Big 12 Conference restricts football live contact opportunities

riggertBig12Irving, Texas – The Big 12 has announced the adoption of a conference-wide limit on football in-season live contact opportunities to no more than two times per week, including game-day, per student-athlete. The limit will be in effect beginning with the upcoming 2015 season and will be included in the Big 12 Conference Policy for Concussion Diagnosis and Management.

“The Big 12 Conference continues to take the lead in the area of player safety as the first conference to enact more restrictive contact polices than currently permitted,” commented commissioner Bob Bowlsby. “Our policy is a 33-percent reduction in the number of contact opportunities allowed under NCAA guidelines. Limiting the number of live contact practices and giving medical practitioners unchallengeable authority on return to play decisions unequivocally demonstrates the commitment of our membership to the health and safety of Big 12 student-athletes. I applaud our athletics directors on implementing an industry leading approach.”

Current NCAA Year-Round Football Practice Contact Guidelines allow for two live contact practices a week.  The Big 12 policy limits a student-athlete to two contacts per week including competition, or two practices if a student-athlete does not participate in a game that week.

NCAA guidelines define live contact practice as “any practice that involves live tackling to the ground and/or full-speed blocking. Live contact practice may occur in full-pad or half-pad (also known as “shell,” in which the player wears shoulder pads and shorts, with or without thigh pads).”  Live contact doesn’t include:  (1) “thud” sessions, or (2) drills that involve “wrapping up;” in these scenarios players are not taken to the ground and contact is not aggressive in nature.  Live contact practices are to be conducted in a manner consistent with existing rules that prohibit targeting to the head or neck area with the helmet, forearm, elbow, or shoulder, or the initiation of contact with the helmet.” The Big 12 live contact policy applies to in-season practices and includes open dates.

Bowlsby also noted that the Big 12 had previously enacted policy beyond current NCAA Autonomy legislation empowering institutional medical staff with autonomy and the unchallengeable authority to determine management and return to play of any ill/injured student-athlete, and ensure that no coach serve as the primary supervisor for any medical provider, nor have hiring, retention and/or dismissal authority over that provider.

Three K-State football players named to Preseason All-Big 12 team

riggertKansasStateMANHATTAN, Kan. – Three Kansas State football players – safety Dante Barnett, fullback Glenn Gronkowski and offensive lineman Cody Whitehair – were each named to the Preseason All-Big 12 team as voted on by media representatives who cover the league, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Whitehair is a two-time member of the preseason all-conference team, while Barnett and Gronkowski are first-time recipients. All three earned All-Big 12 honors from the league’s coaches following the 2014 season as Gronkowski was a first-team member and Barnett and Whitehair were named to the second team.

A native of Abilene, Kansas, Whitehair is a three-time All-Big 12 offensive lineman after starting 38 of his 39 career games and helping K-State earn a 28-11 record with three bowl berths during that span. He is on the watch list for the Outland Trophy for a second-straight season.

Gronkowski has played in all 26 games over the past two seasons and has been a receiving threat out of the backfield in addition to being one of the top blocking backs in the country. The Amherst, New York, product has averaged 29.3 yards on 10 career receptions, while three of his four touchdowns have spanned 50 or more yards. Last season, he hauled in a 62-yard touchdown in K-State’s win at No. 11 Oklahoma.

Barnett, who is on the watch list for the 2015 Bednarik and Thorpe awards in addition to the Nagurski Trophy, is K-State’s top returning tackler after recording 77 stops in 2014. A product of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Barnett also recorded three interceptions and 11 total passes defended last season, including four against Texas en route to Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Kansas State’s Barnett on Thorpe Award watch list

riggertKansasStateMANHATTAN, Kan. – For the third time in the last week, Kansas State senior safety Dante Barnett has earned preseason honors by being named to the watch list for the 2015 Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s most outstanding defensive back, the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame announced Monday.

A product of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Barnett was named to the watch lists for the Bednarik Award and Nagurski Trophy last week, both of which honor the nation’s top defensive player. He is one of 42 players on this year’s Thorpe Award watch list and one of four from the Big 12 Conference, joining Karl Joesph (West Virginia), Kevin Peterson (Oklahoma State) and Zack Sanchez (Oklahoma).

Barnett joins other K-State greats that have been candidates for the award, including 2002 winner Terence Newman. Cornerback Nigel Malone was a semifinalist for the award in 2011 and 2012, while safety Ty Zimmerman was also a semifinalist in 2013.

After recording 77 tackles, four tackles for loss, three interceptions and 11 total passes defended as a junior in 2014, Barnett earned Second Team All-Big 12 honors from the league’s coaches in addition to picking up all-conference accolades from ESPN and Phil Steele.

Barnett totaled a season-high 12 tackles and career-best three TFLs against UTEP last season, while he had four passes defended against Texas en route to Big 12 Defensive Players of the Week.

The winner of the 2015 Jim Thorpe Award will be announced as part of The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 10, on ESPN.

K-State’s Snyder one of 23 coaches on Dodd Trophy watch list

riggertKansasStateMANHATTAN, Kan. — Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder was one of 23 coaches nationally and four from the Big 12 Conference to be named to the preseason watch list for the 2015 Dodd Trophy, officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl announced Friday.

The architect of the “greatest turnaround in the history of college football,” Snyder enters his 24th season at K-State and in December will be just the fourth person in the history of college football to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as an active coach.

A five-time national coach of the year honoree and seven-time conference coach of the year recipient, Snyder is the only two-time Dodd Trophy winner (1998, 2012) on the watch list and joins fellow Big 12 coaches Art Briles, Gary Patterson and Bob Stoops as candidates.

Snyder has compiled an amazing 187-94-1 record in his 23 years as the helm of the Wildcat program. He ranks 32nd all-time in victories among FBS coaches and continues to climb the ladder with each win.

The head coaches on the watch list represent programs with the highest ideals of leadership, scholarship and integrity on and off the field – the three pillars of legendary coach Bobby Dodd’s philosophy. Each of the coaches sits at the helm of programs with winning records, superior Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores and graduation rates, and a strong commitment to service within their communities.

Additional watch lists – adding to or narrowing the field – will be released throughout the fall, and the winner of the 2015 Dodd Trophy will be announced in Atlanta during Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl week. Starting in September, the Dodd Coach of the Week Award will also be presented weekly to the coach whose program embodies the award’s three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity, while also having success on the playing field during the previous week.

KSU’s Barnett, McDaniel & Whitehair earn preseason honors

riggertKansasStateMANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State seniors Dante Barnett, Danzel McDaniel and Cody Whitehair were named to watch lists for awards announced by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) on Friday. Barnett and McDaniel are on the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy – presented to the nation’s most outstanding defensive player – while Whitehair is on the watch list for the Outland Trophy as nation’s most outstanding interior lineman.

The inclusion of Barnett and McDaniel on the Nagurski Trophy watch list marks eight Wildcat candidates in the last five years to be up for the award. Both Barnett, who was named a candidate for the Bednarik Award on Tuesday, and McDaniel are first-time candidates.

Whitehair is a two-time candidate for the Outland Trophy as he was named to the preseason watch list in 2014, while the Wildcats have had candidates for the award five times in the last three seasons.

A product of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Barnett is one of 88 players on the 2015 Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list after a season in which he recorded 77 tackles, four tackles for loss, three interceptions and 11 total passes defended. He earned Second Team All-Big 12 honors from the league’s coaches in addition to picking up all-conference accolades from ESPN and Phil Steele.

McDaniel was a community-college transfer prior to the 2014 season and did not disappoint in his first season as he totaled 59 tackles, five tackles for loss, one sack and four passes defended. He came away with an interception-return touchdown in K-State’s win at No. 11 Oklahoma, while his lone sack of the year came at Iowa State on the Cyclones’ final drive to help preserve a four-point victory. For his efforts, he earned Second Team All-Big 12 honors from the league’s coaches.

Whitehair, a native of Abilene, Kansas, was one of 82 players on the 2015 Outland Trophy watch list. He has started 38 of his 39 career games, including all 13 games at left tackle in 2014 as he picked up All-Big 12 honors from the league’s coaches, Associated Press and Phil Steele.

Five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and six or seven semifinalists for the Outland Trophy will be announced on November 19, while three finalists for the Outland Trophy will be chosen five days later. The winner of each award will be announced on ESPN as part of The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 10.

Kansas State’s McCrane named to Groza Award watch list

riggertKansasStateMANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State sophomore place kicker Matthew McCrane was one of 30 players nationally named to the watch list for the 2015 Lou Groza Award as nation’s top place kicker, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced Thursday.

A native of Brownwood, Texas, McCrane is the ninth Wildcat to be a candidate for the award, including the third in the last four years, joining Anthony Cantele (2012 semifinalist) and Jack Cantele (2014 candidate). McCrane was also one of four Big 12 kickers on this year’s initial list, which included Ben Grogan (Oklahoma State), Josh Lambert (West Virginia) and Jaden Oberkrom (TCU).

Taking over primary place kicking duties in the fourth game of the 2014 season, McCrane went on to lead the nation by making 94.7-percent of his field-goal attempts (18-of-19) in addition to 41-of-42 extra-point attempts. He totaled 94 points on the year, shattering the K-State freshman record previously held by Martin Gramatica (56 in 1994), who went on to win the Lou Groza Award in 1997.

McCrane became the first freshman in school history to connect on a pair of 50-yard field goals, including a K-State freshman record 53-yarder against Oklahoma State. For his efforts in 2014, McCrane earned Honorable Mention All-America, Freshman All-America and All-Big 12 honors.

K-State’s Barnett on Bednarik Award watch list

riggertKansasStateMANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State senior safety Dante Barnett was one of 80 players nationally to be named to the watch list for the 2015 Bednarik Award as the College Defensive Player of the Year, the Maxwell Football Club announced Tuesday.

Coming off a season in which he tallied 77 tackles, four tackles for loss, three interceptions and 11 total passes defended, Barnett earned Second Team All-Big 12 honors from the league’s coaches in addition to earning all-conference accolades from ESPN and Phil Steele.

A 2015 team captain and the top active Wildcat with 176 career tackles, Barnett earned Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors following last year’s Texas game when he totaled seven stops and four passes defended. He also had a season-high 12 tackles, including a career-best three tackles for loss against UTEP, while he had three interceptions in a four-game stretch against Oklahoma State, West Virginia and Kansas.

Cornerback Chris Canty was one of three finalists in 1996, while linebacker Arthur Brown was a semifinalist in 2012. Other previous Wildcat candidates include cornerback Nigel Malone (2012), defensive back Ty Zimmerman (2013) and defensive end Ryan Mueller (2014).

Kansas State releases non-conference men’s basketball schedule

riggertKStateMANHATTAN, Kan. — Nine games at Bramlage Coliseum, the CBE Hall of Fame Classic at the Sprint Center and a return to INTRUST Bank Arena for the Wichita Wildcat Classic highlight the 2015-16 Kansas State men’s basketball non-conference schedule released on Thursday.

The non-conference slate could include as many as six teams that participated in the postseason a year ago, including three from the 2015 NCAA Tournament. Competition could come from as many as nine different conferences, including the Atlantic 10, ACC, Big Ten, Big Sky, Mountain West and SEC.

The 113th season of K-State men’s basketball begins Sunday, November 6 when the Wildcats host Division II foe Fort Hays State in an exhibition game. The season officially gets underway less than a week later on Friday, November 13 when the squad hosts Maryland-Eastern Shore in the first of two opening round games of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic.

“We felt with so many new players that we needed to get some home games under our belt early to develop some confidence in our team,” said head coach Bruce Weber. “Obviously, we have a nice challenge with the games in Kansas City at the CBE Hall of Fame Classic against a longtime rival in Missouri, a Big Ten team in Northwestern and a national championship contender in North Carolina. We then have a couple of road games to give us some experience in Georgia, who beat us at home last year, and Texas A&M, who has had two of the best recruiting classes in the country the past two seasons.

We finish it off with the game in Wichita against Colorado State, who has been one of the top teams in the Mountain West since Larry (Eustachy) took over, before the home games with Saint Louis and Ole Miss. The Saint Louis game starts a home-and-home series, which will give us the opportunity take D.J. (Johnson) next season. All in all, we feel like we have built a non-conference slate that works well with the make-up of our team.”

K-State previously announced several components of its non-conference schedule, including the CBE Hall of Fame Classic on Monday-Tuesday, November 23-24, the Wichita Wildcat Classic contest with Colorado State at INTRUST Bank Arena on Saturday, December 19 and the home game with Ole Miss in the Big 12-SEC Challenge presented by Sonic on Saturday, January 30.

In all, the Wildcats will play at least 18 home games in 2015-16, including the nine-game Big 12 slate with visits from NCAA Tournament teams Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and West Virginia. The complete Big 12 schedule, along with game times and television information, will be released at a later date.

“This type of schedule should be attractive to our fan base with a combined 21 games at Bramlage Coliseum, the Sprint Center and INTRUST Bank Arena,” said Weber. “I know that our fan base will again be out in full force to help our young team through a challenging series of games.”

The exhibition with Fort Hays State will be the first of four straight home games for the Wildcats, which also includes the opener with Maryland-Eastern Shore and tilts with Columbia on Monday, November 16 and South Dakota on Friday, November 20. There is a possibility of an additional exhibition game, which would be announced at a later date.

K-State will open the season on Friday, November 13 against a Maryland-Eastern Shore team, which won 18 games and advanced to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament a season ago. Columbia will be first Ivy League team to visit Bramlage Coliseum on November 16 and the first Ancient Eight opponent for the Wildcats since playing Pennsylvania in the 1975 NCAA Tournament. K-State is 9-0 all-time against South Dakota, which posted a winning record for the first time since 2010-11 under first-year head coach Craig Smith this past season.

The squad will make the short trek to Kansas City to compete in the championship round of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic on Monday-Tuesday, November 23-24 at the Sprint Center. The field includes five-time NCAA champion North Carolina, former Big 12 foe and current SEC member Missouri and the Big Ten’s Northwestern. The semifinals will be held on Monday with the finals taking place on Tuesday beginning with the consolation game, followed by the championship.

K-State has a long history with Missouri, playing 235 times between 1907 and 2012, including on 23 occasions in Kansas City. The Wildcats have also played North Carolina five times with the last meeting coming in 1989, while they have met Northwestern three times with the last match-up coming in 2002.

This will mark the Wildcats’ second trip to the CBE Hall of Fame Classic and first since going 1-1 in the 2010 event. K-State knocked off No. 18 Gonzaga, 81-64, in the semifinals before falling to No. 1 Duke, 82-68, in the championship.

Following the tournament, K-State finishes out the month of November with a first-ever match-up against South Carolina State on Sunday, November 29. The school is 25-0 all-time against teams from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

The Wildcats play their first true road game of the non-conference schedule on Friday, December 4 with a return trip to Georgia, which advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2014-15 with a 21-12 overall record. The Bulldogs won the first game of the home-and-home series last season on New Year’s Eve with a 50-46 victory at Bramlage Coliseum.

After a home game with Coppin State on Wednesday, December 9, the squad makes another trek to SEC country with a return game to Texas A&M on Saturday, December 12. The Wildcats have won three straight over the Aggies, including a 71-64 victory at the Sprint Center this past season. Texas A&M, which has one of the top incoming recruiting classes in the country, posted a 21-12 overall record and advanced to the second round of the NIT in 2014-15.

K-State will resume the Wichita Wildcat Classic basketball series on Saturday, December 19 against Mountain West foe Colorado State. The game will mark the third in Wichita in the last five years, following tilts with West Virginia in 2011 and Gonzaga in 2013. It will be the 13th meeting between the schools and the first at a neutral site. The Rams posted a 27-7 overall record during the 2014-15 season and was one of four No. 1 seeds in the NIT.

Following the trip to Wichita, the school finishes off the month of December with home games against North Dakota on Tuesday, December 22 and Saint Louis on Tuesday, December 29. This will be just the second meeting with North Dakota and the first since an 85-52 win on November 9, 2012 — the first of the Bruce Weber era at K-State. The Wildcats and Billikens will meet for the first time since 2004 in a highly-competitive series that dates back to 1929.

Season tickets for the 2015-16 season are now available, with a variety of pricing options including a 4-pack of general admission or bench season tickets for $900. The priority deadline to arrange payment, retain seats, or participate in new seat selection using athletic department priority points, for the upcoming season is Friday, July 17.  All upgrade and new full season-ticket requests will be assigned utilizing the K-State Priority Points system, which rewards fans for their history of season ticket purchases and contributions to the Ahearn Fund.

Kansas State continues to possess one of the top home atmospheres in the country as the Wildcats are one of 22 schools nationally to have played in front of an average of more than 12,000 fans for five consecutive seasons. The school has won more than 75 percent of its games in Bramlage Coliseum’s 27-year history, including a 127-23 (.847) record over the past nine seasons at home and a 69-5 (.932) mark in non-conference play.

The Wildcats will return seven lettermen, including four players with starting experience, in 2015-16 to go with the influx of six newcomers, including PARADE All-American Dean Wade (St. John, Kansas/St. John) and NJCAA First Team All-American Carlbe Ervin II (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma/Connors State College). Senior guard Justin Edwards (6.3 ppg., 3.3 rpg.) is the team’s top returner in both scoring and steals (37), while junior forward Wesley Iwundu (5.8 ppg., 3.5 rpg.) is the leading returner in rebounding (108), assists (61), blocks (20) and minutes (780).
