Griffons use big fourth quarter to rally past Emporia State 42-28

EMPORIA, Kan. – The Missouri Western football team (5-3) scored 22 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to come from behind and win 42-28 at Emporia State (4-4), Saturday afternoon. The team’s first second half comeback win of the season gave Missouri Western its fifth win of the season, exceeding the win totals from the previous two seasons.

Down 28-20 entering the fourth quarter, the comeback started quick. James Bailey Jr. rushed in for his third touchdown of the game on the third play of the final quarter. Dom Marino hit Donnell Hawkins to complete a two-point conversion and tie the game at 28. It was all Griffons from there as the defense shut out an Emporia State offense that had scored 21-straight points to take the 28-20 lead. No. 11 Bearcats roll at Lindenwood 38-17

ST. CHARLES, Missouri – The Northwest Missouri State University football team extended its win streak to four in a row with a 38-17 triumph over the Lindenwood Lions on Saturday at Hunter Stadium.

Northwest moved to 7-1 overall, while Lindenwood dropped to 3-5 overall.

Parker Sampson put the Bearcats on the board first with a 37-yard field goal with 10:10 left in the opening quarter.

Josh Caldwell added his 29th career rushing touchdown on an 8-yard run when he carried both a handful of Lions defenders into the end zone with 3:17 left in the first quarter.

Lindenwood trimmed the Northwest lead to 10-7 on a 27-yard run by Nash Sutherlin. Sutherlin took a pitch from Lions quarterback Cody Brister and made it to the end zone along the left sideline. Sutherlin’s score came with 7:08 left in the second quarter.

Northwest’s Shawn Bane Jr. returned the ensuing kickoff 53 yards to set the Bearcats up with a short field. Isaiah Strayhorn cashed in on the field position advantage with a 1-yard score on a 4th-and-goal with 2:32 left in the half.

Bearcat defender Jackson Barnes intercepted a tipped pass at the Lindenwood 17-yard line to give Northwest another short field when Braden Wright scored on a 3-yard rushing score. Wright’s score gave Northwest a 24-7 lead at the half.

The Bearcats took the opening kickoff of the second half and marched 56 yards in six plays for their fourth rushing touchdown of the game. Strayhorn scored his second rushing score from the one-yard line to give Northwest a 31-7 lead with 12:56 left in the third quarter.

Lindenwood cut into the Northwest advantage on a 26-yard field goal by kicker Barrett Foley. Foley’s three-pointer with 7:54 left in the third quarter made it 31-10 in favor of the Bearcats.

The Lions took advantage of a Northwest miscue when Wright threw only his third interception of the season. Lindenwood found the end zone on a 26-yard toss from Brister to Paul Silvio. Silvio’s score came with 5:38 left in the third quarter and cut Northwest’s lead to 31-17.

Northwest’s LaTroy Harper popped a 55-yard kick return that set up the Bearcats with a drive starting at Lindenwood’s 16-yard line. The Bearcats cashed in with another red zone score when Wright connected with Marqus Andrews on a 1-yard touchdown pass with 2:57 left in the third quarter. Missouri bounces back to throttle Memphis 65-33

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Defense came at a premium in Missouri’s homecoming game against Memphis. The teams combined for 68 points in the first half, and continued to keep the scoreboard operator busy in the second.

When it was all said and done, Missouri rolled over Memphis. Drew Lock threw for 350 yards and four touchdowns on 23-for-29 passing, and Missouri defeated Memphis 65-33 in its homecoming game on Saturday.

After losing three straight Southeastern Conference contests, Missouri (4-3) responded with a much-needed victory. It jumped out to a 21-0 lead less than six minutes into the game, and never relinquished it.

“I thought the offensive staff leading up to today, they did a heck of a job of putting together a game plan, finding a way to get us some matchups,” Missouri coach Barry Odom said. “Some one-on-one matchups. And formationally, we were able to do some things that really gave us an advantage.”

Albert Okwuegbunam took advantage of one-on-one coverage multiple times throughout the contest. He caught six passes for 159 yards and three touchdowns and Jalen Knox had five catches for 104 yards and a score.

All of Memphis’ scoring came without star running back Darrell Henderson, who exited the game after four carries in the first quarter. He was seen riding on a stationary bike and left to the locker room in the second quarter.

Henderson entered the game leading the nation with 1,133 rushing yards, 15 total touchdowns and 10.3 yards per carry. Tony Pollard and Patrick Taylor Jr. split carries the rest of the way, and Memphis’ rushing attack was limited to 4.6 yards per carry.

Missouri sprinted out of the gates by blocking a punt on Memphis’ first drive and Christian Holmes intercepted Brady White’s pass for a 42-yard touchdown return on Memphis’ second drive.

Memphis (4-4) climbed back with 17 straight points, but Missouri responded with 20 consecutive of its own. Missouri’s defense slowed down the visiting Tigers in the second half, and the home Tigers cruised to their first victory since Sept. 15 against Purdue.

THE TAKEAWAY

Memphis: Contrary to its close game against No. 10 Central Florida last week, Memphis looked thoroughly outplayed against Missouri. Memphis fans will be closely watching the status of Henderson’s injury.

“Not the showing we wanted to have,” Memphis coach Mike Norvell said. “Got off to a slow start, turned the ball over, had miscues in every phase and gave up too many explosive plays defensively and had some missed assignments that really cost us.”

Missouri: The Tigers broke out of their three-game losing streak in a big way. Lock and the Missouri offense found its form, and the Tigers look to carry momentum into the second half of SEC play.

TURNING POINT

After 17 unanswered Memphis points, Missouri faced a fourth-and-1 on its own 34. Lock completed a pass to Jonathon Johnson. The next play was a 58-yard touchdown pass to Albert Okwuegbunam. Missouri scored 20 consecutive points to open up its lead.

“It’s a pretty gutsy call,” Lock said. “The tides turned. We picked that up, we scored. Came back, scored again. The momentum swang in our way. It was a big point in the game.”

HENDERSON HURT

Against Missouri, Henderson spent more time riding the bike than running the ball. Memphis coach Mike Norvell described the injury as a “tweak” and declined to be more specific. Pollard was prepared to come in relief.

“It’s a `next man’ mentality,” Pollard said. “That’s how we go about things. You’ve just got to be ready when your number’s called.”

UNLOCKED

Lock threw for just one touchdown and five interceptions in his previous three games. The last time he tossed for over 300 yards and four touchdowns came against Wyoming in week two, when he compiled 398 yards and four touchdowns.

“I thought he was smart with the ball,” Odom said. “He’s continuing to grow, he’s such a talented kid and player. In-game adjustments, I thought, was maybe one of the best ways that he’s done up to this point.”

UP NEXT

Memphis has a bye week before facing East Carolina on Nov. 3.

Missouri returns to conference play with a home matchup next Saturday against No. 14 Kentucky.

Northwest volleyball falls at No. 17 Central Missouri

WARRENSBURG, Missouri – The No. 17-ranked Central Missouri Jennies secured a 3-1 win over the visiting Northwest Missouri State Bearcat volleyball squad. The Jennies won by set scores of 20-25, 25-23, 25-16, 26-24.

Northwest senior Sofia Schleppenbach collected a season-high 16 kills and hit .371. Sophomore Maddy Ahrens earned her 13th double-double on the season with 43 assists and 14 digs. Senior Olivia Nowakowski totaled a team-best 17 digs.

The Bearcats won the opening set by hitting .359 with 17 kills and three errors. The Bearcats were able to side out at a 75-percent clip in the first set. The set was tied, 10-10, before Northwest used a 4-1 spurt to take a lead it would not relinquish.

In the second set, UCM jumped out to a 9-3 lead. However, Northwest rallied and knotted at 15-15. UCM seized momentum late by turning a 19-19 tie into a 24-21 lead for the Jennies. UCM would win the set, 25-23.

Northwest committed seven errors and hit .031 in the third set, while UCM had 15 kills and three errors for a .364 attack percentage. The Jennies took the third, 25-16.

The fourth set featured 13 ties and four lead changes along with a late rally from Northwest, but UCM secured the victory with a 27-25 triumph.

The Bearcats will return home to Maryville for two matches next weekend in Bearcat Arena. Northwest will match up against Missouri Southern (Fri., 6 p.m.) and against Southwest Baptist (Sat., 3 p.m.).

Huskers beat Minnesota for first win under Scott Frost

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A bucket of sports drink having been just poured over his head, Scott Frost wrapped up a quick television interview near midfield and started sprinting off the field at Memorial Stadium.

Moments after the clock hit zeroes on a 53-28 victory over Minnesota Saturday, it was time for him to soak it all in.

As he ran through the end zone and entered the tunnel, Frost took off his cap and held it high to thank the fans who had waited seven games for the native son who won so many times as a player on this field to pick up his first win as coach.

“I just didn’t expect it to be in October,” Frost said. “But we’ve got as good a fans as there are in the country. They’re loyal. They’re supportive. Our kids appreciate it them. They’re fighting hard for them. Yeah, I almost teared up running off the field. That was a special moment.”

A week after squandering a late 10-point lead at Northwestern and losing in overtime, the Huskers (1-6, 1-4 Big Ten) scored on three of their first four possessions on their way to a 28-0 lead.

Minnesota (3-4, 0-4) made things interesting, though, scoring on three possessions in a row spanning the halves, with backup quarterback Tanner Morgan replacing Zack Annexstad to open the third quarter and leading two straight touchdown drives to pull the Gophers to 28-22.

“That’s how this whole year has been. We’re going to have to play well for four quarters,” Frost said. “We’re getting better every day. We’re still not so good we can sleep on a lead or not play our best. So proud of this team. They could have quit a long time ago. They could have shut it down. This team every week does more of what we ask them, does it better, keeps getting better. That was a pretty good show out there today.”

Barrett Pickering kicked a field goal between Adrian Martinez’s TD passes of 35 and 67 yards to Stanley Morgan Jr. to break things open again, and as the 365th home consecutive sellout crowd started sensing the long-awaited win, a chorus of “Go Big Red” chants began.

Nebraska rushed for 383 yards and totaled 659. Devine Ozigbo ran for 152 yards, Martinez for 125 and Maurice Washington for 109.

Martinez completed 25 of 29 passes adding up to 276 yards and three TDs. Stanley Morgan caught 10 balls for 163 yards, both career highs.

Tanner Morgan was 11 of 16 for 214 yards and Annexstad 9 of 20 for 135. Gophers coach P.J. Fleck said Annextad had to leave the game because of an internal injury in his midsection. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

“Congratulations to Coach Frost,” Fleck said. “It’s a big deal, everybody remembers your first. This team should be 5-1 or 4-2. We didn’t stop them tonight at all. We didn’t tackle well. We didn’t set an edge.”

THE TAKEAWAY

Minnesota: A quarterback controversy could be coming, if Annexstad is healthy enough to play next week. Tanner Morgan gave the Gophers a spark. The Minnesota defense had no answer for Martinez and Co., though.

Nebraska: The defense’s depth issue continues to show up in second halves. The Huskers seemed to tire for the second straight week. This team is much like Frost’s teams at Central Florida. It’s all about the offense.

HOLD OFF ON THE GATORADE

Frost said his Gatorade shower was “inappropriate,” hinting that such high jinx should be reserved for championships.

“First of all, it was cold. I took it like a man,” he said. “I saw it coming, but I’m glad the guys are so excited. They deserve to be excited. There’s going to be a day around here where we aren’t celebrating one win, and we’ll keep working toward it.”

CREATIVE PLAY CALLS

Frost, who calls the offensive plays, dialed up two Statue of Liberty plays, with Washington gaining 17 yards on the first. He also had Washington throw a halfback pass, but the ball fell short of tight end Austin Allen.

The Gophers used a flea-flicker on their second drive of the second half, with Tanner Morgan connecting with tight end Seth Green for 31 yards before Green took a snap out of the wildcat formation and ran in from 4 yards to cut it to 28-22.

IBRAHIM HELD IN CHECK

The Gophers were without running back Shannon Brooks, who was arrested last weekend on suspicion of misdemeanor assault for an altercation with his male roommate. Brooks, who was medically cleared to play after rehabbing an offseason knee injury, didn’t make the trip.

Mohamed Ibrahim, who ran for 157 yards against Ohio State on Oct. 13, was limited to 49 yards on 18 carries.

Kansas loses at Texas Tech 48-16

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Alan Bowman threw for 408 yards and three touchdowns while playing for the first time since suffering a partially collapsed lung three weeks ago, and Texas Tech beat Kansas 48-16 on Saturday.

“Looked like he never even had an injury,” receiver Antoine Wesley said.

Bowman completed 36 of 47 passes while showing accuracy on short and deep passes, with only one interception. The true freshman was the nation’s leading passer when he got crushed between two West Virginia defenders in Texas Tech’s last home game Sept. 29, and was released from the hospital four days later.

“It’s been a while. We just wanted to make sure practice went well. Didn’t want any setbacks,” coach Kliff Kingsbury said. “We felt confident … a few days after he got out of the hospital that he’d be ready for this date. We just wanted to make sure he held up, felt good. His breathing was fine.”

After coming out early in that loss to West Virginia, Bowman missed only one game. Jett Duffey started a 17-14 win at TCU. On his only drive in the fourth quarter Saturday, Duffey completed all three of his passes for 33 yards before DeMarcus Felton’s 34-yard TD run for a 48-9 lead.

Wesley, who entered the game third nationally with 117 yards receiving a game, had nine catches for 155 yards and a nifty one-handed grab for a 6-yard touchdown. T.J. Vasher and Seth Collins also had TD catches for the Red Raiders (5-2, 3-1 Big 12), who had 553 total yards despite three turnovers.

Kansas (2-5, 0-4) lost its 43rd consecutive true Big 12 road game, dating back to a 35-33 win at Iowa State on Oct. 4, 2008.

But the Jayhawks weren’t surprised to see Bowman in the game, no matter how coy Kingsbury had been about who would be his starting quarterback.

“Our defensive game plan was all around Bowman,” senior linebacker Joe Dineen Jr. said. “Our coaches knew that he was going to be able to go this week, so we really prepared for him.”

The Jayhawks played their first game since offensive coordinator Doug Meacham was fired. Peyton Bender threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns while freshman Pooka Williams had 16 carries for 70 yards to finish 38 yards below his rushing average that was second-best in the Big 12.

“We’re disappointed because we didn’t do enough to help us win,” coach David Beaty said of the overall offensive output. “We had a firm understanding of what we were doing. I think everybody felt comfortable there. They were engaged the entire time.”

THE TAKEAWAY

Kansas: The Jayhawks have lost all four of their Big 12 games after finishing their nonconference schedule with consecutive victories games for the first time since 2009.

Texas Tech: Coach Kliff Kingsbury is back to .500 as coach of his alma mater — at 35-35 overall in his sixth season. The former Red Raiders quarterback was 7-0 in his coaching debut in 2013, and is 28-35 since. Tech is one win shy of bowl eligibility, a mark it didn’t reach until the regular-season finale last year.

RED RAIDER D

The Red Raiders has held consecutive conference opponents under 20 points for the first time since 2013, and had three sacks against the Jayhawks. Senior linebacker Kolin Hill had his first two sacks of the season.

“Especially when I first got here, we weren’t known for defense at all,” Hill said. “That’s definitely something that we stress. Things have changed for us defensively.”

EXTRA POINTS

Eight different players caught passes from Bowman. … Dineen had two tackles for loss, giving him 41 for his career and matching Willie Pless for the school record.

Texas Tech: Plays Saturday at Iowa State.
