Corkhill leads Griffon past Pitt State in five sets

Freshman Shelby Corkill led the Griffons to a 3-2 (28-26, 22-25, 25-19, 25-27, 15-9) thrilling victory over the Pittsburg State Gorillas. Corkill finished with a career high 26 kills hitting .309 in the match. Her 26 kills are the most for a Griffon since Lindsay Fuller recorded 28 on September 10, 2003 at Central Missouri. Western improves to 11-11 overall and 4-5 in MIAA play.

The first two sets were very competitive with both teams wining one. Western took set one 28-26 hitting .240 with 18 kills. Corkill and Tahler Johnston each recorded six in the set. The Gorillas led all the way in set two hitting .209 with 12 kills with Brooke Fay collecting six in the set. The Gorillas evened the match up at one with the 25-22 victory.

After two sets the Griffons were hitting .200 with 36 kills. Corkill led the way with 15 while Stephanie Hattey recorded 30 set assists. Sarah Faubel had 15 digs with the Griffons recording 55. The Gorillas were led by Fay with eight of the Gorillas 28 kills after the first two sets.

Western came out of the break on fire forcing the Gorillas into a .000 hitting percentage. With the score tied at 11 the Griffons were able to push outscoring the Gorillas 14-8 earning the 25-19 set victory. Western had 15 kills hitting .171 in the set.

Western looked to be in control of the fourth set being up 20-10 but the Gorillas never gave up closing the match on a 17-5 run tying the set at two with the 27-25 set victory. Set five belonged to the Griffons as they closed the set on an 11-5 run earning the victory and stay undefeated at home on the season.

Western finished the match with 71 kills with Johnston finishing the 20 kills and Alex Behnke chipping in 10. Hattey finished with a career high 60 of the Griffons 68 set assists while Faubel had 23 of the Griffons 89 digs.

The Gorillas had 57 kills with Fay collecting 12 kills. Rebecca Pearson had 34 set assists while Christa McCaw had 36 of their 84 digs. The Gorillas fall to 7-17 overall and 4-7 in MIAA play.

Western returns to action on homecoming Saturday when they host the Southwest Baptist Bearcats on October 22. Game time is set for 7:00 pm from the MWSU Fieldhouse.

Western volleyball snaps 4-game skid with sweep at Southern

The Missouri Western volleyball team snapped a four match losing streak in convincing fashion picking up a 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-12) road victory against the Missouri Southern Lions. This marked the first road victory for the Griffons this season. Alex Behnke had an outstanding match for the Griffons hitting .692 with 10 kills in 13 attacks with just on error. Western improves to 10-11 on the season and to 3-5 in MIAA action.

The Griffons used a 15-2 run allowing the Griffons to run away with set one 25-13. Western hit a remarkable .435 in set one with 14 kills with just four errors in 23 attacks.

Set two was a bit closer as the two teams played to a seven all tie after the first 14 points of the set. From there the Griffons went on a 9-2 run opening up a seven point advantage at 16-9 after an attack error by Katie Politte of Missouri Southern. The Lions closed winning 12 of the final 23 points but it was too late as the Griffons won set two 25-21 while taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

Western closed the match hitting .381 with 13 kills and just four errors in set three. Western forced the Lions into hitting -/125 in the set with just five kills and nine errors. Western took a 7-6 lead after 13 points but took control after that outscoring the Lions 18-6 earning the 25-12 victory and the sweep.

Western had 40 kills hitting a season high .337 with just 11 errors. Stephanie Hattey finished with 35 of the Griffons 37 set assists while Tahler Johnston had 10 of the Griffons 37 digs.

The Lions fall to 4-16 on the season and 2-6 MIAA play. They hit just .065 with 26 kills and 20 errors. Casey Ball finished with 10 kills while Sydney Potts had 20 set assists. Rocky Crook had 13 of the Lions 34 digs.

The Griffons return home for just their third home match of the season when they host the Pittsburg State Gorillas on Friday, October 21 from the MWSU Fieldhouse. Match time is set for 6:30 pm.

Griffons hang on to defeat Emporia for third straight win

Nineteen first half points helped Missouri Western football survive a late charge by the Hornets on their homecoming, and escaped Jones Field at Welch  Stadium with a 22-16 win. Western improved to 5-2 on the season; 4-2 in the MIAA. Emporia State fell to 2-5 and 1-5 in the MIAA.

Western had to recover an onside kick attempt with 1:06 remaining to secure the victory, after taking a 20-point lead into the fourth quarter. Down 22-2 to begin the fourth quarter, Emporia got a 50-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Eckenrode and a 3-yard TD strike from Eckenrode to RayRay Davis in the fourth to pull within six.

A personal foul on the Griffons during the extra-point attempt set the Hornets up for potentially great field position, but Western was able to recover the onside kick and secure the victory. For Western, it was their seventh consecutive win over the Hornets.

Travis Partridge passed for over 200 yards for the first time in his career. The sophomore quarterback was 19-30 for 238 yards and three touchdowns, with no interceptions. Partridge was efficient in the first half, going to halftime 11-15 for 152 yards. All three of his TD passes came before halftime.

Michael Hill had another 100 yard performance, rushing 20 times for 112 yards. Hill also had five catches for 73 yards and a touchdown. Partridge rushed 13 times for 42 yards. Tarrell Downing led the Griffons with six receptions for 86 yards and a touchdown.

Hill got the scoring started for the Griffons, with an eight yard touchdown reception. Reggie Jordan found the endzone for the first time this season with 1:36 to go in the first quarter on a 10 yard touchdown reception.

The defense dominated the Hornets through three quarters, holding Emporia out of the end zone until five minutes into the fourth quarter. Emporia’s only first half points came on a Partridge fumble that was recovered in the end zone by David Fowler.

Tom Madget led the Western defense with 12 total tackles; nine solo. Ben Pister had two sacks to go with his four tackles and David Bass added his ninth sack on the season. Jeremy Weston chipped in three tackles and his fourth interception of the season.

The Griffons return to Spratt Stadium for homecoming on Oct. 15 against Truman at 1:30 p.m.

Western allows five second half goals in loss to Northwest

Griffon soccer’s second half woes continued, allowing five goals in the second frame and falling 5-1 to Northwest Missouri State Thursday at Spratt Stadium. The fourth consecutive loss for the Griffons dropped their season record to 3-7 overall and 0-4 in the MIAA.

After a scoreless first half, Northwest got on the board at the 56:11 mark on Victoria Von Mende’s 10th goal of the season. The Bearcats struck again at the 60:57 mark when Hannah Silvey got a 5-yard unassisted shot past Kelly Voigts.

Ashley Grunder scored the Griffons only goal, and her first of the season off of an Audrey Henderson pass. Tammie Eieberger added her ninth and 10th goals of the season to cap off the Bearcats’ five-goal half.

Northwest improved to 7-3-2 overall, 4-1 in conference play. Kelly Voigts managed 11 saves on 16 shots on goal. The Bearcats outshot the Griffons 26-10 on the night. Western travels to Joplin Saturday, Oct. 15 to take on Missouri Southern at 6 p.m.

Griffon Basketball Tip-off Party set for October 25

Fans can get their first look at the 2011-2012 Griffon men’s and women’s basketball teams on Tuesday, October 25th at 7:30 PM as the 8th Annual Griffon Basketball Tip-Off Party will take place.

The night’s festivities will begin with the traditional basketball game pitting the MWSU Faculty against students from the Student Government Association and local media.  Then, the Griffon men’s and women’s basketball teams will be introduced followed by addresses from both Coach Smith and Coach Plett on the outlook for this years teams.

Both teams will showcase their skills with a short scrimmage followed by a slam dunk contest by the men’s team while the women will compete in a three point contest.

Admission to the event is free with the first 500 fans in attendance receiving free t-shirts, pizza & refreshments.

Western students will also be highly involved in the event competing in various contests for gift cards and cash prizes with the grand finale of the evening featuring one lucky student having the opportunity to make a half-court shot for $10,000.  Western spirit groups will also give performances.

Practice for both teams begins this Friday, October 15.

Exhibition play opens up for both teams on Thursday, November 3rd as they host Livin The Dream in an exhibition doubleheader with women’s tip set for 5:30 PM followed by the men at 7:30 PM.

Missouri Western volleyball falls in four sets at Quincy

Missouri Western made 33 hitting errors falling 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-17, 25-19) on the road against regional opponent Quincy University. Alex Behnke and Tahler Johnston finished with 14 kills apiece while Stephanie Hattey finished with 39 set assists. Western falls to 9-10 on the season.

The Griffons struggled in set one getting down 11-2. The Griffons came back cutting the Hawk advantage to 13-12 after an attack error by Christine Williams of Quincy. The rest of the set would belong to Quincy as they went on a 12-6 run winning the set 25-18.

Set two was much better for the Griffons as they hit .355 with just three errors and 14 kills. Western led by as many as eight in the set cruising to the 25-21 victory. The final two sets belonged to the Hawks as Western had 20 combined hitting errors in the two sets. The Hawks had just 17 hitting errors in the whole match and seven combined in set three and four. Quincy won set three 25-17 and set four 25-19. Quincy improved to 8-9 with the victory.

Sarah Faubel led Western with 26 digs while Hattey had two service aces. Hattey also had 12 digs and one kill in the match.

The Hawks finished with 52 kills hitting .259 in the match. Beiann Joslin had 16 kills hitting .433 with only three errors. Lyndsay Kooi had 42 of the Hawks 46 set assists while Damaris Linker had 17 of Quincy’s 54 digs. Quincy also had 10 kills and four service aces.

Western will return to MIAA action on Friday, October 14 when they travel to Hays, Kan. to take on the Fort Hays State Tigers. First serve is set for 7:00 pm in Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Western women’s golfers finish third at Park Fall Invite

The Missouri Western women’s golf team finished in third place at the Park University Fall Invite. The event was played at The Deuce @ The National in Parkville University and is being hosted by Park University. The Western finished three strokes out of second place firing a two round total of 669 (332-337). Grand View University shot a 666 (323-343) while the winner of the event was Fort Hays State University with a 654 (326-328).

Natalie Bird led the charge for Western finishing in 5th with 163 (78-85). Ana Laura Gomez of Bellevue University won the event with an 8-over 148 (75-73) while Samantha Nielsen of Fort Hays State finished in second with a 153 (74-79).

Bellevue University finished in fourth place with a 698 while Park University and Northwest Missouri State University finished fifth and sixth with 698 and 699 respectively.

Shelby Stone finished in sixth for the Griffons with a 164 (80-84) while Kristen Cooley finished in a tie for 12th with a 170 (86-84). Casi Webb and Darcy Smith rounded out the Griffons squad with a 172 and 186 respectively.

Western will play its final tournament of the fall on Sunday, October 23 and Monday, October 24 when they participate in the Truman State University Bulldog Classic in Kirksville, Mo. The event will be played at the Kirksville Country Club.

Griffon men place third at final fall tournament

The Missouri Western men’s golf team finished in third place in their final tournament of the fall. Western played in the Park University Fall invite which was played at The Duece @ The National in Parkville, Mo. The Griffons fired a two round total of 614 (296-318) four strokes better than Bellevue University’s 618 (316-318). The top Griffon finisher was Tyler Gast, tying for 11th with a 152 (72-80).

The winner of the event was Grand View University with a 576 (294-282) which was 13 strokes better than Fort Hays State’s 589 (289-300). Avila University finished 5th with a 624 while Baker fired a 644 finishing in 6th.

Yousaf Khan of Grand View won the event with a 2-over par 142 (77-65) one stroke better than teammate Aaron Ahrendsen and Tom O’Keefe of Fort Hays State. James O’Brien and Derek Hawkins finished in a tie for 15th with a 153 while Logan Gillilan, Scott Shelton and Kenny Stone fired 155, 156 and 162 respectively.

Western wrapped up its fall playing in five events with third being their top finish. They also finished tied for 5th, 7th and 8th.

MWSU’s Downing named MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week

Missouri Western junior wide receiver/return specialist Tarrell Downing has been selected as part of this week’s MIAA Football Student-Athletes of the Week by the conference office and a panel of Sports Information Directors. Downing earned special teams player of the week honors for his performance in the Griffons 81-20 win over Lincoln University last Saturday in St. Joseph, Mo.

MIAA SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Tarrell Downing, WR/RS, Missouri Western

Downing had a career game in the return game for the Griffons accumulating 166 all-purpose yards which all came on kickoff or punt returns. After the Griffons forced a three and out on the Blue Tigers opening possession, Downing returned the ensuing punt 72 yards for a touchdown, putting Western up 7-0 just a minute and a half into the contest. After the Blue Tigers cut the Griffons lead to 19-6 midway through the second quarter, Downing struck again, this time on a kickoff return. The junior from St. Louis, Mo., took a ball from the 12-yard line and returned it 88 yards for a TD, putting Western up 26-6 and sparking the Griffons to 26 straight points in the final 5:47 of the half.  The last time the Griffons returned a punt for a touchdown was on Oct. 10, 2009, when Cedric Houston did it against Truman State. The last kickoff return was by TJ Fannin on Nov. 6, 2010, against Fort Hays State.

MIAA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Justin Cooper, RB, Washburn

Cooper rushed for a career-high 168 yards on 19 carries, tying a career high with three touchdown runs adding four catches for 12 yards in the win over the Bulldogs. The senior from Denver, Colo., had runs of 5-yards and 6-yards in the first half and added a season-long 73-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. He is now 6th in all-time rushing yards at Washburn with 2,150, becoming one of seven Ichabods to go over the 2,000-yard mark.

MIAA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Dakota Palan-Johnson, DE, Washburn

Palan-Johnson led the Ichabods with three sacks in the game against the Bulldogs, helping Washburn set a school record of nine sacks in a game. The senior from Denver, Colo., also added 4.5 tackles for loss for 23 yards along with the three sacks for 18 yards collecting eight total tackles (4 solo). Washburn’s defense held the Bulldogs to 66 yards rushing and 239 yards passing with a 3.8 yards per play average in 81 total plays ran.

The Griffons return to action on Saturday, October 15 when they host Emporia State University in Emporia, Kan. Kickoff is set for 2:00 pm from Jones Field at Welch Stadium and you can hear the game on 680 KFEQ.

Griffons use big plays to blow out Lincoln, 81-20

The Missouri Western football team used big plays defeating the Lincoln Blue Tigers 81-20 in the annual Hall of Fame game. Western tied the school record for most points in a game with 81, a record they set a season ago against Lincoln. The Griffons scored 10 touchdowns in the contest with two coming on special teams, one from the defense and seven from the offense. Senior kicker Greg Zuerlein scored 19 of the Griffons 81 points tying a school record with 10 extra points. He tied Brad Beckwith who set it a season ago against Lincoln. Western improves to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in MIAA action.

Missouri Western scored 26 points in the final 5:47 of the first half claiming a 37 point leading heading to the locker room. The Griffons racked up 199 yards of total offense with Michael Hill rushing for 94 yards on eight carries and two touchdowns. Hill also caught two passes for 56 yards and a touchdown.

The Griffons opened up the scoring on a Tarrell Downing 72 yard punt return with 13:34 to play in the first quarter giving Western the 7-0 lead.  Hill caught a 53 yard touchdown from Travis Partridge on the Griffons next possession giving Western the 14-0 lead with 9:42 to play. Greg Zuerlein kicked his first of two field goals with 12:14 to play in the second quarter from 32 yards out giving Western the 17-0 lead.

The Blue Tigers hung in there driving down to the Griffons four yard line before being turned away on fourth down. A Partridge interception on the next possession set Lincoln up on Western’s 12 yards line. The Blue Tigers went 12 yards on three plays with Deon Brock rushing in from one yard out cutting the Griffon lead to 17-6.

From there the Griffons dominated as Yomi Alli blocked the extra point returning it for two points. Downing returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards to give Western the 26-6 lead with 5:33 to play in the half. A Zuerlein 50-yard field goal along with two touchdown runs by Hill, a 13-yarder and 44-yarder, gave the Griffons the commanding halftime lead.

Ben Jackson and Shane Simpson had interceptions in the final five minutes while Ben Pister led the way with six tackles.

Lincoln had 151 yards of total offense with Robert Redmond connecting on 12-of-19 for 115 yards. Corderious Gregory had four catches for 59 yards. Kendrick Causey led the way with 6 tackles.

The Griffons continued the onslaught into the second half when Cody Kremer ran an interception back 30 yards giving Western the 50-6 lead with 12:21 to play in the third.
Western scored 10 more points in the third with Dominic Thomas rushing in from two yards out and Zuerlein hitting his second field goal of over 50 yards making a 51 yarder.

Western used touchdowns by Jerrin Walton, Thomas and Dalton Krysa in the fourth to give the Griffons the 61 point victory. Western finished the night rushing for 363 yards on 29 attempts for an average of 12.5 per rush. Western improves to 4-0 when they rush for over 200 yards in a game this season. Western had 478 yards of total offense holding the ball just over 17 minutes in the game.

Thomas rushed nine times for 124 yard and two touchdowns while Walton and Hill finished with 94 yards. Hill and Derek Libby caught two passes apiece. Downing had two punt returns for 78 yards and one kickoff return for 88 yards. Zuerlein had 14 kickoffs with six resulting in touchbacks.

The Blue Tigers had 452 yards of total offense with 317 coming through the air. Redmond connected on 31-45 attempts for 269 yards and one touchdown but had three interceptions. Gregory finished with 170 yards on 13 receptions and one touchdown. Brock had 73 yards rushing on 20 carries with on touchdown.

Defensively Stephen Juergens had nine tackles with one being for a loss while Meshack Kennedy had seven tackles. Lincoln was led by Kendrick Causey with 11 tackles.

Western will hit the road for on Saturday, October 15 when they travel to Emporia, Kan. to take on the Emporia State Hornets in MIAA action. Game time is set for 1:00 pm from Jones Field at Welch Stadium.
