Royals drop series opener at Philadelphia 4-3

riggertRoyalsPHILADELPHIA (AP) — Odubel Herrera put the finishing touches on his All-Star bid.

Herrera hit a leadoff homer and drove in two runs, Jeremy Hellickson threw six sharp innings and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Kansas City Royals 4-3 Friday night for their fourth straight win.

Herrera is batting .306 with nine homers and an .835 OPS. He’s a strong candidate to represent the Phillies at the Midsummer Classic in San Diego.

“If that happens, great,” Herrera said through an interpreter. “If it doesn’t, I just want to help my team win.”

Asked if he feels he deserves to go, Herrera answered himself: “For sure.”

Hellickson (6-6) allowed one run and five hits in six innings, striking out six. He was 0-9 in his previous 15 starts against AL opponents.

“The biggest key was just quality strike one,” Hellickson said. “They’re aggressive, but they don’t strike out a lot, so just making that first pitch down and just trying to keep them off-balance as much as I could.”

Royals starter Ian Kennedy (6-7) gave up three runs in five innings.

Kendrys Morales hit a two-run homer off David Hernandez in the eighth before the right-hander settled down to retire the next three batters. Jeanmar Gomez finished for his 22nd save in 24 tries.

“He’s swinging the bat really well right now,” Royals manager Ned Yost said of Morales, who is 13 for his last 20. “He gave us an opportunity to try to tie the game.”

Back home after sweeping the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Phillies snapped a seven-game home losing streak.

A video review helped Philadelphia take a 2-1 lead in the third.

Herrera walked with one out, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Salvador Perez. After Peter Bourjos struck out looking, Cody Asche walked. Perez then picked Asche off first, but the Phillies challenged and the call was overturned. Maikel Franco followed with an RBI single.

Asche ripped an RBI double to right in the fifth to put the Phillies ahead 3-1. Herrera’s RBI single in the sixth made it 4-1.

Herrera gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead on his ninth homer and first leading off.

Alcides Escobar hit a double and scored on Cheslor Cuthbert’s single to tie it at 1 in the second.

Mizzou names Steve Bieser new baseball coach

MizzouCOLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou will usher in a new era of baseball as Steve Bieser has been tabbed as the next head coach, announced Thursday by Director of Athletics Mack Rhoades. Bieser will be Mizzou’s 14th head coach and just the fourth since 1937. Bieser comes to Mizzou after an extremely successful career at Southeast Missouri, where he became the only coach ever to win three consecutive Ohio Valley Conference Championships and guided the Redhawks to their first NCAA Regional last year since 2002.

A two-time OVC Coach of the Year, Bieser won 35 or more games in each of his last three seasons at SEMO, a feat that had been accomplished just once before he took over the program in 2013. Bieser turned in a .587 winning percentage in his time at SEMO, the best among any coach in program history.

Bieser turned in a banner year in 2016, as he earned his 100th career victory and opened OVC play with a perfect 12-0 record, the best start in program history. The season culminated in a regular season OVC Championship, an OVC Tournament title and the school’s first NCAA Regional since 2002, qualifying for the Starkville Regional at SEC Champion Mississippi State.

Bieser will be presented publicly in a press conference set for 11 a.m. Friday morning on top of the McArtor Baseball Facility at Taylor Stadium.

“Steve Bieser is a rising star in the college baseball ranks and a proven winner,” Director of Athletics Mack Rhoades said. “He has an impressive track-record of success, winning championships at each stop in his coaching career. He will be a tremendous role model for our student-athletes and has demonstrated a unique ability to develop his players athletically, academically and socially beyond what they believed they could achieve. He boasts remarkable intellectual horsepower and has a very cerebral approach to the game of baseball. He is a relationship-builder and will be a great fit for Mizzou. We are excited to welcome Steve, his wife Diahann and their children, Cole, Whitley, Briley and Carley to the Mizzou family.”

Prior to serving as SEMO’s head coach beginning in 2013, Bieser was the pitching coach for his alma mater from 2011-12 and he carried his prowess for developing hurlers into his head coaching tenure. His most notable pupil was LHP Joey Lucchesi, who became the only pitcher to ever win OVC Pitcher of the Year in back-to-back season. Lucchesi shattered the Southeast Missouri and Ohio Valley single-season strikeout records while also consistently leading the nation in 2016 in the category. He became the first Southeast pitcher to win 10 games in 13 years. He was on the watch lists for the prestigious Golden Spike Award, as well as the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s National Pitcher of the Year award.

Following the season, Lucchesi became the highest draft pick ever out of Southeast Missouri when he was selected in the fourth round (114th overall pick) by the San Diego Padres. He was one of two Redhawks drafted in 2016, marking the first time since 2012 that Southeast had multiple draft picks.

“I am truly honored and humbled to have the opportunity to be a part of the University of Missouri community and serve as the head baseball coach,” Bieser said. “I can’t express enough the gratitude I have for Interim Chancellor Foley, Athletic Director Mack Rhoades and the search committee for having the confidence in me to lead this program. When I started my coaching career, I had always dreamed of the opportunity to lead this program.  There is a strong tradition and rich history of Missouri Tiger baseball. I understand the responsibility and I am fully committed and ready to continue building the tradition. As life-long Missourians, my family and I feel truly blessed to be part of the University of Missouri and the Columbia community.”

Aside from success on the field, academic success was a hallmark of Bieser’s program at SEMO. He mentored three Academic All-Americans, 10 Academic All-District picks, one OVC Scholar-Athlete, six OVC Medal of Honor recipients and 48 OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll selections. SEMO had at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point-average in all four years under Bieser, grabbing one OVC Team Academic Award along the way.

After a successful playing career at SEMO, Bieser was drafted in the 32nd round of the 1989 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. He played 13 years as a professional with nine of those years coming at AAA or higher. He made his Major League debut on April 1, 1997, with the New York Mets and played 60 career MLB games between the Mets and the Pittsburgh Pirates, compiling a .250 career average and a .351 career on-base percentage. Bieser made his Major League debut as a catcher, but his versatility led him to play a variety of positions over his career. He closed out his professional career with Memphis (AAA), where he guided the Redbirds to a AAA World Series in 2000. He played every position on the field during his professional career.

Bieser, a native of Saint Genevieve, Mo., went to Southeast after a very successful campaign as head coach at St. John Vianney High School in Kirkwood, Mo. In seven seasons leading the Griffins, his team won two state championships in 2004 and 2006. He compiled a record of 137-51.

Ventura struggles in return as Kansas City falls to Cardinals 8-4

riggertRoyalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Just about everybody in the Cardinals lineup drove in a run, Michael Wacha was good enough on the mound and St. Louis held off the Kansas City Royals 8-4 on Tuesday night to even their four-game, two-city series.

Wacha (4-7) allowed four runs over six innings but, considering he served up nine hits and three walks, it could have been worse. It was his second straight win after dropping seven consecutive decisions.

His bullpen nearly gave it away: Seung Hwan Oh loaded the bases with one out in the ninth before getting pinch-hitter Alex Gordon to pop out and inducing Eric Hosmer into a routine fielder’s choice.

Yordano Ventura (6-5) allowed seven runs on seven hits, three walks and a hit batter in 5 1/3 innings for the Royals. Ventura had only allowed one run over his last two starts, both of which came before an eight-game suspension for his role in a benches-clearing brawl during a game June 7 in Baltimore.

As if things weren’t bad enough for Kansas City, outfielder Lorenzo Cain grabbed his left hamstring while trying to beat out an infield hit in the seventh. He left the game and the extent of the injury was unclear.

The cross-state series shifts to St. Louis for two more games beginning Wednesday night.

Ventura actually breezed through the first inning on just 12 pitches, but trouble came promptly in the second. He gave up three hits, walked two and Yadier Molina, Kolten Wong and Greg Garcia drove in runs.

He appeared to settle down over the next couple innings before more trouble hit in the fifth.

Matt Carpenter started it with a homer to center, the 48th allowed by a Kansas City pitcher this month — the club record is 51 in May 2006. Matt Adams added a sacrifice fly later in the inning to make it 5-2.

Ventura’s night was done in the sixth, when another hit and walk brought manager Ned Yost ambling out of the dugout. Carpenter provided an RBI double and Brandon Moss and Matt Holliday made it 8-2 before reliever Brian Flynn finally got the Royals out of the inning.

Kansas City tacked on two runs in the bottom half before its comeback collapsed in the ninth.

YOU’RE OUTTA HERE

Plate umpire Tim Timmons tossed Royals RHP Edinson Volquez from the bench during the third inning, though it was unclear what prompted the ejection. It was the second time Volquez has been ejected in his career.

ROSTER MOVES

The Cardinals activated C Brayan Pena (left knee surgery) from the DL and designated C Eric Fryer for assignment. Pena signed a $5 million, two-year deal to backup Yadier Molina but has not played this season.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Cardinals SS Aledyms Diaz had no structural damage after fouling a ball off the ground Monday night that ricocheted back off his forehead. He experienced blurry vision in his right eye and visited the hospital after the game, but manager Mike Matheny said Tuesday that Diaz should be back in a few days.

UP NEXT

RHP Carlos Martinez takes the mound for the Cardinals while Kansas City counters with Volquez on the mound at Busch Stadium. Martinez is 3-0 in his last five starts.
