Griffon softball splits doubleheader at Northwest Missouri State

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Missouri Western softball team split a doubleheader at Northwest Missouri State Tuesday. The Griffons won the opener 8-0 before losing game two 1-0. MWSU is now 16-19 this season and 7-3 in the MIAA.

Missouri Western made quick work of the Bearcats in game one with an 8-0, 5-inning victory for the team’s ninth win in 10 tries. The Griffons left two runners on base in the seventh inning of a game two pitcher’s duel that went the Bearcats’ way, 1-0.

The rivals entered Tuesday’s doubleheader as part of a three-way tie for second place in the MIAA standings and left as the only two teams with 7-3 MIAA records, tied for third.

NOTABLES
– Lonnie Groves and Gabi Carter both doubled and homered in game one with Carter driving in three runs

– The Griffons stole five bases on five attempts in game one

– Kenzie Hilzer continued a hot streak in the circle, striking out five Bearcats without a walk and pitching her second shutout over her last four starts

– Missouri Western had two hits in game two with Kaili Hinds holding Northwest Missouri to four hits

– Hinds and Hilzer have combined to hold opponents to 22 runs over their last 69 innings on 57 hits. Over the same span (five appearances each) they have struck out 37 and walked 18. The Griffons are 8-2 during that stretch.

Northwest Missouri State completes three-game sweep of Washburn

The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team concludes series with Washburn with a 8-3 sweep, on Saturday in Topeka, Kan.

The Bearcats improve to 15-12 overall and 11-5 in MIAA play. The Ichabods fall to 8-19 and 2-14 in conference action.

Key Northwest Statistics
– Northwest scored one run in the first, four in the third, one in the fourth, one in the sixth and one in the ninth inning. The Ichabods scored two runs in the fifth and one in the eighth inning.
– The Bearcats had eight runs on 13 hits with no errors. Washburn had three runs on seven hits with no errors.
– Mondesi Gutierrez went 3-for-5 with one run scored, one RBI and a double.
– Luke Hassman finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, one run scored, one walk and a double.
– Logan Rycraft was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a sacrifice hit and a stolen base.

Key Northwest Innings
– Figg started a two out rally with a single through the right side and promptly moved to second on a wild pitch. Hassman singled through the left side to score Figg and put the Bearcats in lead.

– Rycraft started the third inning with a single to left field and advanced to second on a sinlge to right field by Gutierrez. Figg would load the bases with a one out walk. Hassman singled to right field to score Rycraft and advance the runners. Handzlik hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Gutierrez and put Figg on third and Hassman at first. Barratt doubled to left field to score both Hassman and Figg and to put the Bearcats up, 5-0.

– To start the fourth inning, Hussey singled up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rycraft. Hussey then came in to score when Bilodeau singled up the middle.

– Rycraft got things going in the sixth with a single to the shortstop and quickly stole second. Gutierrez would bring him in when he doubled to right field and gave the Bearcats a 7-2 lead.

– Gutierrez sent a one out single up the middle to start the ninth inning. Figg reached base on a fielder’s choice and with two outs Hassman doubled to score Figg from first base.

The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team defeats Washburn 6-3 on Friday in Topeka, Kansas.

The Bearcats improve to 14-12 overall and 10-5 in conference while the Ichabods fall to 8-18 overall and 2-13 in conference play.

– Bilodeau started the game off with a single to center field to get the Bearcats going. He was then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Gutierrez and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Bilodeau then came in to score on a two run homerun by Figg to give the Bearcats a 2-0 lead.

– In the top of the fifth inning, Bilodeua got the Bearcats going again with a one out walk and Gutierrez was hit by a pitch. After an out, Hassman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kevin Handzlik drew a two out walk to score Bilodeua and kept the bases loaded. Barratt would then reach on an error to score Guiterrez and Hassman to conclude the scoring for the Bearcats.

– Derek Hussey drew a one out walk in the top of the eighth inning and quickly advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rycraft. Bilodeau hit a double to deep right field to score Hussey from second and make the score 6-1.

Northwest softball goes 1-1 against Northeastern State

The Northwest Missouri State University softball team splits in a double header against Northeastern State in Maryville Friday as they lost game one 8-7 but bounced back to win the second game 10-1.

The Bearcats improve to 15-9 overall and 6-2 in conference, while Northeastern State falls to 17-14 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

Game One Key Statistics (Northwest 7, Northeastern State 8)
– Northwest scored one run in the second, four in the third, one in the fourth and one in the seventh inning. The RiverHawks scored three in the third, two in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh inning.

Gilson advanced to second on a wild pitch and came around to score with Rawie on a double down the right field line by Allen to make the score 5-3.

– Baderdeen started the fourth inning with a single to third baseman and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Maher. Moses also singled to third base to put runners on the corners. Weis would give the Bearcats a 6-5 lead with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Baderdeen.

– Weis lead off the bottom of the seventh inning with a double to right field and moved to third on a single to right field by Keeney. Rawie reached base on a fielder’s choice to score Weis from third and conclude the scoring for the Bearcats.
Game Two Key Statistics (Northwest 10, Northeastern State 1)
– The Bearcats scored four runs in the second, two in the third and four in the fifth inning. Northeastern State scored one run in the second inning.
– Northwest had ten runs on nine hits and one error. The RiverHawks had one run on three hits and three errors.
– Rebecca Maher finished the day going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
– Gilson was perfect from the plate going 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two RBIs, a walk and a homerun.

– Rawie started the bottom of the seventh inning with her fifth homerun on the year to deep left field. Allen reached safely on a fielder’s choice then moved to second on a single to left field by Sutton and Baderdeen walked to load the bases. Allen scored on a wild pitch and both runners advanced. Maher singled to the short stop score Sutton from third. Moses reached base on an error to score Baderdeen and give the Bearcats a 4-1 lead.

– Rawie lead off the third inning with a walk. Gilson sent her second homerun of the year over the left field fence to score Rawie to make the score 6-1.

– After an out, Rawie and Gilson both drew walks and Allen reached on an error to load the bases. Lynnlee Parrott came in to pinch run for Allen. Baderdeen singled to right field to score Rawie and Gilson and put Parrott on third. Maher singled to right center to score Parrott and Baderdeen and gave the Bearcats a 10-1 lead.

Bearcat softball takes two from Central Oklahoma

The Northwest Missouri State University softball team swept a pair of conference games against Central Oklahoma in Maryville, Mo.

The Bearcats improve to 14-8 overall and 5-1 in conference, while Central Oklahoma falls to 18-13 overall and 7-3 in conference play.

Game One Key Statistics (Northwest 3, Central Oklahoma 2)
– Northwest scored two runs in the second and one in the seventh inning. The Bronchos scored two runs in the fourth inning.
– The Bearcats had three runs on nine hits and one error. Central Oklahoma scored two runs on five hits and zero errors.
– Kaitlyn Weis finished the first game going 2-for-3 with one run scored, one RBI and a walk-off homerun.

Rawie singled to left center to score Weis from third and put runners on first and second. Bailey Maxwell came in to run for Keeney and scored on Parrott’s single through the right side. Rawie came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Baderdeen. Maher hit a single to right field to score Gilson from second base and to make the score 7-2.

– To start the fourth innng, Handzlik singled up the middle and then advanced to second base. Barratt drew a one out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch and Handzlik moved to third. Hussey singled through the left side to score both Handzlik and Barratt to make the score 3-2.

– After an out, Gutierrez walked and Figg doubled down the right field line to put runners at second and third. Hassman grounded out to shortstop and Gutierrez scored on the play to increase the Bearcat lead.

– Hussey drew a two out walk and Rycraft moved him to second with a single to right field. Bilodeua singled through the right side to score Hussey from second and put Rycraft on second. Gutierrez kept the inning alive with a double down the left field line to score Rycraft and conclude the scoring for the Bearcats.

– Gutierrez started the top of the ninth inning with a double down the left field line and after an out, Luke Hassman drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Tim Olson came in to pinch run for Hassman and quickly scored with Guiterrez on a triple to center field by Handzlik. Handzlik would then score on a wild pitch to give the Bearcats a 9-5 lead.

Bearcat baseball gets run-ruled at Nebraska-Kearney 17-1

The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team fell to Nebraska-Kearney 17-1 on Wednesday at Kearney, Nebraska.

The Bearcats fall to 12-12 overall and 8-5 in conference while the Lopers improve to 14-10 overall and 7-3 in conference play.

Key Northwest Statistics
– Northwest scored one run in the third inning. Nebraska-Kearney had one in the first, two in the second and third, eight in the fourth and two in the fifth and sixth innings.

– The Bearcats had one run on four hits and no errors. The Lopers had 17 runs on 18 hits with no errors.

Northwest’s Rachel Smith earns weekly MIAA softball honor

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State University sophomore pitcher Rachel Smith has been named the MIAA co-Pitcher of the Week in a release by the conference office on Tuesday. Smith threw 12.0 scoreless innings for the Bearcats this weekend, going 2-0.

On Saturday, Smith threw a complete game five-inning shutout against Upper Iowa, allowing two hits. She did not issue a walk and struck out six. She followed it up with a seven-inning complete game shutout against Northern State, allowing four hits. She did not allowed a walk and struck out eight batters.

Northwest hosts Central Oklahoma and Northeastern State this week. The Bronchos will play at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Thursday while the RiverHawks visit for a noon and 2 p.m. double header on Friday.

Northwest hires Austin Meyer as new women’s basketball coach

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State University has announced the hiring of Austin Meyer as its next head women’s basketball coach. Meyer has served the past 10 seasons on Northwest’s men’s basketball staff, including the last three seasons as its associate head coach.

“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to lead our women’s basketball program,” said Meyer. “Northwest is a special place with so many great people. Our program will have very high standards in everything we do. We will be very active in the community and will deliver a great college experience for our young women. I look forward to the challenge of building a winning culture, graduating our kids and preparing them for life after college.”

With Meyer on the bench as a full-time coach with the men’s basketball program, Northwest has won 215 games (21.5 wins per season average), captured six MIAA regular season titles, four MIAA Tournament titles and one NCAA Division II National Championship. Thirty-three Bearcats earned MIAA honors in the past decade and three were named the conference’s Player of the Year. In addition, seven student-athletes were named to the All-Defensive Team, three earned MIAA Freshman of the Year accolades and two Bearcats earned NABC All-America honors.

Meyer served as the men’s program’s lead recruiter. His other duties included organizing and running the Center Court Cat Club, organizing and presenting opponent scouting reports, coordinating official visits, coordinating team travel, community engagements, summer camps, social media, skill development and more.

Meyer was a four-year letter winner for the Bearcat men’s basketball team from 2002-06. He scored 1,294 career points and held the then-Northwest career record with 215 made three-pointers. He graduated from Northwest with his bachelor’s degree in corporate recreation in 2006 and earned his master’s in physical education in 2008. He served as a graduate assistant on Steve Tappmeyer’s staff for two seasons before being promoted to assistant coach prior to the 2008-09 season.

Bearcats get swept at Lindenwood

The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team lost both games of their double header against Lindenwood in St. Charles, Mo.

The Bearcats fall to 12-11 overall, 8-4 in conference, while the Lions improve to 12-11 overall and 5-7 in conference play.
Game One Key Statistics (Northwest 7, Lindenwood 9)
– Northwest scored one in the first, one in the third, two in the fifth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth inning. The Lions scored one in the first, five in the second and three in the fifth inning.
– The Bearcats had seven runs on 11 hits with two errors. Lindenwood had nine runs on 14 hits with no errors.

– Bilodeua, Figg, and Luke Hassman started the top of the fifth inning when the reached base on a single and two walks. Gutierrez would hit a one out double down the right field line to score Bilodeua and Figg.

– With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Barratt sent a solo homerun over the left center fence.

– Wilkinson got the eighth inning going when he hit a single to left field and Tim Olson came in to run for him. Figg and Hassman both drew walks to load the bases and advanced on a wild pitch while Olson scored on the play. Handzlik then hit a single to the shortstop to score Figg and to conclude the scoring for the Bearcats.
Game Two Key Statistics (Northwest 2, Lindenwood 7)
– The Bearcats scored scored two runs in the sixth inning. Lindenwood scored three runs in the first, two in the second and two in the fourth.
– Northwest had two runs on six hits with one error. The Lions scored seven runs on 15 hits with one error.
– Barratt finished the day going 2-for-4 with one run scored, a double and a stolen base.
