictines in Atchison. She continued to direct the Retreat in Daily Life in Atchison for several years. She enjoyed music, reading and working outdoors and continued to contribute to the liturgy and music of the monastery until her death.

Sister Benedicta was preceded in death by her parents and by her brother, Father Aloysius Boland, and sisters, Anna Boland, Cecilia Boland, Frances Buchheit, Rose Marie Nealon, and Sister Cabrini Boland, OSB. She is survived by her brothers John, Sylvester and Richard, nieces, nephews, and her monastic family. Arensberg Pruett Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. She managed the Corner Pocket Lounge. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, trips to the casino, being with friends, but she was the happiest spending time with her grandchildren. Raea was preceded in death by her father, Albert “Spud” Wallace, mother, Joyce Embrey, two brothers, Daniel Embrey, and Roy “Butch” Embrey. Survivors include her four children: Jeremy McDowell, Crissy Murphy, Amanda McDowell all of St. Joseph, and Steven McDowell of Gladstone, MO, eleven grandchildren, Dylan, Talan, Austin, Chase, Joseph, Isaac, Aydan, Joslin, Robert, Owen, Griffan and one great grand child, Trace, two sisters, Joy (David) Boller, and Teresa (James) Crossfield, three brothers, Russell Wallace, Daryl Wallace, and Bryan Wallace.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm on Thursday September 29, 2016 with a memorial service to follow at 7:00 pm at the Rupp Funeral Home. Howard R. Gentry

unnamedHoward R. Gentry, 79, of Lenexa, died Sunday, September 25, 2016 at the Brookdale Nursing Home in Shawnee, KS.
He was born March 12, 1937 at Clayton, OK, the son of Bill and Elsie Carter Gentry. He graduated from Corona High School in Corona, CA in 1955 and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from Pepperdine University in California.
Howard joined the U.S. Air Force in 1955 and served through 1965. He was an In-flight Refueling Specialist, or Boomer. He later worked as a Safety Engineer for AETNA and Home Life Insurance companies.
He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Lenexa, Dwight Cowles American Legion Post in Overland Park, Disabled American Veterans and the Vietnam Veterans Association.
Howard married Carol Bonjour in October of 1956. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include three sons, Ed and his wife, Cindy, Larry and his wife, Darcie, and Donald and his wife, Michelle; eight grandchildren, Amanda, Chad, Brock, Pam, Michael, Donald, Jacob and Elisa, and six great-grandchildren, Damien, Irena, Charlotte, Cale, Dalton and Beau.
Cremation is planned. Graveside services with military honors will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 1st at the Onaga Cemetery. Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Jeffers entered the U.S. Army in 1942 serving in the Army Engineers.
He married Colleen Granger in 1951. They celebrated 65 years of marriage this June.
He worked 44 years at Westab/Mead Products retiring in 1989 as Superintendent.
Wilbur enjoyed farming, fishing, and playing cards.
Mr. Jeffers was a member of Moila Shrine, St. Joseph Lodge #78, 32nd degree K.C.C.H Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of Patee Park Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Leslie Jeffers and Thelma Jeffers; sister, Betty Crouch; and nephew, John Crouch.
Survivors include his wife, Colleen Jeffers; son, Gregory Jeffers (Sue); daughter, Sandra Cox (Richard);nephew, Neal Crouch (Bonnie); one niece, Patricia Crouch; six grandchildren, Ashley Miller (Brad), Aaron Bartram (Wally), April Jeffers, Eric Cox (Justina), Kenny Cox (Jennifer) and Khris Cox (Jesskah); 12 great grandchildren; two great nieces; and one great nephew.

He was born October 6, 1932 in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Jack married Patrine J. “Pat” Beahler on March 23, 1953 at St. Patrick’s Rectory.
Jack proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He often claimed that he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Human Relations with the United States Marine Corps in South Korea.
He worked at St. Joseph Light & Power for 43 years until retiring in 1994.
Jack enjoyed deer, duck and quail hunting. He also was a great story teller and loved to fish and bowl and was an avid flower gardener. Jack was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Pony Express Post #359 and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia “Patty” Robbins; parents, Joseph and LaVada (Leffer) Kennedy; one sister, Delores McClain; and four brothers, William, Larry, Joe and Eddie Kennedy.
Survivors include wife of 63 years, Patrine; two sons, Timothy Kennedy and his wife, Loretta of Kimberling City, Missouri and John Kennedy and his wife, Linda of St. Joseph, Missouri; eight grandchildren, Sean Kennedy, Ryan Kennedy, Blaine Kennedy, Dr. Stephen Welch, Kristina Kennedy, Megan Kennedy, Dr. Devin Kennedy and Andrew Kennedy; sixteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was born February 20, 1929 in Holt County, Missouri and spent most of his time farming until joining the United States Army in 1951. He was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the 24th Infantry Divison.
Marion married Mary Edith Fleck on October 22, 1953 in Kansas City, Missouri. They moved to Omaha, Nebraska where they both worked at Tip Top Products and returned to St. Joseph, Missouri in 1959. Marion worked in the floor covering business for 35 years and was a co-founder of Heckman Carpet Sales, retiring in 1994.
He loved the Lord and placed a high value on spending time with his family. He also enjoyed camping and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Heckman; parents, Ananias and Stella (DeWeese) Heckman; and siblings, Lloyd Eugene Heckman, Leola Katherine Lightle and Ray Laverne Heckman.
Survivors include son, Lem Daniels (Jean), Gladstone, Missouri; granddaughters, Jennifer Anderson (Drew) and Kelly Kurz (Ross); great-grandchildren, Taylor, Brady, and Brandon; and siblings, Beulah Mae Ferguson, JoAnne Hadorn, Frances Marie Maxwell, Henry Howard Heckman, Wilbert Wayne Heckman and Gerald Dean Heckman.

Visitation with the family will be Sunday, September 25th from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Dorothy was born November 3, 1933, in St. Joseph, Missouri, the daughter of Glenn and Margaret Hagele Dunford. She attended school in St. Joseph, graduating from Benton High School in 1952.
She and Francis Neumann were united in marriage on May 11, 1957 at St. James Church, St. Joseph, Missouri. Mr. Neumann preceded her in death on June 18, 2007.
Dorothy was an LPN for six years before electing to stay home and raise her family. She enjoyed reading, collecting stamps and was an avid autograph collector.
Survivors include three sons, Patrick Neumann, Troy, KS, Paul Neumann, Wathena, KS, Anthony Neumann, Wathena, KS, two granddaughters, DaLonna Duncan, Angela Kay Neumann and three great grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Donald Ray Lucas

Donald Ray Lucas, 82, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Friday, September 23, 2016 at Mosaic Life Care Hospital. He was born October 1, 1933 in St. Joseph, Missouri, son of the late Helen & Harlan Lucas. He worked at Consolidated Freightways as a Truck Driver, and served in the United States Air Force. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Jack, Harlan, Chester and Jerry Lucas, and a sister Betty Gresham. He is survived by wife, Vera Lucas of Saint Joseph, MO, three daughters, Mary Turyan of Saint Joseph, MO, Maureen (John) Morley of Tijeras, NM, and Linda (Mark) Williams of St. Joseph, MO, 6 grandchildren, Rachel, Rebecca, John, Jacob, Elizabeth, and Kelsey, great grandchildren, Kirsten, Katelynn, and Kayla, a brother, Danny Lucas of Pueblo, CO, and a sister, Beverly Gamble of Memphis, TN. Anna married Leon Henderson on November 27, 1952.
She was a graduate of Faucett High School Class of 1951.
Mrs. Henderson was a Cosmetologist for 20 years and owned the Beauty Salon in the Robidoux Hotel. She was president of the Eugene Field Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association, officer of the St. Joseph Chapter of Cosmetologists, Vice-President of Westward Ho-Questers and a member of the Wreckettes and Moila Shrine.
Anna also volunteered at the St. Joseph Convention & Visitors bureau. She loved to travel and went on numerous trips with the ambassadors of Nodaway Valley Bank.
She was an active member of First Lutheran Church, where she was involved with the Altar Guild and was the Circles, Flower Chairperson and funeral dinner coordinator for many years.
Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Leon; parents, Samuel and Dorothy (Grable) Wolfe; two children, Kim Hornsby and Scott Henderson; and sister, Martha Gomel.

She was born June 21, 1952, to John and Agnes (Kennedy) Tiley in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.
Sharon graduated from Central High School in St. Joseph, Missouri. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri, where she was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Fraternity, Epsilon Alpha Chapter, and later an MBA from Avila University.
She started her accomplished career in journalism and later worked many years as a manager in communications. Her career included positions at American Business Women’s Association, Allied Signal, Aquila and KCP&L, from which she retired.
Ms. Tiley was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Leawood Chapter and the International Association of Business Communicators.
Sharon loved to paint with oil and watercolors, but her true passion was metalsmithing where she took her inspiration from within herself and nature making jewelry and boxes. Her interest in jewelry and metalsmithing started when she was a little girl and was inspired by projects her mother did in college. She was also was an avid traveler both nationally and internationally including all 50 U.S. states, five Canadian provinces, England, France, Germany, Scotland, Italy and many more. She also ventured into some sports including golf.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Tiley, and brother, Warren Tiley.
Survivors include her mother, Agnes Tiley, and numerous close friends and colleagues.

Ronald E. “Gene” Scheid

unnamed (99)Hiawatha, KS Ronald E. “Gene” Scheid, 84, of Hiawatha, died Monday evening, September 19, 2016, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha where he had been a resident since December 2015.
Gene was born October 7, 1931, in Netawaka, Kansas, the youngest of two sons of the late Alfred and Lillie Dean Chiles Scheid.
Gene attended the Lawn Ridge and Whiting grade schools prior to graduating from Whiting High School in 1949. He was a US Navy veteran of the Korean War. Gene served aboard the U.S.S. Binkley Bass in the Pacific Fleet, from June 1952 through November 1955. After leaving the Navy, he attended several annual Navy reunions and enjoyed the camaraderie of his former shipmates.
Upon release from the military, Gene began working for Nabisco Brands, Inc., in the operations management department, in Topeka, Kansas; the company later relocated him to St. Louis. Gene was with Nabisco for nearly 28 years.
Gene Scheid came to Hiawatha, Kansas in September of 1983, and worked at the Casselman Meek Funeral Home for several years. He later served as a deputy treasurer for Brown County before retiring in February of 1987. Gene was a member of the Bethany United Church of Christ in Hiawatha; and a member of VFW Post No. 5210, also of Hiawatha.
He married Beulah Grace Salsberry on April 27, 1957, in Whiting, Kansas. She preceded him in death June 26, 1980. Gene was also preceded in death by his daughter Marlene K. Burroughs, who died July 26, 1997; and a stepson Randel J. Colvin, who passed on October 19, 1988.
Gene married the late Ramona Leffert Brammer on November 20, 1982, in Hiawatha, Kansas. They were married for 21 years.
Gene is survived by a brother, Delbert J. Scheid, and his wife Agnes, of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; two grandchildren: Larry Fitzgerald, wife Jessica and great-grandchildren Aiden and Riley of Boynton Beach, Florida; his granddaughter Lisa M. Cole, husband Jason, and great-granddaughters Aubrey and Lila, reside in Seattle, WA. Gene is survived by one stepson Rod Colvin of Omaha, Nebraska. Gene also has nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
A Celebration of Gene’s life is planned for 1:30 p.m. Saturday, September 24, at the Bethany United Church of Christ in Hiawatha, with Pastor Shane Spangler officiating. Interment will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery, Whiting, KS. Military honors a courtesy of the Brown County Veterans Honor Guard.
Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, after 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Friday, and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the Church. The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services at the Church.

J.T. was born on May 21, 1925 and was a graduate of DeKalb High School. He married Betty (Barton) Downing on August 8, 1948. They had a long, loving marriage of 67 years. The couple lived in DeKalb where they raised their two daughters, Dona and Darla. J.T. was a hard-working, loyal employee. He worked as the Receiving Manager at Sears for 35 years before retiring in 1987. J.T. was a man who enjoyed meeting new people. His quick wit and warm personality helped him make friends everywhere he went. J.T. had a tender heart. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, mushroom hunting, and gardening. J.T. is survived by: daughter, Dona(Richard) McAndrews , of St. Joseph; daughter, Darla (Roger) Dusing of Liberty, Missouri; and five grandchildren, Justin McAndrews (Megan), of St. Joseph, Missouri, Megan (Allen) Bright of Liberty, Missouri, Ryan Dusing, of Gladstone, Missouri, Erin (Justin) Nissen, of Lincoln, Nebraska, Katie McAndrews, of Emporia, Kansas; and three great-grandchildren, Emma and Matthew Bright, and Kamdyn. unnamed (97)Dennis W. “Mac” McDaniel, 54, of Netawaka, died Thursday, September 15, 2016 at Medicalodges Jackson County in Holton.
He was born August 30, 1962 at Holton, the son of Robert and Susan Woodall McDaniel. He graduated from Wetmore High School in 1980.
Mac worked as a concrete finisher and later at the Wetmore school as a custodian.
He was a member of Kansas ABATE 11 and a past president of the Wetmore Men’s Club.
Survivors include his parents, Robert and Betty McDaniel, Stark City, MO; and Susan and Jerry Mencl, Holton; one brother, Jeff McDaniel and wife, Kathy, Tecumseh; one sister, Pam Hossfeld and husband, Perry, Powell, OH; two step-brothers, Rodney and Scott Nightingale; a step-sister, Janet Hinrichsen; his aunt, Linda Ireland, Topeka; other family members, many brothers and sisters of the road, and his chihuahua companion, Fred.
His smile and chuckle will remain in our minds and hearts forever. Giving more than he took.
Cremation is planned. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 28th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton. A Celebration of Life service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 29th at the funeral home. Inurnment will follow in the Wetmore Cemetery. Another Celebration of Mac’s life will be Saturday, October 1st at the old schoolhouse north of Whiting, starting at 4:00 p.m. For those attending the services, Harley Davidson attire is encouraged. Memorials are suggested to the Wetmore Men’s Club, Jackson County Friends of Hospice, or Kansas ABATE 11, and may be sent in care of Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, P. O. Box 1034, Holton, KS 66436.

Rolland Leon Mace
1934-2016

Rolland “Bill” Leon Mace, 82, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Thursday, September 15, 2016 in a Saint Joseph, MO hospital. He was born July 15, 1934 in St. Joseph, MO, son of the late Lorene and Homer Mace. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was the owner and operator of Bill’s Transmission Shop. He was a member of the VFW Post 6760. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Patricia Mace, and two brothers, Homer and Dennis Mace. Survivors include 5 children: Terri (Steve) Meade of Faucett, MO, Rolland “Rusty” Mace, Virginia (Darrell) Schildknecht of King City, MO, Jeff Mace of Kansas City, MO, and Kelly Mace, 3 step-children: Teresa McDowell, Jimmy Caldwell, and Joe Caldwell, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, and a brother, Gary Mace.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 10:00 Tuesday at the Rupp Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Monday at the Rupp Funeral Home. The interment with Military Honors will be at Mount Auburn Cemetery.

Rena H. Lanigan
1917-2016

Rena H. Lanigan passed away at Living Community in St. Joseph, Missouri at the age of 99 on Sunday, September 11, 2016.
She was born in Boston, Massachusetts on April 20, 1917, daughter of Ernest Lester Hayman and Helen Stuart Ramsey.
She became a Registered Nurse in Boston, Massachusetts. After earning her degree in nursing she joined the Army Nurse Corps in Boston, was made a 2nd lieutenant in World War II and was assigned to West Point military hospital in New York.
She married Lieutenant Robert E. Lanigan June 28, 1941 in Boston, Massachusetts and spent many years at wonderful postings all over the world.
Their family home was in Alexandria, Virginia, where they spent almost fifty years in between postings from afar.
Pediatrics became her favorite branch of nursing and she spent many years on the staff of prominent pediatricians in Alexandria, Virginia and Arlington, Virginia.
While awaiting the return of Col. Lanigan from the war, she became nursing administrator at Hamilton Hospital in New York.
After retirement they became members of the Chesapeake Yacht Club and spent many hours cruising the Chesapeake Bay in their “Irish Rover.” Col. Robert Lanigan died April 5, 2010 and is interred at Fort Leavenworth military cemetery where Rena Lanigan will be interred.
She is preceded in death by her parents; and son, Kevin S. Lanigan.
She is survived by Robert E. Lanigan, Jr., Dennis M. Lanigan and Linda L. Gregory and by seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He married Sharon Kunzler on February 22, 1959.
Robert worked at Seitz in St. Joseph, Missouri for 38 years until he retired. A loving father, brother, and grandpa that loved being with his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Kunzler; his parents; brothers, Donnie and Ed Kunzler; and sister, Marie Green.
Survivors include brothers, Gary Kunzler and Harold “Dee” Kunzler; son, Carl Kunzler (Jennifer), St. Joseph; daughters, Tina Gill (Charles), St. Joseph, Tammy Damager (Larry), St. Joseph, Debbie Kunzler, Kansas City, Missouri and Tracy Roberts (Scott), St. Joseph; son, Scott Kunzler (Michelle), Agency, Missouri; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Larry Hausman
1943-2016

Hausman, Larry. obitphotoE. Larry Hausman, 73, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at Mosaic Life Care surrounded by family.
He was born September 8, 1943 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Edward L. and Rose Mary (Shea) Hausman. Larry graduated from Central High School in 1961. He was active in the Missouri National Air Guard.
Larry married Sherry L. Means on July 6, 1968. They just celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary.
Larry served as President of Al J. Mueller Construction from 1989 until he retired in 2009. Prior to joining Mueller Construction, Larry spent more than 27 years with Hausman Metal Works and Roofing.
As a lifelong resident of St. Joseph, Larry felt a strong sense of duty to give back to his community. He served the United Way of Greater St. Joseph as a board member. Larry and Sherry co-chaired the Albrecht-Kemper Art Gallery’s Pot of Gold Fundraiser in 1997. In 2003-04 they were co-chairs of the Finance Campaign for Junior Achievement. He was President of the St. Joseph Construction Association in 1978 and again in 1996. Larry served on the board of the Chamber of Commerce from 1995 to 2001 and was Board Chairman in 1999. In 2002 he received the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s HOPE Award. For many years he served on the UMB Bank Advisory Board.
Larry was a member of the board of directors for the Pony Express Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He became a member of the tribe of Mic-O-Say in 1984 and was Chieftain from 2003-04. Larry was an original instructor of Project C.O.P.E., through the Pony Express Council, from 1980-87.
Socially Larry was active in the Booster Club of St. Joseph, as well as East Bank Investment Club and the Benton Club. He also served on the Country Club board and was president in 2002. Larry enjoyed time with his Tuesday dinner group and his lunch pals.
Larry was very devoted to his entire family. He loved spending time with them at their Lake Viking home. Larry and Sherry also travelled extensively visiting Germany, Ireland, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska, and many other destinations. In recent years, Larry and Sherry wintered in Florida with friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, John Christman.
Survivors include wife, Sherry (Means) Hausman; children, Brett L. Hausman (Aimee), Tyler R. Hausman (Jessica) and Julie Hausman Colgan (Brent), all of St. Joseph, Missouri; grandchildren, Claire, Caroline, William, Trey and Layla Hausman and Bailey and Paige Colgan; siblings, JoAnn Christman, St. Joseph, Bob Hausman (Janet), St. Joseph, Mary Agnes “Gertie” Workman (Zack), Cameron, Missouri and Jim Hausman, St. Joseph; sister-in-law, Janice Cobb, St. Joseph; uncle, LeRoy Hausman (Terry) Clarksdale, Missouri; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

James S. “Jess” Hatcher

He was born July 7, 1914 to Charles and Minnie (Settles) Hatcher in Carrolton, Missouri.
Jess married Mary Francis on September 27, 1936. She preceded him in death in 2008.
He worked as the manager of the A&P Food Store for ten years, bought and ran a potato chip factory, managed several grocery stores and later worked as a manager at Mr. B’s Hardware for nine years before retiring.
Mr. Hatcher was the oldest active member at Wyatt Park Baptist Church, where he was a Deacon and taught Sunday school. He also was a member of the Optimist Club and Masonic Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Mary Hatcher; parents; and six siblings.
Survivors include his daughters, Connie Boyer (Kermit), Lenexa, Kansas and Mary L. Hatcher, St, Joseph; grandchildren, Eric Boyer (Lisa) and Jason Boyer; great grandchildren, Mitchell, Kate, Jessica and Eva.

She worked at Whitaker Cable, Muny Inn, and Cordineers Place. She loved spending time with her grand kids, and she enjoyed watching TV, Bingo, drawing and art. She was a Pentecostal. Catherine was preceded in death by her husband, parents, son, Roy Johnson, Jr., daughter, Karen Johnson, brothers, Clifton, Claude, Jr., and Bob, sisters, Viola, Margaret, Ruth, Jackie, and Elizabeth. Survivors include her 9 children: Judy (Norman) Hardin, Savannah, MO, Connie Brushwood, St. Joseph, MO, Vickie (Tom) Heavilin, Savannah, MO, Virna Libby (David Weidmaier) St. Joseph, MO, Norman “Woody” Johnson, Savannah, MO, Steven (Julie) Johnson, Edward Johnson, Terry (Diana) Johnson, and Timothy Johnson, all of St. Joseph, MO, and over 100 grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
