Mizzou women cruise past Tennessee-Martin

riggertMissouriCOLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Women’s Basketball used a well-balanced offensive attack to run past Tennessee-Martin, 80-69, on an icy Saturday afternoon in Mid-Missouri. Four players scored in double-figures, marking the sixth time Mizzou has accomplished that this season, as the Tigers shot 27-for-56 from the floor and held off a comeback attempt from the Skyhawks in the fourth quarter for the win. Mizzou improves to 9-3 on the season.

Senior guard Sierra Michaelis (Mercer, Mo.) poured in a game-high 23 points to lead Mizzou. The reigning SEC Co-Player of the Week has reached the 20-point plateau in two of the last three games. She drained five three-pointers Saturday and moved to third all-time in program history for career three-pointers made with 143 triples.

Sophomore guard Sophie Cunningham (Columbia, Mo.) tallied 21 points, six rebounds and three assists and sophomore Cierra Porter (Columbia, Mo.) posted 19 points and 14 rebounds to secure her fifth double-double of the season. The 14 boards for Porter were one shy of a career-high. Senior Lindsey Cunningham (Columbia, Mo.) added 13 points, five rebounds and two assists in the win.

Mizzou dominated the first half of play thanks to Sophie Cunningham and Porter. Together, they were responsible for Mizzou’s first 14 points. The Tigers raced out to a 25-17 lead after a bucket down low from Cunningham.

Mizzou went on to outscore UT-Martin, 26-4, in the opening half of action. The dominance in the paint allowed the Tigers to string together a 13-3 second-quarter run and build a 16-point advantage. The Cunningham-Porter duo combined for 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting with 11 rebounds and two assists in the first half as Mizzou entered halftime up 43-27.

Coming out in the second half, Michaelis caught fire, connecting on back-to-back triples to get Mizzou’s offense going. She stayed hot, finishing with five 3-pointers in the third quarter alone.

UT-Martin cut the lead to just nine points midway through the fourth quarter, but Mizzou was able to hang on behind efficient free throw shooting and stout defense, limiting UT-Martin to just 2-for-9 shooting down the stretch. The Tigers finished 18-of-23 from the foul line.

Mizzou will be back in action Monday against UC-Riverside at 7 p.m. inside Mizzou Arena.

Battery charge dismissed against KU’s Carlton Bragg

riggertKULAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Authorities have dismissed a battery charge against Kansas forward Carlton Bragg Jr. and charged the woman who accused him of shoving her into a stairwell.

Bragg, a 20-year-old sophomore, was suspended indefinitely from the Kansas basketball team after he was arrested Friday. It wasn’t immediately clear whether he’ll be reinstated.

The Douglas County district attorney’s office said Wednesday in a release that charge was dismissed after law enforcement reviewed surveillance video.

That video showed that before a man “forcefully” shoved a woman away from him and caused her to fall backward into an ascending staircase, the woman shoved, slapped and struck the man and put her hands around his neck.

The DA’s office says Saleeha Soofi faces one count of battery. It’s unclear whether she has a lawyer.

Kansas head coach Bill Self says Bragg is no longer suspended from the team, and that “I’m proud of the way Carlton has handled this situation, considering all the negative publicity he has received both locally and nationally.  He knew all the facts and knew that he needed to refrain from comment while the investigation took place. We’re glad this situation is resolved.”

Bragg himself said that “This has been a difficult and humiliating experience for me, and I’m glad it’s over. I appreciate the authorities taking the time to get this right. I also appreciate the support of my teammates and coaches, and I’m glad I can put this behind me and move forward.”

Missouri Western’s Williamson announces football coaching staff

riggertMissouriWesternST. JOSEPH – Missouri Western head football coach Matt Williamson has announced the addition of seven members of the 2017 Griffon Football coaching staff.

The staff includes a range of experience from different areas and different levels of football coaching. Williamson’s first staff will include two former members of the Griffon Football team and three Missouri Western graduates.

Williamson’s 2017 assistant coaches will include: Chet Pobolish – offensive coordinator, Patrick St. Louis – run game coordinator/offensive line, Ryan Watts – wide receivers, Colin McQuillan – running backs, Michael Walton – defensive coordinator, Scorpio Horn – defensive line and Justin Richter – defensive backs.

“All the pieces of the puzzle fell right into place. We have a phenomenal staff,” Williamson said. They are high character family men that work day in and day out with passion and energy. I wanted very a very experienced and successful staff of recruiters – that’s the bloodline of our program. I can’t wait to get going, the staff is pumped and ready to go.”

Chet Pobolish returns to the MIAA after a successful playing career at Emporia State (1996-99). The four-time All-MIAA wide receiver comes to Missouri Western after spending six seasons in various positions on the Southeastern Louisiana University football staff, including offensive coordinator for two seasons. Prior to Southeastern State, Pobolish was the special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach at Delta State from 2007-11.  He began his coaching career at Emporia State where he worked with quarterbacks and wide receivers.

Like Williamson, Michael Walton comes to Missouri Western from Stephen F. Austin where he was the special teams coordinator and safeties coach since 2014. The former Griffon offensive lineman was offensive coordinator at Morehead State for the past two seasons after serving as offensive line coach since 2013. St. Louis began his coaching career as a student assistant at Missouri Western before becoming a graduate assistant at Morehead State. He coached offensive line for one season, 2012, at Olivet College before returning to Morehead in 2013.

Scorpio Horn also makes his return to Missouri Western. The former Griffon defensive and offensive lineman spent the past three seasons as head coach at William Chrisman High School in Independence, Missouri. Horn was defensive coordinator for three seasons at Park Hill South High School before moving to the Independence School District. The 2005 Missouri Western graduate’s brother, Joe Horn, played wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs and New Orleans Saints.

Colin McQuillan transitions from graduate assistant to full-time assistant on the Griffon coaching staff.  McQuillan served as a defensive graduate assistant for two years at Missouri Western after high school coaching stops at KC Wyandotte and Riverside High School. McQuillan was a student assistant at Missouri Western before receiving his bachelor’s degree in 2012.

Justin Richter returns to the area after graduating from the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth, Kansas in 2010. Richter was most recently a defensive graduate assistant at the University of California-Berkley. He also coached at West Texas A&M, University of New Mexico, Angelo State and New Mexico Military Institute.

Ryan Watts was most recently an offensive assistant at Abilene Christian. Prior to joining the ACU staff, Watts was a graduate assistant and assistant director of football operations at Stephen F. Austin.

Williamson also announced the addition of Kedrick Harrison as a graduate assistant. Harrison will work with defensive ends. Some changes to existing graduate assistants’ duties were also announced. Brian Chiles will now work with tight ends after spending the 2016 season working with running backs. Derek Fulton will remain working with quarterbacks while Chance Alberswerth remains with the linebackers.

Mizzou’s Michaelis earns SEC Co-Player of the Week honor

riggertMissouriCOLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou senior guard Sierra Michaelis (Mercer, Mo.) was named Southeastern Conference Co-Player of the Week, announced Tuesday by the league office. It is Michaelis’ first career SEC weekly honor and the first received by any Mizzou player this season.

Michaelis piloted Mizzou to two victories last week averaging 19.0 points, 6.0 steals and 5.0 rebounds per game. She poured in a season-high 24 points to lead all scorers in a 72-60 win over SIU-Edwardsville. Michaelis made a career-high six three-pointers in the process, connecting from distance on Mizzou’s first three possessions to begin the game. She is now tied for fifth in program history for career three-pointers made with 138 triples.

The senior shot 50 percent from the floor to fuel the Tigers offensively in the win. She added five rebounds and three steals to complete an all-around effort.

On Friday, Michaelis captained Mizzou to a gritty 64-57 win over Wichita State. After exploding for 24 points against SIUE, she sparked the Tigers’ victory on the defensive end vs. the Shockers. Most notably, Michaelis recorded a career-high nine steals, which is the most by any SEC player in a single game this season. She’s one of four Division I players to accomplish that feat in a game thus far and the first Mizzou player to do so since Tracy Franklin in 2001.

Michaelis finished with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists in the win. She’s now scored in double figures six times this season. Mizzou is 5-1 in those contests. Michaelis shared Tuesday’s honor with Texas A&M’s Anriel Howard.

Mizzou returns to the court on Saturday for an 11 a.m. tilt with Tennessee-Martin at Mizzou Arena. The Tigers then wrap up the nonconference slate with a home matchup vs. UC-Riverside and a road trip to Saint Louis.

Kansas football coach David Beaty gets extension, raise

riggertKUUniversity of Kansas head football coach David Beaty has signed a two-year extension that takes him through the 2021 season. The extension elevates his guaranteed annual income to $1.6 million the first year, increasing by $100,000 in each succeeding year.

“This shows our appreciation for Coach Beaty, his staff and our players,” said KU Athletics Director Sheahon Zenger. “I have enjoyed watching their progress during this season. We want to capitalize on the momentum we all saw as the season came to a close. This reflects our belief in Coach Beaty’s leadership, and the energy and enthusiasm that we see every day from him and his players.”

The extension includes additional incentive payments for achievements including conference championships, bowl victories and coach-of-the-year honors.

Beaty last month completed his second season as KU’s head coach with a compensation package worth $800,000 per year.

“I am appreciative of Dr. Zenger and our administration’s show of support,” said Beaty. “He and his staff have gone above and beyond to give us everything we need to build our program. Our staff and players have worked diligently to lay a strong foundation for the years to come. While we have certainly made some progress, we still have work to do to get to where we ultimately want to be and we look forward to continuing to take on that challenge. I am excited about the future of this program and am very honored to be the man leading it.”
