Missouri State’s Johnson drafted by Indiana in second round

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Missouri State University forward Alize Johnson (Sr., Williamsport, Pa.) was selected by the Indiana Pacers as the 20th pick of the second round of Thursday’s National Basketball Association draft here at Barclays Center.

Johnson was the 50th overall pick in Thursday’s draft and is the 12th MSU player in program history to be drafted by an NBA team.

The last Bear to be selected in the NBA Draft was Winston Garland who was the 40th overall pick (17th pick of the second round) by the Milwaukee Bucks in 1987.

As a senior, Johnson finished second in the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year voting and led the MVC in rebounding for the second straight season with 11.6 per game. He also led the Bears in scoring (15.0), rebounds and assists (94) with 20 double-doubles and was second nationally in defensive rebounds per game (8.48).

Johnson also ranked fifth nationally in total rebounds per game, sixth in total rebounds (384), eighth in double-doubles and 31st in offensive rebounds per game (3.15). Johnson finished 29th on MSU’s career scoring list — with 982 points in two seasons – and sixth on the club’s career rebounding chart (735).

After transferring from Frank Phillips College in Borger, Texas, Johnson ended his two-year tenure at Missouri State with 982 points and 735 rebounds in just 66 games, ranking 29th and sixth, respectively on the Bears’ all-time career lists in those two statistical categories with 37 double-doubles.

The 6-foot-9 forward was an All-MVC first-team selection in 2018 for the second straight season. He participated in the 2018 NBA Combine, May 16-20, in Chicago. Last summer, Johnson was an overnight sensation at the Adidas Nations event in Houston, ultimately earning most-valuable player honors there during the college showcase.

Missouri State earns NCAA Tournament berth in Oxford Regional

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – For the 11th time in program history, the Missouri State Bears have been selected to play in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship. The Bears drew the No. 3 seed in the Oxford (Miss.) Regional as part of the 64-team NCAA field that was announced Monday morning.

Making their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four seasons, the Missouri Valley Conference champion Bears (39-15) will face the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles (48-9) in opening-round action at 2 p.m. (CDT) Friday (June 1) at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. The top-seeded Ole Miss Rebels and fourth-seeded Saint Louis Billikens will meet Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. in the other regional pairing.

In their last Championship appearance in 2017, the Bears captured their third Regional title by going 3-1 at the Fayetteville (Ark.) Regional. MSU knocked off Oklahoma State in the opening round, before taking two of three games with host Arkansas to win the crown. The Bears then took on perennial power TCU in the Fort Worth Super Regional, falling in two games to the Horned Frogs.

Missouri State was one of two Missouri Valley Conference teams selected for the NCAA Tournament, marking the fourth time in the last seven seasons the league has earned multiple postseason bids. MVC Tournament and regular-season runner-up DBU drew the No. 3 seed in the Fayetteville Regional and will face Southern Miss as its opening-round opponent.

Regional play continues through Monday (June 4) with a double-elimination format. The 16 regional winners will advance to the Super Regional round, which will be contested June 8-11, with the eight winners of the three-game, head-to-head series moving on to the 2018 NCAA Division I Men’s College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha in Omaha, Neb., June 16-27.

No. 24 Mizzou wins at 19th-ranked Missouri State 8-6

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Mizzou freshman DH Chad McDaniel hit a go-ahead double in the top of the seventh inning as No. 24 Mizzou Baseball downed in-state foe No. 19 Missouri State, 8-6, Tuesday evening at Hammons Field. Mizzou ran out to a 5-1 lead before Missouri State rallied to go on top, 6-5, after six innings. Mizzou then scored three runs in the seventh, highlighted by McDaniel’s double, as it took the lead for good. Mizzou scored six of its eight runs with two outs, including all three in the seventh.

Mizzou improves to 24-9 on the year and snaps a four-game skid against the Bears in Springfield. Missouri State falls to 22-8. Reliever RHP Jordan Gubelman earned his first career win after tossing the final 3.1 innings as Mizzou regained the lead in the latter innings. He retired the first nine batters he faced before a two-out walk in the ninth. He struck out four and did not allow a hit. Jake Fromson took the loss, falling to 2-1 on the year. The win was the first for Mizzou this season when trailing after 6.0 innings. The Tigers were previously 0-8 in such contests.

McDaniel’s hit was certainly the turning point Tuesday, but the play of junior OF Zach Hanna was a huge part of the win. He went 2-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, a homer, was hit by a pitch to start the seventh-inning rally, and laid down a sacrifice bunt. He also made a game-saving catch in left, crashing into the wall to rob a pair of runs in the fifth inning.

TURNING POINT

Mizzou squandered a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning as Missouri State grabbed a 6-5 lead moving to the seventh inning. The first two Mizzou batters in the top of the seventh were retired, but a two-out hit-by-pitch by Hanna extended the inning. Alex Samples then singled to bring up McDaniel, who blooped an RBI double into left field for his second hit of the game. Missouri State LF Jordan Fitzpatrick let that ball get through his legs, allowing Samples to score the go-ahead run, putting Mizzou back on top, 7-6.

Freshman Cade Bormet kept the line moving with an RBI, pinch-hit double to extend the lead to 8-6. Gubelman then came out and retired Missouri State in order in the bottom of the frame as Mizzou grabbed momentum. He was lights out from there, holding the home Bears off the board for the final 3.1 innings, not allowing a hit.

QUOTING MIZZOU

Head Coach Steve Bieser

“Well it was a hard fought game. I like the way the team responded. We had some issues there in the middle innings, but we got off to a good start and we were able to finish the game. I’ve never questioned our club. They never quit – I’ve never seen that out of them ever. It was frustrating there in the middle parts when we weren’t scoring and the other team was scoring. They came back and we gave up the lead, but that is what good clubs do. They just keep going and they know if they keep doing the right things, good things will happen.”

TOP TIGERS

–          Junior OF Zach Hanna had three RBI in his first two at-bats, roping a two-run single in the first and a solo homer in the third inning. He finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. He has six RBI over his last five games and now has five multi-hit games on the season. His homer was his first since opening day at Florida International. He also made a catch in left, crashing into the wall to likely save two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

–          Junior lefty Tyler LaPlante made his fifth start of the season and went 3.0 innings, allowing just one run on two hits with four strikeouts.

–          Freshman DH Chad McDaniel tallied his fifth multi-hit game of the season and had the game-winning double in the seventh inning.

–          Senior C Brett Bond posted his 12th multi-hit game of the season Tuesday.

–          Junior RHP Jordan Gubelman earned his first Division I win after throwing 2.1 shutout innings, striking out three.

Missouri State fires men’s basketball coach Paul Lusk

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Missouri State University announced Saturday that Paul Lusk’s contract has been canceled, and he will not return as men’s basketball head coach. The announcement was made by President Clif Smart and Director of Athletics Kyle Moats during a news conference Saturday at JQH Arena.

“We evaluate all of our coaches at the conclusion of each season and monitor several criteria during the year,” said Moats. “Based on my review, I consulted with President Smart on Friday evening and gave him my recommendation that we make a change in the coaching leadership of our men’s basketball program. President Smart supported my recommendation. These decisions are never easy. However, we believe it is in the best long-term interest of our men’s basketball program.”

Smart noted the success of its athletics program has a direct impact on the overall reputation of Missouri State.

“A successful athletics program is an important part of a thriving university,” said Smart. “It helps create student spirit and community engagement, and is an important part of our student recruitment and retention efforts. It often leads to financial contributions to the university and is part of our marketing goals.”

Lusk will receive a $370,000 buyout from non-university funds for the remaining year of his contract.

Associate head coach Corey Gipson will oversee the day-to-day duties of the program until a new head coach has been named. Moats also noted that the team’s other assistant coaches, Matt Sligh and Keith Pickens, will remain employed by the university until a replacement coach is hired.

“Paul ran our program with integrity,” Moats stated. “Almost without exception, his student-athletes represented the university and the department in a positive fashion. He is a class individual who has always respected and appreciated the history and tradition of Bears Basketball.”

Moats stated that a national search will begin immediately to find Lusk’s replacement. Joining him on that search committee will be: Casey Hunt, MSU senior associate director of athletics; Rachael Dockery, MSU legal counsel; Ed Pinegar, community member; Joe Turner, community member; and Dr. James Satterfield, faculty member.

Lusk coached the Bears for seven seasons after taking the helm in April 2011. He compiled a 105-121 overall record in that span, including a 52-74 ledger in Missouri Valley Conference games. Missouri State advanced to the MVC Tournament semifinals twice — 2014 and 2017 — during Lusk’s tenure. His best season was the 2013-14 campaign when he led the Bears to a 20-13 overall record and a trip to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Bears posted winning records each of the last two seasons, including an 18-15 ledger this year.

“I want to thank the athletic department and leadership at Missouri State for the opportunity to coach the men’s basketball program,” said Lusk. “I will always cherish the relationships I’ve built here and the young men who have worked so hard for me and my staff. I wish the university tremendous success moving forward.”
