St. Joseph suffers fourth straight loss as they fall to Clarinda, 2-1

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs lost their fourth consecutive game Thursday night at Phil Welch Stadium as they fell to Clarinda, 2-1.

The four-game skid is the longest this season for St. Joe’s summer college baseball team as they drop to 24-19 and 20-19 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs scored their run in the fifth inning to take a 1-0 lead as Griff Gordon drove in Kyle Richards with a sacrafice fly.

That run looked like it might be enough for St. Joe starter Brandon Simmons, but in the seventh inning Clarinda’s Dean Long hit a two-out, two-run single to centerfield to give the A’s the lead and eventually the win.

Simmons went seven innings and allowed just five hits and the two runs.  He struck out four and didn’t walk a batter.

Lucas Powers and Shane O’Connell led the Mustangs as they each went 3-for-4, while Richards finished 2-for-3.

St. Joseph is back at home Friday as they host Omaha at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Mustangs drop third straight game as they lose to Chillicothe, 9-3

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs suffered their third consecutive loss Wednesday night as they fell at home to the Chillicothe Mudcats, 9-3.

Chillicothe struck early and often as they scored one run in the first inning, three more in the second and four runs in the fourth inning.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team was down 4-0 when they struck for two in the bottom of the third, but the Mudcats came right back in the next half inning to make it 8-2 and the Mustangs never threatened Chillicothe.

Colten Howell started for St. Joe but he lasted only 3.2 innings, allowing eight runs on 10 hits and falling to 0-2 this summer.

Joe Koerper led St. Joseph’s 12-hit attack as he went 3-for-4, while Lucas Powers, Zac Johnson and Jeremy Monty added two hits each.

The Mustangs are now 24-18 this season and 20-18 in the MINK League.

St. Joe is back at home Thursday as they host Clarinda at 7:00 p.m.  The game will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.

St. Joseph loses to Sedalia in 12 innings on walk-off HBP

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs suffered their second consecutive disappointing loss Tuesday as they fell in 12 innings at Sedalia, 3-2.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team falls to 24-17 and 20-17 in the MINK League.  They are now four games back of Clarinda in the North Division after the A’s defeated Chillicothe, 6-3.

After a walk-off loss Monday at Clarinda, Sedalia got a walk-off win as well Tuesday as Mustangs’ pitcher Steve Moyers hit Nick Delorenzo with a pitch when the bases were loaded and the winning run came in to score in the 12th inning.

The Mustangs grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning as Joe Koerper hit a two-run home run, but that was all the offense St. Joe would have the entire night.

St. Joseph had just three hits on the night and none after Koerper’s home run.

The Mustangs could only muster four base runners after the fourth inning and only one got into scoring position.

Sedalia scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game.  They had just five hits and only had three infield hits until a leadoff double in the 12th.

Redmond Floyd started for St. Joe and went 6.1 innings.  He allowed just one hit, two runs, struck out nine and walked five.

Moyers suffered the loss as he went four innnings of relief.  He gave up three hits and one, while striking out six batters.

Koeper had two hits for the Mustangs, while Griff Gordon had the only other hit in the game.

Mustangs score six in the ninth to tie Clarinda, then fall to A’s

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs rallied from a six-run ninth inning deficit Monday night at Clarinda, but St. Joe’s summer league baseball team still fell to the A’s 8-7.

With the loss, St. Joe drops to 24-16 and 20-16 in the MINK League.  Clarinda increases its lead in the North Division to three games as the Mustangs have just six league games left.

St. Joseph scored in the first inning on an RBI double by Griff Gordon, but that was all they’d score until the ninth.

Clarinda took control of the game with seven two-out runs and they led 7-1 heading to the ninth inning.

That’s when the Mustangs rallied to tie the game.

Carlos Rodriguez led the inning off with a single, Griff Gordon double home a run and Zac Johnson had a two-RBI single in the ninth.

St. Joseph also got help from Clarinda as they committed two errors and a wild pitch by Jeff Harvill allowed two runs to score and tie the game.

Clarinda’s Bud Britt led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a double off Jarrod Miller and scored on a sacrafice fly by Tommy Hager with one out to win the game.

Dixon Marble started for St. Joe and allowed five runs on 11 hits.  He struck out and didn’t walk a batter.

Gordon was the only Mustangs with multiple hits as he finished 2-for-3.  St. Joseph only had seven hits in the game.

St. Joseph extends win streak with 14-inning thriller over Nevada

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs won their fourth consecutive game Saturday night as they defeated Nevada, 2-1, in a 14-inning thriller.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 24-15 and 20-15 in the MINK League.

Nevada scored in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead and the game stayed that way until the eighth, when Mustangs’ shortstop Brandon Huske hit a two-out single to drive in Kyle Richards and tie the game.

Both bullpens kept the game 1-1 until the 14th inning when Lucas Powers and Zac Johnson each walked to start the inning.  Connor Foreman poped out to the third baseman and then Eric Swain drove in Powers with a single and give St. Joe a walk-off win.

Jarrod Miller earned the win in relief as he went five innings and allowed only four hits.  He struck out two and didn’t walk a batter.

Staten Jones started for St. Joseph and lasted 6.1 innings, giving up just one run on seven hits.

In all, the the Mustangs relievers of Miller, Jace Anderson, Blake Kolons and Aaron Baker held the Griffons scorless for the final 7.2 innings.  They combined to strick out 10 and didn’t walk a batter.

Swain and Huske each had three hits to lead St. Joseph, while Foreman and Joe Koerper added two each.

The Mustangs have Sunday off and will play at Clarinda Monday.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and will broadcast live on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.

Mustangs win big at Sedalia Friday to avenge earlier loss

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs got some revenge at Sedalia Friday night.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team lost Tuesday against the Bombers, 13-1, but they turned the tables Friday with a 12-4 victory over Sedalia.

The Mustangs scored unearned runs in the first and fifth innings to take a 2-0 lead before the Bombers got one run back in the bottom of the fifth.

After that it was all St. Joseph.

Joe Koerper hit a three-run home run to cap off a six-run sixth inning and Brandon Huske hit another three-run homer to finish off a four-run seventh inning.

The Mustangs led 12-1 before Sedalia scored three runs in the eighth inning off St. Joe reliever Steve Moyers.

Brandon Simmons earned his first win of the season as he went seven innings and allowed just one run on five hits.  He struck out two and didn’t walk a batter.

Koerper finished the night 3-for-5 with four RBI, while Connor Foreman added three hits and Zac Johnson went 2-for-5.  Huske also had four runs batted in.

St. Joseph pulled within two games of Clarinda in the MINK League North standings after the A’s lost Friday to Joplin, 3-0.

The Mustangs are back at home Saturday as they host Nevada at 7:00 p.m.

St. Joseph jumps on Chillicothe early and coasts to 14-0 win

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs won their second consecutive game against Chillicothe Thursday night with a 14-0 victory against the Mudcats inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 22-15 and 18-15 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs put the game away early as they scored seven runs in the first inning.  All the runs were unearned because of two Mudcat errors, but St. Joe sent 11 men to the plate and had seven hits in the opening frame.

That was more than enough for Mustangs’ starter Aaron Baker.  He threw six scoreless innings and allowed only three hits.  Baker threw only 56 pitches in six innings and imporves to 6-1 with a 1.02 ERA this season.

Shane O’Connell led St. Joseph’s 15-hit attack as he finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Brandon Huske, Griff Gordon, Joe Koeper and Jeremy Monty added two hits each, while Zac Johnson hit a two-run home run and finished with three RBI.

The Mustangs are back on the road Friday night as they play at Sedalia.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN 1550 AM and here on StJosephPost.com.

Mustangs snap two-game skid with win at Chillicothe

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs snapped their two-game losing streak Wednesday night with a 7-6 victory at Chillicothe.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team got out to a quick start as they scored two runs in the first inning on RBI singles by Griff Gordon and Zac Johnson.

The Mustangs added three more runs in the second inning as Brandon Huske hit a two-run triple and scored on a balk.

Chillicothe scored one run in the third inning and three in the fourth to pull within one, but St. Joe answered with two in the sixth inning to extend their lead as Gordon and Joe Koeper had one RBI each.

The Mudcats made things interesting against Jarrod Miller in the ninth inning as they scored two runs to make it 7-6 and they had the bases loaded with no outs.  Miller then struck out the next two batters and got a ground out to end the game for his first save of the season.

Jerad Hawkins earned the win as he went seven innings and allowed four runs on 10 hits.  He struck out two and walked one.

Gordon led the Mustangs’ nine-hit attack as he went 3-for-5 with two RBI and Johnson finished 2-for-4.

St. Joseph gets blown out at Sedalia Tuesday, 13-1

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs suffered their second consecutive lopsided loss Tuesday as they fell at Sedalia, 13-1.

The Bombers broke open a scoreless game with 11 runs in a three innings stretch.  Sedalia scored four runs in the third inning, three in the fourth and fourth more runs in the fifth inning.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team scored their only run in the fourth and they had just three hits on the night.

The Mustangs also committed four errors for the second straight game as well.

Colton Howell started for St. Joseph and lasted just 3.1 innings.  He gave up seven runs on seven hits, while striking out three and walking two.

The Mustangs fall to 20-15 this season and 16-15 in the MINK League.

Mistakes cost Mustangs in 11-2 loss at Clarinda

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had their two-game win streak snapped Monday night in Clarinda as they fell the A’s, 11-2.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team drops to 20-14 this season and 16-14 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs got off to a slow start Monday as Clarinda starter Jake Meloche retired the first 14 St. Joseph batters in the game until Shane O’Connell got a base hit with two outs in the fifth.

The A’s scored their first two runs on two passed balls by O’Connell behind the plate and scored two more runs because of an error at third by Connor Foreman.

In all, St. Joe committed four errors in the game, had two passed ball and gave up five unearned runs.

Clarinda led 6-0 after six innings before the Mustangs finally got on the scoreboard as O’Connell and Kyle Richards each had RBI singles in the seventh.

The A’s answered right back and put the game out of reach with one run in the bottom of the seventh and four more in the eighth inning.

Redmond Floyd suffered the loss as he went five innings and allowed five hits and two earned runs.  He struck out eight and walked three.

Richards had the only mulit-hit game for St. Joseph as he finished 2-for-3.  Payton Scarbrough and Zac Johnson scored the two runs for the Mustangs.

St. Joe is back on the road Tuesday as they play a 7:00 p.m. game at Sedalia.
