Missouri State falls on the road at Loyola (Chicago)

riggertMSUCHICAGO (AP) — Aundre Jackson scored 22 points, Milton Doyle had 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, and Loyola (Chicago) beat Missouri State 77-71 on Sunday.

Jackson made two free throws with 2:49 to go and, after Missouri State was whistled for a charge, Doyle made a pull-up jumper to cap a 10-0 run for a 67-60 lead.

Loyola hit 8 of 10 free-throw attempts in the final 1:04 to hold on.

Donte Ingram sank four 3-pointers and scored 17 points for Loyola (13-6, 3-3 Missouri Valley), which was 5 of 13 from distance. Doyle entered averaging 29 points, nine rebounds and 4.5 assist in his last two games and he has scored 10-plus in 20 straight games.

Loyola erased an 11-point halftime deficit to improve to 9-1 this season at Gentile Arena.

Alize Johnson had 20 points and 10 rebounds- his 10th double-double this season — for Missouri State (12-7, 3-3). Dequon Miller added 16 points and Chris Kendrix 15.

Missouri State holds off Evansville 55-51

riggertMSUSPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Dequon Miller converted three of four free throws in the final nine seconds to help Missouri State hold on to beat Evansville, 55-51 Wednesday night.

Jaylon Brown’s layup with 11 seconds left got Evansville within one, 52-51. After a Missouri State timeout Miller drew a foul from Dru Smith and converted both free throws with :09 left. Brown turned the ball over three seconds later and Miller again drew a foul from Smith, this time hitting the first of two from the line.

Jarrid Rhodes scored 14 points and Miller added another 13 to lead the Bears (12-6, 3-2 Missouri Valley).

Missouri State converted just one of every three shots from the field (19 of 57 for 33.3 percent), including 8 of 23 from long range.

Brown and Ryan Taylor each scored 19 points for the Purple Aces (10-8, 1-4). Evansville shot 21 of 50 (42 percent) from the field.

Missouri State falls at home to Southern Illinois

riggertMSUSPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Mike Rodriguez scored 22 points and Southern Illinois pulled away over the final 10 minutes for a 75-67 victory over Missouri State on Saturday for its third straight win.

Rodriguez hit 7 of 8 shots and all three of his 3-pointers. Thik Bol finished with 11 points and nine rebounds, while Sean O’Brien and Sean Lloyd each added 10 points for the Salukis (10-7, 3-1 Missouri Valley).

Missouri State (11-6, 2-2) outshot Southern Illinois 49-42 percent, but the Salukis hit two 3-pointers and held a 10-point advantage at the foul line (20-10).

A Jarred Dixon 3 for the Bears cut the Southern Illinois lead to 48-46 with 9:24 left. But the Salukis responded by scoring seven of the next nine to regain some breathing room. A Rodriguez layup with 1:42 left made it 68-56, and the Bears were finally put to rest.

Dixon and Dequon Miller each scored 15 points for Missouri State.

Missouri State loses in OT at Illinois State

riggertMSUNORMAL, Ill. (AP) — MiKyle McIntosh scored 21 points, Deontae Hawkins had 20, Paris Lee had a double-double and Illinois State edged Missouri State 74-71 in overtime on Wednesday night.

After Jarrid Rhodes’ 3-pointer gave Missouri State a 67-64 lead to open overtime scoring, Lee matched that for the Redbirds. The Bears then missed six straight shots. McIntosh scored five straight points before he missed three straight free throws and Lee two, keeping the lead at 72-67.

Jarred Dixon hit a jumper for Missouri State and after McIntosh made two from the line, Austin Ruder scored with 11 seconds left, making it 74-71. McIntosh then missed two more free throws but the Redbirds had two fouls to give, keeping the Bears from getting a shot until a desperation air ball as time ran out.

Lee had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Illinois State (11-4, 3-0 Missouri Valley). The Redbirds were 23 of 34 from the line, seven of the misses in overtime.

Rhodes had 19 points for the Bears (11-5, 2-1), who were 5 of 7 from the line but had 14 3-pointers on a school-record 38 attempts.

Missouri State rolls past Chicago State 66-46

riggertMSUSPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Dequon Miller scored 18 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, to lead Missouri State to a 66-46 win over Chicago State in Monday night’s campus round of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic.

Obediah Church added 12 points and Jarrid Rhodes collected 11 rebounds for Missouri State (8-3), which never trailed. Miller hit 6 of 14 from the field and went 3 for 5 from the line.

A 3-pointer from Rhodes just after the break gave Missouri State its largest lead, 44-26.

Chicago State chipped away and cut the deficit to 10 with a 6-0 burst midway through the second half to trail 52-42 with 8:51 left. Anthony Eaves, Trayvon Palmer and Joshua Batson each had buckets in the run but it was as close as the Cougars got.

Palmer finished with 13 points and Montana Byrd had 11 for Chicago State (3-9).

Missouri State holds off Southeast Missouri 71-66

riggertMSUSPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Ryan Kreklow scored 17 points Saturday night and Missouri State held off Southeast Missouri for a 71-66 win in the campus round of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic.

Ronnie Rousseau III added 15 points and Chris Kendrix had 12 for Missouri State (7-3). Alize Johnson, who had double-doubles in the three previous games, was held scoreless Saturday but hauled in 11 rebounds.

Missouri State pulled away with a 16-2 run in the first half to build a 30-14 lead with 5:22 left before intermission. The breakaway run included a pair of 3-pointers from Kreklow, and the Bears led the rest of the way.

Despite trailing by 20 in the second half, Southeast Missouri continued to chip away, cutting the deficit to 65-63 on a pair of free throws from Denzel Mahoney with 2:10 left but it was as close as it got.

Antonius Cleveland’s 23 points led three Southeast Missouri players in double figures.

Johnson powers Missouri State past Oral Roberts 86-76

riggertMSUSPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Alize Johnson scored 20 points and grabbed 16 rebounds while Jarred Dixon added another 15 points off the bench and Missouri State held off Oral Roberts late to take an 86-76 win Wednesday night.

Kris Martin, who finished with a career-high 35 points for Oral Roberts, converted a four-point play with 6:25 left to get the Golden Eagles (2-9) within one, 70-69. Ryan Kreklow responded with a jumper and Dixon hit back-to-back jumpers to push the Bears’ lead back to five points, 76-71.

Johnson grabbed 10 of his rebounds off the offensive glass and converted 9 of 18 from the field in leading Missouri State (6-3). Collectively the Bears were 33 of 74 from the field (44.6 percent), including 7 of 21 from distance.

Martin, whose previous high was 19 points against Oklahoma on Dec. 7, was 13 of 22 from the field, including 7 of 14 from behind the arc.

Missouri State gets road win at SEMO 79-71

riggertMSUCAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Missouri State (5-2) led wire to wire and got 18 points and 13 rebounds from junior Alize Johnson to lead the Bears to a 79-71 road win against in-state rival Southeast Missouri State (4-5) here Wednesday.

The Bears scored the first six points of the game, fired an impressive 51.9 percent from the field and converted 80 percent at the line in the win.

It was the 146th meeting between the schools in a series that dates back to 1911.

Dequon Miller added 17 points, Austin Ruder scored 16, and Jarrid Rhodes tallied 10 points in a starting role for Missouri State, which out-rebounded the Redhawks by a 42-29 margin.

Antonius Cleveland led Southeast with 20 points, while Denzel Mahoney dumped in 14 for the home side.

After leading by three at the break, Ryan Kreklow ignited an 8-0 run over a three-minute span to push the visitors ahead by nine. Kreklow’s trey from the left wing was followed by a transition jumper by Miller, a dunk by Rhodes and a free throw by Jarred Dixon to make it 41-32 with just under 15 minutes to play.

SEMO used a 7-3 run to crawl back within 44-39 before the under-12 media timeout, but MSU responded with a layup by Chris Kendrix, a triple by Ruder and a stick-back by Jordan Martin to end the home team’s threat.

With 6:14 to play, Ruder knocked down a long 3-pointer from the right side to give the Bears a double-figure advantage, 60-48, which Missouri State parlayed into three different 14-point leads down the stretch.

The Redhawks dropped in three treys in the final three minutes to keep things respectable, but MSU was 9-for-12 at the foul line in that same span to put it on ice.

In the first half, the Bears parlayed the fast start into an 11-point advantage just nine minutes into the game. Ruder started a 10-0 run for the Bears with a corner trey and added a three-shot free throw opportunity to the stretch to make it 16-5 at the 11:13 mark.

Later in the half, the Redhawks turned up the intensity on the defensive end and held MSU to just two field goals over the last five-and-a-half minutes. Southeast got as close as 27-25 before going into the locker room down 29-26.

The Bears finished the game 27-of-52 from the field, 5-of-14 (.357) from bonus distance and 20-of-25 at the stripe with 42 rebounds – 12 offensive – and 25 bench points.

Southeast made 24-of-62 (.387) shots overall, 8-of-26 (.308) from long range and 15-of-23 (.652) at the stripe with 29 rebounds and 9 steals.

MSU was without starters Obediah Church and Ronnie Rousseau III who were nursing minor injuries.

The Bears return to action Saturday for a “Black Out” game against Valparaiso (7-2) at 7 p.m.

Missouri State handles North Dakota State 64-50

riggertMSUSPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Alize Johnson scored 17 points and hauled in 10 rebounds to lead Missouri State to a 64-50 win over North Dakota State on Sunday.

Dequon Miller added 12 points and Ronnie Rousseau III had 10 for Missouri State (4-1). The Bears sealed it at the free throw line, getting 13 of 18 to North Dakota State’s season-low 1 of 4.

Missouri State took control with a 15-0 run that made it 17-4 with 12:25 still to go before intermission. Johnson got two layups and a 3-pointer to ignite the run.

In the second half, NDSU (5-2) pulled to within 10 when Paul Miller’s jumper made it 50-40 with 11:14 left. But the Bears got a 3-pointer from Jarred Dixon at the other end and continued to protect the double-digit advantage the rest of the way.

The Bison got 19 points from Khy Kabellis and Miller finished with nine.

Missouri State loses on a buzzer-beater at DePaul

riggertMSUROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — Billy Garrett Jr. beat the buzzer with a 15-foot pull-up jumper in the lane to give DePaul a 68-66 win over Missouri State on Wednesday night.

Garrett scored 21 of his 23 points in the second half and led the late charge with 15 coming in the final 7:15. The Blue Demons (3-1) took their first lead at 66-64 on Garrett’s 3-point play with 48.3 seconds left.

Missouri State (3-1) tied it with 18.1 seconds left on a pair of free throws by Chris Kendrix.

Eli Cain added 22 points and Tre’Darius McCallum 10 for DePaul.

Kendrix had 15 points, Ronnie Rousseau III scored 14 and Dequon Miller 12 for Missouri State. The Bears opened the game with a 9-2 run, led 31-22 at halftime, were up by as many as 13 in the second half and had a 10-point lead with 6:02 left.
