Mustangs open NBC World Series Saturday against Alaska Goldpanners

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs will open the 80th NBC World Series in Wichita, Kansas on Saturday as they play the Alaska Goldpanners at 10:30 a.m.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is 40-16 this seaon and they won their third MINK League title in four years last week by defeating Sedalia in the MINK League Championship Series.

This is the fourth NBC appearance in the six year history of the Mustangs.  They’ve gone 9-6 in their three previous trips and St. Joseph has two top-six finishes in 2010 and 2012.

The Goldpanners are from Fairbanks, Alaska and are in their 55th year of playing summer college baseball.  This will be their 27th appearance at the NBC and they’ve won six national championship, including their most recent in 2002.

Alaska is 35-9 this season and they went 21-8 in the Alaska Baseball League.  They won the ABL title on Wednesday with a 2-1 victory over the Mat-Su Miners.

All games at the NBC World Series will be played at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium and Saturday’s game will be broadcast on ESPN 1550 AM & here on StJosephPost.com.

Mustangs defeat Sedalia to win 2014 MINK League Championship

MustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs won the 2014 MINK League Championship Friday night at Phil Welch Stadium as they defeated Sedalia 4-1 in game three of the MINK Championship series.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team wins the series two games to one after losing the opener at Sedalia Wednesday.  It’s the third MINK Leauge title in four years for the Mustangs and they’ve qualified for the championship bracket of the NBC World Series in Wichita for the fourth time in their six-year history.

St. Joseph broke a scoreless tie Friday night in the third inning with a two-out RBI infield single by Lucas Powers, but Sedalia came back to tie the game with a run of their own in the fourth inning.

The Mustangs then scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to extend their lead.  St. Joe scored on a balk in the fifth, Tanner Lubach drove in a run as he grounded into a fielders choice in the sixth inning and Kyle Richards had a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

That was more than enough for starting pitcher Brandon Baker.  The sophomore-to-be at Missouri went 7.2 innings and he allowed just one run on five hits.  Baker struck out two and walked two as he improves to 5-3 this summer.

Powers, Joe Koerper and Zac Johnson had two hits each in the game.

The Mustangs are now off for a week as the first week of the NBC World Series is underway, but St. Joseph is off until the championship bracket begins next Friday.  Sedalia has also qualified by winning the South Division but they have to turn around and play Saturday night at 10:00 p.m. inside Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

The Mustangs are now 40-16 this season and won’t know who or when they play at the NBC World Series until later in the week.

Mustangs stave off elimination, rally past Sedalia to force Game 3

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs rallied from a 3-0 deficit Thursday night in Game 2 of the MINK League Championship Series to defeat Sedalia 6-4 inside Phil Welch Stadium.

With the win, St. Joe’s summer college baseball team forces a winner-take-all Game 3 against the Bombers Friday night at Phil Welch.  The Mustangs will be going for their third MINK League title in four seasons.

Sedalia took control of the Game 2 early as they scored two runs in the first inning and added one more in the second to take a 3-0 lead after just an inning and a half.

St. Joseph responded quickly as they tied the game in the second with three runs of their own.  Zac Johnson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Evan McDonald had an RBI ground out and Lucas Powers capped off the inning with a two-out RBI single.

The Bombers regained the lead with one run in the fifth inning, but the Mustangs responded again as they tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a Tanner Lubach RBI single.

St. Joe then took the lead for the good in the sixth inning as Joe Koerper hit a two-out single to score McDonald.

Koerper led the Mustangs’ 12-hit attack as he finished 5-for-5 with four singles, one double and an RBI.  No other St. Joseph batter had a muilt-hit game but every Mustang had a base hit in the game except for Kyle Richards.

McDonald had two RBI and Brandon Huske scored two runs.

Trent Hill (4-0) earned the win in relief as he worked the final 3.2 innings, allowing only one hit and no runs.  He struck out four and walked one.

Jake Jones started for St. Joe but lasted just 4.2 innings and he allowed three earned runs and seven hits.

The Mustangs are now 39-16 this season and they’ll play the deciding Game 3 of the series Friday at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.  The winner will capture the MINK League championship and will earn a bye into the championship bracket of the NBC World Series.  The runner-up will still go to the NBC in Wichita but they’ll begin play on Saturday night.

Mustangs drop series opener at Sedalia 5-3

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs lost at Sedalia Wednesday night 5-3 as they trail the Bombers 1-0 in the best-of-three MINK League Championship Series.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team will have the next two games at home as they’ll have to win both to capture their third MINK League title in four years.

On Wednesday, the Mustangs (38-16) got off to a good start as they scored two runs in the second to take an early lead.  Kyle Richards had an RBI single and then Brandon Huske scored on an error by sedalia left fielder Hunter Leeper.

The Bombers struggled early against St. Joseph starter Ryker Fox as they didn’t get their first hit until the fourth inning, but they grabbed the lead in the fourth with three runs on the three hits.

Sedalia added one in the fifth inning before both teams traded runs in the seventh.

Fox (8-2) suffered just his second loss of the season as he went 6.0 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits.

Richards led the offense as he finished 3-for-3 with a double, RBI and a walk.  Joe Koerper drove in one run, while Huske, Lucas Powers and Tanner Lubach score one run each.

Game two of the series is Thursday at Phil Welch Stadium.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN 1550 AM and here on StJosephPost.com.

St. Joseph wins at Clarinda to wrap up home-field advantage

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs wrapped up home-field advantage in the MINK League Championship series as they won their regular season finale Monday at Clarinda 8-4.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team finishes the regular season 38-15 and 29-14 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs broke open a 3-2 game in the top of the sixth inning as they scored four runs to grab a 7-2 lead and then added another run in the eighth.

The A’s tallied two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning but St. Joseph went on to their fifth win in their last six games.

Mike Sherburne led the Mustangs offense as he finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and one run scored. Kyle Richards added three hits and Tanner Lubach drove in two runs.

Miles Gully started the game but received a no-decision as he lasted 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits.

Trent Kinney earned his third win in relief as he threw 2.1 scoreless innings.

The Mustangs play Sedalia in the best-of-three MINK League Championship series beginning Wednesday. Game one will be played at Sedalia with games two and three played inside St. Joseph’s Phil Welch Stadium. Game two is on Thursday and the if necessary game three will be on Friday. All games will start at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ or ESPN 1550, as well as here on StJosephPost.com.

St. Joseph went 3-1 against the Bombers during the regular season.

Mustangs win MINK League North title with split at Chillicothe

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs split a doubleheader at Chillicoathe Sunday night, winning game one 2-1 in eight innings before losing game two 4-2.

With the win in the opener, St. Joe’s summer college baseball team won the MINK League North Division title for the third time in four years and they’ll play in the MINK League championship series beginning Wednesday against South Division winner Sedalia.  The win also means the Mustangs have qualified for the NBC World Series in Wichita for the fourth time in their six-year history in St. Joseph.

In game one, the Mustangs got an RBI single from Joe Koerper in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead before the Mudcats came back to tie it in the fourth inning with a 2-out RBI single from Reyn Sugai.

Chillicothe had a chance to win the game in the seventh inning as they loaded the bases with no outs, but St. Joseph went to the bullpen and Trent Hill struck out the 3-4-5 batters for the Mudcats to send the game to extra innings.

Mike Sherburne gave the Mustangs the lead on a RBI infield single and Grant Gavin got the final two outs in the eight for his seventh save.

Hill went 1.1 innings of relief to get the win as he allowed one hit and he struck out four. Dixon Marble started the game and lasted 5.2 innings. He gave up just one run on six hits.

Hill also went 2-for-3 at the plate and he scored one runs, while Koerper also finished with two hits.

In game two, St. Joseph rallied from a 1-0 deficit as they scored two runs in the sixth inning, but Chillicothe answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth to regain the lead and get the victory.

The Mustangs had just three hits as they were no-hit through 5.2 innings, before getting three two-out base hits.  Ryan Abernathy and Joe Koerper each had an RBI single in the sixth, while Eric Wilcoxson also single and scored one run.

Blake Kolons suffered the loss as he allowed three runs and three hits in 5.1 innings of work.

St. Joe leads Sedalia by one game in the race for best record in the MINK League as they try and get home field advantage in the best-of-3 MINK League Championship series. Both teams have two games remaining and the magic number is one to clinch home field for the Mustangs.

St. Joseph travels to Clarinda Monday night for a 7:00 p.m. game against the A’s.

Mustangs roll past Clarinda 13-3 in regular season home finale

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs inched closer to wrapping up the MINK League North Division championship Saturday as they blew out Clarinda 13-3 inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 36-14 and 27-13 in the MINK League. They have a 2.5 game lead over Chillicothe with three games remaining. The Mustangs play a doubleheader at Chillicothe Sunday and if they win one game they’ll wrap up the division title.

St. Joseph jumped out to a quick lead in their regular season home finale Saturday as they they scored one run in the second and three in the third inning.

The Mustangs were in control all night and they blew the game open with a six-run seventh inning.

Five different Mustangs had mulitple hits as Trent Hill, Joe Koerper and Brandon Huske had three hits each. Hill drove in two runs and Tanner Lubach scored three times to lead St. Joe.

Jeremiah Figueroa (4-1) earned the win as he went six innings and allowed just two runs on seven hits.

Game one of the doubleheader Sunday between the Mustangs and the Mudcats will be at 5:05 p.m. in Chillicothe. The game will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ Am and here on StJosephPost.com.

St. Joseph extends division lead with sweep of Omaha

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs extended their lead in the MINK League North Division Friday night at Phil Welch Stadium as they swept a doubleheader from Omaha, 2-1 and 5-2.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 35-14 and 26-13 in league play. Chillicothe didn’t play Friday nigth so the Mustangs gained a full game on the second-place Mudcats as they now lead the North by two games.

In game one, the Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the third inning as Brandon Huske drove in Eric Wilcoxson with a one-out double.

The Diamond Spirit came back to tie the game in the fifth before St. Joseph picked up a walk-off win in the seventh inning. Mike Sherburne doubled with one out and then newly signed Tanner Lubach had an RBI single to send the Mustangs to victory.

Lubach, who played for St. Joseph two years ago, was playing in his first game back and he finished 1-for-2 with a walk and that RBI. Sherburne led the Mustangs as he finished 2-for-3.

Brandon Baker earned the win as he threw a seven-inning complete game. He allowed just one run on three hits.

In game two, st. Joe rallied from a 2-0 deficit to get the sweep.

The Mustangs got one run back in the fourth inning and then scored two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Lucas Powers finish 3-for-4 with thee doubles, a run scored and one RBI. Fernando Alvarez added two hits and Ryan Abernathy had one hit and one RBI.

Ryker Fox improved to 8-1 as he went six innings and allowed three hits and two unearned runs. Grant Gavin earned his sixth save of the season with a perfect seventh inning.

St. Joseph will play their final home game of the regular season Saturday night as they host Clarinda inside Phil Welch Stadium. The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and it’ll be broadcast on ESPN 1550 AM and here on StJospehPost.com.

Mustangs split with Chillicothe; remain in first place

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs split a doubleheader with Chillicothe Thursday night at Phil welch Stadium, winning game one 5-3 and losing game two 7-4.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team remains in first place in the MINK League’s North Division as they lead Chillicothe by one game.

In game one, the Mustangs rallied to win as they fell behind 2-0 in the first inning but exploded for five runs in the third and that was all they’d need.

Dixon Marble went five innings to get the win as he allowed three runs on five hits. Trent Hill threw two scoreless innings to seal the victory.

Mike Sherburne led St. Joseph with two hits and an RBI, while Kyle Richards drove in two runs.

In game two, the Mustangs had to rally again as they fell behind 4-0 before tying the game with two runs in the both the fourth and fifth innings.

Chillicothe finally got to St. Joe starter Jake Jones in the seventh inning as they scored three runs to break the tie and get the win. Jones struck out 10 and walked one in 6.1 innings. He allowed four earned runs and six hits.

No Mustang had a mulit-hit game, but Zac Johnson had a single and drove in two runs, while Sherburne added one RBI.

St. Joseph is now 33-14 and 24-13 in the MINK League. They play another doubleheader Friday night as they host Omaha inside Phil Welch Stadium. The first pitch of game one is set for 5:30 p.m.

Mustangs get blanked at home by Clarinda 3-0

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs were shut out for the second time in three games Tuesday night as they lost to Clarinda 3-0 inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team falls to 32-13 overall and 23-12 in the MINK League. Chillicothe defeated Nevada Tuesday 5-4 and now the Mustangs’ lead over the Mudcats is down to just 1.5 games.

Clarinda scored on three runs in the second inning as they had four hits in the inning, including an RBI triple by Ethan Mohan and an RBI double by D’Marco Poindexter.

The Mustangs struggled offensively all night as they had just five hits. St. Joseph had mulitple runners on base three times and failed to get a hit with runners in scoring position.

Eric Wilcoxson, Ryan Abernathy, Trent Hill, Mike Sherburne and Nick Sebastian each had a single for the Mustangs.

St. Joe starter Miles Gulley (3-3) suffered the loss as he went seven innings and allowed three runs on eight hits. He struck out five and walked three.

The Mustangs are off Wednesday before playing a doubleheader Thursday night against Chillicothe at Phil Welch Stadium. The first pitch of game one is set for 5:30 p.m. and both games will air live on 680 KFEQ & here on StJosephPost.com.
