Royals open the second half with 4-2 loss to the Tigers

riggertRoyalsDETROIT (AP) — A year after the Detroit Tigers traded away stars at the deadline, Justin Verlander is trying to prevent that from happening again.

“You don’t want to be sellers. Obviously we went through that last year, and it was tough for everybody here, especially when you’ve got a lot of guys in this clubhouse that are used to winning,” Verlander said. “We are a good club, and we’ve just got to go out there and prove it.”

Verlander struck out 10 in seven innings, and the Tigers scored three runs in the seventh to rally past Kansas City 4-2 on Friday night.

Victor Martinez drove in two runs with a single in the seventh when his comebacker deflected off reliever Joakim Soria and rolled to the area between first and second. With the second baseman playing way out in shallow right field, the Royals couldn’t retire Martinez, and two runners scored on the play.

“I’d rather give up a double up the gap than do that, because I had a chance to get us out of the inning, and I didn’t take it,” Soria said. “I made the pitches, but didn’t field my position.”

Detroit’s Tyler Collins hit a solo homer earlier in the inning off Luke Hochevar (1-2) to tie the game at 2. Ian Kinsler also homered for the Tigers.

Verlander (9-6) allowed one earned run and four hits. Justin Wilson pitched the eighth and Francisco Rodriguez finished for his 25th save in 27 chances.

Detroit traded David Price, Yoenis Cespedes and Soria during a disappointing 2015. The Tigers have been better this year, but they came into the day trailing by 6 1/2 games in the AL Central and by four in the race for a wild card.

Collins was called up from the minors before the game to replace Justin Upton, who was put on the bereavement list. Collins was 2 for 22 with Detroit this season before his seventh-inning homer tied the game. After consecutive singles by Jose Iglesias and Kinsler, Soria came on and walked Cameron Maybin to load the bases with one out.

After falling behind 3-0 on Miguel Cabrera, Soria recovered to strike out the Detroit slugger, but Martinez followed with his grounder that turned into a two-run single.

Verlander struck out the side in the first, and Kinsler led off the bottom half with a homer, but Detroit couldn’t add to that lead. With men on first and second in the sixth, Kansas City’s Salvador Perez lifted a deep drive to right that Steven Moya couldn’t handle. Perez ended up with an RBI double, and another run came home on the play thanks to a throwing error by Kinsler.

Kansas City starter Ian Kennedy allowed a run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out three.

RETURN

The most memorable thing Collins did with the Tigers earlier this season was extend a middle finger toward booing home fans back in April. He heard plenty of cheers Friday after his big home run.

“It feels great, definitely,” Collins said. “It feels better to get the win.”

RESPECT

Royals manager Ned Yost, who was the American League skipper at the All-Star Game, talked a bit about Cabrera’s gesture in Tuesday’s game in which he insisted Kansas City’s Eric Hosmer get another at-bat to try to boost his MVP case. Cabrera didn’t replace Hosmer until the seventh inning of that game.

“What’s really unique about the All-Star Game for me is that you get 34 guys from different organizations that you’re screaming at and yelling at one day from across the field, but you walk into that clubhouse door and it’s amazing how they unite into a team for two days,” Yost said.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: Yost said OF Lorenzo Cain (left hamstring) is probably at about 85 percent. Cain is eligible to come off the DL whenever the Royals feel he’s ready.

Tigers: Manager Brad Ausmus said LHP Daniel Norris (right oblique) was probably a couple of days away from a bullpen session. … RHP Jordan Zimmermann (neck) said he would probably do long-toss Saturday.

UP NEXT

Royals: LHP Danny Duffy (4-1) starts Saturday night against the Tigers. He has struck out at least seven hitters in four straight starts. The last Kansas City pitcher to do it in five straight starts was Zack Greinke, when he won the Cy Young Award in 2009.

Tigers: RHP Mike Pelfrey (2-8) tries for his third straight quality start.

St. Louis blows two different leads in loss to Miami

riggertCardinalsST. LOUIS (AP) — Ichiro Suzuki had a pinch-single for his 2,991st career hit and scored to tie it in the eighth inning and Miguel Rojas drove in the go-ahead run in the ninth as the Miami Marlins beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-6 on Friday night for their fourth straight victory.

Tommy Pham had two of the Cardinals’ four homers and drove in four runs. Stephen Piscotty and Randal Grichuk also connected for St. Louis, which hit two each off Wei-Yin Chen and reliever David Phelps but had three defensive miscues.

The hit was the first since July 4 for the 42-year-old Suzuki. He’s had just seven pinch-hit appearances and one start this month with the Marlins, who have a steady outfield rotation of Christian Yelich, Marcell Ozuna and Giancarlo Stanton.

The Cardinals blew leads of 4-1 and 6-5 to fall to 19-27 at home. They were 55-26 at home last year, tied for best in the majors.

Matt Holliday, getting his sixth start at first base, couldn’t handle a long hop on a potential double play ball in the fourth inning that led to a run. Reliever Kevin Siegrist made an errant pickoff throw on Suzuki for an error and Grichuk came in and couldn’t retreat in time to harness Ozuna’s double in the ninth that led to the winning run.

Chen has surrendered 19 homers, among the league leaders. Phelps had given up just two in 46 innings.

Seung Hwan Oh (2-1), the Cardinals’ stand-in closer, lost on his 34th birthday.

Suzuki singled off Siegrist with one out in the eighth and scored on Martin Prado’s two-out hit off Jonathan Broxton.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Marlins: 1B Justin Boer (ankle) is eligible to come off the DL on Monday but is still experiencing soreness and manager Don Mattingly said, “progressing, but not ready yet.”

Cardinals: 1B-OF Brandon Moss (ankle) is eligible to come off the DL on Saturday but is still in a walking boot.

BIG PITCH

New Missouri football coach Barry Odom and national champion wrestler J’Den Cox threw ceremonial first pitches.

UMPIRE DOWN

The umpiring crew worked a man short after plate ump Chad Fairchild took a foul off his right forearm in the bottom of the first. Jim Joyce went from first base to home.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Long-time Cardinals broadcaster Mike Shannon worked the booth on his 77th birthday.

UP NEXT

Marlins: Tom Koehler is 1-2 with a 7.56 ERA in three career starts against the Cardinals.

Cardinals: Adam Wainwright (8-5, 4.49) is 50-28 with a 3.05 ERA for his career after the break. He is 2-0 his last two outings, allowing one run in 14 innings.

Mack Rhoades leaving Missouri to be Baylor’s new AD

riggertMissouriWACO, Texas (AP) — Baylor hired Mack Rhoades as its new athletic director on Wednesday, bringing in an experienced administrator it believes will help the reeling program rebound from allegations that it didn’t properly handle sexual assault claims against its football players.

Rhoades had been Missouri’s athletic director only since April 2015, a month after he was named to the position.

“He is a charismatic leader who pays careful attention to details and cultivates solidarity among the coaches and staff,” interim school president David Garland said in a statement. “He intends to build champions on the field and on the court and to mold student-athletes into champions in their lives after sports. Most importantly, he is committed to and excited by Baylor’s Christian mission and vision.”

Rhoades replaces Ian McCaw, who resigned on May 30 after he was put on probation as part of Baylor’s response to a scathing report about its failure to properly respond to allegations of sexual assaults. That report also led the departure of football coach Art Briles. Baylor has hired former Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe to replace Briles.

The 50-year-old Rhoades previously was AD at Houston for nearly six years, where he hired former Ohio State offensive coordinator Tom Herman as head coach of the Cougars. He was also the athletic director at Akron from 2005-09, and worked in the athletic departments at UTEP, Marquette and Yale.

“I look forward to the opportunity to join Baylor University at this important time in its history,” Rhoades said in a statement. “I am excited to support and develop programs of the highest caliber, in facilities that are second to none, alongside coaches who are among the best in the industry, all grounded in a Christian tradition and committed to academic excellence.”

Baylor plans to formally introduce during a news conference Monday.

Much has changed at Missouri in Rhoades’ 15 months on the job.

Student protests on campus over social issues and racial tensions spilled over into the athletic department last season when the football team essentially went on strike in support of the protesters, who were demanding the resignation of university systems President Tim Wolfe. Former coach Gary Pinkel and Rhoades stood by the players, who in the end didn’t miss any practice time, much less a game. Both the president and school chancellor, R. Bowen Loftin, resigned.

“The past year has taught me a great deal about who I am as a person and as a leader,” Rhoades said. “I am very grateful to the people I’ve worked with and come to know throughout the state of Missouri. The experience has helped galvanized a commitment to my core values and to the values I want to infuse into an athletics program.”

Pinkel retired after last season and announced he was fighting cancer. Permanent replacements for Wolfe and Loftin, who hired Rhoades, have not been hired.

Rhoades promoted defensive coordinator and former Missouri player Barry Odom to head coach, but the school, athletic department and Rhoades have faced continuing criticism from fans, boosters and state lawmakers for their handling of the players’ threatened boycott. Rhoades also had to hire a new baseball coach and dealt with a Title IX office investigation of softball coach Ehren Earleywine.

The announcement of Rhoades’ departure to Baylor came on the same day Missouri was one of the teams appearing at SEC football media days in Hoover, Alabama.

“He’s got an opportunity that he thought was best for him and I know that I’m very, very excited about the University of Missouri and what I’ve got in place with my staff from a football program standpoint,” said Odom, who had a long discussion with Rhoades on Tuesday night. “I absolutely know we’ll get a great director of athletics in here. The things we’ve done in the last eight months are going to set us up for the next 20 years.”

Baylor is facing at least three federal lawsuits brought by women who claim the school was indifferent to or ignored claims of sexual assault and didn’t enforce federal gender discrimination protections under Title IX. When Baylor released its report May 26, school regents suspended Briles “with intent to terminate.” The school and Briles mutually agreed to part ways a month later.

K-State lands five on All-Big 12 preseason football team

riggertKansasStateMANHATTAN, Kan. – Led by four upperclassmen on the defensive side of the ball, Kansas State had five football players named to the Preseason All-Big 12 team as chosen by media representatives who cover the league, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Seniors Dante Barnett (defensive back) and Jordan Willis (defensive end), along with juniors Will Geary (defensive tackle) and Elijah Lee (linebacker) were joined by sophomore fullback Winston Dimel to give K-State the second-most players on the preseason team behind defending conference champion Oklahoma (9). Additionally, the five Wildcats on the team are the most since they placed a league-high five on the preseason squad in 2013.

Four of the five players have earned postseason All-Big 12 status in their career, including first-team honorees Dimel (Coaches) and Geary (Associated Press) during the 2015 season.

Barnett returns for a second senior year after sustaining a season-ending injury in the 2015 opener. A 2014 All-Big 12 performer who is on the watch lists for the 2016 Bednarik Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Tulsa, Oklahoma, native leads the Wildcats with 181 career tackles and seven interceptions.

A product of Kansas City, Missouri, Willis played at an All-Big 12 level last season, ranking second in the league in sacks (9.5) and fourth in tackles for loss (15.5) as part of his 36 tackles on the year. He ranked 24th nationally in sacks, while his four forced fumbles were 13th in the nation a year ago.

Geary, a native of Topeka, totaled 45 tackles last season, the most by a K-State interior defensive lineman since 2005. His best game of the year came against Oklahoma when he recorded eight tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks.

Lee, who is on the watch list for this year’s Bednarik and Butkus Awards in addition to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, had a team-leading 80 tackles and three interceptions in 2015. He became K-State’s first underclassman linebacker to earn First or Second Team All-Big 12 honors since 1998 (Mark Simoneau) and was the first Wildcat underclassman to pace the squad in tackles since 2008.

A 13-game starter at fullback, Dimel became the first Wildcat freshman to ever earn First Team All-Big 12 honors, while he was the lone freshman on the 2015 All-Big 12 First Team. The Manhattan product recorded six rushing touchdown to rank third in school history. He also ranked fifth among freshmen at K-State in receiving yards (261) and total points (48).

K-State’s annual Fan Appreciation Day is set for Saturday, August 13, at Bill Snyder Family Stadium with details for the event announced at a later date. Head coach Bill Snyder, along with the 2016 team captains – Barnett, Willis, Jesse Ertz and Dalton Risner – will head to Dallas next Tuesday to participate in Big 12 Media Day.

Heading into Snyder’s 25th season at the helm of the Wildcats, excitement is building for the 2016 season as a limited number of single-game tickets remain available for K-State’s six home games. Available tickets for the homecoming game against Texas on Saturday, October 22, are expected to be down to scattered singles soon, and the other five home games are also selling quickly as K-State looks to extend its sellout streak to 33-straight games.
