Missouri Western softball wins two games against Southwest Baptist

MWSUMissouri Western evened its conference up record at the hands of Southwest Baptist as the Griffons defeated the Bearcats 5-0 in the first game and won the second 8-0 in five innings.

Jackie Bishop picked up the win in the first game and Janie Smith recorded her first shutout of her career in game two. The Griffons are 14-8 and 2-2 in the conference.

In the first game the Griffons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Maegan Roemmich hit a single to center field bringing in two runs shortly after a wild pitch helped score Bre Fleschner.

The Griffons continued to score runs as they put in two in the second inning to stretch their lead to 5-0. No runs were scored the rest of the way and Missouri Western won 5-0.

Fleschner finished 2-for-2 with two RBI. Roemmich also had two hits with two RBI.

Missouri Western 8, Southwest Baptist 0

The Griffons used another shutout performance from their pitcher to win the second game of the doubleheader 8-0.

Michelle Stevenson added two triples to help the Griffons. Keri Lorbert blasted a homer to score two runs after Stevenson went home off of a bunt from Roemmich.

In the third inning, Taylor Anding belted a solo home run to cap a 5-run inning and stretched Missouri Western’s lead to 8-0. The Griffons controlled the game the rest of the way to pick up the sweep.

Stevenson went 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI. As a team, the Griffons had eight hits and seven RBI in the victory.

Griffons sweep Northeastern for 13th straight wins; Simmons breaks record

MWSUBrandon Simmons made history in game one winning his career record 28th game while in game two the Missouri Western baseball team scored four late runs completing the comback giving them the doubleheader sweep over Northeastern State (15-2 and 6-5). The Griffons improve to 14-3 overall and 9-0 in MIAA play. Simmons broke Nick Finn’s record of 27 career wins which was set during the 1972-75 seasons.

In game one senior pitcher Brandon Simmons set the record for most wins in a career (28) pitching a complete game victory against the RiverHawks. Simmons improves to 4-0 on the season scatterting 10 hits while striking out five.

The Griffons jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first when Kyle Simpson hit his third homer of the season. The RiverHawks cut the Griffon lead to 3-2 scoring a run in the second and third but the rest would be all Griffons.

MWSU scored 12 combinded runs in the next three innings. In the third the Griffons had six hits while scoring six runs. Jake Schrader hit a big two RBI double in the inning helping Missouri Western to the 9-2 lead after three.

In the fourth the Griffons got four more hits and four more runs. Three of the runs came on Grant Fink’s 7th homer of the season. In the fifth Nate Ramler tripled in Simpson and then Simpson scored on a sac fly by Fink giving MWSU the 15-2 lead.

The Griffons finished with 18 hits in the contest. Kyle Simpson went 4-for-5 with four RBI and four runs scored. Schulze went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

The RiverHawks had 10 hits with Chad Davidson and Kyle Singleton both getting two. Craig George falls to 3-2 going three innings giving up 10 hits and nine earned runs.

In game two the Griffons played from behind the entire game until Simpson knocked in Schulze in the bottom of the eighth inning giving MWSU the 6-5 lead. The Griffons had to score three in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score at five.

Nate Ramler had the game tying single which also scored Schulze.

The RiverHawks got on the board in the second inning when Tyler Wilkins doubled and scored. The Griffons tied it a two in their half of the second when Jimmy Smelcer reached on a throwing error and scored on a Jake Schrader single to right center.

NSU went up 3-1 in the fourth on four hits and later took a 5-2 lead after six and a half.

In the seventh the Griffons got three runs on three hits. Shawn Egge doubled to left center and scored on a Schulze single. Schrader walked to lead off the inning and Dylan Koch pinch ran and scored on a passed ball. Ramler then would single in Schulze tying the score.

Logan Hollingsworth came in for the Griffons going three innings giving zero hits with one strikeout. He got the winning improving to 3-0 on the season. Ethan Ward pitched six innings scattering 10 hits while giving up five earned runs and striking out five.

Offensively the Griffns had eight hits with Schulze and Egge both getting two.

The RiverHawks had 10 hits with Kegan Knight, Cody Robinson and Ryan Staggs all getting two hits. Frank Sprick falls to 2-1 on the season pitching 1.1 innings giving up three hits and one earned run. Northeastern State falls to 11-9 overall and 11-9 in MIAA play.

The two teams play the final game of the three game series on Saturday, March 16 with game time set for 1:00 pm in St. Joseph, Mo.

Western softball loses two games to Central Missouri

MWSUThe Missouri Western softball tam dropped a double header to Central Missouri Friday night, losing game one 3-1 before losing game two 2-0. The loss drops the Griffons to 12-8 overall and 0-2 in the MIAA.

Game 1

Central Missouri 3, Missouri Western 1

The day started off nicely for the Griffons as center fielder Maegan Roemmich hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. The round tripper ended a 0-0 game and put Missouri Western ahead 1-0. Two innings later, however, the Jennies notched things a one apiece.

In the seventh inning, Central jumped ahead, scoring two runs and took a 3-1 lead. The Griffons couldn’t come from behind and lost the game 3-1.

Junior Jackie Bishop took the loss and fell to 6-3 on the year.

Game 2

Central Missouri 2, Missouri Western 0

The Griffons could collect a split on the day, as they fell in game two 2-0.

Neither team scored in the first four innings, but the Jennies broke a tie in the fifth and took a 1-0 lead. Central Missouri added another run in the sixth inning, and Missouri Western couldn’t find enough bats to come back, as it fell 2-0. Janie Smith picked up the loss and fell to 6-3 on the season.

On the day, Roemmich went 3-for-6 with one RBI. Tiffany Gillaspy also has multiple hits, going 2-for-6. The Griffons return to action tomorrow afternoon, as they host Southwest Baptist.

Griffons scored 38 runs in doubleheader sweep of Washburn

riggertMissouriWesternThe Missouri Western baseball team continued the offensive onslaught as they defeated the Washburn Ichabods 23-13 and 15-9 in an MIAA doubleheader Thursday afternoon. The Griffons have won 11 games in-a-row as they improve to 12-3 overall and 7-0 in MIAA play.

GAME 1
MWSU 23, WU 13

In game one the Griffons scored in every inning which included jumpring out to a 10-1 lead after two and a half innings of play. In the first inning the Griffons scored six runs on six hits and two Ichabod errors. In the second Grant Fink hit his sixth homer of the season giving MWSU the 8-0 lead after two.

Washburn got on the board in the second Conner Crimmins up the middle scoring Richard Swan. In the third the Griffons got the bats going again scoring on a walk and a fielder choice going up 10-1. The Ichabods did not get flustered scoring three runs in the third and five in the fourth cutting the Griffon lead to 11-9 after four innings of play. Shawn Egge hit a homer in the top of the fourth giving them their 11th run.

The Griffons answered right back in their half of the fifth scoring eight runs on five hits with Bubba Dotson smacking a grand slam giving MWSU the 19-9 lead after five. Each team scored four runs the rest of the way with the Griffons winning 23-13.

The Griffons had 21 hits with nine being for extra bases. Dotson went 3-for-4 with four RBI and four runs scored while Spencer Shockley went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBI. Fink had five RBI for the Griffons.

On the mound Jake Jones went three innings giving up seven hits and five earned runs. Mark Spreckles picked up the win going 2.2 innings giving up four hits and two earned runs. He improves to 1-1 on the season.

The Ichabods had 13 hits with Brad Albers going 3-for-4 with three RBI and one runs scored. Dan Gabler picked up the loss going 1.2 innings giving up eight hits and five earned runs. He falls to 0-2 with the loss.

The 23 runs was the most since March 10, 2007 when the Griffons scored 23 against Arkansas Tech.

GAME 2
MWSU 15, WU 9

In game two the Griffons broke things open in the top of the first scoring nine runs on nine hits. Dotson capped off the scoring  hitting his second grand slam of the day giving MWSU the 9-0 lead after a half an inning.

Once again the Ichabods were able to chip away at the Griffon lead scoring four runs in the third and two in the fourth cutting the MWSU lead to 9-6. The Griffons remained calm and in the fifth Jimmy Smelcer led off with a homer and then Payton Scarbrough scored on a Schulze single giving MWSU the 11-6 lead.

In the seventh the Griffons scored three more runs which was capped by a Simpson two RBI double giving Missouri Western the 14-6 lead after six and a half. The Ichabods answered in their half of the seventh with three runs but it was to little to late as Schulze hit a homer in the ninth giving MWSU the 15-9 victory.

The Griffons had 20 hits with Ramler going 4-for-6 with one run scored while Schulze, Simpson, Smelcer and Scarbrough each had three hits. Oliver Kadey and Mason Queen each went 3.1 inning for MWSU while Logan Hollingsworth went 2.1 innings giving up one hit and striking out three. He improves to 2-1 on the season.

Washburn falls to 3-9 overall and 3-9 in MIAA play. They had 13 hits with Dakota Kell going 3-for-5 with three RBI and one run scored. Ryne Dowling went just 2/3 of an inning giving up nine hits and nine earned runs. He falls to 0-2 on the season.

The Griffons return to action on Friday, March 15 with an MIAA doubleheader against Northeastern State in St. Joseph, Mo. Game time is set for 4:00 pm from the MWSU BB Field at the Spring Sports Complex.

MWSU’s Dotson named NCBWA Central Region Hitter of the Week

MWSUMissouri Western senior outfielder Bubba Dotson has earned the National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association Central Region Hitter of the Week for his performance last week helping the Griffons to a 5-0 record.

Dotson has been on a roll as of late getting a hit in each of his last eight games. In the past week he helped the Griffons go 5-0 hitting .706 with 12 hits in 17 at bats. Dotson scored six runs, had four doubles and eight RBI. He also had a slugging percentage of .941 and an on base percentage of .783 for week. Dotson walked six times and struck out just twice while adding one sacrifice and going 2-for-2 in stolen bases.

On the season, Dotson is hitting .535 (23-43) with 14 runs scored and 13 RBI. The 5-11 senior outfielder is a native of Kansas City where he played at Oak Park High School prior to playing at both Neosho County Community College and Maple Woods.

Dotson is the second Griffon to earn this honor as Kyle Simpson received this award earlier in the season.

Griffon baseball series with NSU moves to Friday, Saturday

MWSUThe Missouri Western baseball team has moved its weekend series with the Northeastern State University RiverHawks up to Friday  and Saturday.

On Friday the two teams will play a doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for 4:00 pm and on Saturday they will wrap up the three game series with a single nine inning game starting at 1:00 pm.

The final game of the series will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ and 680KFEQ.com.

Missouri Western blanks William Jewell for ninth straight win

MWSUThe Missouri Western baseball team opened up the 2013 home portion of their schedule with a 11-0 run rule victory over non-conference opponent William Jewell College. The Griffons had 17 hits with Michael Schulze leading the way going 4-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBI. The Griffons run their win streak to nine improving to 9-3 overall.

The Griffons struck early and often scoring eight runs in the first two innings which included a seven run second inning. The Griffon first started with three straight singles and then Nate Ramler hit a sacrifice fly scoring Schulze giving MWSU the 1-0 lead after one.

In the second the Griffon scored seven runs on eight hits taking a 8-0 lead after two. Grant Fink hit his 5th homer of the year leading off the inning and then Schulze hit a three run homer which was his second of the year.

The Griffons scored one run in the third, fifth and sixth innings putting the run rule in effect. In the third Schulze doubled and scored on a Bubba Dotson double. In the fifth Schulze hit a double and scored on a Dotson sacrifice fly and in the sixth Spencer Shockley singled in Ramler giving MWSU the 11-0 lead.

Kyle Kelly picked up his first victory of his career going five innings giving up six hits while striking out four. Jerad Hawkins and Ramler each pitched an inning with neither one giving up a hit.

Offensively all nine of the Griffon starters got hits. Dotson and Fink had three hits apiece while Ramler had two. Dotson and Fink had two RBI while Ramler scored two runs.

The Cardinals fall to 3-4 as David Collins falls to 0-3 going one inning giving up seven hits and five earned runs. Six different Cardinals got hits in the game.

The Griffons return to action tomorrow, March 14 with an MIAA doubleheader against the Washburn Ichabods in Topeka, Kan. Game time is set for 2:00 pm.

Griffon women win Central Missouri Invite; Bird finishes second

MWSUThe Missouri Western women’s golf team out shot day one leader Northwest Missouri State by three strokes in the final 18 holes claiming a one stroke victory at the Central Missouri Invitational. The Griffons shot a two round total of 736 (368-368) while Northwest Missouri State finished with a 737 (366-371).

Fort Hays State and Central Missouri finished in third and four with 778 and 790 respectively while Southwest Baptist finished with a 935.

Senior Natalie Bird finished in second place firing a two round total of 172 (82-90) while Callie Wilson finished in third with a 181 (91-90). Anna Kloeppel and Darcy Smith finished in a tie for 4th and 10th respectively firing 186 and 193. Amber Chivington, Casi Webb and Shelby Stone finished firing 198, 200 and 202 respectively.

The winner of the event was Steph Charteris shooting a two day total of 166 (89-77).

The Griffons return to action on Sunday, March 24 and Monday, March 25 when they host the MWSU Candlewood Suites Classic. The event will take place at the St. Joseph Country Club.

Ward picked up his first victory of the season pitching a masterful game in a 11-1 victory over Nebraska-Kearney. Ward went five innings giving up just two hits while striking out five. He only allowed his opponents to hit .118 off him on the day as he retired the final four batters he faced and did not allow a baserunner past first base in his entire appearance. The 5-10 senior pitcher is a native of Olathe, Kan. where he attended Olathe East High School prior to pitching for Highland Community College.

MWSU men’s golf team finishes 10th at Arkansas Tech

riggertMissouriWesternThe Missouri Western men’s golf team finishing in 10th place firing a two day total of 632 (319-313) at the Dave Falconer Memorial Invitational hosted by Arkansas Tech.

The winner of the event was Midwestern State University with a 594 (303-291) eight strokes ahead of second place finisher Henderson State University, 602 (304-298).

Individually the Griffons were led by James O’Brien with a 154 (79-75) placing him in a tie for 17th. Wes Apple finished in a tied for 34th with a 158 (82-76) while Evan McCarthy, Tyler Gast and Scott Sheldon finished with 163, 165 and 170 respectively. Kenny Stone and Derek Hawkins played as individuals finishing with 164 and 176 respectively.

The winner of the event was Wouter MyBurgh of Southwestern Oklahoma State finishing with a two day total of 144 (74-70).

The Griffons will return to action on Saturday, March 23 and Sunday, March 24 when they participate in the University of Sioux Falls Spring Invite. The event will be played at Elmwood Golf Course.
