St. Joseph Mustangs return strong arms, big bats for 2017

riggertMustangsST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Nineteen players that boosted the Mustangs to back-to-back 35-win seasons will return to St. Joseph for another season of summer college baseball at Phil Welch Stadium.

The 2017 Mustangs’ roster is headlined by power in the middle of the batting order, with the home run leaders from each of the last two years back.

Last season’s MINK League home run leader, Kyle Uhrich, will don the red and white once again this season. Uhrich blasted seven home runs along with 42 RBIs and a .327 batting average in his first campaign in St. Joseph. He was also selected to the MINK North All-Star team.

First baseman Ramsey Scott also returns to the Mustangs after one summer away. Scott led St. Joe with five home runs during the 2015 season. In his junior season at Murray State University, the Cape Girardeau native was a first team All-Ohio Valley Conference pick with 12 home runs and 63 RBIs.

“I am really excited about the power and speed this offensive lineup will possess for the upcoming season,” Mustangs manager Matt Johnson said. “The return of Ramsey Scott and Kyle Uhrich will give us a powerful right-left combo in the middle of the lineup.”

Louis Mele and Brady Anderson also bring some pop back to the Mustangs. Mele hit 22 home runs in the first round of the MINK League Home Run Derby last season, and batted .364 with 17 RBIs throughout the regular season. Anderson was named team MVP after batting .333 with four home runs, 20 RBIs, and 19 stolen bases.

St. Joseph also brings back top arms to the rotation as well.

Co-Pitchers of the Year from 2016, John Millan and Michael Lydon-Lorson lead the staff into the upcoming summer.

Millan featured a team-best 1.29 ERA along with a 6-2 record in 15 appearances — four coming as a starter. Lydon-Lorson went 4-0 with a 2.28 ERA in his first year with the Mustangs. He struck out 34 batters and walked just seven.

Logan Jacik and Osvaldo Raya also return to the starting rotation.

The back end of the bullpen will feature Steve D’Amico filling the closer’s role once again. D’Amico led the team with five saves in 2016, and struck out 24 through 18.2 innings of work. Jonathan Lynch, Colton Kenagy, Jacob Van Vacter, Drew Ferguson and Jake Purl also bring a year of MINK League experience back to St. Joseph this summer.

“Pitching has always been a staple of our program, and this year will be no different with the return of John Millan and Michael Lydon-Lorson at the top of the rotation and Steve D’Amico at the back end,” Johnson added. “We will look to them for leadership to the new pitchers.”

St. Joseph native Pat Dillon rejoins his hometown team this summer. Dillon missed the 2016 season with injury, but looks for a strong return roaming the outfield for the Mustangs this year. He’ll be joined by Jerimiah Figueroa. Figueroa spent time on the mound, as well as in right field throughout 2016. He also won the Dan DeKraai Community Service Award last year.

Familiar faces also return up the middle for the Mustangs as sure-handed fielders Brett Marr and Matt Wollnik set their sights on another season at Phil Welch Stadium. Each defender has won an ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove during their college careers, and bring that defensive prowess back once again.

This marks the ninth season of St. Joseph Mustangs baseball. Opening Day is scheduled for May 31. Purchase season tickets today by calling (816) 279-7856.

riggertMustangsST. JOSEPH, Mo. — One of the best fan bases in the country boosted the St. Joseph Mustangs into the top 10 of the summer collegiate baseball attendance rankings once again in 2016.

Baseball Digest and Ballpark Biz announced that the Mustangs’ attendance landed in the top ten among all summer collegiate baseball teams in the country for the fourth consecutive season.

St. Joseph drew an average of 2,275 fans per game, which ranks seventh in the nation. The Mustangs saw a total attendance of 65,967 throughout the summer — an increase of more than 4,000 fans from the previous year. That total is the eighth most among all summer collegiate teams.

“We had a hot summer, and we even lost a Saturday night on 4th of July weekend to rain, and to still finish seventh in the nation is just a testament to how great this fan base is,” Mustangs’ general manager Ky Turner said.

St. Joe kicked the 2016 season off with a 7-3 win over the Ban Johnson Raiders in front of 4,493 fans at Phil Welch Stadium. That set a new opening night attendance record for the team.

Mustangs’ season ends with 3-2 loss at Sedalia in MINK League playoffs

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had their season come to an end Wednesday as they lost 3-2 at Sedalia in the MINK League North Wild Card playoff game.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team couldn’t climb out of a 3-0 hole Wednesday as the Bombers scored three in the third inning to take an early lead.  The Mustangs had multiple chances to tied or take the lead but ultimately came up short in their comeback attempt.

St. Joseph left nine men on base and they finished the game 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

The Mustangs’ Louis Mele scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning and then Jeremiah Figueroa walked with the bases loaded in the eighth to make it a one-run game.  Trailing 3-2, St. Joe still had the bases loaded with no outs after Figueroa’s walk, but they failed to score a run as the inning ended when Brady Anderson was picked off of third base.

In the ninth, Kyle Uhrich struck out to end the game with Brett Marr standing at second base.

The Mustangs out-hit Sedalia 7-6 as Marr and Matt Wollnick had two hits each.

Osvaldo Raya (0-2) suffered the loss as he struggled with his command.  He walked six in 4.1 innings as he gave up three runs on four hits.  John Millan kept St. Joseph in the game as he threw 3.2 scoreless innings of relief.

The Mustangs end the season 36-17 and they fell short of a third consecutive MINK League Championship.  Sedalia advances to the MINK League Championship Series as they play a best-of-three series with South Division champion Ozark.  The Generals defeated Joplin 2-1 in the South Wild Card game Wednesday.  Game one of that series begins Thursday at Ozark.

Mustangs defeat Ozark in regular season finale; Wild Card playoff game moved to Wednesday

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs capped off their regular season Monday with a 4-3 win at Ozark.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team finishes the regular season 36-16 overall and 27-15 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the first inning with two runs in the third inning and two more in the fifth.

St. Joseph’s Brett Marr and Louis Mele finished with three hits each, while Kyle Uhrich went 2-for-5 with two RBI.

John Millan picked up the win in relief as he threw 2.2 scoreless innings.  Jonathan Lynch earned the save as he went four innings and didn’t allow a hit or a run.

The Mustangs, who finished second in the North Division, were scheduled to begin the MINK League playoffs Tuesday with a Wild Card game at Sedalia, but that game has now been moved to Wednesday.  Sedalia’s game on Monday against Nevada was rained out and has to be played Tuesday because it impacts the playoff race in the South Division.

St. Joseph will play the Bombers Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Liberty Park Stadium and will be broadcast on ESPN 1550 AM.  If the Mustangs win they’ll play in the MINK League Championship series, which is a best-of-three series that begins Thursday.

Mustangs clinch playoff birth despite loss to Clarinda

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had their five-game winning streak snapped Saturday as they lost to Clarinda 3-2 inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Despite the loss, St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team clinched a spot in the MINK League playoffs because of Chillicothe’s 8-2 loss at Sedalia.  The Mustangs are 1.5 games back of first-place Sedalia in the North Division. St. Joseph has to win their last two games and Sedalia has to drop its final game Monday for the Mustangs to win the division.

St. Joe gave up three unearned runs in the third inning to Clarinda and they turned out to be enough for the A’s.

The Mustangs scored two runs in the eighth inning but couldn’t push another run across as they fall to 35-15 and 26-14 in the MINK League.

Orencio Fisher and Kyle Uhrich each had three hits for St. Joseph as Uhrich and Jacob Richardson and one RBI a piece.

Logan Jacik (3-1) suffered the loss as he allowed the three unearned runs and four hits in seven innings of work.

Michael Lydon-Lorson (4-0) went eight innings to get the win on the mound.  He scattered 10 hits but allowed just one earned run.  Lydon-Lorson struck out five and walked one.

The Mustangs play their final home game of the regular season Saturday as they host Clarinda at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.
