St. Joseph blanks Omaha for fourth straight victory

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs won their fourth consecutive game Tuesday afternoon with a 6-0 victory at Omaha.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 10-3 this season and 5-3 in the MINK League.

Mustangs’ starter Ryker Fox continued his phenomenal start to the summer as he threw seven shutout innings to improve to 3-0 and he now has a 0.45 ERA.  Fox struck out six batters, walked two and he allowed just four hits.

St. Joseph broke a scoreless tie in the sixth innings with four runs.  Ryan Abernathy had an RBI double, Mike Sherburne drove in one run with a single and Zac Johnson doubled home two runs in the inning.

The Mustangs added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings, including Joe Koerper’s first home run of the season.

St. Joe returns to Phil Welch Stadium Wednesday for a non-league game against the North Kansas City Apartments.  First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. and will air on 680 KFEQ AM.

Mustangs’ games get postponed again Monday

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had another doubleheader postponed because of rain.  One day after their two games were called at Ozark Sunday, St. Joseph’s twin bill Monday against the Branson Nationals in Bolivar was also postponed.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team sits at 9-3 this season and 4-3 in MINK League play as they’ve won three consecutive games after dropping three of four.

The two games with Branson will be made up in St. Joseph as they will now play doubleheaders with the Nationals on June 20th and July 11th.  Branson was originally scheduled for single games on each of those days.

The Mustangs are back in action Tuesday as they play at Omaha (3-4).  The first pitch has been moved from 7:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Three current or former Mustangs selected in MLB Draft

riggertMustangsThree players with St. Joseph Mustangs ties were selected in the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft over the weekend.

Current Mustangs’ infielder Nate Winfrey was selected with the 848th pick in the 28th round by the Cleveland Indians.  Winfrey, a freshman from Maple Woods Community College, played in nine games for St. Joseph this summer.  Winfrey batted .211 with a double, three RBIs, and eleven walks.

Former Mustangs’ pitcher Bubba Blau was taken in the 24th round (716th overall) by the Milwaukee Brewers. In 2014 with Dixie State, Blau went 1-1 with a 2.92 ERA in 16 relief appearances.

And former St. Joseph outfielder Griff Gordon was selected with the 812th pick in the 27th round by the New York Yankees. Gordon played for Jacksonville State this season and led the Gamecocks with a .380 average.  He also had seven home runs, 50 RBI and 55 runs scored.

St. Joseph’s doubleheader at Ozark postponed Sunday

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had their doubleheader at Ozark postponed Sunday evening because of rain.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team sits at 9-3 this season and 4-3 in MINK League play as they’ve won three consecutive games after dropping three of four.

The Mustangs are back in action Monday afternoon as they play a doubleheader against the newest MINK League team, the Branson Nationals.

The Nationals, who are 2-4 this season, are playing their home games in Bolivar at Southwest Baptist University.

The first pitch of game one Monday is set for 2:00 p.m.

St. Joseph needs just two hits to defeat Joplin, 5-2

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs won their third consecutive game Saturday night as they defeated Joplin, 5-2, inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 9-3 overall and 4-3 in MINK League play.

The Mustangs won the game with just two hits on Saturday as they took advantage of Joplin’s mistakes.  The Outlaws committed two errors, walked four batters and had two wild pitches.

St. Joseph scored single runs in the first two innings to grab an early lead.  Ryan Abernathy reached on an error in the first and scored on a wild pitch.

Then Zac Johnson singled to lead off the second inning and scored on an RBI groundout by Francisco Alvarez.

Joplin scored one run in the sixth before the Mustangs scored three in the bottom half of the sixth to get seperation from the Outlaws.

Abernathy scored on an error, Mike Sherburne came home on an RBI groundout by Andrew Standifer and Joe Koerper scored on another wild pitch.

Brandon Baker earned the win for St. Joe as he went went seven innings, allowing just four htis and one run. Baker is now 1-1 as he struck out six and walked one.

The Mustangs are back in action Sunday as they play a doubleheader at Ozark.  The first pitch of game one is set for 5:00 p.m.

Mustangs use early offense, great pitching to take down Clarinda

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs won a pitchers dual Thursday night at Phil Welch Stadium, defeating the Clarinda A’s 4-2.

Kyle Gehrs earned the win for St. Joe’s summer college baseball team as he went 7.2 innings and allowed one earned run and three hits.  He struck out 10 batters and walked six.

Brett Ash walked two in the ninth but he earned his fifth save of the summer in five chances.

The Mustangs offense was able to generate only five hits Thursday, but they scored three of their four runs in the opening inning to earn the win.

In the first, Mike Sherburn hit an RBI triple, scored on a wild pitch and Zac Johnson had a single with two outs to score Joe Koerper.

St. Joseph improves to 8-3 on the season and they’re 3-3 in the MINK League.  The Mustangs play an exhibition game Friday night at Phil Welch as they play a team of former Mustang players in the first St. Joseph Mustangs Alumni game.  First pitch is at 7:00 p.m.

St. Joseph splits doubleheader against Chillicothe

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs split a doubleheader with Chillicothe on Wednesday night at Phil Welch Stadium, losing game one 4-0 and winning the nightcap 4-1.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 7-3 this season and 2-3 in the MINK League.

In game one, the Mustangs offense only managed four hits against the Mudcats in the 4-0 loss.

Zac Johnson led the way for St. Joseph as he had two hits Thursday, and Eric Wilcoxson added a double.

Trent Kinney fell to 1-1 as he went 4.2 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs.

In game two, Chillicothe took an eearly lead as they scored one run in the first inning.

That was all the Mudcats could muster again four different St. Joe pitchers.

Jermiah Figueroa is now 1-1 as he went 4.1 innings, allowing six hits and one run.

Austin Aspegren, Jon Pomatto and Brett Ash finished off the game as Ash earned his four save of the season.

No Mustang had more than one hit, but Joe Koerper and Evan MCDonald each had one RBI.

St. Joseph is back in action Thursday as they host Joplin at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Mustangs lose second straight as they fall at Nevada, 7-4

riggertMustangsAfter opening the season with five consecutive wins, the St. Joseph Mustangs have dropped back-to-back game as they lost Sunday at Nevada, 7-4.

Both losses for St. Joe’s summer college baseball team came to the Griffons, who won at Phil Welch Stadium Saturday 8-1.

Nevada scored in the first inning for the second straight game against the Mustangs as Brandon Huske committed an error with two outs that allowed two runs to score.

The Griffons built a 6-1 after three innings as they scored two runs in each of the first three innings.  The only run for St. Joseph in that stretch came in the third when Francisco Alvarez drove in Matthew Johnson with double.

The Mustangs then got a two-out, two-run home run from Mike Sherburne to pull within 6-3, but that was as close as St. Joe would get.

Missouri’s Brandon Baker suffered the loss for the Mustangs as the allowed six runs and eight hits in six innings of work.  Only three of the runs were earned as St. Joseph committed a season-high five errors.

Alvarez and Sherburne led with offense with two hits each, while Nate Winfrey also had one RBI.

The Mustangs are now 5-2 this season and 1-2 in MINK League play and they’re off on Monday before traveling to Chillicothe Tuesday for their first meeting with the Mudcats.

St. Joseph suffers first loss as they fall to Nevada

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs suffered their first loss of the season Saturday night as they fell to Nevada, 8-1, inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team drops to 5-1 and 1-1 in the MINK League.

Nevada scored one run in the first inning as the Mustangs trailed for the first time all season and then the Griffons added three more in the third.

St. Joseph’s only run came on an RBI ground out by Evan McDonald in the fourth inning that scored Joe Koerper.

Dixon Marble suffered the loss for the Mustangs as he allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings of work.

McDonald and Ryan Abernathy had two hits each to lead the St. Joseph offense.

The Mustangs will try and bounce back against the Griffons as they travel to Nevada on Sunday for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch.  The game will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ AM & here on StJosephPost.com.

St. Joe’s win streak reaches five with 2-1 victory over Joplin

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs won their fifth straight game to open the 2014 season as they defeated Joplin Saturday inside Phil Welch Stadium, 2-1.

It’s the first league game of the year for St. Joe’s summer college baseball team as they improve to 5-0.

Zac Johnson drove in Joe Koerper with a single in the first inning to give the Mustangs the lead, but the Outlaws tied it in the third.

St. Joe regained the lead in the fourth inning as Ryan Abernathy had a two-out RBI single that drove in Brady Anderson.

Kyle Gehrs earn the win as he went six innings, allowing just three hits and one unearned run.  He struck out four batters and walked one.
Brett Ash came on the ninth and struck out two batters with a runner in
scoring position to earn his third save of the season.

The Mustangs are back at home Saturday as they host Nevada in a MINK League game at Phil Welch Stadium.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and it’ll be broadcast on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.
