Northwest women fall at Emporia State 76-62

By David Boyce – Northwest Athletics

EMPORIA, Kan. – In the final five regular-season games, Northwest Missouri State’s women’s basketball team needs to find a way to duplicate Wednesday night’s second quarter for the entire game.

The Bearcats lost 76-62 to Emporia State at White Auditorium. But in the second quarter against a perennial power in the MIAA, the Bearcats showed what they are capable of doing.

“We knew coming in that it is hard to play here,” said senior Tanya Meyer. “They are a solid team. Being able to fight and show that fight the whole game after we got down quite a bit in the first quarter, I think that helps going into Saturday’s game. Being on the road (at Washburn), it is going to be another tough one, but we are ready for the competition.”

Against Emporia State, Meyer and freshman Jaelyn Haggard turned in performances worthy of all-conference consideration. Meyer finished with 27 points and 11 rebounds and Haggard had 23 points, four assists and four rebounds.

Northwest gave up 26 points in the first quarter and trailed by 14. The one bright spot for the Bearcats in the first 10 minutes was the scoring of Haggard, who knocked down three of four field goals and scored eight of her team’s 12 points.

The rest of the Bearcats fed off of Haggard’s energy in the second quarter and that sparked a dramatic turnaround. Although Northwest went into halftime down 38-32, the Bearcats jogged into the locker room knowing it could keep pace with Emporia State.

“I felt coming out of the first quarter, the wheels could fall off,” said Northwest coach Buck Scheel. “We didn’t do that. I was really happy the way our kids competed and cut the lead down to six.

“We had really good movement, for the most part, with the ball. We were getting some good stops defensively from everybody at different times, which is what you got to have against a team like that.”

The second-quarter surge started with a basket from Meyer, who turned up her game another notch. She scored 11 points in the second quarter.

Trailing 29-16, Northwest cut its deficit to single digits on a floater by Haggard followed by a basket by Meyer, making it 29-20.

“I think we came out in the second quarter really strong,” Haggard said. “The first quarter we had a pretty big gap between us and them, but we came out and fought. I am really proud of how hard we worked. We didn’t come out with a win, but I am proud the way we came out and grinded.”

Indeed.

A few minutes later, Haggard hit a long three-pointer that closed the gap to 31-23. Meyer then took over. A layup and a three-pointer by Meyer pulled Northwest to within five at 33-28. Northwest ended the first half on a running layup by Haggard.

“We were finding the open person on offense and not forcing up shots like we did in the first quarter,” Meyer said. “That helped us get that margin to six going into the second half.”

The Bearcats shot 56 percent from the field in the second quarter and held Emporia State to 31 percent. Meyer and Haggard combined for 28 points.

Unfortunately, Northwest’s defense wasn’t as tight in the third quarter and that hurt the Bearcats from making a push to get closer. Emporia State went 11 for 17 for a blistering 65 percent from the field in the third quarter.

Northwest shot the ball well in the third quarter, making eight of 14 shots for 57 percent. The Bearcats, though, were outscored 24-18 and that put them behind 12 points going into the final quarter. It was too much of a deficit for Northwest to make up in the final 10 minutes.

Sheel was pleased the way Haggard bounced back from Saturday’s game against Lindenwood.

“She wasn’t happy with that game,” Scheel said. “A lot of times, especially with freshmen, you don’t know how they are going to bounce back. She came in like it was another game and came out and competed.

“To have a freshman who is going through those bumps in the road and handling the learning curve of Division II as well as this conference, it is good to see.”

Missouri Western football adds 38 on national signing day

ST. JOSEPH – Missouri Western head football coach Matt Williamson has announced the signings of 38 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent.

The 2018 football signing class includes student-athletes from seven different states: Missouri (20), Kansas (7), Illinois (4), Arkansas (2), Oklahoma (2), Nebraska (1), Nevada (1) and Maryland (1). Williamson’s second signing class as head coach at Missouri Western features 31 high school seniors and seven transfers.

By position group, this year’s class includes three quarterbacks, three running backs, two wide receivers, three tight ends, five offensive linemen, four defensive linemen, seven linebackers, six defensive backs and two specialists.

“We’re very pleased to bring these young men into the Griffon Football Family,” Williamson said. “It was huge for us to be able to hit the ground early in the recruiting process this year and ensure we brought in the types of players who can be successful in our program, in the classroom and in the community. These young men will help continue to move Griffon football forward.”

Williamson and his staff were charged with replacing 17 seniors from the 2017 football team that finished with a 4-7 record. The 2018 season begins Aug. 30 when the Griffons travel to rival Northwest Missouri State.

Robertson, Porter lead Mizzou to 75-69 win at Ole Miss

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Kassius Robertson scored 27 points to lead four Missouri players in double figures and the Tigers beat Mississippi 75-69 on Tuesday night.

Jontay Porter had 18 points and 13 rebounds as Missouri (16-8, 6-5 Southeastern Conference) outscored Ole Miss 8-2 in the final 90 seconds to win their third consecutive game. Kevin Puryear and Jordan Geist added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Terence Davis scored 20 points for Ole Miss (11-13, 4-7) but was scoreless in the final 15 minutes. Bruce Stevens scored 15 points with a team-high seven rebounds and Markel Crawford added 11.

The Tigers shot 24 of 53 (45 percent) from the field and 10 of 23 (43 percent) from 3-point range, including five 3s by Robertson. Missouri was 17 of 20 (85 percent) from the free throw line, including a pair by Robertson with 18 seconds remaining to seal it.

Ole Miss was 26 of 65 (40 percent) from the field, but managed only 5 of 17 (29 percent) from 3-point range. The Rebels were 12 of 15 (80 percent) from the free throw line and committed only four turnovers, but missed three field goal attempts in the final minute.

BIG PICTURE

Missouri: The Tigers have won three straight and have two road wins in the SEC. They made all the key plays in the stretch. Porter had a pair of blocked shots as Missouri came up with three consecutive defensive stops to gain control in the final three-plus minutes. Missouri survived a series of runs by Ole Miss, which scored the first 11 points.

Ole Miss: The Rebels have lost six games by six or fewer points and have lost two straight at home after opening the SEC 4-0 at home. Leading scorer Deandre Burnett, averaging 14.8 points per game, was limited to five points and missed consecutive front ends of 1-and-1s in the second half.

FRESHMAN IMPACT

Porter followed up consecutive 13-point games against Kentucky and Alabama with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists in 13 first-half minutes. The 6-11 freshman, coming off the bench in the last three games, has been instrumental in Missouri’s three-game winning streak.

No. 10 Kansas hangs on to defeat TCU 71-64

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Devonte’ Graham scored 24 points, Udoka Azubuike added 16 and No. 10 Kansas beat TCU 71-64 on Tuesday night.

The Jayhawks (19-5, 8-3 Big 12) have struggled this season to dominate at home as they traditionally have, but were able to avoid dropping two straight in Allen Fieldhouse thanks to a grind-it-out finish.

Kouat Noi led the way for the Horned Frogs (16-8, 4-7) with 17 points. Vlad Brodzianksy had 15 points and eight rebounds.

Foul trouble limited Azubuike to play just seven minutes in the first half for Kansas, but the rest allowed him to play 18 in the second. He finished with a game-high 11 rebounds.

Mitch Lightfoot played 22 minutes and had six points in his first career start for the Jayhawks after replacing the struggling Lagerald Vick earlier this week. Vick, however, played seven more minutes than Lightfoot in the first game since the move was made.

Alex Robinson finished with nine assists, passing coach Jamie Dixon for seventh place on TCU all-time list. Kenrich Williams moved into fifth place on TCU’s rebounding list, going ahead of Mickey McCarty.

TCU is 1-4 against top 10 teams this season. The Horned Frogs haven’t won a road game against a ranked opponent since 1998.

Kansas is now 16-2 all-time against TCU, and is a perfect 7-0 inside Allen Fieldhouse.

BIG PICTURE

Kansas earns a much-needed win after dropping its third Big 12 game this past weekend to Oklahoma State. The Jayhawks now sit in first place in the conference, one-half game ahead of Texas Tech.

TCU continues its slide since losing star Jaylen Fisher, whose knee injury in January sidelined him for the rest of the year.

Nebraska defeats Minnesota for third straight road win

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Sophomore Isaiah Roby led a balanced attack with a career-high 21 points and eight rebounds as Nebraska defeated Minnesota 91-85 on Tuesday night.

James Palmer Jr. had 19 points and nine assists for the Huskers (18-8, 9-4 Big Ten), who won for the sixth time in seven games. Anton Gill scored 12 points, while Glynn Watson Jr. and Isaac Copeland each scored 10 for Nebraska.

Nate Mason poured in a career-high 34 points and added six assists for the Golden Gophers (14-12, 3-10), who have lost six in a row. Jordan Murphy scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while freshman Isaiah Washington scored 10 points and dished out eight assists.

Nebraska ranks 13th out of 14 Big Ten teams in shooting percentage, but the Huskers came out firing. They hit nine of their first 15 shots from the floor, including 5 for 7 on 3-pointers, as they pulled out to a 23-18 lead.

That was all without a point from Palmer, who had averaged 25.2 points over his last six games. But he ran off seven straight points before Gill hit a transition layup and a 3 to push Nebraska’s lead to 37-22.

Washington hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut Nebraska’s halftime lead to 44-37. The Huskers shot 59 percent from the floor and hit 8 of 12 from 3-point range in the first half.

Mason almost single-handedly willed the Gophers back into the game in the second half. Trailing by eight, the senior guard hit three free throws, and after a Thomas Allen 3-pointer, Mason made a driving layup, dished to Bakary Konate for a dunk, and drained a 3 to cut Nebraska’s lead to 60-59 with 10 minutes to play.

Minnesota tied the game 62-all on a 3-point play by Michael Hurt, but Nebraska immediately answered with an 8-0 run to restore its cushion. Gill hit a pair of free throws during that run after Gophers coach Richard Pitino was assessed a technical foul for arguing with the officials.

Mason hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute to pull Minnesota to within four, and after a steal Washington had a chance to cut the deficit to one point but his 3-pointer was long. Palmer then hit four straight free throws to close it out.

BIG PICTURE

Nebraska: Since joining the Big Ten in 2011-12, the Huskers have one fourth-place finish and a combined .289 winning percentage in their other five seasons. This year’s club now stands alone in fourth place, and its five remaining opponents are a combined 21-40.

Minnesota: Coming off an overtime loss at No. 24 Michigan on Saturday, the Gophers again showed heart but were outgunned by a deeper, more athletic team. Minnesota felt the absence of starting forward Amir Coffey (shoulder). The Gophers also lost starting guard Dupree McBrayer, who has been battling leg injuries all season and didn’t play in the second half.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — Alize Johnson drilled a 3-pointer to open the scoring and drained another for the final score as he finished with 28 points to lead Missouri State to an 81-62 win over Indiana State on Tuesday night to halt a five-game skid.

Johnson nailed 5 of 9 from long range and finished making 9 of 15 from the field. He also had eight rebounds, five assists and four blocks. Jarred Dixon added 13 points and Jarrid Rhodes scored 11 for Missouri State (16-10, 6-7 Missouri Valley Conference). Tanveer Bhullar also had four of Missouri State’s 12 blocked shots, two shy of the school record set in 1990.

The Bears, who led throughout, jumped to a 9-0 lead and held a 36-25 halftime advantage. They pushed the lead to 64-50 after Johnson drained his third trey at the 8:31 mark. He quickly made another 3 and Missouri State cruised to the win.

Brenton Scott had 19 points for the Sycamores (11-14, 6-7).
