Missouri-Indiana to kick at 3 PM on SEC Network

riggertMizzouThe University of Missouri football game on Sept. 20th against the Indiana Hoosiers has been selected for a 3 p.m. (central time) kickoff from MU’s Memorial Stadium/Faurot Field, and the game will be televised live on the SEC Network.

The Tigers, currently 2-0 on the season, are preparing for a Saturday home game at 11 a.m. against the defending Fiesta Bowl champion UCF Knights, while Indiana (1-0) is coming off a bye week and will play at Bowling Green this Saturday.  The Hoosiers opened their 2014 season with a 28-10 home win over Indiana State on Aug. 30th.

The contest will mark the second-straight season, and the 12th time overall, that the two schools will meet on the gridiron.  Mizzou claimed a 45-28 road win in Bloomington, Ind. last year on the way to a 12-2 season.  The Sept. 20th game will be Indiana’s first appearance in Columbia since 1991, when the teams played to a 27-27 tie.  Interestingly, each of Indiana’s last two appearances at Faurot Field have ended in ties, as the schools also played to a 28-28 standstill in 1988.  Indiana leads the overall series by a 6-3-2 count.

Plenty of good seats remain available for the Mizzou-Indiana game, and can be ordered online at www.MUTigers.com, or by calling 1-800-CAT-PAWS (884-PAWS locally).

Mauk throws five TDs as No. 24 Mizzou rolls past Toledo

MUTOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Maty Mauk was sharp for most of the day — and when he did make a big mistake in the first half, receiver Bud Sasser was there to bail him out.

Sasser hustled back and forced a fumble after Mauk threw an interception in the first quarter, and No. 24 Missouri had a fairly easy time after that in a 49-24 victory over Toledo on Saturday. Sasser also caught a touchdown pass in the third quarter, helping coach Gary Pinkel to a win against his former program.

The Tigers (2-0) were only up 14-7 when Jordan Haden intercepted a pass by Mauk and returned it all the way to the Missouri 12 before Sasser caught him and forced the fumble. Missouri recovered.

“I started to follow him as soon as he picked it off, and I knew he didn’t know where I was. So I was just hoping that I was going to be able to catch him,” Sasser said. “That was the first thing that went through my mind — get the ball back, get it out and give someone else a chance to hop on it.”

Mauk threw for 325 yards and five touchdowns and ran for a TD. The Tigers never trailed in what was expected to be a tricky road game against one of the top teams in the Mid-American Conference. Missouri led 35-7 in the third quarter, and the Rockets (1-1) could get no closer than 14 points in the second half.

Pinkel coached Toledo from 1991-2000 before taking over at Missouri. He is the winningest coach at both schools.

Toledo’s Kareem Hunt ran for 148 yards and three touchdowns, but Rockets quarterback Phillip Ely went down with a right knee injury late in the third quarter.

Toledo coach Matt Campbell said it was too early to make a final determination on the severity of the injury.

“Doesn’t look good,” Campbell said. “That’s all I know.”

Mauk went 21 of 32 and was intercepted twice. His five touchdown passes equaled a career high, and this was his first time surpassing 300 yards passing.

“We came out and had a really good game plan,” Mauk said. “We knew when we wanted to take shots, based on alignment. There were multiple things we practiced all week that we were able to execute today.”

Missouri was the first Southeastern Conference school to play at Toledo’s Glass Bowl. The Tigers hosted the Rockets last year — but Pinkel doesn’t sound interested in another home-and-home series any time soon.

“I don’t think that would be a very good idea, just because Toledo’s too good,” Pinkel said.

The Tigers opened the scoring on Russell Hansbrough’s 16-yard touchdown run. Hunt answered with a 38-yard scoring run later in the first quarter.

Mauk threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Darius White and added a 1-yard scoring run of his own to make it 21-7. He then threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jimmie Hunt with 6:12 remaining in the second quarter.

The Tigers led 28-7 at halftime, although Toledo could have kept it closer if not for a couple mishaps deep in Missouri territory. Haden’s interception-turned-fumble was one of them. Then in the second quarter, with Missouri up 21-7, Toledo had first-and-goal from the 6, but a false start and a 17-yard sack forced the Rockets to try a field goal, which was blocked.

Mauk threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Murphy early in the third, but Kareem Hunt answered with two touchdowns for Toledo. The Rockets had a chance to get the ball back again, but Mauk found Sasser for 47 yards on third-and-7, and on the next play those two connected again for a 25-yard touchdown.

That 75-yard drive took only 57 seconds, and Missouri led 42-21. Mauk also threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Jimmie Hunt in the fourth.

Of the game’s 10 touchdown drives, only two were longer than 1:31, and four took less than a minute.

Ely went 17 of 34 for 204 yards with an interception. Kareem Hunt rushed for more than two touchdowns for the first time, but his statistical output was small consolation afterward.

“I feel like it doesn’t really mean that much, because we didn’t get the win,” he said. “I can rush for like 57 yards, and if we win, I’ll accept that.”

No. 24 Missouri defeats South Dakota State 38-18

MUCOLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Maty Mauk threw for 178 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 24 Missouri past South Dakota State 38-18 in the season opener for both teams Saturday.

Mauk seemed at ease early, finding receiver Darius White crossing behind the Jackrabbits’ defense for a 44-yard touchdown pass just 50 seconds into the game. The Tigers extended their lead to 21-10 at halftime and never trailed.

Zach Zenner rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries for South Dakota State (0-1), who fell to 0-7 against FBS teams since moving to Division I in 2004. Zach Lujan completed 21 of 28 passes for 239 yards and an interception in place of Austin Sumner, who left the game in the first quarter and did not return.

Missouri moved to 14-0 all-time against Football Championship Subdivision teams and has won 13 consecutive season openers.

The Tigers’ early 7-0 lead lasted only one play thanks to a 75-yard touchdown run by Zenner, but Mauk found White again on the third drive, this time for a 39-yard pass in the corner of the end zone behind safety Anthony Sherrils. White finished with two receptions for 83 yards and two touchdowns.

Missouri added another score in the first quarter on Russell Hansbrough’s 10-yard run that featured a missed tackle and a bit of misdirection. Hansbrough started after backing up Henry Josey last year, finishing with 20 carries for a career-high 126 yards.

Safety Duron Singleton set up the touchdown with his first career interception for Missouri, catching Sumner’s pass at South Dakota State’s 29-yard line and returning it 19 yards. The play marked the 45th consecutive game in which the Tigers forced a turnover, the longest such streak in the country.

Missouri picked third in preseason SEC Volleyball poll

riggertMizzouThe reigning Southeastern Conference Champion Mizzou volleyball team was picked to finish third in a loaded SEC this season, as announced by the league office on Tuesday (Aug. 12). Mizzou garnered one first place vote and finished with 114 total points in the annual poll, which is voted on by the league’s 13 coaches. This is the highest that Mizzou volleyball has been selected in a Preseason SEC poll and it is the highest for the program since 2005 when the team was picked to finish second in the Big 12.

“After the top-15 AVCA ranking yesterday, this gives our fans a lot to be excited about and it should be great motivation for our team,” head coach Wayne Kreklow said. “After losing two first team All-Americans, being picked third by the other coaches shows the amount of respect that people around the league and country have for the talent we have coming back. That being said, we need to go out and prove that we belong in that spot. Preseason rankings are great, but all that matters is where we end up at the end of the year.”

Mizzou is coming off of a 35-1 season after completing an unbeaten regular season with a perfect 34-0 mark, including an 18-0 tally in SEC play. The Tigers reset school records for wins, sweeps, conference wins, conference sweeps, consecutive wins and were the first ever SEC team to run the table in the regular season. The Tigers also led the nation in five statistical categories (hitting, kills, assists, wins and winning percentage) while resetting the program record with its .356 team hitting percentage.

Florida was picked to win the league, garnering all 12 of the possible first-place votes. Kentucky was picked second while LSU (fourth) and Alabama (fifth) rounded out the top five.

Mizzou will open the season on Aug. 20 with the annual Black & Gold Scrimmage at the Hearnes Center, beginning at 6:30 p.m. For all the latest on Mizzou volleyball, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on twitter @MizzouVB.

Missouri dismisses Torren Jones from basketball team

MUMissouri has parted ways with sophomore forward Torren Jones, according to an announcement from Tiger head coach Kim Anderson.

“We have high standards at the University of Missouri and after consulting with Mike Alden, I have made the decision to dismiss Torren Jones from our program,” Anderson said in a statement. “I am disappointed in Torren’s actions and want to be very clear about the culture of accountability we are building within our program. It’s a privilege to wear the University of Missouri uniform and we will represent our University and state with great integrity.”

The 6-foot-8 Jones came to Missouri from high-powered prep school La Lumiere (Ind.) and played in 30 games last year. Jones wasn’t a big impact last season, averaging 8.1 minutes per game and only scoring 63 points and grabbing 69 rebounds, but he would have given the Tigers some front court depth this season.

But with Jonathan Williams III and Ryan Rosburg returning after starting last season and senior Keanau Post returning, Missouri will still have a lot of experience returning in their front court. Freshmen Jakeenan Gant and D’Angelo Allen will also vie for minutes and likely receive more playing time now that Jones is moving elsewhere.
