riggertMissouriWesternThe 24th ranked Missouri Western softball team got back on  track sweeping a doubleheader against the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers on  Saturday afternoon. The Griffons got strong pitching performances from Jackie Bishop and Janie Smith improving to 26-10 overall and 10-4 in MIAA play.

Game 1
MWSU 7, UNK 1

In game one the Griffons used two big innings and a strong pitching performance by Bishop earning a 7-1 victory. The Griffons had 12 hits in the contest with four players getting two hits.

The Griffons broke the game open in the third inning scoring four runs on five hits with two out. The Griffons got five hits in a row with Kandall Sorensen and Taylor Anding each getting two RBI doubles giving MWSU the 4-0 lead after three.

The Griffons tacked on three more in the top of the fifth getting four more hits with Kat Steponovich getting a two RBI on a single to center field. After the fifth the Griffons led 7-0.

Bishop went six innings giving up just three hits while striking out six and walking just two. She improves to 13-4 with the victory.

The Lopers had four hits with four different players getting hits. Taryn Trosper got the loss going 2.2 innings giving up seven hits and four earned runs. She falls to 1-4 on the season.

Game 2
MWSU 8, UNK 5 (10 innings)

In game two the Griffons came from behind picking up the big road victory. MWSU got 13 hits with Gillaspy going 3-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored.

Gilaspy opened up the game getting her 7th homer of the season in the top of the first giving MWSU the 2-0 lead. The Lopers responded getting two runs in both the first and second inning taking a 4-2 lead after two.

The Griffons got one back in the top of the third on a double from Keri Lorbert and an RBI single from Gillaspy cutting the Loper lead to 4-3 after three.

Janie Smith settled down nicely holding the Lopers to no runs for three straight innings, but in the bottom of the sixth the Lopers got another run giving them the 5-3 lead after six.

In the seventh Brooke Schaben led off the innning with a double and then Bre Fleschner got on by an error by the second baseman. Fleschner would steal second and Gillaspy singled in both runners tying the score at five.

Smith held the Lopers scoreless the rest of the way and finally in the 10th the Griffons broke the tie. Gillaspy started at second due to the international tie-breaker rule and scored on a passed ball. Maegan Roemmich hit her 6th homer of the season later in the inning giving the Griffons the 8-5 lead.

Smith picked up her 13th victory of the season going all 10 innings. She gave up 11 hits while striking out a season high eight. Keri Lorbert, Michelle Stevenson, Roemmich and Anding all had two hits in the game.

The Lopers fall to 7-21 on the season and 2-10 in MIAA play. Mallory Noakes, Jen Kramer and Kenzie Helmink all had two hits while Bailey Backhuus got the loss going 3.2 innings giving up three hits and two earned runs while striking out wo.

The Griffons return to MIAA action with a double header against the Lincoln Blue Tigers. Game time is set for 5:00 pm from the MWSU Softball Field.

Royals, Holland blow 2-run ninth inning lead and lose to Phillies

RoyalsPinch-hitter Kevin Frandsen hit a bases-clearing, three-run double with two outs in the ninth off closer Greg Holland to lift the Phillies to a 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night in front of the smallest crowd in Philadelphia in four years.

The Phillies had just two hits and trailed 3-1 to start the inning. Holland (0-1) walked Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Michael Young to load the bases. He then struck out Domonic Brown swinging and fanned John Mayberry Jr. looking.

But Frandsen ripped a first-pitch fastball to right-center to knock in all three runners. Young slid in safely well ahead of the throw and the dugout emptied as players mobbed Frandsen.

Royals starter Luis Mendoza threw six stellar innings, and the Royals’ bullpen went into the ninth with seven hitless innings in the series.

Antonio Bastardo (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the win. John Lannan was sharp in his Phillies debut. He allowed three runs and five hits, striking out five in seven innings.

Mendoza allowed one run and two hits, striking out seven.

The Phillies are 2-3 and were looking more like the team that went 81-81 last year after winning five straight NL East titles from 2007-11.

Then came the ninth-inning rally. There weren’t many fans left to witness it, however.

A crowd of 39,475 at Citizens Bank Park was the first under 40,000 since April 29, 2009, when 36,351 came out for a game against Washington. The Phillies led the majors in attendance each of the last two seasons.

Lannan was cruising along with a no-hitter until the fifth. He hit Lorenzo Cain with a pitch to start the inning and Jeff Francoeur followed with a double down the left field line. Miguel Tejada drove in a run with a groundout to second base and Elliot Johnson singled in a run for a 2-0 lead.

Making just their third-ever trip to Philadelphia, the Royals will try to win the rare interleague series Sunday afternoon. They last played here in 2004.

The Phillies beat Kansas City to win the 1980 World Series and claim the franchise’s first of two championships. They clinched the title with a victory in Game 6 at old Veterans Stadium.

Lannan retired the first nine batters he faced before Alex Gordon reached on second baseman Utley’s fielding error in the fourth. Lannan spent his first six seasons with Washington. He was signed as a free agent by the Phillies not for his performance against them. Lannan was 3-13 with a 5.53 ERA against the Phillies. He entered the game 39-39 with a 3.80 ERA against the rest of the majors.

The Phillies cut it to 2-1 when Ben Revere lined an RBI single off third baseman Tejada’s glove with two outs in the bottom half.

Francoeur led off the seventh with a double to right-center and Tejada followed with a double down the right-field line to make it 3-1.

Northwest softball loses two close games at Fort Hays State

riggertNorthwestThe Northwest Missouri State softball team found out why Fort Hays State in currently the number one team in the conference and No. 18 in the NCAA Saturday as the Bearcats were no-hit in game one losing 1-0 and then falling 4-3 in extra innings in game two.

The pitching matchup between Jenna Creger and Maddie Holub was everything it was expected to be and more. The two pitchers came into the weekend ranking first and second in earned run average in the conference with Holub in first (0.84) and Creger right behind her (1.33).

Both team’s offenses were shut down through the first three innings. Creger gave up her first hit in the bottom of the fourth inning. FHSU later scored in the inning when Holub helped herself out with an RBI double to go up 1-0.

Holub never gave up a hit in the game or allowed anyone to reach base. Holub threw the first perfect game in Fort Hays State history on her way to the victory.

Creger went the distance for the complete game loss giving up only one earned run on two hits while not allowing any walks and collecting three strikeouts.

Northwest scored first in game two when Kristen Uthe hit a solo home run to left field to put her team up 1-0 early.

The Bearcats plated another run in the fifth inning as Labertew led off with a triple and was driven in by Rachel Schmitz. FHSU tied it up in the bottom half of the inning at 2-2.

The offenses exchanged runs again in the sixth inning as Stephanie Price was knocked in by Labertew who doubled down the left field line. In the bottom half of the inning the Tigers strung together a couple hits and scored a run to tie it back up at 3-3.

The game remained tied through the seventh sending the game into extra innings. Northwest left Price stranded on the base in the top half of the inning. FHSU was able to come through with a run to win the game 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth.

The Bearcats move their record to 19-11, 7-7 on the season. After playing their last eight games on the road, Head Coach Ryan Anderson’s team will be back in action at Bearcat Field this week. Northwest will host Lincoln Thursday for a double-header scheduled to start at 2 p.m.

Beltran drives in three to lead Cards past San Francisco

CardsCarlos Beltran is a realist. The St. Louis Cardinals’ season has just begun, so there’s not a lot that can be told from one lousy game – like Friday – or one in which the offense clicks up and down the order as it did a day later.

Yet he is pretty sure the latter provides a better glimpse of what this team can be.

Beltran hit a go-ahead two-run single in the fifth against his former team and Shelby Miller beat the reigning World Series champion San Francisco Giants in his second career start, spoiling Buster Posey’s MVP party at AT&T Park with a 6-3 win on Saturday.

”I feel good, man,” Beltran said. ”This is a good team, a good lineup. We have guys from top to bottom who can do the job. It’s fun. As a player, you just want to go out there and be part of it.”

Pete Kozma had three hits, drove in a run and scored for St. Louis from the No. 8 spot in the order, Matt Holliday singled in a run and Matt Carpenter added an RBI single in the ninth.

Beltran also hit an RBI single in the first against Ryan Vogelsong (0-1) in a matchup of the teams that won the past three World Series – and a rematch of last fall’s NL championship series won in seven games by the Giants.

Hunter Pence hit a solo homer in the second and Pablo Sandoval homered and hit an RBI single. He also played more strong defense for San Francisco on a day Vogelsong (0-1) struggled to consistently command the strike zone.

Posey received his NL MVP plaque in another highlight-filled pregame ceremony, and the Giants will have yet another day of celebrating before Sunday’s game with the World Series ring presentation.

Posey also was honored for his batting title and Silver Slugger award. Kevin Mitchell, the 1989 NL MVP, and 2000 MVP Jeff Kent took part, along with former MVP winners and Hall of Famers Willie Mays and Willie McCovey.

”It was definitely a different pregame for me than normal but it was nice to be able to celebrate that with the fans,” Posey said.

St. Louis’ pitchers faced baserunners every inning but limited the damage.

Miller (1-0) walked Pence with one out in the sixth, then Randy Choate relieved and walked Brandon Belt on four pitches before pinch-hitter Joaquin Arias lined the first pitch he saw into a double play to first baseman Allen Craig.

Miller, the Cardinals’ top pitching prospect, allowed four hits and two runs in 5 1-3 innings. He struck out four and walked four in the first road start of his career.

He went 2-0 with a 3.94 ERA in three spring training starts and five overall appearances, and faced San Francisco twice in relief during last fall’s NLCS.

Miller credited catcher Yadier Molina for his guidance to stick with his off-speed pitches even when he left them up in the zone and the Giants made contact.

”That’s just the lessons I’ll have to work on, trusting my curveball,” he said.

Mitchell Boggs, filling in for injured closer Jason Motte, finished for his first save after blowing his initial chance.

The Cardinals earned their second win of the year, giving their pitchers plenty of offense a day after getting three-hit by Barry Zito and two relievers in a 1-0 loss.

After Jon Jay’s foul popup to start the game, Carpenter reached on an infield single and advanced on a passed ball during Holliday’s strikeout. Carpenter reached third on a wild pitch as Craig batted. Craig, who had two of his team’s three hits Friday, walked and Beltran singled home Carpenter.

The earned run ended a stretch of 26 straight innings without allowing one to begin the year for San Francisco’s starters. Vogelsong needed 28 pitches to get through the inning.

After that, Vogelsong allowed Kozma’s one-out single in the second before retiring the next eight St. Louis batters in order.

World Series MVP Sandoval homered leading off the eighth for his second of the year. Posey followed with a double for his lone hit of the game on a day the first 40,000 fans received his bobblehead doll – just about everybody in the sellout crowd of 41,402.

Sandoval said he is still finding his timing after missing 13 games late in spring training with an inflamed nerve in his right elbow.

”You want me to tell you the truth?” he said. ”A little bit lost.”

Bearcats dominate Southwest Baptist in series opener

riggertNorthwestSixteen runs on 15 hits led to the Northwest Missouri State baseball team taking game one of the three game series from Southwest Baptist 16-3 on Friday.

Northwest did not waste anytime scoring as they plated a run in the top of the first when Brandon Huske stole home to put his team up 1-0.

SBU scored two in the bottom half of the inning to go up 2-1. The Bearcats tied it up in the second inning off the bat of Eric Swain who doubled down the right field line scoring Cam Bedard from second.

The game remained knotted up at 2-2 until the sixth inning when the Bearcats offense began to open up. Swain hit his second double of the game collecting two more RBIs scoring Bedard and Eric McGlauflin to go up 4-2.

Northwest added 12 more runs in the game, eight in the seventh inning and four in the eighth inning to take control of the game. SBU added one in the bottom half of the seventh inning, but that would be it as the Bearcats took game one of the series 16-3.

Royals offense explodes for 13 runs in win over Philadelphia

RoyalsOnce the Kansas City Royals started hitting, they piled it on.

Alex Gordon and Chris Getz each hit a bases-loaded triple and the Royals rallied to beat Philadelphia 13-4 Friday, spoiling the Phillies’ home opener.

The interleague matchup was a rare one between teams that first met in the 1980 World Series – the Royals’ only other visit to Philadelphia came in 2004.

After getting a total of 17 hits in their first three games against the Chicago White Sox, the Royals had 19 against the Phillies. Eric Hosmer was 4 for 5 with three RBIs, and the Royals overcame a 4-0 deficit to surge past Kyle Kendrick and the Phillies.

”We’ve been struggling with the bats,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. ”It was a matter of time until we broke out.”

Breakout is an understatement. The Royals got 17 hits and 13 runs in the last five innings.

”They put us in a hole, but the offense stepped up,” Hosmer said. ”Gordon got the big hit and the offense took a load off our shoulders after that.”

Domonic Brown and Erik Kratz hit solo homers for the Phillies, who are off to a 1-3 start.

Bruce Chen (1-0) struck out two in a perfect fifth in relief of Wade Davis to earn the win. Davis allowed four runs and nine hits in four innings in his first start for Kansas City.

Four Royals relievers combined to toss five hitless innings.

”Our bullpen was fantastic, all of them,” Yost said.

Kendrick (0-1) gave up five runs and eight hits in 5 2-3 innings. He cruised through the first four innings, giving up only two hits.

”It’s disappointing,” Kendrick said. ”They got some hits. I’m not worried at all. It got away from us.”

Hall of Famers Mike Schmidt and George Brett, rivals when the Phillies beat the Royals to win their first championship 33 years ago, threw out the first pitches.

Schmidt was the MVP of the ’80 Series. He capped it off by leaping on pitcher Tug McGraw after the lefty threw strike three past Willie Wilson to clinch Game 6 and set off a wild celebration at old Veterans Stadium.

Looking to return to the postseason after their streak of five straight NL East titles ended last year when they finished 81-81, the Phillies will need better pitching. Cole Hamels and Roy Halladay were roughed up by Atlanta in the first two games, and Kendrick unraveled after four strong innings.

Hosmer hit a two-run single with two outs in the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-2.

The Royals also rallied with two outs in the sixth. Getz hit a double to put runners at second and third. Pinch-hitter Billy Butler was intentionally walked to load the bases. Jeremy Horst replaced Kendrick and Gordon greeted him with a bases-clearing triple to right-center that put the Royals ahead 5-4.

”We knew we didn’t swing the bats great in Chicago,” Gordon said. ”We just kind of moved on. We never lost confidence in our offense. We came in here confident.”

Getz hit his bases-clearing triple off Chad Durbin in the seventh. Brown helped him out with an ill-advised diving attempt on the liner to left. The ball fell in and rolled all the way to the warning track.

Alcides Escobar hit a solo homer off Raul Valdes to make it 10-4 in the eighth.

A sellout crowd of 45,307 at Citizens Bank Park hoped to enjoy a victory on a comfortable, 64-degree late afternoon. The pregame festivities included a mini-parade that led players into the ballpark from the street behind the stands in left-center field.

With their furry green mascot, the Phillie Phanatic, first in line, the players and coaches walked in, mingled with the crowd and high-fived fans lined up along the red carpet in the outfield.

Then the hitters gave them something to cheer at the start.

Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard lined consecutive one-out singles in the first for a 1-0 lead.

Brown hit a towering drive out to right in the second. One out later, Kratz lined one out to left for a 3-0 lead. Kendrick followed with a liner off the wall in left, barely missing his first career homer by about 2 feet.

Kendrick slowly jogged to first, admiring his drive and held up for a long single much to the amusement of Howard and his fellow starting pitchers who pointed and laughed from the dugout.

Utley doubled to left-center in the third, stole third and scored on Howard’s line-drive single to right.

Davis, acquired from Tampa Bay along with James Shields, made his first start since 2011. He made 54 relief appearances for the Rays last year after 58 starts from 2010-11.

St. Louis gets blanked in series opener at San Francisco

CardsBarry Zito warmed up inside as the celebration began without him. When he heard his name, he popped out for a quick look.

Then, back to his routine.

Zito spent all winter relishing in the World Series win – and now, he’s starting anew.

”I’m grateful,” he said. ”It was such a blessing. We’re not taking anything for granted.”

Zito saved San Francisco’s season by beating the Cardinals last fall in the NL championship series, then delivered again with a 1-0 victory over St. Louis on Friday as the Giants celebrated their latest World Series title throughout the home opener.

Zito outdueled Jake Westbrook in his season debut. The lefty also had a key sacrifice bunt that led to San Francisco’s run in the fourth, when Angel Pagan drew a bases-loaded walk.

”It was great for us to come out and match right up with the Cardinals again,” Zito said. ”It felt good to start with one of the best in the league.”

The Giants won their 15th straight game with Zito on the mound, including the postseason. He hasn’t lost since Aug. 2 against the New York Mets.

Facing constant criticism yet again for his girth, World Series MVP Pablo Sandoval made several nice stops at third base and ran down a foul popup to back Zito.

”The difference-maker was the defense,” Zito said. ”Pablo picked me up huge on a handful of plays.”

Zito blanked the Cardinals on three hits through the seventh. San Francisco’s starters have gone 26 innings without allowing an earned run so far.

”Unbelievable,” manager Bruce Bochy said. ”We know that’s amazing and we can’t expect that.”

Jeremy Affeldt pitched a 1-2-3 eighth and Sergio Romo closed out the three-hitter with a clean ninth for his third save.

Zito earned a 5-0 victory in Game 5 of the NLCS at Busch Stadium that sent the series back to San Francisco, where the Giants won two more to reach the World Series. They went on to sweep the Detroit Tigers, with Zito winning the opener.

Zito began the year much like he did in his comeback season of 2012, when he pitched a shutout at Colorado.

The last time the Giants won 14 or more consecutive starts by a pitcher was Carl Hubbell’s 16 straight from July 17 to Sept. 30, 1936, according to STATS.

Fresh off San Francisco’s second title in three years, Bochy carried the World Series trophy out from an entrance in center field as the first Giant announced to the cheering sellout crowd of 41,581.

”I tried to punt it off,” Bochy said. ”I’ve been ball-hogging.”

The orange championship flag arrived by fire boat, with members of the San Francisco Fire Department handing it off to longtime fans to carry the final way through the outfield before several players took turns raising it onto the pole.

”It’s definitely hard not to look around, especially when they’re flying that flag,” Zito said.

After the 45-minute pregame ceremony, it was Zito’s turn. By the time he was done with the 102-pitch gem, he walked off to chants of ”Barry! Barry!”

”Same guy we saw last year,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said.

Zito allowed Jon Jay’s leadoff single, then Carlos Beltran hit a hard grounder that Sandoval stopped to begin a double play – one of two turned by San Francisco.

Zito added a hit, too. He singled down the left-field line in his first at-bat leading off the third.

Zito hopes to build on his 15-8 record last season that was his best since the 2002 AL Cy Young Award winner joined San Francisco on a $126 million, seven-year contract before the 2007 season.

”Keep it going, Barry,” Romo said.

For Matheny, a former Giants catcher himself, San Francisco’s Game 7 clinching party in a downpour here is still plenty fresh.

”We understood the point once the trophy walked out onto the field,” he said. ”It wasn’t anything different when the flag goes up. We don’t need any more motivation than what we already got.”

The two clubs have captured the past three World Series championships – the Giants in 2010 and last year, the Cardinals in ’11.

Westbrook, still two wins shy of 100, matched his career high with six walks and struck out one in 6 2-3 innings. Allen Craig had two of the Cardinals’ hits.

Westbrook walked Gregor Blanco with one out in the fourth and allowed Brandon Crawford’s single before Zito produced another timely bunt. He sacrificed and reached on Yadier Molina’s fielding error to load the bases with one out. Westbrook walked Pagan to force in the run.

Zito had a perfectly executed bunt single to drive in a run during that Game 5 NLCS win.

”That’s an amazing run that he’s had, and really it’s incredible how he’s turned it around from some of the up-and-down years,” Bochy said. ”To get off to a start like this, I couldn’t be prouder of him.”

Brandon Belt returned to the Giants lineup at first base after missing the final two games at Los Angeles with a stomach bug. Bochy went with the exact same lineup as Game 5 of the NLCS against the Cardinals.

On a day when the Queen classic ”We Are the Champions” blared through a near-empty ballpark as pregame warmups began, San Francisco started off a six-game homestand.

It will be a weekend of fanfare for the franchise. On Saturday, the team will honor NL MVP and batting champion Buster Posey before the game with other former San Francisco MVPs, and Sunday will be the ring ceremony.

Sandoval and NLCS MVP Marco Scutaro threw out ceremonial first pitches.

”Tremendous ceremony,” Bochy said. ”Your emotions are just flying. To see the flag come in and how the fans are involved, it’s overwhelming. We all had chills, goose bumps. Some guys had tears.”
