Mustangs’ rally falls short as they lose to Sedalia

The St. Joseph Mustangs saw their six-game winning streak snapped Saturday night as they lost at home to Sedalia, 5-4.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team fell behind 5-3 in the ninth inning, but Jordan Guida hit a two-out RBI double to pull the Mustangs within one run.

Shane Segovia then grounded out to end the rally as St. Joseph falls to 14-7 and 10-7 in the MINK League.

Sedalia never trailed in the game as they scored two runs in the second inning off St. Joe starter Kyle Jackson.

The Mustangs were able to tie the game in the sixth inning with a two-out two RBI single from Maxime LeFevre, but Sedalia answered right back with a run in the top of the seventh.

Guida led St. Joseph as he went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, while Segovia added two hits and scored twice.  Tanner Lubach also had two hits and scored one run.

Jackson received a no-decision as he went 5.1 innings and allowed three runs on three hits.  Carson Smith (2-4) took the loss as lasted 2.2 innings and gave up two earned runs.

The Mustangs are back on the road Sunday night as they travel to Nevada for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch.  The game will be broadcast on ESPN 1550 AM.

Mustangs sweep Ozark to extend winning streak to six

The St. Joseph Mustangs extended their winning streak to six games Friday night with a doubleheader sweep of Ozark at Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team shut out the Generals in game one, 10-0, and won game two, 3-2, in 11 innings.

In game one, Central high school graduate Jonathan McCann made his first start of the season and he went six inning, allowing just six hits and stricking out six.

The Mustangs scored quickly against the Generals as they put up two runs in the first inning and one more in the second.  It was 5-0 in the fourth before St. Joseph put the game out of reach with a five-run fifth inning.

Kris Koerper and Jordan Guida led the way as they each went 2-for-3 with a home run and a double.  Koerper drove in three runs and Guida had two RBI.

Maxime LeFevre and Kyle Simpson scored two runs each for St. Joe in game one.

In game two, St. Joseph got a walk-off home run in the 11th inning from Kyle Richards to win 3-2.

Richards also hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth, while Patrick Burkhart doubled home a run in the third inning.

The Mustang pitching staff combined in three-hit Ozark in the 11 innings.

Starter Nik Jurado made his first start and the former Missouri Western Griffon went six innings and allowed just one hit.  He didn’t allow a run and he struck out five.

Phillip Wilson came on in the seventh inning for his fifth save of the season, but Ozark plated two runs to tie the game and send it to extra innings.

After the seventh, Wilson, Ryan Price and new acquired Tyler Durham combined to allowed just one hit the rest of the way.

That allowed Richards to win it with his first home run of the season.

The Mustangs improve to 14-6 and 10-6 in the MINK League.  They’ve won 12 of their last 14 games and are back in action Saturday as they entertain Sedalia.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and you can hear it on ESPN 1550 AM.

Mustangs down Ozark Thursday for fourth straight win

The St. Joseph Mustangs equaled their longest winning streak of the season Thursday night as they won their fourth straight game by defeating Ozark, 5-3, at Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 12-6 this season and 8-6 in the MINK League.

St. Joseph fell behind 2-0 after the top of the first inning, but answered right back as they scored one run in the first, two in the second inning and one run in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.

The Mustangs led 5-3 in the eighth inning when Ozark loaded the bases with two outs, but Carson Smith came out of the bullpen and got the final out.  Phillip Wilson earned his fourth save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.

St. Joseph starter Cody Cunningham improves to 4-0 as he went 7.2 innings and allowed 10 hits and three runs.  He struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter.

Maxime LeFevre had two hits, scored two runs and had one RBI, while Mark Robinette added two hits and drove in one run.

Kyle Simpson and Kyle Richards also had one RBI for the Mustangs.

St. Joe is back at home against Ozark Friday night as they play at doubleheader beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Mustangs destroy Kansas City Monarchs Wednesday, 21-0

The St. Joseph Mustangs tied a franchise record with 21 runs on Wednesday night as St. Joe’s summer college baseball team shut out the Kansas City Monarchs, 21-0, at Phil Welch Stadium.

The Mustangs jumped on Kansas City early with 10 runs in the first innings as the first 10 batters for St. Joseph reached base and they all scored.

Jordan Guida hit a two-run home run and a drove in a run with a double in the first innings, while Kyle Simpson had three RBI in the opening frame.

St. Joe added one run in the second and scored seven runs in the third to make it 18-0 after three innings.

Simpson and Will Mulligan had three hits and five RBI each, while Tim Caputo went 4-for-6 with three runs and three RBI.  Shane Segovia added four hits and four runs scored.

Staten Jones (2-0) earned the win as he went five innings and allowed just three hits while striking out seven.

The Mustangs improve to 11-6 this season and they get back into MINK League play Thursday.  St. Joseph entertains Ozark at 7:00 p.m. Thursday and you can listen to the game on ESPN 1550 AM.

Mustangs get non-league win against North Kansas City Tuesday

The St. Joseph Mustangs picked up their second consecutive win Tuesday as St. Joe’s summer college baseball team defeated the Kansas city Monarchs, 5-2, in a non-league game at Phil Welch Stadium.

The Mustangs improve to 10-6 this season.

St. Joseph fell behind right away as Bubba Blau allowed two runs in the top of the first inning, but that was all Blau and the Mustangs pitching staff would allow.

Blau is now 1-0 as he gave up just two runs in six innings and he struck out five.  Nik Jurado and Phillip Wilson combined for three scoreless innings of relief.

The Mustangs offense bounced back after the two runs as they answered with four of their own in the bottom half of the first.

Mark Robinette and Patrick Burkhart drove in one run each in the first, and Tanner Lubach singled home two runs.

Burkhart added an RBI single in the sixth inning to cap off the scoring.

St. Joe returns to Phil Welch Stadium Wednesday night as they entertain the Kansas City Monarchs at 7:00 p.m.  You can listen to the game live on 680 KFEQ.

Baker, Mustangs blank Clarinda to snap road losing streak

The St. Joseph Mustangs broke a five-game road losing streak Monday night as St. Joe’s summer college baseball team won at Clarinda, 2-0.

Aaron Baker (2-1) threw a complete-game shutout as he allowed just five hits and struck out six.

Mark Robinette single home Maxime LeFevre in the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie and then Jake Kretzer hit a solo home run to lead off the sixth.

That was all Baker would need as he got out of a bases loaded, two-out jam in the six inning.  And Clarinda put two base runners on in the ninth before Baker struck out Brandon Thomasson to end the game.

Robinette, Kretzer, Kris Koerper, Tanner Lubach and Kyle Simpson had one hit each as the Mustangs had just five hits in the game.

St. Joe improves to 9-6 this summer and 7-6 in the MINK League.  They return to Phil Welch Stadium Tuesday night for a non-league game with North Kansas City at 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs win exhibition game against Missouri Western alumni

The St. Joseph Mustangs defeated the Missouri Western alumni Saturday night, 5-2, in an exhibition game at Phil Welch Stadium.

The Griffon alumni took a 2-1 lead on St. Joe’s summer college baseball team in the fourth inning as Joe Fehlker and Jon Cochran each drove in a run against Mustangs’ starter Kyle Jackson.

St. Joseph answered in the bottom half of the fourth to tie the game as Kris Koerper hit an RBI double that scored Kyle Simpson.

The Mustangs took the lead for good in the fifth inning as Tim Caputo had an RBI groudout and Simpson had an RBI single.

Simpson finished 3-for-4 and he scored two runs.

Jackson earned the win as he lasted six innings and allowed four hits and two runs.

St. Joe is back in action Monday for a MINK League game at Clarinda.  The first pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. and you can listen to the game on ESPN 1550 AM.

Mustangs fall in 10 innings at Sedalia

The St. Joseph Mustangs continued their road woes on Friday night at Sedalia as St. Joe’s summer college baseball team lost to the Bombers, 4-3, in 10 innings.

St. Joseph drops to 8-6 this season and 6-6 in the MINK League, but they are now just 1-5 away from Phil Welch Stadium.

Sedalia broke through against Mustangs’ starter Adam Maddox as they took a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning, but St. Joe rallied to force extra innings.

In the eighth, the Mustangs pulled to within one run as Emilio Villanueva doubled home Maxime LeFevre and Kris Koerper hit a sacrifice fly that scored Villanueva.

St. Joseph tied the game in the ninth inning as Kyle Richards came through with a two-out single that scored Jordan Guida to make it 3-3.

Carson Smith allowed the first three batter to reach in the tenth inning to load the bases, and then Sedalia’s Matt Skipper won the game with a single off Chris Green.

Maddox went eight innings and allowed three runs and five hits.  Smith is now 2-3 in relief this year.

St. Joseph is back at home Saturday for an exhibition game against a Missouri Western alumni team at 7:00 p.m.  You can listen to the game on ESPN 1550 AM.

Cunningham, LeFevre lead Mustangs past Omaha

The St. Joseph Mustangs won their second consecutive game Thursday night at Phil Welch Stadium as St. Joe’s summer college baseball team shut out Omaha, 6-0.

Cody Cunningham moved to 3-0 this season as he threw a complete-game shutout and allowed just two hits.  Cunningham struck out eight and walked just one batter.

The game was scoreless until the third inning when St. Joe shortstop Maxime LeFevre hit a grand slam to put the Mustangs ahead 4-0.

Shane Segovia drove in the other two runs with a single in the sixth inning as St. Joseph improves to 8-5 and 6-5 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs are on the road Friday night as they travel to Sedalia for 7:00 p.m. first pitch.

Mustangs cruise to 16-4 win over Kansas City Monarchs

After two days off, the St. Joseph Mustangs had no trouble in a non-league game Wednesday night at Phil Welch Stadium.  St. Joe’s summer college baseball team rolled past the Kansas City Monarchs, 16-4.

The Mustangs improve to 7-5 this season.

St. Joseph scored in the first inning on an RBI ground out by Spiker Helms and then made it a blowout as they scored five runs in the each of the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

Kris Koerper led the Mustangs as he went 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI.  Shane Segovia also drove in three runs as he was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple.

Tim Caputo and Jordan Hurtt also had two hits each in the victory.

Stanten Jones picked up the win for St. Joe as he went five innings and allowed five hits and one run.

The Mustangs are back in action Thursday as they host Omaha at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.
