MIAA hands out weekly football honors

Central Oklahoma’s Joshua Birmingham, Lindenwood’s Pierre Desir and Northwest Missouri’s Todd Adolf have earned the MIAA Football Athlete of the Week Awards for week four.

MIAA Offensive Athlete of the Week

Joshua Birmingham, RB, Central Oklahoma

Birmingham rushed for 137 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries to help lead Central Oklahoma to their first ever MIAA win in an upset of #9 Washburn. He had nine carries for 94 yards in the fourth quarter alone as the Bronchos pushed a 20-14 lead to 35-14. His 40-yard scamper helped set up a one yard TD run by Christian Bobo and Birmingham made it a 35-14 game with an eight yard score himself. He becomes the first non-quarterback this season to win the award as he is averaging 103.2 yards per game on the ground. The 5-9 running back is a native of Luther, Okla. where he competed at Luther High School.

MIAA Defensive Athlete of the Week

Pierre Desir, DB, Lindenwood

Desir helped the Lindenwood defense seal the victory in a 28-24 come from behind win over Glenville State. After LWU took a 28-24 lead he made two tackles and intercepted a pass in what would prove to be the Pioneers final drive of the game. His interception came on 4th and 13 as the Pioneers tried to move the ball for a score. He finished the game with 11 tackles and had three tackles for a loss. The 6-2 defensive back is a native of St. Charles, Mo. and transferred to Lindenwood after playing at Washburn University after attending high school at Francis Howell Central.

KSU’s Doerr named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week

With field position playing a critical role in Kansas State’s 24-19 victory at No. 5 Oklahoma Saturday, Wildcat punter Ryan Doerr was named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

Doerr picked up his first career honor from the Big 12, while it was K-State’s third honor in as many weeks as Collin Klein was the offensive player of the week following the Miami game and kickoff returner Tyler Lockett collected the special teams honor after his performance against North Texas.

A product of Katy, Texas, Doerr’s honor is the 12th player of the week award by the Wildcats since the beginning of the 2011, the most in the Big 12 and five more than the team in second place (Baylor).

Doerr was called upon five times to pin the Sooners deep in their own territory Saturday night, and each time he forced OU to begin inside its own 20-yard line – including a pair inside the 10-yard line – as he bettered his previous career high of three. OU’s average drive start after Doerr’s punts was the 12-yard line, while his longest punt of the evening was a 49-yarder.

Seventh-ranked Kansas State is idle this week before welcoming Kansas in the Dillon’s Sunflower Showdown at Bill Snyder Family Stadium on Saturday, October 6. Kick time for the game against the Jayhawks will be announced later Monday.

Chiefs rally past New Orleans in OT for first win

Remember the hard-luck Saints of old — that mistake-prone franchise that routinely crumbled in crunch time?

In their first three games since coach Sean Payton was suspended in the NFL’s bounty probe, the Saints have started to resemble that franchise again, and even Drew Brees has been helpless to do anything about it.

The Saints were unable to protect an 18-point, third-quarter lead, and fans in the Superdome watched in dread as Kansas City’s Ryan Succup booted his club-record sixth field goal to lift the previously winless Chiefs to a 27-24 overtime victory over New Orleans on Sunday.

The Saints have now lost twice in the Superdome, where they were unbeaten a season ago, and which will host the Super Bowl next February.

But New Orleans now looks like a long shot to be playing for a championship after opening with losses to three 1-2 teams.

“We are far from talking about the Super Bowl right now,” Brees said. “What need to focus on is getting one win.”

Next week, the reeling Saints (0-3) travel to Green Bay.

The Chiefs (1-2) meanwhile, went home feeling a lot better about not only getting their first victory, but the resolve they showed to get it.

“The best part is our guys never gave up,” said Succop, a perfect 6 for 6 on kicks ranging from 25 to 45 yards. “We kept fighting, it was a huge team win and I’m just really excited to have had a part in it.”

After Jamaal Charles’ 91-yard touchdown run — the longest running play in Chiefs history, and the longest given up by the Saints — started Kansas City’s comeback, the Chiefs defense thwarted a Saints scoring chance when Stanford Routt intercepted Brees’ underthrown pass for Devery Henderson near the Kansas City goal line late in the third quarter. Brees, who was 20-of-36 for 240 yards and three TDs — never had another completion after that, and only attempted six passes because the Saints also never got another first down.

Charles, who finished with 233 yards rushing and 55 yards receiving, scored the only touchdown the Chiefs needed. The rest of the scoring came on field goals, as well as a safety on Justin Houston’s third sack of the game.

“This team needed a win, and a win like that really helped out in particular,” Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel said. “There were a lot of doubts about what we could do and they showed a lot of character.”

Tiring of answering questions about the effects of the bounty scandal on their season, the Saints were once again in no mood to discuss whether things might have been different if Payton were still around.

“All I can say is Sean Payton is a great football coach,” Brees said. “But he’s not here, so the rest of us have to find a way.”

Instead, the Chiefs found a way after their safety got them the ball, down by 3, with 5:33 to go.

Matt Cassel’s spinning scramble and 11-yard pass across the field to Jon Baldwin on third-and-10 extended the drive, which also included Cassel’s completion to Dwayne Bowe on fourth-and-5 before Succop’s 43-yard game-tying kick with 3 seconds left.

In one of several lowlights for the crew of replacement officials working the game, New Orleans was briefly ruled the winner on the field in overtime when running back Shaun Draughn lost the ball stretching for a first down and safety Roman Harper picked up the ball and ran to the end zone.

The fumble was overturned on video review, but the spot came up a half-yard short of a first down. Charles easily converted a fourth-down run to extend the winning drive.

“We knew coming in that we could run against this defense,” Charles said. “It was an opportunity we had to take advantage of.”

The Saints scored first when Lance Moore’s leaping 9-yard catch capped an 83-yard, game-opening drive.

After that, however, no team got in the end zone for the rest of the half, which ended with the Saints up 10-6.

New Orleans appeared to be taking command in the third quarter thanks to a pair of turnovers by the Chiefs.

First came a fumble by Dexter McCluster, who hurt his shoulder while falling on his own after a short catch, then let the ball go moments before he would have been touched down by cornerback Jabari Greer. Officials initially ruled McCluster down while linebacker Jonathan Casillas scooped the ball and ran to the end zone. The Saints challenged and won a reversal on replay review, giving them the ball on the Chiefs 19. That set up Brees’ 1-yard TD pass to tight end Jimmy Graham.

New Orleans then went ahead 24-6 on Brees’ 6-yard swing pass to fullback Jed Collins, capping a short drive set up by Greer’s interception and 28-yard return to the Kansas City 7.

After that, the Saints fell apart in a way they had not in making the playoffs — and winning one title — during the past three seasons.

“We’re obviously disappointed, but not disheartened,” Saints interim head coach Aaron Kromer said. “We don’t know how we’re supposed to act right now.”

Royals lose Odorizzi’s debut Sunday against Cleveland

While Cleveland Indians slugger Carlos Santana is finishing strong, the Kansas City Royals will again be watching the playoffs.

Santana hit two homers and drove in five runs as the Indians routed Kansas City 15-4 Sunday in their highest-scoring game of the season.

Santana connected for a two-run shot in the sixth inning off Jake Odorizzi, who lost in his major league debut. Santana added his team-leading 18th homer, a three-run drive during a seven-run ninth.

“Carlos had a great day,” Indians manager Manny Acta said. “That two-run homer was huge. It gave us the lead. I’m happy for the day he had. For a moment there, I was thinking we weren’t going to have one guy with 75 RBIs on the whole team. He did it, and it looks like (Jason) Kipnis with 70 might able to do that, too.”

Santana, who has 13 home runs and 45 RBIs in 65 games since July 15, matched his career high with five RBIs. It was his third career multihomer game.

“It was a very good day for me and the pitchers,” Santana said. “The key for us is to finish strong.”

The loss officially eliminated the Royals from playoff contention and assured them of another losing record. Kansas City has not made the postseason since winning the 1985 World Series, the longest active playoff drought in the majors.

David Huff (2-0) held the Royals to one run on three hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Santana’s first homer put the Indians ahead 3-1. Cleveland added five runs in the seventh and pulled away in the ninth.

The Indians spoiled the day for Odorizzi (0-1), one of four players acquired in the 2010 trade for Zack Greinke.

Odorizzi limited Cleveland to a pair of singles by Shin-Soo Choo for the first five innings. After retiring Choo to lead off the sixth, Odorizzi allowed three runs on four consecutive hits.

“I thought he did an outstanding job for his first start,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “He’s got all the intangibles. He fields his position. He commands the baseball. He changes speeds. He’s got great composure and a great competitive nature.”

Kipnis tripled and scored on Asdrubal Cabrera’s single before Santana’s homer.

The Indians combined four singles, three walks and two Kansas City errors in the seventh. The Royals used three relief pitchers with Vin Mazzaro retiring none of the four batters he faced.

Casey Kotchman and Jack Hannahan hit RBI singles and Cabrera drove in a run with a groundout. The other two Cleveland runs that inning scored after throwing errors by right fielder Jeff Francoeur and catcher Adam Moore.

The Indians added six of their seven runs in the ninth off Jeremy Jeffress, who threw only 18 strikes in 40 pitches. He walked three, including Choo with the bases loaded.

Moore, who was making his Royals debut, homered in the third. It was his first homer since Sept. 7, 2010 while with Seattle.

Francoeur had three hits and drove in a run. Billy Butler contributed a run-producing double, upping his RBIs total to 101.
