Mustangs snap 2-game skid with win over Ozark

The St. Joseph Mustangs broke their two-game losing streak as they defeated Ozark, 9-5, inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 21-6 this season and 17-6 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs raced out to a 4-0 lead after four innings before the Generals scored three runs in the top of the fifth.  St. Joseph bounced back with four runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning and Ozark never got closer than two runs the rest of the way.

St. Joe pounded out 13 hits as Kris Koerper led the way as he went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored.  Brent Seifert, Brock Chaffin, Jordan Guida and Mark Robinette each added two hits each.  Benton graduate Jake Kretzer also had two RBI on two sacrifice flies.

Kyle Jackson (3-1) worked six innings to get the win on the mound.  He allowed six runs and three unearned runs, while striking out four and walking two.

The Mustangs are back at home Saturday night as they host Sedalia inside Phil Welch Stadium at 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs lose back-to-back games for the first time this season

The St. Joseph Mustangs returned to Phil Welch Stadium Thursday night but lost to Chillicothe in 11 innings, 7-6.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team has now lost consecutive games for the first time this season and they’ve dropped three of their last four games.

Chillicothe, who beat St. Joseph Wednesday 8-4, jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fifth inning before the Mustangs began their rally.

St. Joe scored a single run in the fifth inning and then Kris Koerper hit a 3-run home run in the sixth to pull the Mustangs within one.

The Mudcats added a run in the seventh inning, but St. Joseph answered right back with a Jordan Guida sacrifice fly in the seventh and a Spiker Helms RBI double in the eighth to tie the score 6-6.

The game remain tied until the 11th inning when Chillicothe got a two-out RBI single from Matt Creel.

Doug Shields suffered the loss in relief as he went three innings and allowed four hits and one run.  Kyle Hassna started the game but lasted just five innings and gave up seven hits and five runs.

Koerper led the way as he finished 2-for-4 with that three-run home run and two runs scored.  Cameron Bentley, Spiker Helms, T.J. Dailey and Jeff Roy all added two hits each as the Mustangs had 13 total hits.

St. Joseph falls to 20-6 overall and 16-6 in the MINK League.  They are back inside Phil Welch Stadium Friday night as they entertain Ozark at 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs lose at Chillicothe on walk-off grand slam

The St. Joseph Mustangs finished their four-game road trip 2-2 after losing at Chillicothe on Wednesday, 8-4.

Chillicothe’s Zach Esquerra hit a two-out walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning off St. Joe starter Andrew Polly to cap the Mudcats rally.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the seventh inning and they led 4-2 after seven.

Chillicothe tied the game with two in the eighth inning and Esquerra won it in the ninth.

Polly (1-2) went 8.2 innings but allowed eight runs on 14 hits.  He struck out nine and walked just one.

Brock Chaffin led the Mustangs offense as he finished the night 3-for-5 with two RBI.  Benton graduate Jake Kretzer added two hits, including his third home run of the season.  Brent Seifert had two hits and he scored two runs.

St. Joseph falls to 20-5 this season and 16-5 in the MINK League.  They return home Thursday to host Chillicothe at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Mustangs rally past Joplin and win in 12 innings

The St. Joseph Mustangs rallied from a 6-4 deficit and got a two-out RBI double from Jordan Guida in the 12th inning Tuesday night to win at Joplin, 7-6.

Guida was 0-for-6 before his go-ahead base hit in the 12th inning.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning and led 4-1 in the third before Joplin scored three runs in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth.

The Outlaws led 6-4 until St. Joseph got a two-out RBI single from Mark Robinette in the seventh and a two-out RBI double from Brock Chaffin in the eighth inning to tie the game.

The Mustangs bullpen was sensational Tuesday as three relievers combined to work 7.1 innings of scoreless baseball.

Robinette had a huge game as he earned the win on the mound by going the final 4.2 innings.  He allowed five hits, no runs, one walk and struck out nine batters.  Robinette also finished 4-for-6 at the plate to lead the Mustangs offense.

Chaffin and Brent Seifert added three hits each, while Seifert scored three runs and Cameron Bentley scored twice.

Cody Cunningham started the game for St. Joseph as he lasted just 4.2 innings and gave up six runs and eight hits.  He didn’t record a strikeout and walked four batters.

The Mustangs close out their four-game road trip Wednesday night as they travel to Chillicothe.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs’ five-game win streak snapped at Joplin

The St. Joseph Mustangs had their five-game winning streak snapped Monday night as they lost at Joplin, 12-4.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team drops to 19-4 this season and 15-4 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs had to play from behind early Monday night as Joplin took a 3-0 lead after two innings.  St. Joseph rallied to take the lead 4-3 in the top of the fifth inning, but the Outlaws answered with three in the bottom of the fifth, four more runs in the sixth inning and they capped off the win with two in the eighth.

All four pitchers that threw for the Mustangs allowed at least two runs and they combined to walk 11 batters.  Cody Lane fell to 2-1 as he allowed three runs on four hits in just three innings of work.

Royce Duncan gave up three runs in 1.2 innings, Ryan Price allowed four in one inning pitched and Jordan Clark went 2.1 innings and gave up two runs.

St. Joe 3B Brent Seifert led the offense with two hits, two runs scored and one RBI.  Six other Mustangs had at least one hit in game.

St. Joseph will play again in Joplin Tuesday night as the first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs continue hot streak with win at Ozark

The St. Joseph Mustangs opened a four-game road trip Sunday with a convincing 15-3 win at Ozark.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team won it’s fifth consecutive game as they improve to 19-3 and 15-3 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs offense stayed hot as they’ve scored at least 14 runs in four of their last five games.

St. Joseph scored three runs in the first inning to grab an early lead before Ozark rallied back to within 4-2 after three innings.  The Mustangs then scored five runs over the next three innings and put the game away with a six-run seventh.

Brent Seifert led the way again as he had three hits, including a home run and two RBI.  Benton graduate Jake Kretzer and Jordan Guida both had two hits, a home run and three RBI, while Brock Chaffin and T.J. Dailey added three hits each.

Northwest Missouri State graduate Jayson Huett (2-0) earned the win as he allowed five hits and three runs in seven innings pitched.  He struck out seven and walked one.

The Mustangs continue their road trip Monday as they play at Joplin.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m.

St. Joseph shuts out Ozark to sweep doubleheader

The St. Joseph Mustangs scored double figure runs for the third time in four games Saturday night in the second game of a doubleheader sweep against Ozark inside Phil Welch Stadium.  The Mustangs shutout the Generals 14-0 as they finish their five-game home stand 4-1.

Just like game one, the Mustangs galloped out to a big lead earlier by scoring five runs in the first inning, three in the second and four runs in the third inning.

Brent Seifert had two hits as he hit his third home run of the season and drove in four runs.  Jeff Roy also had two hits and four RBI.

St. Joseph was helped out Saturday by five Ozark errors and eight walks which accounted for five unearned runs.

Adam Maddox (2-0) went six scoreless innings to get the win as he allowed just four hits.  He struck out six and walked one.

The Mustangs are back on the road Sunday as they play at Ozark in another doubleheader that begins at 5:00 p.m.

Mustangs win opener against Ozark Saturday

The St. Joseph Mustangs won their third consecutive game Saturday, 7-5, in the first game of a doubleheader against Ozark at Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team has now won seven of its last eight games as they improve to 17-3 and 13-3 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs jumped on the Generals early with three runs in the first inning and then they broke open a 3-2 game with three more runs in the fourth.

Ozark pulled to within one run again in the fifth inning, but St. Joseph scored one in the bottom half of the fifth and the Mustangs bullpen threw 4.1 scoreless innings.  Ryan Price picked up the win in relief and Doug Shields earned the save.

Ben Baker started for St. Joe but allowed five runs and five hits in 4.2 innings.

Cameron Bentley and Spiker Helms led the Mustangs offense as they each had two hits and drove in two runs.  Kris Koerper added two hits and he had one RBI.

Mustangs offense keeps rolling in big win over Nevada

One night after scoring a franchise record 21 runs, the St. Joseph Mustangs put 15 more on the board and rolled past Nevada Friday night at Phil Welch Stadium, 15-6.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team pounded out 20 hits and now have 43 hits in their last two games as they improve to 16-3 this season and 12-3 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs took a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Jordan Guida hit a two-out two-run home run to cap off the inning.

St. Joseph eventually led 12-0 before Nevada finally broke through in the seventh inning with five runs.

Cameron Bentley led the way offensively as he finished the night 5-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI.  Jake Kretzer added three hits and three runs scored, Guida had two hits and three RBI, and Brent Siefert and Will Mulligan each drove in two runs.

Kyle Jackson (2-1) earned the win on the mound as he went 6.2 innings and allowed five runs on five hits.  He struck out five and walked two.

The Mustangs are back at home Saturday for a doubleheader against Ozark.  The first pitch of game one is set for 5:00 p.m. at Phil Welch Stadium.

Mustangs set records in 21-6 win over Mac-N-Seitz

The St. Joseph Mustangs set franchise records of 21 runs and 23 hits in their 21-6 win over Mac-N-Seitz Thursday night at Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team bounced back from their loss to Omaha on Wednesday to improve to 15-3 this season.

The Mustangs scored five runs in the first inning and added two in the second to grab the early lead.

The Indians scored two runs in the third inning, but that’s as close as they’d get.  St. Joseph added four in the fifth, two in the sixth inning, five runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth inning.

Every Mustangs that had a plate appearance had at least one hit.  Brent Siefert, Brock Chaffin and Mark Robinette and four hits each.

Siefert hits two home runs and drove in four runs, Chaffin scored three runs and and one RBI, and Robinette scored four times and he drove in two runs.

Jordan Guida added two hits and three RBI, while Bishop LeBlond graduate Andrew Nellestein had four RBI.

Kyle Hassna, who was making his Mustang debut, earned the win as he allowed two earned runs and six hits in six innings of work.  He struck out seven and walked just one.

St. Joe is back inside Phil Welch Stadium Friday night as they return to MINK League play against Nevada.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m.
