MIAA honors Northwest’s Soy as top male student-athlete, Tjeerdsma inducted into hall of fame

NWMSU Sports Information

The MIAA awarded Northwest Missouri State University’s Jake Soy as the conference’s top male student-athlete, and former head football coach Mel Tjeerdsma was inducted into the MIAA Hall of Fame during the conference’s annual awards celebration Thursday, June 9, at the Downtown Marriott.

Soy is the fifth Bearcat to earn the Ken B. Jones Award in the last 10 years and second in a row. Soy was an All-MIAA First Team selection, tying the MIAA’s career record of 40 touchdown receptions. He earned an Academic Excellence Scholarship and earned full waiver of out-of-state tuition rates based on his performance in the classroom. He was a Second-team Academic All-American as awarded by CoSIDA, and he was a First-Team All-District. In the community, Soy has been involved in several organizations.

Soy joins Myles Burnsides (2010, football), Josh Lamberson (2006, football), Clint Prange (2005, track and field) and Tucker Woolsey (2002, track and field) as Northwest honorees.

Central Missouri’s Lindsay Lettow, a track and field athlete won the Ken B. Jones Award honoring the top female student-athlete.

Tjeerdsma was one of 11 individuals and six national championship teams inducted into MIAA Hall of Fame as the Class of 2011. Tjeerdsma, who retired in December after coaching the Bearcats for 17 seasons, elevated the Northwest football program to one of the greatest in the history of Division II.

Four years after his inaugural season with the team in 1994, Northwest became the first NCAA Division II program to finish a season 15-0. The Bearcats won back-to-back national championships in 1998 and 1999 – the University’s first national titles in any sport. Northwest added a third championship in 2009 that capped an unprecedented run of five national championship game appearances that began in 2005. The Bearcats were 76-12 in those five seasons.

Among his peers in Division II, Tjeerdsma is third on the active wins list (242) and has tallied more postseason victories than any other coach in Division II history. He led Northwest to the playoffs 13 times in the last 15 seasons, sports a 32-10 overall postseason record and is the program’s all-time winningest coach.

His teams also won 12 conference championships in the last 15 seasons. Northwest won 41 consecutive conference games from 1997-2001, a record that stood until his squad surpassed it in 2010.

Other inductees were Ray Armstead, William “Bill” Cable, Carla Eades, Jorja Hoehn, Pat Lipira, Brian Moorman, Lynn Nance, Ron Nunnelly, Rod Smith, and Ron Zetcher along with Southwest Missouri State’s 1963 men’s golf national championship team, Southwest Missouri State’s 1974 men’s cross country national championship team, Central Missouri’s 1984 men’s basketball national championship squad, Central Missouri’s 1984 women’s basketball national title team, Southeast Missouri State’s 1984 men’s cross country national championship team and Southeast Missouri State’s 1985 men’s indoor track & field national title squad.

KU promotes Wimberly to Pass Coordinator/Safeties Coach

by KU Sports Information

Kansas head football coach Turner Gill announced Friday that assistant coach Robert Wimberly has been promoted to Pass Coordinator of the Jayhawk defense. Wimberly, who is entering his second year with the KU program, will continue serving as the safeties coach in addition to his new duties.

“Robert is a dynamic teacher of the game of football,” said Gill, who is beginning his second season at the helm of the Jayhawk program. “He possesses outstanding organizational skills and is a phenomenal recruiter. Robert has a great presence about him and I definitely consider him to be one of top young coaches in the nation.”

Wimberly is in his second season coaching the safeties at Kansas after spending the 2009 season on Gill’s staff at Buffalo, where he worked with the linebackers. While at Buffalo Wimberly worked with a defense which ranked 42nd in the NCAA allowing just 342.67 yards per game in 2009.

Prior to his time with the Bulls, Wimberly spent five seasons at Liberty (2004-08) working with the linebackers, as well as serving as the program’s director of high school relations. He started his coaching career as a defensive quality control assistant at Wisconsin under Barry Alvarez in 2002. He was a graduate assistant for the Badgers in 2003 before earning a full-time job at Liberty.

Wimberly was a four-year letterwinner at Alabama A&M, suffering a season-ending neck injury his senior season. He graduated from Alabama A&M with a degree in science and hospitality management in 2002. He then earned a master’s degree in educational policy and administration from Wisconsin in 2005.

by MU Sports Information

Thanks to a successful 2010-11 season, the University of Missouri women’s tennis team has garnered an invitation to participate in the prestigious Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kickoff Weekend for the first time in school history .  The Tigers, who went 12-10 last season and finished with a final ITA ranking of No. 73, will play in 2011-12 under the direction of new Head Coach Sasha Schmid, who came to MU from Stetson University.

The Tigers were one of 60 schools to be invited to participate in the tournament, with the opening weekend of play taking place on Jan. 27-28 at 15 different on-campus locations.  Four teams will participate at each location, and 15 teams will advance to play in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, slated for Feb. 10-13 at Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.

Mizzou will play in Athens, Ga., as part of the Georgia invitational.  The #4-seeded Tigers will square off against host and #1-seed Georgia on Friday, January 27th at 1 p.m. (central time), and they will play either #2 Fresno State or #3 Florida International the next morning at 8 a.m. (central).  Whichever school wins both of their matches will advance to the national championships.

The invitation marks the first in school history to the prominent event.

“I’m very proud and excited for our girls to have this great opportunity,” said Schmid, who began at Mizzou on a permanent basis on June 1st.  “I think it’s a tribute to the success of the team last season and all the hard work they put in.  That laid the foundation for this type of opportunity, so we’ll be very eager to see how we stack up to some of the nation’s best teams right away,” Schmid said.

by KSU Sports Information

King, who was also named to the Big 12 All-Freshman team, was a two-time Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honoree.

Players have until Aug. 15 to agree to terms with the organization which drafted them or they must re-enter the draft the following season.

Murray, a right-handed pitcher from Overland Park, Kan., was taken with the 421st overall pick by the Philadelphia Phillies. Murray recorded 33 strikeouts in only 40.1 innings pitched, and allowed a .242 opponents batting average.

In his career, Murray went 6-9 with a 3.89 ERA in 80 games, and all but two were out of the bullpen. He recorded 11 saves and 108 strikeouts in 111 innings. His 11 saves are fourth all-time in the KU record books, while his 80 appearances are good for fourth all-time.

Walz, a senior right-handed pitcher out of Omaha, Neb., was taken by the Oakland Athletics with the 466th overall selection. He leaves the Jayhawk program as one of the best pitchers in school history. In 2011, he led the team in wins, going 6-5 in 14 starts with 85 strikeouts in 90 2/3 innings. Walz finished the season with 3.97 ERA, while holding the opposition to a .241 average. He was named All-Big 12 Honorable Mention for the second time in his career.

In his illustrious career, Walz holds the school records in innings pitched (328 1/3), games started (50), strikeouts (307), and tied the record for career wins (26). He was a 2009 All-Big 12 second team selection and was named Preseason All-Big 12 in 2010. He was also a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection and was twice named conference pitcher of the week in his career.

Poppe, a right-handed pitcher from Girard, Kan., was taken by the Tampa Bay Rays with the 1,140th overall pick. The sophomore righty started 13 games for KU this year, and appeared in one game out of the bullpen. He finished the season with a 3-6 record, with an ERA of 3.66, and was second on the team in both innings pitched (71 1/3) and strikeouts (47). Despite the 3-6 record, Poppe recorded quality starts against then-No. 1 TCU on Feb. 22 and No. 4 Texas on April 23, which was KU’s last Big 12 win of the season.

In his career, the sophomore pitcher appeared in 34 games, starting 22 with a 6-10 record, and an ERA of 4.40 and 78 strikeouts in 133 innings pitched. He is draft-eligible as a sophomore because he has already celebrated his 21st birthday.

In addition to the three current players drafted by Major League organizations, KU had three of its signees selected. Pitcher Cody Kukuk was taken by the Boston Red Sox in the seventh round (232 overall), outfielder Connor McKay was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 24th round (738 overall) and pitcher Robert Kahana was drafted by the Rockies in the 44th round (1,338 overall). All three players have until Aug. 15 to sign with their respective organizations.

All-Big 12 Baseball Awards Announced

by Big12Sports.com

Tyler Naquin (Texas A&M) and Taylor Jungmann (Texas) highlight the 2011 edition of the Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Baseball Awards. Naquin has earned Player of the Year honors, while Jungmann was the unanimous choice for Pitcher of the Year. Erich Weiss (Texas) and Zach Johnson (Oklahoma State) garner Freshman and Newcomer of the Year honors, respectively. Augie Garrido (Texas) and Rob Childress (Texas A&M) share Coach of the Year accolades.

The official All-Big 12 awards are selected by the league’s head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players.

This marks the third overall Player of the Year honor for the Aggies (Jose Duran, 2008 and Jason Tyner, 1998) while this is the sixth Pitcher of the Year recognition for the Longhorns (2010, 2007, 2006, 2004, 2002). Naquin and Jungmann are also unanimous All-Big 12 First Team selections.

Naquin leads the Big 12 in overall batting average on the season (.392) and paces the Conference with a .404 clip in league play. The sophomore’s 85 hits are best in the league while his 54 runs scored are also tops in the Big 12. The sophomore, who batted just .244 in his rookie campaign last season, compiled the league’s longest hitting streak of 2011, piecing together a 27-game hit streak from March 30-May 14. Naquin’s incredible streak left him second in the Texas A&M record books for the longest ever, just one behind R.J. Englert, who set the school record by hitting in 28 consecutive games in 1972. The Spring, Texas, native also held a streak of reaching base in 39-straight games. In Big 12 action, he also led the circuit in hits (42), runs scored (26) and was second with a .488 on-base percentage.

Jungmann is a perfect 12-0 on the season, leading the league in overall wins, ERA (0.95), strikeouts (109), opponent batting average (.167) and innings pitched (113.2). The junior has three shutouts and four complete games. His 14-straight victories dating back to the 2010 postseason mark the second-longest active win streak in the nation. The Longhorns are in the race to record the nation’s best ERA for the second-straight season while Jungmann has paced the NCAA in wins this season. He is a three-time 2011 Phillips 66 Big 12 Pitcher of the Week and is also a quarterfinalist for the 2011 Pitcher of the Year award. In the last six starts of the regular season, Jungmann allowed just four earned runs over 49 innings

In his first season in the Big 12 Conference, Johnson ranks third in the league with a .354 batting average after starting all 54 regular season games for the Cowboys. The transfer from Ohlone JC ranks second in home runs (11), second in RBI (56), third in runs scored (48), third in doubles (20), third in triples (six) and fifth in hits (72). Johnson is part of 18 newcomers on the Cowboys’ roster this season. He joins Tyler Mach (2006) as OSU’s only other Newcomer of the Year recipient.

Weiss finished the 2011 regular season campaign with the second-best batting average in the league at .370. In his rookie year, he posted the highest on-base percentage in the Conference with a .509 mark. The Brenham, Texas, native earned Newcomer of the Week honors on two occasions. He was a unanimous selection to the league’s inaugural All-Freshman Team.

Garrido and Childress both guided their respective squads to 19-8 league records to share the Big 12’s regular-season title. Garrido claims his sixth overall Coach of the Year accolade (2010, ’07, ’06, ’04, ’02) while Childress was awarded his second (2008). This marks just the second time Co-Coaches of the year have been honored (2007).
