Missouri Western volleyball defeated Lindenwood Saturday afternoon 3-0 (25-11, 25-23, 25-15). The Griffons are now 14-15 overall as are the Lions.

The Griffons won the first set 25-11. They never trailed, taking a double-digit lead with a kill by Stephanie Hattey to mark it 19-8. Missouri Western continued to dominate the rest of the way, winning the set 25-11.

The second set was the closest of the match, as the two teams matched points until it was tied at 19. The Griffons made a late run to secure the second game 25-23 and go up 2-0.

MWSU finished the match with a 25-15 third-set victory to pick up the road win.

Kansas State remains unbeaten with 44-30 victory over Oklahoma State

Collin Klein piled up more than 300 yards of offense before leaving in the third quarter with an undisclosed injury, and No. 3 Kansas State remained unbeaten with a 44-30 victory over Oklahoma State on Saturday night.

Klein had thrown for 245 yards and run for 64 more before sneaking in for his 50th career rushing touchdown with 9:47 left in the third quarter. The Heisman Trophy front-runner didn’t return to the field on the Wildcats’ next offensive series.

Oklahoma State’s Wes Lunt also left with an injury after throwing his third interception in the third quarter. The freshman quarterback, who missed six weeks with a knee injury earlier this year, threw for 184 yards and a touchdown before giving way to Clint Chelf.

By that point, the Wildcats (9-0, 6-0 Big 12) simply had to protect a 38-17 lead.

Allen Chapman picked off three passes and returned one 29 yards for a touchdown, John Hubert had a pair of TD runs, and Tyler Lockett returned a kickoff 100 yards for another score as Kansas State kept alive its hopes of playing for a national championship.

The Wildcats entered the weekend No. 2 in the BCS standings behind Alabama.

Chelf finished 16 of 27 for 233 yards and a touchdown for the Cowboys (5-3, 3-2), who should know something about playing late-season spoiler to a team in title contention.

Oklahoma State was ranked No. 2 when it lost to Iowa State late last season, and got shut out of the BCS title game.

This one was just about as wild as last season’s matchup in Stillwater, when the Cowboys held on in the final minutes after the teams combined for 32 fourth-quarter points.

Oklahoma State struck first when Lunt hit Austin Hays for a 54-yard touchdown reception, but the Wildcats came back with 17 unanswered points – Hubert’s two touchdown runs were sandwiched around the first of Anthony Cantele’s three field goals.

Quinn Sharp added the first of his three field goals to get the Cowboys within 17-10 before the fireworks really started: Lockett field the ensuing kickoff deep in his end zone and went the distance for his fourth career TD return, and Desmond Roland answered by fielding a short kickoff by Kansas State and going 80 yards for another touchdown return.

Chapman’s pick-six made it 31-17 at halftime.

The Cowboys had the ball to start the second half, and Lunt appeared to get hurt while throwing an interception to Nigel Malone. He never returned to the game.

The Wildcats marched 93 yards before Klein’s touchdown plunge from a yard out made it 38-17, but he also left the game with an injury. Daniel Sams played the rest of the way for Kansas State while Klein watched from the sideline without his helmet.

Sharp and Cantele traded field goals before Chelf hit Charlie Moore for a 13-yard touchdown catch to get the Cowboys within 41-27. The two kickers traded field goals again before Cantele missed from 24 yards to give Oklahoma State the ball with 4 1/2 minutes left in the game.

The Cowboys marched to the Kansas State 8, but Chapman picked off Chelf in the end zone for his final interception of the night. The three picks were one shy of Jaime Mendez’s school record set against Temple on Sept. 26, 1992.

Kansas State ran out the clock to end the Cowboys’ three-game winning streak and lock up its first win over them since 2006. The Wildcats have scored at least 44 points six times this season, and this time did it against a team that had allowed 38 total over its last three games.

KU stays winless in Big 12 with loss at Baylor

Nick Florence threw for 367 yards and three touchdowns, running back Lache Seastrunk had 194 total yards and Baylor won its first Big 12 game of the season, beating Kansas 41-14 Saturday.

Baylor (4-4, 1-4) led 20-14 at halftime before pulling away in the second half to snap a four-game losing streak.

Florence was 26 of 42 and surpassed 3,000 yards passing for the season. The senior had touchdown passes of 11, 68 and 40 yards.

James Sims had 126 rushing yards for Kansas (1-8, 0-6), which lost its eighth in a row and 18th straight Big 12 game. The Jayhawks last won a conference game on Nov. 6, 2010, against Colorado, now of the Pac-12.

Glasco Martin rushed for 157 yards and Terrance Williams had 11 catches for 137 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown on Baylor’s opening drive.

Baylor’s defense allowed 210 points during the losing streak before tightening up in the second half on Saturday.

The Bears stuffed Taylor Cox’s fourth-and-2 run on the first drive of the second half. Baylor capitalized four plays later on Bryce Petty’s 1-yard TD run.

After Ahmad Dixon intercepted a pass at the Kansas 40, Florence had a 7-yard TD run to extend Baylor’s lead to 34-14 with 2:24 remaining in the third quarter.

The senior quarterback added a 40-yard touchdown pass to Tevin Reese in the fourth quarter as the Bears finished with 666 total yards.

Florence came into the game leading the nation in passing yards. He now has 3,019 yards and 25 touchdowns.

Florence hit 5 of 6 passes on the opening drive of the game.

Seastrunk, a transfer from Oregon who sat out last season, broke free in the Kansas secondary and caught a 68-yard touchdown pass to push Baylor’s lead to 14-0 in the first quarter, the Bears’ 11th play of 50 or more yards this season. Seastrunk had 103 yards rushing and 91 receiving.

Sims’ 58-yard touchdown run cut the deficit to 14-7. The junior has rushed for more than 100 yards in five straight games.

Kansas quarterback Michael Cummings, who made his third career start just 60 miles away from his hometown of Killeen, added a 22-yard TD run in the second quarter.

Aaron Jones kicked two field goals in the second quarter, including a 22-yarder that put the Bears up 20-14 just before halftime.

The game was delayed for 46 minutes just before the start of the third quarter after lightning was reported within 7 miles of Floyd Casey Stadium.

Fans were advised to take cover for an incoming storm, but it barely rained during the stoppage. There was a light rain at the start of the third quarter that let up after several minutes.

Royals make multiple roster moves Friday

The Kansas City Royals announced Friday several 40-man Major League roster moves.  Following the moves, the Royals now have 40 players on the club’s 40-man roster.

The club has reinstated left-handed pitcher Danny Duffy and right-handed pitcher Felipe Paulino from the 60-day Disabled List.  Both pitchers underwent ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction (Tommy John surgery) during the 2012 season:  Duffy on his left elbow on June 13 and Paulino on his right elbow on July 3.

In addition, the club claimed right-handed pitcher Guillermo Moscoso on Outright Waivers from the Colorado Rockies and claimed catcher Brett Hayes on Outright Waivers from the Miami Marlins.

Leaving the Royals organization is right-handed pitcher Blake Wood, who was claimed on Outright Waivers by the Cleveland Indians.

Catcher Manuel Pina was assigned outright to Omaha while left-handed pitcher Tommy Hottovy, right-handed pitcher Jeremy Jeffress and outfielder Jason Bourgeois were designated for assignment.

The 28-year-old Moscoso (name is pronounced “jee-AIR-moh mahs-KOH-soh”), who will turn 29 on November 14, has pitched for parts of the past four seasons in the Majors with the Rangers (2009-10), Athletics (2011) and Rockies (2012).  The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder made 23 appearances, including three starts, for Colorado last season and went 3-2 with a 6.12 ERA.  His best season came in 2011 with Oakland when he compiled an 8-10 record with a 3.38 ERA in 23 games (21 starts), allowing three hits or fewer in eight starts.  Born in Maracay, Venezuela, Moscoso was originally signed by the Detroit Tigers as a non-drafted free agent in 2003.

Hayes, 28, has worked as the Marlins backup catcher for parts of the past four seasons.  In 39 games in 2012, he batted .202 with six doubles after hitting .231 with five home runs and 16 RBI in 64 contests in 2011.  Known as a strong defensive catcher, Hayes has caught 19 of 74 attempted basestealers in his career (26%).  The 6-foot, 201-pound right-handed hitter was the Marlins’ second-round selection in the 2005 draft out of the University of Nevada.  His father, Tim Hayes, was drafted by the Royals but never played professionally.

MWSU volleyball team gets swept at No. 6 Central Missouri

The Missouri Western volleyball team played No. 6 ranked Central Missouri tough in all three sets in Warrensburg, Mo., but fell short in all three games, losing 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-21).

In the first set, the Griffons jumped out to a 6-3 lead behind two kills from Stephanie Hattey, assisted by Jordan Chohon. The Jennies rallied back though to take a 17-16 lead and led on from there to take the first set 25-20.

MWSU took a big lead in the second set as it led 15-7. The Jennies again rallied back, though. Central Missouri went on a 12-2 run to take a 19-17 lead and controlled the set the rest of the way to go ahead 2-0.

In the final set, neither team led by more than two throughout until Central Missouri took a 23-20 lead. That helped the Jennies secure the match 3-0 and improve to 22-4 (14-1, MIAA) as the Griffons fell to 13-15 (4-11).

Bearcat women lose exhibition game at Iowa State, 80-33

A tough brand of in your face defense opened the Mark Kellogg era for the Northwest Missouri State women’s basketball team. However, a hot second half from NCAA Division I Iowa State pushed the Cyclones past the Bearcats 80-33 in exhibition action from Hilton Coliseum.

Northwest jumped out to a hounding full-court press, catching the Cyclones off guard to start the game. The Bearcats would keep the game within 10 points most of the first half until Iowa State’s 7-0 run to end the first half and push the lead to 30-11 at intermission.

Led by 6’7” WNBA prospect, Anna Prins, the Cyclones exploded in the second half to shoot over 60 percent from the field as Northwest struggled offensively shooting just 20 percent for the game. Prins finished with 11 points as Chelsea Poppens lead all players with 22.

The Bearcats were led by Victoria Naylor who finished with seven points and made one of the Bearcats four three-pointers. Northwest was just 4-of-26 from behind the three-point arc in the loss.

In all, every Bearcat saw minutes in the season’s first exhibition action with nine different players scoring for Northwest.

Northwest also shot well from the free-throw line finishing 7-of-10. Both Ashleigh Nelson and Denise McEnaney were perfect from the line as Nelson finished 2-for-2 and McEnaney went 4-for-4.

Northwest continues exhibition action as they host Peru State to close out Homecoming weekend Saturday evening. Admission for all fans is free as the Mark Kellogg era debuts at Bearcat Arena. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.

Chiefs’ struggles continue as they lose big at San Diego

Norv Turner is off the hot seat, at least for 10 days.

Romeo Crennel is perched squarely on it.

Antonio Gates caught a 14-yard yard scoring pass from Philip Rivers on the game’s opening drive to snap a streak of six straight quarters without a touchdown and the San Diego Chargers went on to a 31-13 victory over the staggering Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night.

Turner had been heavily criticized by fans after the Chargers (4-4) blew double-digit, second-half leads in losses to New Orleans and Denver, and then lost 7-6 at Cleveland on Sunday.

Still, at the start of halftime, some fans in one end zone unfurled a big yellow banner that read: ”Mr. Spanos, please fire A.J. & Norv.”

Team president Dean Spanos decided in January to bring back both Turner and general manager A.J. Smith even though the Chargers missed the playoffs for the second straight year and have only one postseason win in four seasons.

Spanos probably isn’t inclined to fire the embattled Turner in midseason, although a loss to the Chiefs would have been embarrassing.

”We didn’t talk about it specifically, but we want to win for him every week,” Rivers said. ”You play for a lot of things, but we play for our coach. I think that has been evident over the years when we have struggled.”

Rivers, who looked shaky during the losing streak, did his part by completing 18 of 20 passes, or 90 percent, for 220 yards and two touchdowns, with one interception. It was the sixth time in NFL history a quarterback had completed 90 percent or more of his passes, and tied Steve Young for fifth on that list.

Rivers also threw a 13-yard TD pass to Malcom Floyd early in the fourth quarter.

”It was good to play well but more importantly, it was good to win a game. We needed a win in the worst way,” Rivers said. ”Game like this, wins like this can jump start us.”

The Chiefs (1-7) committed four more turnovers and lost their fifth straight game. Running back Jamaal Charles left with a neck injury in the fourth quarter.

”Similar to what’s been happening throughout the course of this year, we shoot ourselves in the foot,” Crennel said. ”We’re in a hole and we have to fight our way out. … It wasn’t very good overall, but we’re going to keep coaching and keep fighting and play our way out of it.”

The Chiefs’ four turnovers ran their NFL-high mark to a staggering 29, which have led to 104 points.

”We fought hard, played hard, but at the end of the game it came down to the turnovers,” said quarterback Matt Cassel, whose fumble and interception both led to a Chargers TD.

The Chiefs still haven’t led in regulation this season. Their only victory came when Ryan Succop kicked the winning field goal against the Saints in overtime.

With the Chiefs trailing 17-6, Cassel fumbled as he was sacked by Jarret Johnson in the end zone and Shaun Phillips recovered for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. On the next drive, Cassel’s high pass deflected off Dexter McCluster’s hands and was intercepted by Demorrio Williams, who returned it 59 yards for a touchdown.

”I don’t know If someone stepped in front of him and tipped the ball but thank God I was there to make the play,” Williams said.

In the loss to New Orleans, Williams had an interception return for a touchdown but it was nullified after rookie Melvin Ingram was flagged for a late hit on Drew Brees.

Williams, who played for the Chiefs the last four seasons, forced a fumble in the first quarter.

The Chiefs had six turnovers in a 37-20 home loss to the Chargers on Sept. 30.

In just 2 minutes, 9 seconds, the Chargers’ defense scored as many touchdowns as the offense has in 10 quarters.

Gates’ first-quarter score was San Diego’s first touchdown since the star tight end caught an 11-yard pass in the first half against Denver on Oct. 15. That score gave San Diego a 24-0 lead, but Peyton Manning rallied the Broncos to a 35-24 win.

The Chargers got only two field goals from Nick Novak in a 7-6 loss at Cleveland on Sunday, their third straight defeat.

After San Diego scored on the opening drive, Kansas City went on a 17-play drive, converting four third downs, but Dwayne Bowe fumbled after a 10-yard reception. Williams caused the fumble and Quentin Jammer recovered.

Bowe’s fumble set up Novak’s 25-yard field goal with 9:10 left in the second quarter.

After Kansas City decided not to go for it on fourth-and-1 from the San Diego 31, Succop kicked a 49-yard field goal with 2:51 left before halftime.

The Chargers had a third-and-goal from the 1 in the closing seconds of the half when Rivers was intercepted by Eric Berry.

Succop had a 41-yard field goal in the third quarter.
