Ryan Madison steps down as Lafayette girls’ basketball coach

Lafayette High School is already in search of new boys’ basketball coach and now they will have to look for a girls’ basketball coach as well.

Ryan Madison has stepped down as the head coach of the Fighting Irish to become the head girls’ basketball coach at Bolivar High School.

Madison spent eight years on the northside and he led the Lafayette girls to six consecutive winning seasons. They made two appearances in the district championship game and Madison finished 124-82 with the Irish and was 29-27 in MEC play.

Madison will take over a Bolivar team that went 17-9 this past season and lost to West Plains in the district semifinals.

Ryan Nichols, who spent just two years as they boys’ basketball coach at Lafayette, stepped down earlier this month to take the boys’ basketball job at West Platte High School.

Nichols leaving Lafayette to take over West Platte boys’ basketball program

Lafayette High School is now in search of a new boys’ basketball coach as Ryan Nichols has stepped down as the head coach of the Fighting Irish after just two seasons.

Nichols is leaving Lafayette to become the head boys’ basketball coach at West Platte High School.

Nichols came to LHS in 2016 after Chris Neff resigned to take the head boys’ basketball job at Staley High School.  Nichols spent the previous four years at Oak Park High School and also coached at DeKalb for three years.  He went 36-19 overall in his two season at Lafayette and 12-2 in MEC play.  The Fighting Irish captured two district championships but lost to Kearney in the Class 4 Sectional both seasons.

Nichols will try and turn around a West Platte program that struggled in 2017-2018 as the Blue Jays went just 3-20.

Benton girls, Lafayette boys each lose to Kearney in Class 4 sectionals

The Benton girls and Lafayette boys basketball teams each suffered a loss to Kearney in the Class 4 Sectionals at Liberty North High School Tuesday night.

Benton fell to Kearney 48-43 as the Cardinals end their season 23-3. Lafayette finishes the season 21-8 after losing to the Bulldogs 70-65.

In the girls game, Benton struggled early and fell behind 19-4 after the first quarter. The Cardinals trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half before pulling to within eight points, 24-16, at halftime.

Kearney extended its season to 34-20 after three quarter before Benton rallied and got within three points with 30 seconds to go, but that was as close as they’d get.

Gabby Fuller led the Cards with 13 points and Mia Henderson added 12.

The Lafayette boys played a back-and-forth game with Kearney for nearly three quarters. The Fighting Irish led 17-15 after one, trailed 30-29 at halftime and then Kearney took the lead for good midway through the third quarter.

The Bulldogs led 51-46 after three and extended their lead to as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter. Lafayette never got closer than four the rest of the way as they lost 70-65.

Diego Bernard led the Irish with 25 and Ike Book scored 22 points.
