(Video) Xavier/Cincinnati Bench-Clearing Brawl

Eighth-ranked Xavier defeated crosstown rival Cincinnati 76-53 on Saturday in a game marred by an on-court brawl in the closing seconds. Officials were forced to end the game early when the bench-clearing incident erupted with 9.4 seconds left. It started when Xavier’s Dezmine Wells shoved Cincinnati’s Ge’Lawn Guyn as the Bearcats freshman jawed with Xavier guard Tu Holloway near one of the baskets. Players came together in a scrum as officials and coaches tried to separate them. Replays showed UC forward Yancy Gates connecting with a punch to the face of Xavier center Kenny Frease, who dropped to the ground. The blow opened a cut over Frease’s left eye.

But things turned ugly when demonstrators began attacking police and setting fire to cars and buildings. The violence then spread to a neighboring district. Eventually, rioting spread to a half a dozen British cities.

(VIDEO) Worst Call Ever?

If you perform a Google search on Jerry Meals, about 11,200,000 results will come up, including nearly 500 articles about Tuesday night’s game between the Pirates and the Braves.

The 19-inning affair was determined on a blown call by Meals, the home plate umpire, after exactly 599 pitches over six hours and 39 minutes.

Meals, a veteran of 14 MLB seasons, told reporters Julio Lugo should have been called out. Multiple instant replays showed that Pirates catcher Mike McKenry tagged Lugo on the knee, or thereabouts.
