Mustangs stay alive at NBC World Series with 10-8 win over Lake Erie

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs were able to stave off elimination Monday night at the NBC World Series in Wichita as they beat Lake Erie (MI) 10-8.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 37-16 and 2-1 at the NBC.  They’re now one of eight teams remaining in the national tournament and the Mustangs will play Haysville (KS) in another elimination game Wednesday night in Wichita at a time to be announced.

St. Joseph raced out to an 8-0 lead Monday night as they scored single runs in the first two innings and broke the game open with a six-run third inning.

Lake Erie battled their way back with two runs in the fifth, two more in the sixth and they put the tying runs on base in eighth as they scored four runs to pull within two.

Dalton Gulick got the final out of the eighth inning for the Mustangs and Trent Hill earned his third save with a scoreless ninth.

Mile Gully (5-1) picked up the win as he retired the first 12 batters he faced.  Gully have up four runs and four hits as he was taken out of the game after 5.2 innings of work.

Ramsey Scott led St. Joe’s 11-hit attack as he finished 4-for-5 with three RBI.  Trent HIll went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, while Orencio Fisher and Josh Cassidy added two hits each.

The Mustangs will play the Haysville Aviators at either 5:00 p.m. or 10:00 p.m. Wednesday at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.  The winner will advance to the Super Six at the NBC World Series.  The game will be broadcast on either ESPN 1550 or 680 KFEQ depending on the game time.

St. Joseph falls apart late in second round NBC loss to Santa Barbara

riggertMustangsFor the second straight season the St. Joseph Mustangs lost to Santa Barbara (CA) in the second round of the NBC World series in Wichita.  St. Joe’s summer college baseball team fell to the Foresters 10-3 on Sunday as they drop to 1-1 at the tournament and into the consolation bracket.

The Mustangs, who are now 36-16 overall this season, fell behind early 3-1 after three innings but rallied and tied the game 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning.

That’s when things fell apart for St. Joe.

Santa Barbara scored three unearned run to take a 6-3 lead as Mustangs’ shortstop Jackson Schnurbusch had three errors in the inning.

The Foresters added two more unearned runs in the seventh and then got a two-run home run in the eighth to finish off the scoring.

St. Joseph and Santa Barbara had 11 hits each but the Mustangs committed five errors on the night and struck out 15 times at the plate.  They also left 13 runners on the base.

Dixon Marble suffered the loss as he allowed six runs (two earned runs) and seven hits in 5.1 innings of work.

Josh Cassidy led the Mustangs offense as he finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored.  Francisco Alvarez and Orencio Fisher added two hits each.

St. Joseph opens NBC World Series with 8-4 win over Hutchinson

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs opened the NBC World Series in Wichita with an 8-4 victory over the Hutchinson (KS) Monarchs.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball is making its fifth appearance in their seven years of existance and they’re now 5-0 all-time in first round games.  The Mustangs improve to 36-15 overall this season.

St. Joseph jumped to to a quick lead as they scored three runs in the top half of the first inning.  Josh Cassidy hit a two-out single to score one run and then Tony Maselli drove in two runs on a two-out double.

Hutchinson scored a run in the bottom half of the first and then the Mustangs took control of the game as they scored five unanswered runs, three in the fourth inning and two more runs in the seventh.

All eight St. Joe runs came with two outs.

Trent Hill finished the game 4-for-5 with a run scored and one RBI, while Maselli and Orecio Fisher had two hits each.  Jacob Richardson added two RBI.

Preston Felgate earned his fifth win of the summer as he allowed four runs and ten hits in 6.2 innings of work.

The Mustangs move on the second round of the NBC World Series Sunday as they take on the defending championship Santa Barbara at 4:00 p.m.  The game will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.

Mustangs open NBC World Series Saturday morning against Hutchinson

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs will open the 81st Annual NBC World Series on Saturday as they play the Hutchinson (KS) Monarchs at 8:00 a.m. inside Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is 35-15 this season and they won their fourth MINK League Championship in the last five seasons.

Hutchinson is 22-14 this summer and they play in the Kansas Collegiate Baseball League.  They finished as the runners-up to Valley Center in the KCBL and both teams qualified for the NBC World Series.

The Mustangs are 10-8 all-time in Wichita with two top-six finishes.  They did play Hutchinson in 2011 and were eliminated from the tournament that season by the Monarchs as St. Joseph lost 7-3.

St. Joe and Hutch will play the first game of the day Saturday at 8:00 a.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN 1550 and here on StJosephPost.com.

Mustangs break season attendance record

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs set a new attendance record this season as St. Joe’s summer college baseball team saw a total of 61, 261 fans comes through the gates of Phil Welch Stadium.

General Manager Ky Turner released the season attendance numbers Monday and the Mustangs averaged 2,356 fans per game, which is the most in the organization’s seven year history.  Last year was the first season in which St. Joseph averaged over 2,000 fans per game.

The biggest crowd of 2015 came on June 6 when it was Super Hero night.  Captain America and Iron Man were at the ballpark and 5,176 fans came out to the game.

In 26 home dates this season, St. Joseph drew 3,000 fans 10 different times and had 4,000 fans twice.

The Mustangs are 35-15 this season and won their second consecutive MINK League championship, the organizations fourth in five seasons.

St. Joe will play in the NBC World Series at Wichita, Kansas for the fifth time.  The opponent, time and date are yet to be determined but they’ll likely open up on Friday or Saturday at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

Mustangs defeat Nevada to win 2015 MINK League Championship

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs captured their fourth MINK League championship in five seasons as they defeated Nevada 10-7 Friday in the league title game inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college advances to the National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series in Wichita, Kansas for the fifth time in their seven years of existance.

The Mustangs gave up an unearned run in the first inning, but bounced back with three runs in the third and four more in the fourth inning to take a 7-1 lead.

It didn’t last long as the Griffons rallied quickly with two runs in the fifth inning and they tied the game with four in the sixth.

St. Joseph took the lead for good in the seventh inning as they scored an unearned run to take the lead and Jerry Houston and Jackson Schnurbusch had consecutive RBI doubles to extend the lead to 10-7.

Austin Aspegren earned the win in relief for the Mustangs as he threw 1.1 scoreless innings.  Dixon Marble started the game and allowed six earned runs and 11 hits in 5.1 innings of work.

Houston, Schnurbusch and Ramsay Scott all had two hits each to lead St. Joe’s 11-hit attack, while Scott and Orencio Fisher each had two RBI.

The Mustangs are now 35-15 this season and will begin play in Wichita next Friday or Saturday as the schedule will be released early next week for the championship bracket of the NBC World Series.

St. Joseph drops regular season finale at Nevada, 7-3

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs lost their final regular season game Tuesday as they fell at Nevada 7-3.

This was a preview of the MINK League Championship game Friday at Phil Welch Stadium and was the last game of the regular season because the Mustangs and Sedalia Bombers mutually agreed to cancel their game on Thursday because it won’t matter in the league standings.  St. Joseph clinched the North Division title Monday at Chillicothe.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 34-15 and 27-14 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs, who had won their previous five meetings with the Griffons, gave up four runs in the second and could never catch up.

St. Joseph pulled to within 4-3 in the fifth inning, but Nevada answered back in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own.

Mitch Steinhoff suffered the loss for the Mustangs as he allowed all seven runs and nine hits in 4.1 innings of work.  He struck out two and walked three batters.

Josh Cassidy and Jackson Schnurbusch led St. Joe’s nine-hit attack as they each went 2-for-4.  Cassidy and Jordan Powell added one RBI each.

The Mustangs are off until Friday when they host Nevada in the MINK League Championship game.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium and it’ll be broadcast on ESPN 1550 and here on StJosephPost.com.

Mustangs clinch MINK League North title with 4-0 win at Chillicothe

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs clinched their fourth MINK League North Division Championship in the last five seasons as they won at Chillicothe Monday night 4-0.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 34-14 this season and 27-13 in league play.  The Mustangs will now play for the MINK League Championship Friday as they host South Division winner Nevada at 7:00 p.m. inside  Phil Welch Stadium.  St. Joseph has won three of the last four league titles.

Monday night’s game was scoreless until the eighth inning when Mustangs’ center fielder Jacob Richardson hit an RBI triple to score Jackson Schnurbusch, Richardson scored on a wild pitch and Josh Cassidy drove in Trent Hill with a two-out double.

St. Joe added an RBI double from Jerry Houston in the ninth inning as Logan Jacik (2-2) earned the win in relief.  Blake Kolons threw six scoreless innings before Jacik pitched the seventh and eighth innings.  Steve D’Amico threw a scoreless ninth.

Chillicothe had just four hits on the night, while Cassidy led the Mustangs with two hits.

The Mustangs have two regular season games remaining before the championship on Friday as they play at Nevada Tuesday and host Sedalia Thursday.  Both games begin at 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs defeat Sedalia in 10 innings, increase division lead to two games

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs picked up a big road win Sunday at Sedalia as they defeated the Bombers in 10 innings, 6-5.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 33-14 this season and 26-13 in the MINK League.  With the win, the Mustangs increase their lead over Sedalia to two games in the North Division.  St. Joseph has three scheduled games remaining and the Bombers have two.

The Mustangs, who had lost all four meetings with Sedalia this season, never trailed in Sunday game.  They did let 3-0 and 5-3 leads slip away before scoring an unearned run in the 10th inning to get the win.

Jacob Richardson led off the 10th with a line drive to center field that was misplayed by Jarod Perry and Richardson was able to get to third base.  Jerry Houston then got a base hit to right field to drive him in.

Austin Aspegren earned the win in relief as he went 2.1 innings and allowed just one hit and no runs.  Trent Hill got the final two outs of the 10th to get his second save of the season.

Miles Gulley started for St. Joseph and lasted six innings.  He allowed three runs on seven hits.

Hill, Houston, Ramsey Scott and Jordan Powell each had two hits, while Hill scored two runs and had two RBI.

Josh Cassidy, Scott Braren and Max Ayoub all had one RBI a piece on ground outs throughout the game.

The Mustangs are on the road Monday as they travel to Chillicothe.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and it’ll be broadcast on ESPN 1550 and here on StJosephPost.com.

St. Joseph blows ninth inning lead, loses to Joplin 7-5

riggertMustangsOne day after rallying from a two-run deficit in the ninth inning to defeat Nevada on a walk-off home run, the St. Joseph Mustangs let a ninth inning lead slip away Saturday as they fell at home to Joplin 7-5.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team led 5-4 entering the ninth inning and they turned to closer Steve D’Amico.  D’Amico, who had allowed just one earned run and six hits all season, blew his first save of the season as he allowed three runs on three hits.

D’Amico gave a single and then walked to batters to load the bases with one out.  He gave up a sacrafice fly to tie the game and then allowed a double with two outs to give Joplin the 7-5 lead.

The Mustangs were retired in order in the bottom of the ninth inning as they drop to 32-14 this season and 25-13 in the MINK League.  St. Joseph’s lead in the North Division is back to one game as Sedalia defeated Clarinda Saturday 7-2.  The Mustangs and Bombers will meet Sunday in Sedalia.

Trent Kinney started for St. Joe as he allowed four runs and five hits in four innings of work.

The Mustangs rallied from a 4-1 deficit Saturday as they scored two in the fourth inning and two more in the seventh before suffering their first loss when leading after eighth innings in two years.

Trent Hill and Kyle Richards led St. Joseph with two hits each, while Hill and Francisco Alvarez each drovein two runs.

The Mustangs game at Sedalia Sunday will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.
