No. 3 Bearcats down Central Missouri for second straight MIAA Tournament title

nwmsuBy David Boyce

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – No drama. No last-second shots. Northwest Missouri State simply took control of the MIAA Tournament championship game in the latter stages of the first half and efficiently put an end to Central Missouri’s season.

The Bearcats repeated as MIAA Tournament champions with a 69-61 victory Sunday afternoon at Municipal Auditorium. Central Missouri needed to win to keep its season alive.

“This was great,” said Northwest senior Zach Schneider said. “Mac (Northwest coach Ben McCollum) told us that since the tournament moved here, no team has won back-to-back titles. It is another thing to add to our list. I am just glad we were able to do it in front of a huge Bearcat crowd. That was awesome.”

Northwest, 29-1, will now return to Maryville, Mo., and at 9:30 p.m. Sunday, get confirmation that it will play host to the eight-team Central Regional, which starts Saturday. The Division II Tournament selection show will be streamed on NCAA.com.

“This atmosphere was great,” said junior Brett Dougherty, who finished with nine points and seven rebounds. “We are going to see the same thing at our place. It should be a lot of fun.”

In the Bearcats’ first two wins in the MIAA Tournament, Northwest needed to make plays on offense and defense until the final seconds to come away with four-point victories over Lincoln University and Missouri Southern.

“The first two games were unbelievably difficult, and even this game was tough at the start,” McCollum said. “Our kids stayed focused and now it is on to the next.”

Northwest had much more control of the second half this time around. The Mules scored the first basket in the second half to cut their deficit to 40-30.

The Bearcats scored the next five points on a basket by Dougherty and a three-pointer by freshman Ryan Welty.

“It felt really good,” said Welty, who was 3-for-3 on three-point shots. “We got a lot of shots off. The guards did a good job driving and kicking out. It felt good to see them go down today.”

Northwest grabbed too many offensive rebounds and were making too many shots to let Central chip away. In fact, the Bearcats expanded their advantage over the next several minutes.

When Welty hit another three-pointer with 12:50 left, the Bearcats held a commanding 59-36 lead. At that point, Northwest was content to take time off the clock. They only scored seven points over the next 11 minutes. Central kept playing hard and closed to 66-55, but only 1:50 remained in the game.

“It is a lot less nerve-wracking,” Schneider said. “It was nice we were able to relax a little bit in the last 10 minutes and get our legs under us.”

In the final 10 minutes of the first half, Northwest put together it best offensive stretch in the tournament. The execution in those minutes turned a close game into a 40-28 halftime lead for the Bearcats.

“I didn’t think we came out great, and Central did come out energetic,” McCollum said. “We slowly found our rhythm offensively. We are able to expose some things they were doing defensively. We guarded them well.”

Central took an early 11-6 lead. Northwest scored the next seven points and grabbed its first lead at 13-11 and the fun began. Over the next 3 minutes, the lead changed hands four times.

The Mules took a 14-13 lead on a three-pointer. Northwest responded with a basket by Pitts. Central went back in front with another three-pointer. Pitts put Northwest back in front with a three-pointer, making it 18-17.

Northwest didn’t stop there. The Bearcats solidified their advantage with a four-point play from Schneider, making it 22-17. The Mules never recovered.

“It set the tone,” Schneider said. “We kind of came out slow. I think that was the turning point in the game. From then on, we rode that wave and really played well the rest of the way.”

The Bearcats continued to make baskets at a faster rate than Central. When senior Anthony Woods scored a two-point field goal, Northwest held it first double-digit lead at 35-24 with 4:19 left. Three minutes later, the lead ballooned to 40-26 when Pitts nailed a three-pointer just before the shot-clock buzzer.

“We had a good stretch there where we out-rebounded them, getting O-boards and easy buckets,” Welty said. “It didn’t put the game away, but it gave us an advantage in the second half.”

Northwest shot 53.3 percent from the field and pulled down nine more rebounds, which contributed to the Bearcats taking eight more shots.

“Winning this tournament means a lot,” Dougherty said. “For us, winning a tournament, is a whole other deal. Putting games together like this in a tough conference is pretty cool.”

Mizzou baseball walks off with the series finale against UIC 11-10

riggertMissouriCOLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Baseball snagged the series sweep with an 11-10 victory over the UIC Flames after a walk-off solo home run by freshman OF Kameron Misner (Poplar Bluff, Mo.) to deep right center field on a 2-0 pitch in the bottom of the ninth. Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.), Brian Sharp (Liberty, Mo.) and Chris Cornelius (St. Louis, Mo.) each tabbed a homer, marking the first time Mizzou has tallied four home runs in a game since the series finale against UIC last season on March 6 when Mizzou crushed four long balls.

Mizzou has now won 10 in a row, matching the longest streak by the Tigers since 2012. The Tigers are now 10-1 on the year, matching their best start to a season since 1985 (also opened 2015 with a 10-1 mark). UIC falls to 4-6 on the year.

Sharp had a great game for Mizzou, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two walks. He made the transition to the mound in the eighth, limiting UIC to just one hit while fanning a batter as well. The righty earned his first win since March 4 of last season in a 7-4 victory over UIC.

Andy Toelken (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) found himself in a bind early in the contest putting three runners on after a hit batter, a single to left and a walk. UIC pushed the first run of the day across the plate with a single lined to center field. The Flames added an additional run off a fielder’s choice to take a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first.

Junior Nelson Mompierre (Miami, Fla.) drew a walk to get the momentum rolling for Mizzou in the bottom of the third. With a runner on, Cornelius approached the dish and blasted a two-run bomb over the left field wall to make it a tie ball game. Juniors Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.) and Matt Berler (Hoover, Ala.) knocked a pair of singles but remained stranded after a groundout to end the inning. Berler has now reached base safely in eight consecutive games, dating back to the beginning of the season.

Sharp blasted an opposite shot homer to left field in the bottom of the fourth to put Mizzou ahead, 3-2. UIC climbed back on top in the top of the next inning after a two-run shot to left off the bat of Cody Bohanek. The Flames tacked on a pair of runs after back-to-back solo shots in the sixth inning by Scott Ota and Bowen Ogata. However, sophomore LHP Ty Shoaff (Akron, Ohio) entered the game and retired three consecutive batters to get out of the inning.

Mizzou rallied in the bottom of the sixth to put two runners on base after a rip up the middle by Alex Samples (Bridgeport, Texas) and a free pass to Sharp. Harris followed with a double smoked down the left field line for his 10th hit of the season, plating two for Mizzou and making it a 6-5 ball game, UIC.

The offensive production continued for Mizzou as Bond smacked a two-out single through the left side for the game tying RBI in the bottom of the seventh. Sharp sustained the hitting brigade with single up the middle to put Mizzou ahead. With runners on the corners, Harris stepped to the plate and crushed a three-run bomb over the center field wall for his first homer of the season, giving Mizzou the 10-6 lead.

UIC did not go down without a fight as the Flames plated four in the top of the eighth after a five-hit inning including a game tying double by Ricardo Ramirez. Sharp pitched a lights-out ninth inning to send the game to the bottom of the ninth, paving way for the walkoff homer by leadoff batter Misner. He went 0-for-4 in the game before working a 2-0 count in his final at-bat and roping a fastball through the pine trees over the fence in right center.

Mizzou will play its first home midweek games this week at Taylor Stadium, hosting Eastern Illinois Tuesday and Western Carolina Wednesday.

K-State women lose to Baylor in Big 12 semifinals

riggertKansasStateOKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Nina Davis took little credit for her 24-point outburst.

That, she said, should go to Kristy Wallace. Baylor’s point guard set a Big 12 Tournament record with 15 assists to help the second-ranked Bears defeat No. 24 Kansas State 88-71 on Sunday in the semifinals.

“She gets pretty much all the credit, 99.1 percent,” Davis said. “The other half is us finishing the shot. We go as Kristy goes. All season long, she’s been our Energizer Bunny. She never gets tired.”

Wallace matched her career high for assists in a game.

“She is just a great player,” Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said. “She can play through fouls. She can play through blood. She can play through a turnover, and she just is somebody you would sure like to be on the receiving end of her passes because she just gives it to you where you can finish.”

Alexis Prince and Kalani Brown each scored 18 points for Baylor (30-2), which goes for its seventh straight tournament championship Monday night when it plays West Virginia, which defeated No. 12 Texas 62-59 in the other semifinal.

Davis said she won’t take the opportunity for granted.

“Winning never gets old,” she said. “If I’m ever in a position where winning championships becomes the same-old same-old, it’s time for me to stop playing basketball.”

Karyla Middlebrook scored 20 points, Kindred Wesemann had 15 points and Breanna Lewis added 14 points and 11 rebounds for Kansas State (22-10), which had won four of its previous five games.

Baylor led 52-38 at halftime behind 16 points from Davis. Prince had 15 points on 5-for-5 shooting at the break, and the Lady Bears shot 59 percent from the floor in the first half. Baylor’s largest lead was 22 points in the second half.

Kansas State’s biggest concern came in the closing minutes when Wesemann, an All-Big 12 first-team performer, hurt her right arm. Coach Jeff Mittie said after the game that he’s not sure how she’s doing.

“They’re looking at her right now,” he said. “I think that the best thing I can tell you is we’re hoping that it’s a little pulled muscle, but I ask the doctors not to coach and they ask me not to be doctor. So I try to abide by that.”

BIG PICTURE

Kansas State won’t be penalized for losing at a neutral site to a team that has steamrolled most of its competition. Baylor beat Kansas State by 30 on Dec. 29 and by 42 on Jan. 25. The Lady Bears have done the same to numerous good teams this season. They beat No. 19 Oklahoma 103-64 last Monday.

Baylor added another quality win to its resume and boosted its case for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Bears scored at least 88 points for the third straight game. It was Baylor’s 11th victory over a ranked team this season.

POLL IMPLICATIONS

Kansas State’s loss came against a better opponent than most of the teams in the poll near the Wildcats will have, so they shouldn’t be affected much. Baylor solidified its No. 2 ranking.

STAT LINES
Baylor made 16 of 17 free throws, while Kansas State made 11 of 25.

“We had our opportunities,” Mittie said. “We were doing a great job of getting to the free throw line. We just weren’t converting.”

TIP-INS

Kansas State committed just eight turnovers. Baylor’s Brown had 12 rebounds. … Baylor made 6 of 10 3-pointers. … Middlebrook’s point total was her second-highest of the season.

QUOTABLE

Mulkey, on playing for another championship: “I get a paycheck. That’s what we’re supposed to do.”

UP NEXT

Kansas State will likely play in the NCAA Tournament.

Baylor will play West Virginia in the Big 12 championship game on Monday.
