The St. Joseph Mustangs had their game with the Sedalia Bombers postponed Saturday night at Phil Welch Stadium due to rain and thunderstorms in the area.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball is 15-6 overall this season and they’re 12-4 in the MINK League. Sedalia is 9-3 in league play and the game Saturday was the first meeting of the season between the two teams.

No make-up date has been announced yet.

The Mustangs are back at home Sunday as they entertain the Chillicothe Mudcats at 6:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium. You can listen to the game on KFEQ 680 AM or 107.9 FM, or click here to listen online.

Royals rally, then lose to Twins in 10 innings

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Twins encountered a brief roadblock en route to another win over the Royals.

C.J. Cron homered and singled in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning, and Minnesota beat Kansas City 5-3 on Saturday after blowing a 3-0 lead in the eighth.

“It was a good team win, for sure,” Cron said. “I just tried to drive the ball somewhere. (Wily Peralta) got me out last night with a slider down. This one was not down, fortunately. But that’s baseball. A foot more to the left and that’s a double play.”

Miguel Sano and Jake Cave also homered for the Twins. Eddie Rosario’s double to deep right off Peralta (2-3) scored Cave for a two-run cushion.

Trevor May (2-1) worked a scoreless ninth and Blake Parker retired the side in the 10th for his 10th save in 11 chances. AL Central-leading Minnesota has won two straight after losing four of its previous five.

Both starters had strong outings. The Twins’ Jose Berrios allowed two runs on five hits in seven efficient innings. He took a shutout into the eighth, when he allowed the first two runners to reach and was removed with a blister on his right ring finger.

“He was phenomenal in some tough conditions,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “He went out and did what we needed. He went deep into the game without a ton of pitches. He did exactly what he wanted to do.

“Unfortunately, he had to deal with the blister. With the blister, it came out pretty good. It’s actually in a location that you wouldn’t normally associate with a troubling blister.”

Berrios didn’t think the blister would cause him to miss a start.

“It feels great,” he said. “I had a blister in the eighth inning. After the first hitter, I saw it and took it out. Then it started to burn. I’m good.”

Danny Duffy worked eight innings for the Royals, allowing three solo homers and three other hits, walking two and striking out four.

“The solo home runs got him,” manager Ned Yost said. “None of them were, like, extremely horrible pitches but they were all in their strengths. They weren’t, like, hanging breaking balls. They weren’t pitches up in the zone. But they were pitches to each individual hitter’s strength, and they ended up not missing them.”

In the 10th, Luis Arraez led off with a single and moved to second when Cave was hit by a pitch. Cron’s grounder eluded Hunter Dozier at third to put the Twins ahead.

Humberto Arteaga started the Royals’ rally in the eighth with his first major league hit, a single to right. He scored on Alex Gordon’s two-out double off Taylor Rogers, and Dozier tied it with a two-run single.

A baserunning gaffe by Whit Merrifield cost the Royals in the first. Gordon grounded to first with runners on first and third and none out, and Merrifield broke from third but then froze. Cron tagged out Gordon and got Merrifield in a rundown for a double play.

“C.J. is a defender who does a lot of very positive things for us,” Baldelli said. “He has a very instinctual player.”

Sano led off the second with a 454-foot blast to center, his ninth homer of the season.

Cave and Cron homered in the eighth.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Twins: OF Byron Buxton (right wrist contusion) took practice swings and threw on Friday and likely will be activated next week from the 10-day injured list, Baldelli said.

ROSTER MOVES

Twins RHP Blake Parker was reinstated from family medical leave on Saturday. His wife was experiencing complications with her pregnancy. To make room on the roster, RHP Kohl Stewart was optioned to Triple-A Rochester.

UP NEXT

Right-hander Michael Pineda (4-3, 4.76 ERA) will start for Minnesota in the final game of the four-game series against right-hander Homer Bailey (6-6, 4.82).

Pujols homers but Cards defeat Angels again

ST. LOUIS — Albert Pujols took a curtain call for his adoring fans at Busch Stadium after homering against the Cardinals, but Marcell Ozuna connected to lead Dakota Hudson and St. Louis over the Los Angeles Angels 4-2 on Saturday.

Pujols hit his 13th home run, a solo drive in the seventh inning. He got a standing ovation as he rounded the bases and the cheers grew louder until Pujols emerged from the dugout and tipped his hat to the sellout crowd.

Pujols has 646 career homers, including 445 in his 11 seasons with the Cardinals. His 111 home runs at the new Busch Stadium are the most by anyone.

The three-time NL MVP who helped the Cardinals win two World Series championships returned to the ballpark on Friday night for the first time since helping St. Louis take the 2011 title. Pujols signed with the Angels after that season, and they hadn’t played an interleague game at Busch until this weekend.

Pujols was showered with ovations while hitting a single in two at-bats and drawing a walk Friday night. He went 1 for 4 in this loss, the third in a row for the Angels.

Ozuna hit his team-leading 20th homer of the season off Felix Pena in the sixth inning to make it 4-0 lead. Ozuna homered for the second straight day.

Hudson (6-3) gave up one run on five hits in a season-high 112-pitch stint. He struck out six and walked one. He has allowed one earned run or less in four of his last five starts.

Paul Goldschmidt had two hits for St. Louis, which has won five of seven.

Justin Upton also homered for the Angels, a solo shot in the eighth. Pena (5-2) started the third inning in relief of opener Noe Ramirez.

St. Louis broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fifth on a throwing error. Yadier Molina singled and Kolten Wong walked before Hudson set down a bunt that Pena threw wildly to third.

St. Louis closer Jordan Hicks left the game with two outs in the ninth. Tyler Webb picked up his first save by retiring Jonathan Lucroy on a grounder to end the game.

The Cardinals improved to 185-177 in interleague play, the best among NL teams.

TRAINERS’ ROOM

Angels: RHP Trevor Cahill (right elbow inflammation) is almost ready to return to the active roster. Manager Brad Ausmus would not commit to whether he will return to the starting rotation or pitch out of the bullpen.

Cardinals: INF Jedd Gyorko will undergo a minor arthroscopic procedure on his right wrist on Monday. Cardinals manager Mike Shildt says there is no structural damage and that Gyorko’s recovery from his wrist surgery should coincide with his return from his calf injury that has kept him on the injured list since June 8.

UP NEXT

St. Louis RHP Miles Mikolas (5-7, 4.48) will face LHP Tyler Skaggs (6-6, 4.61) in the finale of the three-game set on Sunday night. Mikolas tossed six scoreless innings in a 5-0 win over Miami on Monday. Skaggs, who is looking to win his third successive start, leads the Angles in wins (6) and strikeouts (70).

Royals deal RHP Lively to Diamondbacks for cash

The Kansas City Royals announced they’ve traded right-hander Ben Lively to the Arizona Diamondbacks for cash considerations.

Lively was designated for assignment by the Royals on Thursday. He split time this season with the major league club and the Royals’ Triple-A affiliate in Omaha.

Lively appeared in only one game for Kansas City this year, allowing three earned runs in one inning against the Los Angeles Angels on April 28.

The Diamondbacks said Lively was assigned to Triple-A Reno.

Mustangs rally to defeat Omaha 8-7 in 10 innings

The St. Joseph Mustangs snapped a two-game losing streak Friday night as they rallied to defeat the Omaha Bombers 9-8 in 10 innings.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team improves to 15-6 this season season.

The Mustangs trailed Omaha 8-5 with two outs in the ninth and no base runners, but St. Joseph earned their first win when trailing after eight innings.

Karl Koerper drew a two-out walk in the ninth, Hampton Hudson also walked and then Dylan Ketch singled home Koerper to pull the Mustangs within two runs.

St. Joe catcher J.P. Tighe then hit a two-run double to tie the game and force extra innings.

In the 10th, Jordan Maxson hit a sacrifice fly that scored Karsen Reid for the walk-off win for the Mustangs.

Koerper had two hits, including his fourth home run, and two RBI, while Ketch added two hits.

Cameron July earned the win in relief as he threw two scoreless innings. July struck out five and allowed just one hit.

The Mustangs get back into MINK League play Saturday as they host the Sedalia Bombers at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Royals blow three-run lead, lose to Twins 8-7

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Max Kepler’s RBI single drove in the tiebreaking run and Eddie Rosario added a run-scoring hit to cap Minnesota’s three-run rally in the eighth and the Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 8-7 Friday night.

Minnesota scored five runs in the last three innings to avoid its first three-game losing streak of the season.

Ryne Harper (3-0) pitched one-plus inning to pick up the win despite allowing Jorge Soler’s 21st leadoff home run in the eighth that pulled the Royals back within one. Taylor Rogers got the last six outs for his ninth save in 11 chances.

Cheslor Cuthbert had three hits and four RBI — tying career highs in both — for the Royals, who have lost a major league-high 26 games in which they’ve held a lead. Kansas City has been outscored 177-125 after the sixth inning this season.

Trailing 6-3, the Twins pulled within one on Nelson Cruz’s two-run single in the seventh.

Miguel Sano started Minnesota’s rally in the eighth with a leadoff homer off Jake Diekman (0-5) to tie the score. Pinch-hitter Mitch Garver then walked and Jonathan Schoop singled. Max Kepler’s single to right drove in pinch-runner Willians Astudillo with the go-ahead run, with Schoop advancing to third and Kepler taking second on the throw. After Jorge Polanco and Cruz hit fielder’s choice grounders, Rosario singled to left to drive in Polanco to make it 8-6.

Royals starter Jakob Junis allowed three runs and six hits in six innings.

Martin Perez gave up six runs — four earned — in five innings for the Twins.

The Royals scored three runs in the first inning for the second straight game. Cuthbert had an RBI double down the left-field line for the first run. With two outs, Humberto Arteaga rolled a grounder to short, but Polanco’s throw pulled first baseman C.J. Cron off the bag and Soler scored. Martin Maldonado singled against the shift to drive in Cuthbert to make it 3-0.

Cron led off the second with a 424-foot home run to center to get the Twins on the scoreboard.

Minnesota tied it in the fifth with two outs. Rosario’s single scored Schoop and sent Cruz to third. Rosario then stole second, and an errant throw by Maldonado allowed Cruz to score the tying run.

Cuthbert untied it in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run home run to give the Royals a 6-3 lead.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Twins C Garver came out of Thursday’s game with left heel soreness. He was not in the starting lineup Friday. “It was more of a precautionary removal last night,” manager Rocco Baldelli said. “He felt something and because he didn’t know what it was, he didn’t want to push himself in anyway. We wouldn’t want him to.” Garver entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the eighth.

ROSTER MOVES

Twins RHP Blake Parker is expected to return from the Family Medical Emergency Leave List on Saturday. His wife was experiencing complications with her pregnancy. “I’ve got a pregnant wife at the house,” Parker said. “There was a little bit of complications there, but everything seems to be back on track and good to go.”

Royals 3B Hunter Dozier was recalled from his rehab assignment Friday. He has been on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain since June 3 (retroactive to May 31). He played Monday through Wednesday at Double-A Northwest Arkansas before returning to Kansas City Thursday for the birth of his second child. His wife, Amanda, gave birth to a daughter named Blake. “It’s been a whirlwind. It’s definitely a blessing. We brought a little girl into the world, and Mom and baby are doing well. I didn’t get much sleep, but I feel good.” … In a corresponding move, the Royals optioned OF Jorge Bonifacio to Triple-A Omaha.

UP NEXT

RHP Jose Berrios (8-3, 2.86 ERA) will start for Minnesota. He’ll face Royals LHP Danny Duffy (3-3, 4.64 ERA) in the third game of the four-game series.

Pujols cheered in return as Cardinals defeat Angels 5-1

ST. LOUIS — Albert Pujols drew so many cheers in his return to St. Louis, he even apologized to Cardinals pitcher Michael Wacha.

Pujols was showered with ovations in his long-awaited return to Busch Stadium, but Marcell Ozuna spoiled the homecoming with a home run that helped the Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-1 on Friday night.

“They showed you why they are the best fans in baseball,” Pujols said.

Pujols spent the first 11 years of his All-Star career with the Cardinals, helped them win the 2011 World Series and then signed with Angels as a free agent. Due to inconsistent interleague scheduling, this was the first time the Angels have visited St. Louis since Pujols left.

The slugger went 1 for 2 with a walk before being pulled for a pinch-runner.

Pujols received a standing ovation from the sellout crowd of 48,423 every time he stepped to the plate, including one in the first inning that lasted over a minute. He embraced Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina before batting, prompting the fans to get even louder.

“It’s pretty amazing. I’m just glad to be able to play here for 11 years and have the great memories. I was pretty close from having a couple of tears there I think, especially when I hugged Yadi and we had that little moment to ourselves.”

In the fourth, Wacha heard a smattering of boos after walking Pujols on four straight pitches to lead off the inning. Pujols got more cheers heading to the dugout after being erased on a forceout.

“He’s a dangerous hitter, I’m not trying to leave anything over the middle there,” Wacha said. “Ended up walking him and I guess the crowd didn’t like it too much,” Wacha said.

Wacha singled in the fifth. Pujols, playing first base, told Wacha he was sorry the ovations were messing with his routine.

“He said don’t worry about it, you deserve it,” Pujols said.

Said Wacha: “He probably deserved about five more minutes of that ovation.”

It was a rather eventful evening at the park in several ways.

In the bottom of the first with Matt Carpenter batting, the stadium’s alarm system was falsely activated, prompting a brief delay and sending a scattering of fans to the concourse.

In the fourth, Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt hammered a foul fall that went completely out of the stadium.

Cardinals fans chanted “Let’s go, Albert” during Pujols’ at-bat in the seventh and he got a cheer as he beat out an infield single to lead off the frame. He drew a final standing ovation after being lifted for pinch-runner Wilfredo Tovar two batters later.

“I think Yadi did a nice job of giving the fans an opportunity to cheer Albert each time he came to the plate,” Angels manager Brad Ausmus said. “Having played here many times and seeing how Cardinals fans react to even visiting players, I fully expected that to happen.”

Ozuna’s solo homer in the sixth broke a 1-1 tie. Ozuna also had RBI singles in the fourth and seventh.

Wacha (5-3) settled in after giving up an RBI double to Justin Upton in the first inning. He went six innings, struck out four, walked one and retired the final eight batters he faced.

Griffin Canning (2-4) sent down the first nine batters he faced before running into control issues in the fourth. He walked Carpenter and Goldschmidt and balked both into scoring position ahead of Ozuna’s single.

Despite the loss, Friday’s game will always mean something to Pujols.

“It was an incredible moment tonight and it’s something that I’m going to put it right up there with the accomplishment of winning the World Series twice here,” Pujols said. “It was a pretty special night.”

FACES IN THE CROWD

St. Louis natives Pat Maroon and Blaine Gabbert were at the game. Maroon helped lead the Blues to the Stanley Cup championship and Gabbert is a quarterback on the Tampa Bay roster.

HOT TICKET

The crowd was the eighth sellout of the season for the Cardinals and the second largest in Busch Stadium III history.

ROSTER MOVES

Angels: Recalled RHP Jake Jewell and RHP Luke Bard and optioned LHP Jose Suarez and RHP Taylor Cole to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Cardinals: Activated INF Yairo Munoz from the paternity list and optioned 1B/OF Rangel Ravelo to Triple-A Memphis.

UP NEXT

Angels: RHP Felix Pena (5-1, 4.70 ERA) will try to build on a career-high five straight winning decisions in the second game of the series in St. Louis on Saturday. He is 0-0 with a 4.92 ERA in three career appearances, all in relief, against the Cardinals.

Cardinals: RHP Dakota Hudson (5-3, 3.55 ERA) has seven straight quality starts and hasn’t given up a homer in 53 innings. He has never faced the Angels.

The St. Joseph Mustangs lost their second straight game Thursday as they fell at home to the Nevada Griffons 7-3.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team drops to 14-6 this season and 12-4 in the MINK League.

Nevada used a five-run first inning to take a quick lead on the Mustangs and they weren’t able to rally Thursday. St. Joseph committed three errors in that opening frame as four of the runs were unearned. The Mustangs did score single runs in the second, sixth and eighth innings to close the game to 5-3, but the Griffons capped off the win with two runs in the ninth.

Mahlyk Davis suffered the loss for St. Joe as he allowed just the one earned run and seven hits in seven innings of work.

The three runs scored by the Mustangs were all solo home runs from Jordan Maxson, Karl Koerper and Drew Beazley.

St. Joseph is back at home Friday as they host the Omaha Strike Zone in a non-league game at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.
