Benton names Wayne Miller new softball coach

Benton High School announces Wayne Miller as head girls’ softball coach for the 2018-19 school year.

Miller has more than 40 years of experience in education and coaching. He began coaching softball at Benton High School as an assistant. After two years in that role, he became Bishop LeBlond’s first head softball coach where he coached for 15 years. During that time, Miller led the team to three district titles, one state runner-up finish and one MSHSAA state title.

During the past year, Miller assisted Benton as a volunteer coach for the softball program. He also has experience coaching baseball (28 years as an assistant) and girls’ basketball (5 years as head coach).

“Wayne was an excellent choice for Benton due to his knowledge of the sport, his commitment to the sport, and the fact he already knows the skill level of many of our present student athletes,” said Brett Goodwin, Benton High School.

The Board of Education approved the hire during Monday’s meeting.

Benton High School has hired Kevin Keeton as the school’s new head football coach.

Keeton comes to Benton after serving as an assistant coach at Winnetonka High School. He’s been a coach in the Suburban League for 19 years and has been a head coach at Belton High School and Oak Park High School.

Keeton graduate from Truman High School in 1995 and played football at William Jewell College.

Keeton will be the third head coach in three years at Benton. He replaces Ben Glidewell, who spent one season with the Cardinals and went 2-8. Matt Tabor was the head coach for nine years before stepping down after the 2016 season.

Brett Goodwin to replace Mike Ziesel as Benton’s AD

Benton High School has named Brett Goodwin as the schools next athletic director, as he will replace Mike Ziesel.

The Board of Education approved the hire Monday night and the announcement was made Tuesday.

Ziesel will retire at the end of the school year after serving as Benton’s AD for the past 15 years. He’s been in education for 42 years, which also included 19 years as the boys’ basketball coach of the Cardinals.

As Goodwin steps into his new role next season he will step out of another as he’s resigned as the girls’ basketball coach at Benton.

Goodwin just wrapped up his 17th season in charge of the Cardinals as they went 23-3 and lost in the Class 3 sectionals to Kearney. Goodwin won two Class 4 state championships in 2007 and 2016 and finishes with a record of 364-105 at Benton. He also spent three years at Wathena and went 60-10.

Benton girls, Lafayette boys each lose to Kearney in Class 4 sectionals

The Benton girls and Lafayette boys basketball teams each suffered a loss to Kearney in the Class 4 Sectionals at Liberty North High School Tuesday night.

Benton fell to Kearney 48-43 as the Cardinals end their season 23-3. Lafayette finishes the season 21-8 after losing to the Bulldogs 70-65.

In the girls game, Benton struggled early and fell behind 19-4 after the first quarter. The Cardinals trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half before pulling to within eight points, 24-16, at halftime.

Kearney extended its season to 34-20 after three quarter before Benton rallied and got within three points with 30 seconds to go, but that was as close as they’d get.

Gabby Fuller led the Cards with 13 points and Mia Henderson added 12.

The Lafayette boys played a back-and-forth game with Kearney for nearly three quarters. The Fighting Irish led 17-15 after one, trailed 30-29 at halftime and then Kearney took the lead for good midway through the third quarter.

The Bulldogs led 51-46 after three and extended their lead to as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter. Lafayette never got closer than four the rest of the way as they lost 70-65.

Diego Bernard led the Irish with 25 and Ike Book scored 22 points.
