Mustangs get big road win at Joplin Monday

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs bounced back from a shutout loss at Omaha Sunday as they went to Joplin Monday night and defeated the Outlaws 4-3.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 32-12 this season and 22-11 in the MINK League.  The Mustangs got help from Omaha Monday as well as they defeated Chillicothe twice to give St. Joseph a two-game lead over Chillicothe in the North Division race.

The Mustangs fell behind 3-1 after two innings, but they battled back to tie the game in the third with two runs.  Mike Sherburne had an RBI double and then he scored on a double steal.

St. Joe took the lead back in the fifth inning as they scored an unearned run and that was enough for the Mustangs’ pitching staff.

Kevin Sweeney, who just signed with the Mustangs, made his first career start and he earned the victory.  Sweeney went seven innings and he allowed three runs on eight hits, while striking out six and walking just one.

Austin Aspegren and Grant Gavin threw two hitless innings to secure the win as Gavin picked up his fifth save of the season.

Joe Koerper led the Mustangs’ offense as he finished 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI.  Brandon Huske and Nick Sebastian added two hits each.

St. Joseph returns to Phil Welch Stadium Tuesday night as they host Clarinda at 7:00 p.m.  The game will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.

St. Joseph gets shut out at Omaha Sunday

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had their four-game winning streak snapped Sunday night at Omaha as they lost 2-0.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team drops to 31-12 this season and 21-11 in the MINK League.

Omaha scored single runs in the third and fifth innings against Mustangs’ starter Brandon Baker, but both were unearned because of three St. Joseph errors.

The Mustangs had grea chances to score runs Sunday. In both the third and eighth innings as they had runners at second and third base with just one out, but were unable to get a hit and were shut out for the fourth time this season.

Baker went five innings and allowed six hits.  He struck out five and walked two.  Jon Pomatto and Trent Hill combined to throw three scoreless innings of relief to keep St. Joe close.

The Mustangs had just six hits in the game and no one had mulitple hits.  Hill, Brandon Huske, Joe Koerper, Kyle Richards, Francisco Alvarez and Josh Cassidy each had a single Sunday night.

The Mustangs stay on the road Monday for a game at Joplin.  The first pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs roll to doubleheader sweep of Ozark 2-0 & 8-3

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs earned their second consecutive doubleheader sweep against a MINK League South Division opponent Saturday night at Phil Welch Stadium, as they beat Ozark 2-0 and 8-3.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team has now won 10 of 11 games as they’re 31-11 this season and 21-10 in league play.

In game one, Mustangs’ starter Ryker Fox threw a seven-inning complete game as he allowed just three hits.  Fox improves to 7-1 this summer and his ERA is at 1.01.

St. Joseph scored single runs in the first and second innings as Joe Koeper had a RBI single and Josh Cassidy drove in a run with a double.  Francisco Alvarez led the Mustangs with two hits and he also scored one run.

In game two, St. Joe fell behind 2-1 in the second inning agaisnt Ozark but that didn’t last long as the Mustangs bounced back with three in the third and they never trailed again.

Kyle Richards and Trent Hill the Mustangs as he each had two hits and two RBI.  Richards added three runs scored, while Eric Wilcoxson scored twice.

Blake Kolons made his first start of the season as he earned the win.  He went five innings and allowed six hits and three unearned runs.  Kolons struck out three and walked just one.

St. Joseph is on the road Sunday night as they play at Omaha.  The first pitch is at 6:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ AM & here on StJosephPost.com.

Mustangs stay hot with sweep of Branson

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs swept a doubleheader against Branson Friday night at Phil Welch Stadium, defeating the Nationals 4-0 and 10-4.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team has now won eight of its last nine games as they improve to 29-11 and they’re 19-10 in the MINK League.

In the opener, the game was scheduled as a seven-inning game but it went extras as the game was scoreless until the ninth inning when the Mustangs exploded for four runs to get the win.

St. Joseph, who was the visiting team because the game was a make-up from a rain out in Branson last month, got their first run on an RBI single from Ryan Abernathy.  Then Trent Hill drove in two runs and Abernathy scored the final run on a double steal.

Hill earned the win in relief as he threw two scoreless innings.  Jeremiah Figueroa started the game and he went five innings, allowing only two hits.  The National only had three hits the enitre game.

In game two, the Mustangs jumped out to a quick lead as they scored two in the first inning, two more in the third and four runs in the fourth inning.

Branson scored four in the sixth, but that was as close as they’d get as Jake Jones earned the win for St. Joe.

He threw five scoreless innings and allowed just three hits.  Jones struck out seven and walked two.

Mike Sherburne went 3-for-4 in the nightcap as he also drove in three runs.  Abernathy and Joe Koeper added two hits, two runs and two RBI each.

The Mustangs play another doubleheader Saturday night as they host Ozark inside Phil Welch Stadium.  The first pitch of game one is set for 5:00 p.m.

St. Joseph suffers 2-1 loss at home to Clarinda Thursday

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had their six-game winning streak snapped Thursday night at Phil Welch Stadium as the lost to Clarinda 2-1.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 27-11 and 17-10 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning as Brandon Huske scored on a Joe Koerper ground out.  That was all St. Joseph would get though as Clarinda pitchers allowed just six hits and none after the sixth inning.

Dixon Marble suffered the loss despite throwing well as he is now 0-2 this summer.  Marble went seven innings and allowed two runs on eight hits.  He struck out two and walked two batters.

Clarinda scored single runs in the fourth and seventh innings and that was enough to hold off the Mustangs.

St. Joseph is back at Phil Welch Friday for a doubleheader with the Branson Nationals.  The first pitch of game one is set for 5:30 p.m.

Mustangs win sixth straight as they hold off Omaha 3-2

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs equaled their longest winning streak of the season Wednesday night as the beat Omaha 3-2 for their sixth straight win.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 27-10 and 17-9 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning as Joe Koerper and Nick Sebastian had RBI singles and then in the fifth, Ryan Abernathy drove in a run with a double.

St. Joseph held a 3-0 lead until the seventh as Omaha made it intersting with one run in the seventh inning and they added one in the ninth off Mustangs’ closer Grant Gavin.  Gavin was able to get out of the inning and pick up his fourth save of the season.

Miles Gully started and earned the win as he went 6.0 innings and allowed just one run on four hits.  He struck out three and walked three batters.

Abernathy was the only Mustangs with mulitple hits as he finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

St. Joe is back at home Thursday as they host Clarinda at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Mustangs rally past Clarinda for fifth straight win

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs won their fifth consecutive game Sunday night as they rallied for an 11-10 victory at Clarinda.

St. Joe’s summmer college baseball team improves to 26-10 this season and they’re 16-9 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs fell behind 10-9 after seven innings, but Ryan Abernathy scored on a wild pitch by the A’s Jason McDonald and then Kyle Richards hit a 2-out RBI single to score Trent Hill and give St. Joseph the lead back.

There were seven lead changes in the game as both pitching staffs struggled in the 3 1/2 hour game.

The Mustangs used six pitchers, while Clarinda used five and the two teams combined to walk 19 batters and hit four more.

St. Joe starter Brandon Baker was taken out after just one inning as he allowed four runs on four hits.  Jon Pomatto worked 1.2 scoreless innings to get the win, while Grant Gavin earned his third save of the summer as he threw a scoreless ninth inning.

Joe Koerper led the Mustangs’ offense as he went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored.  Richards drove in two runs while Abernathy scored four runs and Hill added three runs scored.

St. Joseph is off Monday and they return to Phil Welch Stadium Tuesday for a non-league game against Baldwin City.  The first pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.

Sherburne’s home run lifts St. Joseph past Nevada

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs won their fourth consecutive game Saturday night at Phil Welch Stadium as St. Joe’s summer college baseball team defeated Nevada 3-2.

The Mustangs got a three-run home run from Mike Sherburne in the fifth inning and that was all the St. Joe pitcher staff would need.

Ryker Fox (6-1) earned the win as he went 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on eight hit.  Fox struck out seven and walked three batters.

Fox gave up two, two-out base hits to Jake Alexander as he drove in both Nevada runs.  The Griffons took the lead in the third and pulled within one run in the seventh inning.

Austin Aspegren got the Mustangs out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh inning and Jon Pomatto did the same thing in the eighth.  Grant Gavin then worked a perfect ninth inning to earn his second save of the summer.

Sherburne’s homer in the fifth came after Trent Hill reached base on an error and Joe Koerper was hit by a pitch.

Both team had multiple opportunities to score as they each left 12 men on base.

St. Joseph improves to 25-10 and 15-9 in the MINK League.  They’re back in action Sunday night as they play at Clarinda.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ & here on StJosephPost.com.

Mustangs outlast Sedalia in 14 innings Friday night

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs went to extra innings for the second consecutive game Friday night and they were able to outlast Sedalia 3-2 in 14 innings inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball is now 24-10 and they’re 14-9 in the MINK League.

Sedalia scored a run in the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead, but the Mustangs scored two unearned runs in the sixth to grab their first lead in the game.

Zac Johnson hit a ground ball to third and Tony Sandifer made an error that allowed Mike Sherburne and Joe Koerper to score.

The Bombers rally to tie the game with a run in the eighth inning off Mustangs’ starter Jake Jones, who left the game after 7.2 innings.

Jones allowed two runs and six hits, while striking out five and walking four batters.

The score remained 2-2 until the 14th inning when Sherburne hit a 2-out infield single to shortstop to get the walk-off win.  The 14 inning game tied the longest game in Mustangs’ history.

Trent Hill earned the win in relief and he threw 4.2 scoreless innings.  He struck out three and didn’t allow a hit.

St. Joseph is back inside Phil Welch Stadium night as they host Nevada at 7:00 p.m.  The game will be broadcast on ESPN 1550 AM and here on StJosephPost.com.
