Mustangs’ win streak snapped by Omaha Wednesday

The St. Joseph Mustangs had their seven-game win streak snapped Wednesday night as they fell at home to Omaha, 5-2.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team jumped out to a 2-0 lead after Jon Wegener and Spiker Helms led the game off with singles and came in to score.  Wegener scored on a double steal and Helms crossed the plate on a ground out by Brock Chaffin.

That was all the offense the Mustangs would get.  Omaha starter Ben Heairet scattered six hits the rest of the way and threw a complete game to get the win.

The Diamond Spirit answered St. Joe’s two-run first inning with two in the second to tie the game and two more in the third inning.  Errors by pitcher Cody Cunningham and second baseman Ryan Richardson led to two unearned runs.

Cunningham (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season as he allowed four runs on six hits in five innings of work.  He struck out five and walked two.

Helms was the only Mustangs with more than one hit as he finished 2-for-4.  St. Joseph only had one extra base hit as Richardson had a double in the second inning.

The Mustangs fall to 28-8 this season and 22-8 in the MINK League.  They’re back inside Phil Welch Stadium Thursday as they host Chillicothe at 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs rolls past Sedalia for seventh straight win

The St. Joseph Mustangs won their seventh consecutive game Monday night as they rolled to a 7-1 win over Sedalia inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 28-7 and 22-7 in the MINK League.

Sedalia jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Brett Schwartz tripled to start the game and Mark Pritchard drove him in with a ground out.

The Mustangs answered right back in the bottom half of the first and never trailed again.

Ryan Richardson and Spiker Helms singled to start the inning and Brent Seifert and a two-RBI double to right field.

St. Joseph didn’t score again until the fifth inning when Sedalia catcher Troy Stein committed a throwing error and then Seifert drove in another run with a single.

Kris Koerper gave the Mustangs insurance with a two-run home run to left field and Jake Kretzer had an RBI ground out.

Seifert and Richardson had two hits each to lead St. Joe.

Jayson Huett improved to 3-0 as he went seven innings and allowed just one run on four hits.  He struck out one and walked one.

The Mustangs are off Tuesday and then return to Phil Welch Stadium Wednesday against the Omaha Diamond Spirit.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and you can hear the game on 680 KFEQ.

Mustangs cruise past U.S.A. Military All-Stars

The St. Joseph Mustangs won their sixth consecutive game Sunday night as they cruised to an easy non-league win against the U.S.A. Military All-Stars, 7-2, inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team scored four two-outs runs in the third inning to break  a scoreless tie and the Mustangs never looked back.

St. Joseph added one run in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh.

Brent Seifert hit a two-run home run in the third, while Spiker Helms also drove in two runs.  Ryan Richardson finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Mustangs’ starter Adam Maddox was nearly perfect in seven innings Sunday night.  Maddox allowed just two hits, while striking out six and walking one in seven innings of work.  He’s now 3-1 this summer.

St. Joe improves to 27-7 overall as they get back into MINK League play Monday night at Phil Welch Stadium.  The Mustangs host Sedalia at 7:00 p.m. and you can hear the game on ESPN 1550.

Mustangs stay hot with 9-3 win over Joplin

The St. Joseph Mustangs won their fifth consecutive game Saturday night with a 9-3 win over Joplin inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 26-7 and 21-7 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs had to rally from a 3-0 deficit as Joplin scored three runs in the third inning off St. Joseph starter Kyle Jackson.

St. Joe didn’t get on the scoreboard until the fifth inning when they tied the game at three and then took the lead for good with two runs in the sixth, three more in the seventh inning and one run in the eighth.

Jackson did not pick up the win as he lasted only 4.1 innings.  He gave up three runs on four hits and walked five.

Three Mustang reliever came in and allowed only one hit in 4.2 combined innings.  Royce Duncan earned the win with 2.1 innings of relief, while Ryan Price and Mark Robinette also shut down the Outlaws.

Brent Seifert led the way offensively with two hits and three RBI.  Jeff Roy drove in two with a home run, while Brock Chaffin and Kris Koerper added two hits and one RBI each.

St. Joseph is back at home Sunday for Military Appreciation Night at Phil Welch Stadium.  The Mustangs play the U.S.A. Military All-Stars at 6:00 p.m.   You can hear the game live on ESPN 1550.

Mustangs win fourth in-a-row as they rally past Clarinda

The St. Joseph Mustangs scored two runs in the eighth inning Friday night at Phil Welch Stadium as they rallied for a 5-4 victory over Clarinda.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team led 3-0 after three innings, but the A’s tied the game with three runs in the fourth inning and took the lead with one in the sixth.

The Mustangs’ comeback began with a Kris Koerper walk to lead off the eighth inning and then Jon Wegener single to put two on with no one out.  Jeff Roy pinch ran for Koerper and T.J. Dailey sacrificed both runners into scoring position with one out.

St. Joseph manager Matt Johnson then subbed in Mark Robinette to pinch hit for Ryan Richardson and the move paid off.  Robinette singled with one out and drove in both runs to give the Mustangs the lead for good.

Wegener led the St. Joseph offense with two hits and two RBI, while Cameron Bentley also had two hits.  Jordan Guida had the other RBI for the Mustangs.

Ben Baker earned his second win of the week in relief.  He went 2.1 innings and allowed just one hit and no runs.

Kyle Hassna started the game and lasted five innings.  He gave up four runs on eight hits, while striking out four and walking one.  Doug Shields worked a perfect ninth for his fourth save of the season.

The Mustangs improve to 25-7 and 20-7 in the MINK League.  They’re back at home Saturday night as they host Joplin at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Mustangs win third straight with 11-3 win over Diamond Spirit

The St. Joseph Mustangs took advantage of eight walks and two hit batters Thursday night and cruised to an 11-3 MINK League win at home against the Omaha Diamond Spirit.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team jumped out to another early lead as they scored four runs on just one hit in the first inning, and then they broke open a 4-2 game by scoring six runs on two hits in the fifth.

Four Omaha pitchers combined to give up the ten free passes and the Diamond Spirit also committed two errors.

Cameron Bentley was the only Mustang with mulitple hits as he finished 2-for-5 with two RBI.  Mark Robinette went 1-for-3 with four RBI, while Kris Koerper and Landinn Eckhardt also drove in one run.

Andrew Polly (2-2) went six innings to earn the win on the mound.  He allowed two runs on six hits, while striking out two and walking only one.

St. Joseph improves to 24-7 and 19-7 in the MINK League.  They’re won three in-a-row and four of their last five games.  The Mustangs are back at home Saturday as they entertain Clarinda at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Mustangs roll to easy win over Omaha

The St. Joseph Mustangs scored eight runs in the first inning Wednesday night and cruised to an easy non-league win over the Omaha Strike Zone, 13-7, inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Brent Seifert hit a three-run home run in the first inning to get St. Joe’s summer college baseball team on the board and then Ryan Richardson, playing in his first game as a Mustang, hit a two-run double.

Bishop LeBlond graduate Andrew Nellestein continued the inning as he drove in a run with a single, Jon Wegener had an RBI double and Seifert capped the inning off with an RBI single.

St. Joseph added two more runs in the second inning to take a 10-0 lead before Omaha scored four two-out runs in the third inning.  That was as close as the Strike Zone would get.

The Mustangs pounded out 17 hits as Wegener led the way.  The Central Missouri graduate played in his first game with St. Joe and went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.  Nellestein added three hits and two RBI, while Seifert, Richardson,  Spiker Helms, Jeff Roy, and Jake Kretzer had two hits each.

Cody Cunningham went six innings on the mound to improve to 4-0 this summer.  He allowed four runs on eight hits, but struck out eight and walked none.

The Mustangs improve to 23-7 and return to MINK League play Thursday as they entertain the Omaha Diamond Spirit inside Phil Welch Stadium.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs rally from 4-0 deficit to defeat Clarinda

After a day off Monday, the St. Joseph Mustangs rallied from a 4-0 deficit Tuesday to beat Clarinda, 6-4, inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team had lost four of their last six games before the win Tuesday.  They improve to 22-7 and 18-7 in the MINK League.

Cody Lane started the game for the Mustangs but didn’t make it out of the third inning as he allowed four runs on three hits.  He walked two and struck out three.

That was all Clarinda would get though as Ben Baker came on in relief and went 5.1 innings and he gave up just one hit and no runs, while striking out seven and walking one.  Baker earned the win and Mark Robinette picked up the save with a scoreless ninth inning.

The pitching of Baker allowed the Mustangs to hang around until their bats got hot.  St. Joseph was able to get one run back in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly from Cameron Bentley that scored T.J. Dailey.

Then the Mustangs took the lead for good with a five-run seventh inning.

Dailey drove in Robinette with a single and then Spike Helms singled with the bases loaded.  All three runs scored after a throwing error and then Brent Seifert drove in Helms with a double.

Seifert and Dailey had two hits each to lead St. Joe.

The Mustangs are back in action Wednesday as they host the Omaha Strike Zone at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.  The game can be heard on 680 KFEQ.

Mustangs game at Clarinda suspended after seven innings

The St. Joseph Mustangs will have towait at least two more days to try and get back in the win column as St. Joe’s summer college baseball teams’ game at Clarinda Sunday was suspended due to severe weather.

The game was called after seven innings with the scored tied 1-1 as heavy rain, 60 MPH wind, hail and lightning swept through the area.

They’ll finish the game on July 13 when St. Joseph travels to Clarinda for their scheduled game.  The suspended game will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the second game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Northwest Missouri State graduate Jayson Huett threw all seven innings for the Mustangs as he allowed just four hits and one run.  He struck out five and walked only one batter.

The only run Huett gave up was with two outs in the fifth inning.  He retired the first two Clarinda batters, but Jarvis Smith singled and Seth Spivey had a two-out RBI double to tie the game.

St. Joe scored its lone run in the third inning.  Spiker Helms opened with a single, advanced to second on an error by pitcher Gabe Wellmeyer and then scored when catcher Austin Acherl also committed a throwing error to first base on a dribbler in front of the plate off the bat of Brent Seifert.

Seifert and Brock Chaffin each had two hits for the Mustangs.

St. Joseph remains 21-7 and 17-7 in the MINK League.  They’ve drop four of their last six games after falling to Sedalia Saturday.

The Mustangs have their first day off in two weeks Monday and return to Phil Welch Stadium Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. matchup with Clarinda.

Mustangs lose at home Saturday to Sedalia

The St. Joseph Mustangs lost for the third time in four games as they lost Saturday inside Phil Welch Stadium to Sedalia, 7-1.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team gave up single runs in the first and fourth innings and fell behind 2-0.  Benton graduate Jake Kretzer drove in Jordan Guida in the fifth inning with a single, but that’s as close as they’d get.

Sedalia broke the game open with three runs in the seventh against Mustangs’ starter Adam Maddox.  Maddox (2-1) allowed five runs and seven hits in 6.2 innings of work.

St. Joseph’s offense was limited by Bombers’ starter Aaron Baker as he threw a complete game five-hitter.

Kretzer, Guida, Spiker Helms, Mark Robinette and T.J. Dailey each had a single in the game.

The Mustangs fall to 21-7 this season and 17-7 in the MINK League.  St. Joe is back on the road Sunday as they play at Clarinda.  The first pitch is at 7:30 p.m. and you can hear the game on ESPN 1550.
