Scarbrough, Jones lead St. Joseph to road win at Omaha

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs picked up their second straight victory over Omaha Sunday as St. Joe’s summer college baseball team defeated the Diamond Spirit on the road, 6-3.

The Mustangs improve to 20-13 this season and 16-13 in the MINK League.

Omaha led 1-0 until the fifth inning when Eric Swain had an RBI single to tie the game.  Swain finished 2-for-5 for his fourth consecutive multi-hit game.

Payton Scarbrough then gave St. Joseph the lead for in the sixth inning.

The Mustangs’ catcher drove in two runs with a double off the left field wall to break the 1-1 tie, and he scored on an Omaha error as St. Joe led 4-1 in the sixth.

The Diamond Spirit got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, but Scarbrough came through again as he had a two-out, two-RBI single to cap off a 3-for-4 night and a career-high four RBI.

That was more than enough for St. Joseph starter Stanten Jones.  He lasted 6.1 innings and allowed just two runs on five hits.  Jones struck out seven and didn’t register a walk.

Joe Koerper and Connor Foreman added two hits each for the Mustangs.

St. Joe is back on the road Monday as they play at Clarinda for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch.  The game will be broadcast on ESPN 1550 and here on StJosephPost.com.

Mustangs use two five-run innings to roll past Omaha, 11-1

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs got back in the win column Saturday night as they hammered Omaha, 11-1, to improve to 19-13 this season and 15-13 in the MINK League.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team broke open a 1-1 game with five runs in the fifth inning and five more in the sixth.

The Mustangs scored four two-out runs in the fifth innning, highlighted by Zac Johnson two-run double.  Johnson drove in two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Eric Swain led the way with three hits, while Johnson, Connor Foreman and Shane O’Connell had two hits each.

Kyle Richards added three RBI, while Foreman had two runs batter in and three runs scored.

Dixon Marble threw a complete-game three hitter for St. Joseph.  He allowed one unearned run, while striking out five and not walking a batter.

After the first two Omaha batters reached base in the game, Marble retired 27 of the last 29 batters he faced.

The Mustangs and the Diamond Spirit play against Sunday night in Omaha.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and can be heard on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.

Mustangs come up short against Clarinda, 3-2

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs suffered their third loss in five games Friday night as they fell at home to the Clarinda A’s, 3-2.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team drops to 18-13 and 14-13 in the MINK League.

Clarinda struck first Friday night with one run in the first inning, but St. Joe took the lead in the third inning when Joe Koerper and Connor Foreman each had RBI singles.

The A’s rallied to tie the game in the seventh inning off Mustangs’ starter Brandon Simmons and they took the lead in the eighth off releiver Ethan Appleby.

Simmons threw well for St. Joseph as he allowed six hits and two runs in seven innings of work. Simmons struck out five and didn’t walk a batter.

Griff Gordon and Eric Swain had two hits each for the Mustangs, Gordon and Brandon Huske scored the two St. Joe runs.

The Mustangs are back in action Saturday night at Phil Welch Stadium when they host Omaha at 7:00 p.m.  The game will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.

Baker, Scarbrough lead the Mustangs past Sedalia, 2-1

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs defeated Sedalia Thursday night at Phil Welch Stadium as St. Joe’s summer college baseball team won a pitchers dual, 2-1.

Aaron Baker threw a complete-game as he allowed just one run on seven hits.  Baker struck out five and walked two as he improves to 5-1 this season.

Payton Scarbrough was the offensive hero as he gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead in the third inning with an RBI double that scored Eric Swain.

Then in the eighth inning with the score tied 1-1, Scarbrough lined a two-out double down the right field line to score Swain again and give St. Joseph the lead.

Scarbrough finished 3-for-3, while Swain finished with two hits.

Brandon Huske, Griff Gordon and Zac Johnson added one hit each for the Mustangs.

St. Joseph improves to 18-12 and 14-12 in the MINK League as they return to Phil Welch Friday night for a 7:00 p.m. game with Clarinda.

St. Joseph gets exhibition win over U.S. Military All-Stars, 6-3

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs won an exhibition game Wednesday night at Phil Welch Stadium as they defeated the U.S. Military All-Stars, 6-3.

Griff Gordon led St. Joe’s eight-hit attack as he finished 3-for-4 with a double and one run scored.

Connor Foreman added two hits and two RBI for St. Joseph’s summer college baseball team, whiel Carlos Rodriguez scored two runs.

Jared Hawkins earned the win as he went 7.0 innings and allowed six hits, three runs and he struck out three batters.

The Mustangs broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning with four runs and they added one more in the fifth.

St. Joseph is back at home on the 4th of July as they host Sedalia at 7:00 p.m.  The game will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.

Mustangs lose at Omaha on ninth inning error

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs lost a heart breaker Tuesday night at Omaha, as St. Joe’s summer college baseball team lost to the Diamond Spirit, 7-6.

The Mustangs rallied from a 6-1 deficit after six innings as they scored two runs in the seventh inning and three in the eighth to tie the game.

In the ninth, Omaha’s Cole Wilson was hit by a pitch with one out by Jarrod Miller.  Wilson stole second and then with two outs he tried to steal third base when St. Joe catcher Payton Scarbrough made a throwing error on the attempt and Wilson came in to score the winning run.

The Mustangs committed four errors in the game as they drop to 17-12 and 13-12 in the MINK League.

Zac Johnson led St. Joseph’s six-hit attack as he went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.  Scarbrough and Eric Swain each had one hit and drove in one run for the Mustangs.

St. Joe starter Colton Howell went just 4.1 innings as he allowed five runs and eight hits.  Trey Gonsalez went 2.2 innings and gave up one run on two hits, while Miller took the loss as he lasted 1.2 innings.  Miller gave up just one hit and the unearned run in the ninth inning.

The Mustangs are back at home Wednesday for an exhibition game against the USA Military All-Stars.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN 1550 AM and here on StJosephPost.com.

Floyd, Swain lead St. Joseph to 4-2 win at Clarinda

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs got back in the win column Monday night as they built a early lead and hung on for a 4-2 victory at Clarinda.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 17-11 this season and 13-11 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs scored all four of their runs in the top of the first inning.  Zac Johnson drove in a run with a groundout and then Eric Swain hit a three-run triple with two outs.

That’s all St. Joseph starter Redmond Floyd would need as he improved to 2-1 this summer.  Floyd went eight innings and allowed just two runs on six hits.

Ethan Appleby earned his fourth save of the season as he worked a perfect ninth inning, striking out two.

Griff Gordon led the Mustangs’ offense as he went 3-for-4 and Shane O’Connell finished with two hits.

St. Joe wraps up its three-game road trip Tuesday night as they play a 7:00 p.m. game at Omaha.

Mustangs falter late and lose at Nevada, 12-5

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had their three-game win streak snapped Sunday at Nevada as St. Joe’s summer college baseball team lost to the Griffons, 12-5.

The Mustangs led 2-0 in the third inning and eventually led 5-3 in the sixth inning, but they faltered late and gave up nine unanswered runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to lose to Nevada.

Kris Koerper drove in Griff Gordon in the first inning and Gordon had an RBI ground out in the third, before the Griffons scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead.

Koerper then hit a two-out, two-RBI double in the fith inning to give St. Joe the lead back before the Griffons took control.

Nevada tied the game in the sixth with a two-out, two-RBI single by Cal Hogan and they broke the tie in the seventh with another two-out, two-RBI single by Fico Kondla.

The Griffons added insurance in the eighth with five runs off Mustangs’ reliever Jace Anderson.

Blake Kolons suffered the loss in relief as he allowed two runs on two hits in 1.1 innings.

Dixon Marble started the game for St. Joseph and he lasted 5.2 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits.

Koerper led the Mustangs 12-hit attack as he finished 4-for-5 with one double, one run and three RBI.  Brandon Huske and Griff Gordon added two hits and two runs each.

St. Joe falls to 16-11 this season and 12-11 in the MINK League.  They’re back on the road Monday for a 7:00 p.m. game at Clarinda.  It’ll be broadcast on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.

Koerper brothers lead St. Joseph to doubleheader sweep over Ozark

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs snapped a two-game losing streak Friday night against Ozark as St. Joe’s summer college baseball swept a doubleheader against the Generals, 10-3 and 8-7.

In game one, St. Joseph jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning, but they opened things up in the third with four more runs.

The Mustangs added three in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth.

Joe and Kris Koerper each homered and drove in three runs in the game.  The first time the two brothers homered in the same game this season.

Eric Swain, Connor Foreman and Payton Scarbrough each had one RBI each, while Brandon Huske scored three runs.

St. Joe starter Aaron Baker threw a complete game to earn the win as he improves to 4-1.  Baker allowed three runs on just four hits.  He struck out three and didn’t walk a batter.

In game two, the Mustangs raced out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, but Ozark scored seven unearned runs with four in the third inning adn three more in the fourth.

St. Joseph did battle back though and eventually won the game in dramatic fashion.

The Mustangs pulled within one run in the seventh and final inning, and Kris Koerper came through with a two-out RBI double to score Emilio Villanueva and tie the game.

Then Joe Koerper hit a sharp ground ball to second that Justin Lois couldn’t handle and Brandon Huske scored the winning run.

Kris Koerper hit another home run in the nightcap and had three RBI, while Swain had two hits and Kyle Richards hit a home run and drove in two runs.

Staten Jones struggled on the mound as he went just 3.1 innings and he allowed six runs on six hits.  Trey Gonsalez earned the win in relief as he went 1.1 innings and didn’t allowed a run.

The Mustangs are now 15-10 this season and 11-10 in the MINK League.  They’re at home again Saturday as they host the Sedalia Bombers at 7:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.

Mustangs lose big to Ozark Thursday, 15-2

riggertMustangsAfter a three-day layoff the St. Joseph Mustangs returned home to Phil Welch Stadium and suffered their worst loss of the season as they lost to Ozark, 15-2.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team falls to 13-10 this season and 9-10 in the MINK League.

The Generals scored a run in the first inning and broke the game open with four runs in each of the third and fifth innings.

Ozark pounded out 19 hits as Mustangs’ starter Jonathan McCann was knocked out of the game in the third inning.  He gave up five runs and six hits, while striking out two and walking two others.

Jared Hawkins and Patrick Brady didn’t fair much better on the mound.  Hawkins allowed six runs on five hits in 2.1 innings, while Brady went 4.0 innings and gave up four runs and eight hits.

St. Joseph scored in the fourth inning on an error by Ozark shortstop Jacob Garrison and the Mustangs added one run in the ninth inning on a solo home run by Brandon Huske.

St. Joe is back at home against Ozark Friday for a doubleheader that begins at 6:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.  Game one will be broadcast live on ESPN 1550 AM and here on StJosephPost.com.
