Benton loses in OT to Bolivar in Class 4 Quarterfinals

BentonThe Benton girls’ basketball team fell short of a return trip to the Class 4 Final Four as they lost to Bolivar, 44-35, in overtime in their quarterfinal game at Liberty North High School Saturday afternoon.

The loss snaps the Cardinals 18-game win streak as their end the season with a 26-3 record.

Bolivar led 3-0 and 4-3 early on, but Benton scored five straight points and never trailed again until the 2:52 mark of the fourth quarter.

The Cardinals biggest lead was six in the first half and they led 11-8 after the first quarter, 23-20 at halftime and 29-25 at the end of the third quarter.

Benton went cold in the final 12 minutes.  Boliver used a 6-0 run in the fourth quarter to take a 33-31 lead before Daejah Bernard made two free throws with 47 seconds left in regulation and the game went to OT.

The Liberators scored all 11 points in the extra period from the foul line and Benton never had the lead as the Cardinals scored only six points in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Bernard led Benton with 11 points, while Mallory McAndrews and Mia Stillman scored six points each.

Bolivar improves to 26-4 and they’ll play two-time defending state champion Incarnate Word Academy in the semifinals at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday inside Mizzou Arena.

Mid-Buchanan falls to Scott County Central in Class 2 state championship

Mid-Buchanan2The Mid-Buchanan boys’ basketball team lost the Class 2 state championship game Saturday inside Mizzou Arena to Scott County Central 53-48.

It was the first state title game appearance for the Dragons as they end their season 30-2.

Mid-Buchanan struggled early and trailed by as many as 12 points, 21-9, in the first quarter.

The Dragons battled back and got within four points in the second quarter before the Braves extended their lead to 36-26 at halftime.

Mid-Buchanan used a 10-0 run to start the second half and they outscored Scott County Central 12-2 in the third as the game was tied 38-38 at the end of the third quarter.

The game was back-and-forth in the fouth quarter until Scott County Central used a 6-0 run with the game tied at 46 and they never trailed again.

Garet Moulden led the Dragons with 24 points and seven rebounds, while Austin Scaggs added eight points and Bradyn Kemper scored seven.

Scott County Central wins its 18th state championship in school history.

Mid-Buchanan rallies past Canton to advance to Class 2 state championship

Mid-Buchanan2The Mid-Buchanan boys’ basketball team played its first Final Four game in school history Thursday, and now the Dragons will play for their first state championship in school history Saturday.

Mid-Buchanan defeated Canton in the Class 2 semifinals Thursday inside Mizzou Arena 60-53 to improve to 30-1 this season.

Canton led by as many as six points in the first half and took a 28-26 lead to the locker room at halftime.

Mid-Buchanan used a 10-0 run early in the third quarter to regain the lead and they never trailed again.

Austin Scaggs led the Dragons with 18 points, Garet Moulden added 17 and Braydn Kemper scored 15 points.

Mid-Buchanan will face Scott County Central in the Class 2 state championship game as the Braves defeated Crane 60-49 in the other semifinal to improve to 26-4.

The Dragons and Braves will tip off at 11:00 a.m. Saturday inside Mizzou Arena.

Benton defeats Notre Dame de Sion to advance to Class 4 Quarterfinals

BentonThe Benton girls’ basketball team has advanced to its second consecutive Class 4 quarterfinal as they defeated Notre Dame de Sion, 41-31, Tuesday night in their sectional game at Staley High School.

The Cardinals have now won 18 straight game as they improve to 26-2 this season.  They’ll play Bolivar at 2:45 p.m. Saturday at Liberty North High School for a trip to the Final Four in Columbia on the line.

Tuesday night, Benton nearly led wire-to-wire as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead and led 13-11 after the first quarter.  Sion took a quick 14-13 lead early in the second quarter before the Cardinals ended the half on a 7-2 run and began the second half on a 13-2 run.

Benton led by as many as 15 points, 33-18, in the third quarter and the Storm never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Mallory McAndrews made five three-pointers and led the Cards with 19 points, while Daejah Bernard added 11 and Kylee Williams scored eight.

Benton knocks off Lafayette to win second straight district championship

BentonThe Benton girls’ basketball team won its second consecutive district championship Friday night with a 46-30 victory over Lafayette in the Class 4 District 16 title game at Savannah.

The Cardinals fell behind 4-0 Friday night to their cross-town rivals, but they ended the first quarter on a 9-0 run and never trailed again.

Benton extended its lead to 24-17 at halftime and 32-22 at the end of the third quarter.  The Fighting Irish could only get as close at eight points in the fourth quarter before losing by 16.

Kylee Williams led the Cardinals with 18 points, while Mallory McAndrews added 17.

BHS improves to 25-2 this season and they’re won 17 consecutive games, while Lafayette ends its season 18-8.

Benton will play a Class 4 Sectional at Staley High School Tuesday against the winner of District 15 at 7:45 PM.  Lincoln Prep will battle Notre Dame de Sion in the District 15 championship game Saturday at 5:00 PM.
