St. Joseph defeats Sedalia 1-0 as Fox wins fifth game

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs picked up their second consecutive shutout as they blanked Sedalia, 1-0, Friday night inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 18-6 overall this season and 11-6 in MINK League play.

The Mustangs scored the only run of the game in the fourth inning as Joe Koerper, Mike Sherburne and Zac Johnson each singled to start the inning and Brandon Huske grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, but Koerper scored on the play.

That was more than enough support for the St. Joseph pitcher staff.

Ryker Fox went 6.1 innings to earn the win as he is now 5-0 this summer with a 0.28 ERA.  He allowed just three hits, while striking out three, walking four and hitting four other batters.

Brett Ash worked a perfect ninth inning for his ninth save in nine chances this summer.

Koerper and Sherburne had two hits each to lead the Mustangs’ six-hit attack.

Mustangs sweep Branson; Jones throws no-hitter

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs cruised to two easy victories Friday night at Phil Welch Stadium as they swept a doubleheader against Branson, 18-6 & 3-0.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 17-6 this season and they’re 10-6 in MINK League play.

The story of the night played out in game two as Missouri Western graduate Jake Jones made his first start of the season for the Mustangs and he threw a seven inning no-hitter.  Jones allowed just one walk and he struck out three as he faced just one over the minimum.  Both games were seven inning games because of the doubleheader.

St. Joseph had just five hits in the nightcap but scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings.  Ryan Abernathy drove in two runs and Kyle Richards had an RBI single.

In game one, the Mustangs offense finally got going as they had been averaging only 4.5 runs per game but they exploded for 18 on Friday night.

St. Joe trailed 2-0 after one inning and the game was tied 3-3 after four.  That’s when the Mustangs came alive.

They scored eight runs in the fifth inning, one in the sixth and six more in the top of the seventh as they were the visiting team in game one.

Mike Sherburne, Nick Sebastian and Zac Johnson each drove in three runs, while Joe Koerper added three hits and three runs scored.

St. Joe had 13 total hits in the game but got help from six Branson errors.

Redmond Floyd picked up the win in relief as he just 1.2 innings, but he didn’t allowed a hit or run and he struck out three.

The Mustangs wrap up their four-game homestand Saturday night as they host Sedalia.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ & here on StJosephPost.com.

St. Joseph returns home and falls to Omaha, 3-2

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs suffered just their third loss at home Thursday night as they returned to Phil Welch after a five-game road trip and lost to Omaha, 3-2.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 15-6 overall and 8-6 in the MINK League.  St. Joseph drops to 10-3 inside Phil Welch this season.

Omaha broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning as Jordyn Van Atta hit a two-out, two-run single to give the Diamond Spirit the lead.

The Mustangs rallied to tie the game as Joe Koerper had an RBI groundout in the sixth inning to score a run and Francisco Alvarez had an RBI single in the seventh.

Omaha took the lead for good in the top of the ninth inning as Quinton Urban had an RBI single off Jon Pomatto and St. Joseph was held scoreless in the bottom of the ninth.

Ryan Abernathy and Mike Sherburne led the way for the Mustangs with two hits each.

Jeremiah Figueroa started for St. Joe and lasted just 4.2 innings.  He allowed four hits and two runs, but walked four and didn’t strick out a batter.

The Mustangs are back at home Friday for a doubleheader against Branson.  The first pitch of game one is set for 5:30 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Mustangs bounce back, hold off Omaha for 5-4 road win

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs bounced back from a loss at Omaha Tuesday as they returned to Omaha Wednesday night and beat the Diamond Spirit, 5-4.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 15-5 and 8-5 in MINK League play as they had to hold off a late Omaha rally for the win.

The Mustangs led 5-0 going into the eighth inning, but Omaha scored two in the eighth and two more in the ninth inning before St. Joseph turned to closer Brett Ash to get the final out with two on base for his eighth save of the season.

The Mustangs scored three in the third inning to break a scoreless tied as Evan McDonald scored on a throwing error and then Ryan Abernathy hit a two-out, two-run home run.

St. Joseph added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings as Zac Johnson hit a two-out, solo homer in the fourth and Abernathy had a two-out single to score Andrew Standifer.

Trent Kinney improved to 3-1 this summer with the win as he went 7.2 innings, allowed just two runs on six hits.  He struck out five and walked just one.

Jon Pomatto gave up two runs in the ninth inning before he gave way to Ash.

The Mustangs return to Phil Welch Stadium Thursday night as they host Omaha at 7:00 p.m.  The game will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.

St. Joseph Mustangs fall at Omaha Tuesday, 4-2

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had their brief two-game road winning streak snapped Tuesday as they fell on the road at Omaha, 4-2.

The loss drops St. Joe’s summer college baseball team to 14-5 this season and 7-5 in MINK League play.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning Nick Sebastian was hit by a pitch and Central graduate Hayden Steele drove him in with a double.

The lead would evaporate in the fifth inning as Omaha would scored two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

St. Joseph got one run back in the eighth inning as Benton graduate Lucas Powers scored on error by Omaha shortstop Ryan Grotjohn, but that’s all the Mustangs would get.

Miles Gully suffered the loss as he went 5.1 innings and allowed five hits and four runs.  He struck out seven and walked three.

The Mustangs are back in Omaha Wednesday as they play the Diamond Spirit at 7:00 p.m.  The game will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.

St. Joseph makes it eight of nine, defeats Chillicothe 4-2

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs won their second straight road game as they defeated Chillicothe 4-2 at Shaffer Park Monday night.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team has now won eight of their last nine games as they improve to 14-4 overall and 7-4 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs jumped out to a quick lead Monday as they scored three runs in the top of the first inning.

Joe Koerper had an RBI double to start the scoring and then Josh Cassidy and Zac Johnson drove in one run each.

Those three runs proved to be enough for the St. Joseph pitching staff.

Starter Ryker Fox didn’t allow a run and gave up just one hit over six innings as he improves to 4-0.

Chillicothe scored two runs in the seventh inning to pull within one run.  Tanner Smith allowed two runs on two walks as he failed to get an out.

Grant Gavin came in to get the next six outs, striking out five.  Then Brett Ash allowed one hit in the ninth but he picked up his seventh save of the season.

Mustangs’ shortstop Matthew Johnson had an RBI groudout in the eighth inning for St. Joe’s final run.

The Mustangs are back on the road Tuesday as they play at Omaha.  The first pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs use dominate pitching to win at Sedalia Sunday

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs won at Sedalia Sunday night, 3-1, as they bounced back from a loss against the Bombers on Friday.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 13-4 and 6-4 in the MINK League.

Sedalia struck first Sunday night as Trey Hair singled to leadoff the game and he scored on an error by Mustangs’ third baseman Evan McDonald.

That was the only hit the Bombers would get against St. Joseph starter Brandon Baker.  He went seven innings, striking out six and walking just one.

Austin Aspegren gave up a single in the eighth inning, but no runs.  And Brett Ash worked a perfect ninth inning for his sixth save of the summer.

The Mustangs scored single runs in the third, fourth and eighth innings.  McDonald, Ryan Abernathy and Joe Koerper each drove in one run, while Francisco Alvarez went 3-for-4 at the plate.

St. Joseph is back on the road Monday as the play at Chillicothe.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m.

St. Joseph falls at Sedalia Friday night, 10-2

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had their six-game win streak snapped Friday night at Sedalia as they lost to the Bombers, 10-2.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team drops to 12-4 this season and 5-4 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs fell behind 1-0 in the second inning before tying the game in the top of the third as Ryan Abernathy had an RBI single that scored Eric Wilcoxson.

It was all Sedalia after that.

The Bombers chased St. Joseph starter Jerimiah Figueroa in the third inning as they exploded for five runs.  Sedalia added three more in the fifth inning and one run in the eighth.

St. Joe’s only other run came in the fifth when Wilcoxson scored on an Abernathy double.  Abernathy ended with three hits, while Mike Sherburne added two.

Figueroa suffered his first loss of the summer as he lasted just 2.1 innings, allowed five earned runs and five hits.

The Mustangs committed three errors Friday as Sedalia scored four unearned runs.

St. Joseph is back at home Saturday for an exhibition game at Phil Welch Stadium against the Missouri Western alumni.  First pitch is at 7:00 p.m.

St. Joseph extends win streak with 9-1 victory over B.J. Raiders

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs extended their season-high win streak to six games Thursday night with a 9-1 non-league win against the B.J. Raiders at Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 12-3 this season and they’re 7-0 against non-league teams.

The Mustangs broke a scoreless tie in the fourth as Hayden Steele had an RBI single and Brandon Huske drove in a run on a fielder’s choice.

St. Joseph then broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning as Eric Wilcoxson and Mike Sherburne each had a triple in the inning, and Joe Koerper added a double as the Mustangs had six hits in the fifth.

That was more than enough for St. Joe’s starting pitcher Trent Kinney.  He went seven innings, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out five batters.

Koerper had three hits in the game and two RBI, while Sherburne, Steele, Brandon Huske and Kyle Richards added two hits each.  Huske also drove in three runs and Sherburne scored four times.

The Mustangs are back in MINK League play Friday as they play at Sedalia.  The first pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs rally from 4-0 deficit to defeat North Kansas City

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs rallied for an 8-4 victory against North Kansas City in a non-league game Wednesday night at Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team extends its win streak to five games as they’re now 11-3 this season.

The Mustangs fell behind 4-0 in the sixth inning before starting their rally.

St. Joseph scored two in the bottom of the sixth as Evan McDonald scored on a wild pitch and Brady Anderson hit a sacrafice fly to score Ryan Abernathy.

Austin Aspregren came on in relief for the Mustangs in the seventh inning and got out of a bases loaded jame as he induced a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.

St. Joe then sent 11 men to the plate in the eighth inning as they scored six runs to take the lead.

The highlight of the eighth came when Anderson hit a 3-run double to give the Mustangs their first lead at 5-4.  Kyle Richards added an RBI single and Jeremiah Figueroa hit a 2-run single to cap off the inning.

Aspegren went the final 2.2 innings for the win as he didn’t allow a hit or a run, while striking out three and walking one.

St. Joseph is back at home Thursday as they host another Ban Johnson League team in the B.J. Raiders.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ AM.
