Business border war bill in the Mo. House

Missouri House Speaker Tim Jones

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri House Speaker Tim Jones has filed legislation that would call a truce in the Kansas City area battle for businesses between Missouri and Kansas.

The bill introduced Wednesday would apply to four counties on each side of the Missouri-Kansas border.

Missouri would stop offering tax breaks to companies from the Kansas counties, so long as a similar bill or executive order is enacted in Kansas. But if Kansas offers tax breaks to lure Missouri companies, then the truce would be off.

The four counties in Missouri are Jackson, Clay, Platte and Cass. The four Kansas counties are Wyandotte, Johnson, Douglas and Miami.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon and Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback have both expressed support for a moratorium in the multi-million-dollar tax break battle.

(AP) — Cheerios is bringing back an interracial family to star in its Super Bowl ad.

They were featured in an ad last year that made headlines after it sparked ugly comments online. But the negative remarks were followed by an outpouring of support for the fictional family made up of a black dad, white mom and their young daughter.

General Mills, which owns Cheerios, said at the time that it cast the actors to reflect the changing U.S. population. Despite the controversy, the Minneapolis-based company continued running the ad for several months as planned.

Mo. Mom Charged in Young Daughter’s Drowning

Court (AP) – A rural Clay County woman has been charged with second-degree murder and first-degree child endangerment in the drowning death of her 19-month old daughter in October.

A grand jury on Tuesday returned an indictment against 27-year-old Amberlyn Farrow, who lives on a farm near Holt about half an hour northeast of Kansas City. She was taken into custody Tuesday and was being held on $500,000 bond.

A spokesman for the Clay County prosecutor’s office said Wednesday she didn’t have an attorney.

Sheriff’s deputies were called at 10 p.m. Oct. 16 to Farrow’s home to investigate the death of the girl, who appeared to have drowned in a pond. The grand jury said Farrow created a substantial risk when she took the girl to the pond and failed to protect her.

Mo. based discount brokerage fined $2.5M

cash-money(AP) — Federal regulators say St. Louis-based discount brokerage firm Scottrade has agreed to pay $2.5 million in fines for not providing the agency accurate and complete details about trades.

In announcing the action, the Securities and Exchange Commission said Scottrade failed to satisfactorily honor the agency’s request for specifics about certain trades between 2006 and 2012.

The SEC says the requests were part of its December 2011 probe of suspicious trades made in a Scottrade online brokerage account that was the apparent victim of account intrusion.

Scottrade says the omissions were “inadvertently” caused by a computer-programming error, and the company promptly corrected the issue when it was discovered.

(AP) — University of Missouri President Tim Wolfe says the four-campus system is committed to bolstering its mental health services as a separate legal review of a former school swimmer’s suicide is expected to soon begin.

Wolfe spoke personally Wednesday about Sasha Menu Courey’s 2011 death, noting that his own daughter is a first-year college athlete.

He told reporters that “one of our students is dead. And I don’t want to feel that anymore.”

The university’s Board of Curators is expected to vote later Wednesday on Wolfe’s request for an independent report on how the school handled Menu Courey’s death and her claims of a sexual assault by several football players when she was a freshman.
