Adams throws 5 TD passes as Northwest rolls Eastern New Mexico

Trevor Adams tied a school record with five touchdown passes and threw for the second most yards in school history with 444 as Northwest Missouri State ran away from Eastern New Mexico 65-20 in non-conference football action on Saturday at Bearcat Stadium.

The Bearcats and Greyhounds traded scores early on as ENMU struck first with the first of three touchdown passes from Wesley Wood. After a blocked extra point the Greyhounds would extend their lead, but a failed two-point conversion shifted the momentum as Adams and the Northwest defense stole the show.

The win moves the Bearcats’ record to 6-1 on the year setting up a top 10 match-up with No. 5 Washburn next weekend. The Greyhounds fall to 2-5 on the year and have now lost two straight.

Adams fired five touchdown passes including a game tying, 35-yard pass and catch to David Mosley to start the second quarter. Adams finished 23-of-31 as his 444 yards is second to John McMenamin (473yds vs. Central Missouri 10/27/01). His five touchdown tosses also tied a school record joining the likes of McMenamin, Blake Bolles, Travis Miles, Chris Greisen and Greg Teale.

The Greyhounds used 26 plays to build their lead while the Bearcats would tie the game on their 12th play from scrimmage when Adams found Mosley for his first score of the season. Mosley also led the Bearcats in receiving with four catches for 89 yards.

The Bearcats would get the first stop of the game as senior captain Chad Kilgore sacked Wood and forced the Greyhounds to punt. Kilgore led Northwest with 11 tackles on the afternoon and his sack was the first of four from the Bearcat defense.

Just five plays following the ENMU punt, Adams found Tyler Shaw for his team leading eighth touchdown catch of the season. The score gave Northwest its first lead of the afternoon 27-20.

Northwest would score two more times on a Todd Adolf 39-yard field goal and a 5-yard plunge from James Franklin giving the Bearcats a 37-20 lead at intermission.

With a few minor adjustments the Bearcat defense strangled the Greyhound offense holding them scoreless from the second quarter on. ENMU also only managed 94 yards of offense in the second half and one first down.

Northwest recorded three second half sacks and forced three turnovers, two fumbles and a Matt Massey interception. Massey would also recover the second fumble from the Greyhounds following Adams’ second touchdown toss to Shaw.

On the first play following the turnover MIAA leading scorer, Jordan Simmons, would find an opening and outrun the Greyhound secondary to his team high 13th touchdown of the season. The score also vaulted Simmons into eighth on the all-time list for touchdowns with 31. Simmons led Northwest in rushing with 80 yards on six carries.

Northwest has now scored at least 65 points four times this season as they entered the weekend leading the nation averaging 55.5 points per game.

The win also snapped a three-game regular season losing streak to Lone Star Conference teams.

Northwest continues a two-game home stretch as they host 5th-ranked Washburn next Saturday with a 2 p.m. kickoff for Homecoming. The Bearcats snuck out of Topeka last year after a two-point conversion stop preserved a 41-40 road win.

Bearcats bounce back and rally at Central Missouri

The 7th-ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcats scored 24 unanswered points and played spoiler on homecoming for No. 19 Central Missouri taking a, 38-20 win in front of an MIAA on-campus record 14,377 fans.

The Bearcats rebounded after their first conference loss in 49 games and improved to 5-1 on the year and 4-1 in league play. The Mules fall to 4-2 on the year and 3-2 in the MIAA and have now lost nine straight to the Bearcats.

Trevor Adams found Jordan Simmons down the sideline who then scampered 39-yards to the end zone extending the Bearcat lead to, 31-20. After the pass was nearly intercepted, Simmons was able to regain his balance racing to the end zone for the score that seemingly broke the Mules back.

Adams finished 13-of-25 with only one touchdown, but it was the rushing game that proved key for Northwest on Saturday.

It was the first time since head coach Adam Dorrel rejoined the Northwest coaching staff a pair of running backs finished over 100 yards rushing. James Franklin finished with 143 yards on 28 carries while Simmons added 138 yards on 19 carries.

Franklin added three touchdowns including the final score of the game, a one-yard plunge that put the game out of reach.

The Bearcats and Mules traded scores to start the game in what looked like the beginning of a shootout. However, both defenses would lock in as UCM would steal the momentum coming out of halftime when Tommy Corwin found David Cannon in the end zone giving the Mules a, 17-14 lead.

UCM would extend their lead on an Aaron Jamieson 22-yard field goal giving the Mules a, 20-14 lead after Adams’ second interception of the afternoon.

However, unlike last week, the Bearcat defense held the Mules to a field goal and scored on their next drive putting together a six play 69-yard drive that was capped by Bryant Hummel’s first touchdown of the season putting Northwest back on top.

“With our defense to hold after the interception it gave us a different feeling from last week,” said Dorrel. “To score after the field goal I think was really the turning point in the game.”

On the ensuing kickoff the Mules return man Alexis Reedus fumbled and Clarke Snodgrass recovered for the Bearcats on the UCM 36-yard line.

Todd Adolf would add a 46-yard field goal to give the Bearcats a 24-20 lead after the turnover.

After Adams only touchdown toss of the afternoon to Simmons the Bearcats would pick off a Mules pass to seal the win as Chad Kilgore grabbed his first pick of the season. Kilgore added a tackle for a loss and a forced fumble on the day, but his second half presence in the Mules backfield jump started the Bearcat defense in the second half.

“This was a big game for us. To come on the road in an atmosphere like this it really helps us,” said Dorrel. “It’s not easy to play here. We played physical for 60 minutes including guys sucking it up and playing hurt.”

It was also the first time since a 2009 playoff win over California (Pa.) in which Northwest rushed of over 300 yards in a game. The Bearcats finished with 308.

“To run the football like we did is not easy. They knew we were going to run the ball and to just keep doing it and see our guys finish in the fourth quarter was really fun.”

Northwest volleyball wins in five at Truman

In a back and forth battle the Northwest Missouri State volleyball Bearcats picked up a thrilling, 3-2 win over Truman State in MIAA play Friday night at Bearcat Arena.

Northwest (8-10, 2-3 MIAA) battled all night as momentum continued to shift to both sides before the Bearcats pulled out the five set victory. With the win over Truman the Bearcats have now won four of their last five heading into an important home match against nationally ranked Central Missouri in their annual “Dig Pink” match.

Despite the score the Bearcats looked impressive in the first set before the Bulldogs took sets two and three. Northwest closed out the match winning, 25-21, 20-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-13.

The Bearcats raced out to a quick, 6-3 lead in the fifth set after they fought to come back in set four and force the deciding set. Truman would take the lead on a kill in the middle forcing a Northwest timeout, but the Bearcats would not respond until a second timeout and TSU held a, 10-7 lead.

However, the second Northwest timeout and a Whitney Mason kill would again swing the momentum back to the Bearcats. Northwest would go on their own run taking a, 13-12 lead after a second attack from Alex Hanna found the middle of the TSU side of the floor.

A pair of unforced Bulldog errors would give Northwest game point as Brooke Bartosh closed out the win with a kill down the left sideline. Bartosh finished with 13 kills for the Bearcats and was extremely efficient hitting .312 on the night.

Senior Laira Akin recorded a season high 56 assists and 12 digs to close out her ninth double-double of the season and third consecutive.

Abby Graves continued to knock down kills with a team high 17 and earned her fourth double-double of the season adding a season high 16 digs.

Amy Majors led an impressive offensive attack by the Bearcats, hitting .419 and adding a season high 16 kills.

With the wind being to their advantage the Bulldogs struck first in the 7th minute when Trisha Shoemaker found the net off of an assist from Olivia Hayes.  This would be the only goal of the half.

The Bearcats’ defiant defense would prevail in the second half with them allowing only three shots by the Bulldogs; however, Northwest was unable to find the net for just the third time this season and was blanked for the second time this season by the Bulldogs.

Truman State would put the game out-of-reach in the 86th minute when Kelsey Twellman found the net for the Bulldogs.

Truman State had three corner kicks in the contest while the Bearcats had eleven.  Kelsey Adams recorded eight saves in the loss for Northwest.  Jayne Grisham recorded one save for the Bulldogs.
