Brent Olsen of Westford, Vermont, awoke to a moose apparently climbing onto the hood of his car. After unsuccessfully trying to scare the animal away, Olsen took his video camera out to film the moose – when it attacked him.

Ron Paul supporters revolted over new rules at the Republican National Convention Tuesday.  Republicans offered an olive branch on Wednesday with a video tribute to Paul and a speech by his son, Sen. Rand Paul.

It didn’t work.

Dozens of delegates and supporters staged an organized, angry and very loud walkout from the convention floor.

It was the second day in a row in which Paul delegates’ anger at Republican officials over efforts to prevent them from claiming other candidates’ delegates boiled over into open defiance.

Embattled Missouri Republican Congressman Todd Akin insisted Tuesday he would not pull out of his Senate campaign against Democrat Claire McCaskill.

Akin’s comments about pregnancy and rape have become the fodder for news stories across the political spectrum and across the country. His reluctance comes with a new commercial in which he apologizes for the comments.

U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt, former Senators John Ashcroft, John Danforth, Kit Bond and Jim Talent are asking Akin to drop out of the race. The current and former lawmakers released the following statement:

“We do not believe it serves the national interest for Congressman Akin to stay in the race. The issues at stake are too big, and this election is simply too important. The right decision is to step aside.”

American Crossroads, the Superpac that has already spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for campaign commercials supporting Akin, is now asking Akin to withdraw. Here’s a statement released today by American Crossroads:

“Rep. Akin faces a simple choice: Will he help Democrats hold the McCaskill seat and potentially the Senate majority by staying in the race, or will he help Republicans defeat Barack Obama’s most reliable ally in the Senate by getting out?”

Dr. Jack Willke, founder of National and International Right to Life, offered an open letter on Tuesday:

“I made the opportunity today to talk with Rep. Todd Akin because I was so outraged at how quickly Republican leaders have deserted him. After talking with Rep. Akin, I’m even more outraged.

“Rep. Akin remains a strong and courageous pro-life leader—and awkward wording in one sound-bite doesn’t negate that. His traditional pro-life position to protect every innocent human life has been completely distorted by the national media and even the Republican Party.”

At a campaign event in suburban St Louis, Senator McCaskill said Missourians should be allowed to make a choice “based on policy, not backroom politics.” McCaskill says she’s startled that “party bigwigs are coming down” on Akin.

U.S. Representative and Senate candidate Todd Akin is facing a firestorm of criticism for comments he made during an interview with KTVI-TV (Fox-2) in St Louis released over the weekend. Now Akin says he misspoke.

During that interview recorded a week ago, Akin was asked whether abortion should be allowed in the case of rape.

Akin responsed that it’s rare for someone to become pregnant from rape. He said, “The female body has ways to try and shut that whole thing down.” He went on to say that punishment should be on the rapist and not the child.

Democrats started circulating his comment after the show aired citing statistics regarding rape and pregnancy.

“It is beyond comprehension that someone can be so ignorant about the emotional and physical trauma brought on by rape,” said Sen. McCaskill through a statement sent to the television station.

The Akin camp responded with a statement indicating the congressman misspoke.

“In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it’s clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year,” Akin said. “Those who perpetrate these crimes are the lowest of the low in our society and their victims will have no stronger advocate in the Senate to help ensure they have the justice they deserve.

“But I believe deeply in the protection of all life and I do not believe that harming another innocent victim is the right course of action.”

The McCaskill campaign released a statement on the comments, which she labeled as “offensive.” As a former prosecutor, McCaskill has worked closely with hundreds of rape victims and her campaign says she intimately understands their trauma and pain. She says it is that experience that makes Akin’s statements so outrageous.

“It is beyond comprehension that someone can be so ignorant about the emotional and physical trauma brought on by rape,” said McCaskill. “The ideas that Todd Akin has expressed about the serious crime of rape and the impact on its victims are offensive.”

Vice President Joe Biden may have put his foot in his mouth during a speech to a mixed-race crowd this week in Danville, Virginia.

Republicans were quick to pounce. CNBC was quick to misquote Biden. Rudi Giuliani says “the Vice President of the United States has become a laugh line on late night television.”

Earlier this week NASA safely landed a robotic rover on Mars about 150 million miles away. But on Thursday here on Earth, a test model planetary lander crashed and burned at Kennedy Space Center in Florida just seconds after liftoff.

NASA spokeswoman Lisa Malone said it appears that the methane-and-liquid oxygen powered lander is a total loss. Nobody was hurt in the unmanned experiment.

The lander was built mostly with low-cost, off-the-shelf materials. It was an attempt by NASA to use cheaper, more readily available and environmentally friendly methane rocket fuel.
