Missouri women dominate McKendree 80-30 in final exhibition game

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Women’s Basketball finished exhibition play in resounding fashion, using stifling defense and a balanced offensive attack to beat McKendree, 80-30, on Monday night at Mizzou Arena. The Tigers held the Bearcats to just 25 percent shooting, while shooting 45 percent from the field themselves to build the 50-point lead. Eleven different players scored for head coach Robin Pingeton, marking the second straight game in which at least 11 different members of the Black and Gold found the scoring column. Junior guard Sophie Cunningham (Columbia, Mo.) led the way, dropping 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Redshirt senior forward Kayla Michael (Cincinnati, Ohio) joined Cunningham in double figures, scoring 10 points, while also pulling down six rebounds.

Turning Point
The Tigers’ first quarter defense set the tone, as they were able to jump out to a 31-7 lead courtesy of a 22-2 run to close the frame. Mizzou came out in a full court trap, making life difficult on the Bearcats from the opening tip. The Tigers forced six turnovers in the early going, using pressure and quick hands to force McKendree into early mistakes. The turnovers led to easy offense for the Black and Gold, as the Tigers generated 10 points off of those errors. Mizzou’s stout defense held McKendree to just 25 percent shooting in the opening quarter.

Top Tigers
– Junior Sophie Cunningham (Columbia, Mo.) led the Tigers in scoring and in rebounding, putting in 13 points and nabbing seven rebounds in just 15 minutes played.

– Redshirt senior Kayla Michael (Cincinnati, Ohio) showed off her versatility, registering 10 points on 50 percent shooting, pulling down six rebounds and dishing out three assists.

– Redshirt sophomore Hannah Schuchts (Tallahassee, Florida) patrolled the paint all game long, registering four blocked shots during the game, which matched her career high. She last had four blocked shots against Indiana State (11/22/16).

Notes
– Mizzou scored 31 points in the first period of play, the most points in a quarter by any Tiger team in exhibition play during the Robin Pingeton era.

– Mizzou scored 48 points in the first half, just edging their performance last time out against Southwest Baptist, when the Tigers dropped 47 points.

– Frericks had two blocked shots in the game, her most since Mizzou played Texas in the NCAA Tournament in 2016. She added nine points and seven rebounds.

Tigers’ Michael Porter, Jr. on Oscar Robertson Trophy watch list

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Preseason accolades continue to come in for Mizzou Men’s Basketball freshman forward Michael Porter, Jr. (Columbia, Mo.), as the Tigers’ highly touted newcomer was named to the 2017-18 Oscar Robertson Trophy Preseason Watch List, it was announced on Monday by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA).

One of nine freshmen selected to the watch list from around the country, Porter’s addition to the 32-player group comes on the legs of his recognition as the Southeastern Conference’s Co-Preseason Player of the Year.

The award is to be presented to the national player of the year by its namesake at the NCAA Final Four in San Antonio. Members of the USBWA’s board of directors chose the players to be included on the list as contenders for the Oscar Robertson Trophy.

Widely considered the nation’s No. 1 recruit after his standout high school career, the current Tiger averaged an outstanding 36.2 points and 13.6 rebounds per game as a senior in 2016-17 at Nathan Hale High School in Seattle, Washington. Prior to his stint in the Northwest, Porter led Father Tolton Catholic High School to Columbia’s first high school state basketball championship in 54 years as a junior in 2015-16. The 6-10 forward posted averages of 28.5 points and 11.8 rebounds per game during that championship campaign.

Porter has additionally been named a preseason All-American by outlets such as ESPN (Oct. 23), Athlon Sports (Oct. 9), Blue Ribbon (Sept. 18) and NBC Sports (May 25).

The full watch list can be found here. All NCAA Division I players are eligible for postseason honors from the USBWA. For the ninth straight season, the USBWA will present an Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week each Tuesday beginning Dec. 12.

In mid-March, the USBWA will announce its 2017-18 All-America Team and, at that time, finalists will also be chosen for the player of the year. Once finalists are announced, the entire USBWA membership will vote for the winner of the Oscar Robertson Trophy.

Since the 1958-59 season, the USBWA has named a National Player of the Year. In 1998, the award was named in honor of the University of Cincinnati Hall of Famer and two-time USBWA Player of the Year Oscar Robertson. It is the nation’s oldest player of the year award and the only one named after a former player.

Mizzou’s Sherrils earns SEC Defensive Player of the Week honor

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou senior S Anthony Sherrils (Kansas City, Mo.) was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week, announced Monday by the league office. Sherrils had a pair of takeaways that led to scores to go along with six tackles in Mizzou’s 45-16 win over Florida last Saturday, its third consecutive win. This marks the first time that Sherrils has been honored with an SEC weekly honor in his career.

Sherrils recovered a muffed punt early in the first quarter against the Gators. Three plays later, Mizzou found the endzone to gain a lead that it did not relinquish. In the second quarter, Sherrils jumped a route and perfectly timed Florida QB Malik Zaire for an interception on an out-route. It was his first interception this season and third in his career. Mizzou’s offense promptly turned that pick into seven points with a Larry Rountree III touchdown run on the ensuing drive.

In the third quarter with Mizzou on top 28-6 and Florida knocking on the door on its first possession out of halftime, Sherrils again made a great play. On first and goal from the two-yardline, Sherrils broke through the right side and blew up a Lamical Perine run, likely saving a touchdown. Florida was forced backwards on the next two plays and was forced to kick a field goal as Mizzou began to run away with the game.

Mizzou will honor Sherrils and 17 other seniors Saturday at Memorial Stadium as it takes on Tennessee in big SEC East showdown. The game will kick at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN 1550 AM.

K-State’s Shelley named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week

MANHATTAN, Kan. – With a 25-yard interception return touchdown and three total passes defended in last week’s overtime victory at Texas Tech, Kansas State junior defensive back Duke Shelley picked up Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors, the conference office announced Monday.

The citation was the first in Shelley’s career and the fifth by a Wildcat this year, including the second of the defensive variety as Kendall Adams was honored following the Charlotte game. The Wildcats now have 48 player-of-the-week honors since 2011, the second most in the Big 12.

A product of Tucker, Georgia, Shelley picked off a third-quarter pass and returned it for a score, which was vital in helping the Wildcats earn a 42-35 overtime victory in Lubbock. It was the first road overtime victory in school history, while he helped the Wildcats secure their largest fourth-quarter comeback win under head coach Bill Snyder.

Shelley, who also had four tackles and two pass breakups, earned the second pick-six of his career (2016 vs. Oklahoma State) and recorded K-State’s nation-leading 111th non-offensive touchdown since 1999. He took over the Big 12 lead in passes defended with 11, while he ranks 14th nationally in the category thanks to five over the last two games alone.

Griffon soccer gets beat by No. 1 Central Missouri in MIAA championship game

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – For the third time this season, No. 1-ranked Central Missouri got the best of the Missouri Western soccer team as the Griffon lost 4-1 Sunday in the championshp game of the MIAA Tournament.

MWSU falls to 17-4 this season, while the Jennies remain undefeated at 21-0.

UCM jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two goals in the first half and another just a little more than a minute into the second half. Then Sydney Cluck scored her ninth goal of the season, a shot from the left side of the box off a free kick. Central Missouri added another goal in the 79th minute.

Sarah Lyle finished with 11 saves in goal. The Griffons were held to just three shots in the game and two on goal while Central Missouri took 35 total shots, 15 on goal.

The Griffons advanced farther in the MIAA tournament than any team in program history and are poised for their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Championships.

Missouri Western will now wait until Monday to find out its NCAA Central Region tournament seed and destination. The Griffons were ranked third in last week’s regional poll. A selection show watch party will be held at 5 p.m. on Monday in the Hall of Fame room inside Spratt Memorial Stadium.

Griffons give up late score, lose at Emporia State 30-27

EMPORIA, Kan. – Despite career rushing highs by quarterback Dom Marino and running back Shamar Griffith and an offensive output of 449 yards, the Missouri Western football team (4-6) fell 30-27 to Emporia State (5-5) Saturday. MWSU outgained ESU by 126 yards and recorded five sacks for 20 yards.

CHANGING OF TIDES
A holding call at the one-yard line negated a Shamar Griffith touchdown that would have given Missouri Western a two touchdown lead. A few plays later, the Griffons settled for a 39-yard field goal to take a 20-10 lead. On the next drive, the defense forced a three and out but a fumbled punt return by Jonathan Owens recovered by the Hornets kept them alive. Emporia State cashed in their opportunity with a reverse pass that went for a 31-yard touchdown pass. The momentum change allowed ESU to score 13 unanswered points.

GAME OF INCHES
Down 23-20 in the fourth quarter, Dom Marino stumbled down to the Emporia State 2-yard line and left Missouri Western just inches short of a first down. On fourth and inches, Marino found a narrow crease and dove in for a touchdown to give the Griffons a 27-23 advantage. Later in the quarter, ESU quarterback Braxton Marstall called his own number on a fourth and two. A second effort allowed Marstall to gain the first down by a quarter of a football after an official’s measurement. The Hornets threw the game-winning, two-yard touchdown pass just three plays later with 1:12 left in the fourth quarter.

BOTTLED UP
The Griffon defense bottled up the Emporia State offense as it allowed just 62 yards on the ground and 323 yards of total offense. MWSU sacked ESU five times for 20 yards. Tyrell Robison came away with three sacks for 11 yards. Dennis McKinney was credited with two sacks for nine yards and a forced fumble. Jabbar Miles led Missouri Western with nine tackles.

UP NEXT
Missouri Western returns to Spratt Stadium on Nov. 11 as it host rival Northwest Missouri State. The senior day kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

No. 8 Bearcats fall to No. 6 Fort Hays State for second straight loss

By David Boyce – Northwest Athletics

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State football team saw the MIAA title slip away midway through the fourth quarter on a big pass play by Fort Hays State.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Northwest gave up a 66-yard touchdown play when Fort Hays quarterback Jacob Mezera connected with Harley Hazlett over the middle, and Hazlett sprinted into the end zone.

The score put Northwest behind 10 points with 9:25 left. Backup quarterback Jonathan Baker came in for Northwest and put together a gutsy drive that mixed his scrambling ability with a couple of nice passes.

Baker led a touchdown drive that helped pull the Bearcats to within three with 3:19 left.

“I appreciated coach Wright for believing in me there and letting me come in and see what I can do,” said Baker, who completed 12 of 19 passes for 111 yards.

Northwest defense forced a three and out, putting the ball back in the hands of the Bearcats at their 22 with 1:39 left.

“I am proud of the fact that they fought,” Northwest coach Rich Wright said. “It reflects their character. We didn’t play a clean game by any stretch, but they played hard versus a week ago when I was disappointed at times at their effort. We just came up short.”

Unfortunately, Northwest couldn’t complete the comeback and lost 13-12. An interception by Fort Hays with 1:05 left sent the Bearcats to their second straight loss. Still, there was plenty of drama in the final 20 seconds.

Northwest got the ball at its 37 with 9 seconds left. Northwest completed a pass to Jordan Bishop to the Fort Hays 44 and the Tigers were called for targeting. Unfortunately, Jarrod Bishop, Jordan’s twin brother ran onto the field and was whistled for an unsportsmanlike penalty so the ball stayed at the 44 instead of moving to the 29 and setting up a potential game-winning field goal.

“We get the targeting call and are going to get a 15-yard penalty and have a chance to kick a field goal,” Wright said. “His brother made a mistake. You can’t lose your composure in that situation. He negates the 15-yard penalty by creating a 15-yard penalty of his own. That is part of understanding the moment. It is something I addressed with him right afterward. Not that we would make it or not make it, but you have an opportunity.”

It left Northwest with one opportunity for a Hail Mary touchdown pass. Fort Hays intercepted the pass near the goal line to end the game.

Northwest dropped to 8-2. Fort Hays improved to 10-0 and left Maryville with the MIAA crown.

The Bearcats will play for their playoff lives next Saturday at rival Missouri Western. Northwest needs to win and then wait for selection Sunday to learn if it is one of seven teams in its region to make the Division II playoffs.

“I am not going to focus on the playoffs next week,” Wright said. “We are going to focus on Missouri Western because that is all we are guaranteed. This could be our final football game. We are going to treat it like our last football game, and it is going to get our full attention.”

Like the previous week, Northwest struggled on offense. The only time when the Bearcats put together a good drive occurred after Fort Hays took a 13-3 lead with under 10 minutes left.

Faced with a 10-point deficit, Baker took over and engineered a 14-play, 75-yard drive the ended with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Baker to Quincy Woods. It was the first touchdown since the first quarter of last week’s game for Northwest.

“I felt we needed to make a switch,” Wright said. “Zach was pressing a little bit. I decided I wanted to give Jonathan a shot and he did a great job executing when we needed it. It is a credit to him and his preparation the last 10 weeks.”

The Bearcats tacked on two more points with 13 seconds left when Fort Hays purposely took a safety to have a free kick.

Because of stellar defense by both teams, the only offense of consequence came from the placekickers. Less than a minute into the second quarter, Northwest freshman Parker Sampson booted a 28-yard field goal in his first collegiate attempt and gave the Bearcats a 3-0 lead.

Fort Hays immediately responded on its next drive. The Tigers moved the ball 34 yards, setting up a 48-yard attempt from senior Brandon Brown. He easily nailed the long field goal with at least 10 yards to spare. His game-tying field goal came with 10:59 left in the second quarter.

For the rest of the second quarter, neither team came close to scoring again. Fort Hays had the best opportunity. In the Tigers’ next drive after their field goal, they started at Northwest’s 47. But they could only move the ball four yards and was forced to punt.

Statistically, Northwest narrowly won the battle, picking up five first downs and 125 total yards. The Tigers had three first downs and 75 yards of total offense.
