KSU’s Williams earns weekly Big 12 honor

For the fourth-straight week, Kansas State earned a Big 12 Player of the Week accolade as senior defensive end Meshak Williams picked up defensive honors following his performance at TCU, the conference office announced Monday.

Williams had a career night against the Horned Frogs as he helped the K-State defense hold TCU to its lowest point total at home during the Gary Patterson era in a 23-10 win. The Sylvester, Ga., native tallied career highs in both tackles and TFLs with seven and three, respectively, while he carded two sacks. His first sack of the night was for a loss of 18 yards in the third quarter, which eventually set up a short field for the Wildcats to take a 23-0 lead.

Williams is tied for the Big 12 lead with 8.5 sacks this season, a mark that is 17th nationally, while he ranks sixth in the Big 12 with 10.5 tackles for loss. The senior also ranks highly in the K-State record book as he is tied for ninth in school history with 15.5 career sacks and tied for 10th with his 2012 season total. Williams is the anchor of a K-State defense that has 27 sacks in 10 games this season, already the most since the 2007 squad tallied 30.

Sullivan leads Bearcats to season opening win over Graceland

Alex Sullivan hit seven three-pointers and finished with a career high 28 points to help Northwest Missouri State cruise to a 86-65 win over Graceland in non-conference men’s basketball action Sunday afternoon.

Sullivan drained the first points of the game on a three-pointer from the wing, but Graceland answered with back-to-back treys as they would hold onto the lead until the 4:59 mark in the first half. Sullivan’s seven three-pointers were one shy of a school record.

A Dillon Starzl lay-in followed by two Matt Wallace free-throws gave the Bearcats their first lead at 28-27 since Sullivan’s points to open the game. From there the Northwest defense would turn up the intensity forcing 13 turnovers in the game.

Northwest built a double digit lead with 16:19 left in the game as Bryston Williams drained a pull-up jumper at the free-throw line putting the Bearcats up by 10, 53-43.

A 8-3 run by the Bearcats would all but seal the game as a Williams jumper gave Northwest its largest lead at 23 points with 6:55 left in the game. From there Northwest pulled away for a 21-point win.

Four different Bearcats scored in double figures as Williams added 14 points.

Northwest shot 61 percent from the field as a team although the lone struggle for the Bearcats came at the free-throw line. The Bearcats were just 10-of-19 from the line.

Northwest returns to action next weekend at the Hillyard Classic hosted by Missouri Western. The Bearcats open tournament play Friday against Rockhurst before closing out action on Saturday against William Jewell. Tipoff each night is slated for 5:30 p.m.

Griffons rally past Northwest, 21-20, to win MIAA Championship

Missouri Western went up to Maryville, Mo. with one goal in mind: Defeating the Bearcats and taking home the MIAA Championship outright for the first time in program history.

Saturday afternoon, the Griffons came back from 17 down at halftime to defeat rival Northwest Missouri State 21-20 with Travis Partridge’s 2-yard touchdown run with 1:07 left in the game to come out with the victory. Michael Hill’s 10-yard yard not only set up the go-ahead score, but also broke the season record for most rushing yards.

The victory clinches the Griffons’ first ever conference title outright, their second conference title and 10 wins for the first time in a season.

In the first quarter, neither team put points up on the board. After Northwest caused a turnover, the Bearcats jumped out to a 7-0 lead with Tyler Shaw’s 6-yard touchdown reception. The Bearcats continued to carry the momentum throughout the quarter, scoring on a Jordan Simmons 2-yard touchdown and a 22-yard field goal from Todd Adolf to give Northwest a 17-0 lead at the half.

MWSU needed to take advantage of open plays across the middle, and after halftime, that’s what the Griffons did.

After both teams swapped possessions, Missouri Western finally moved down field. Partridge nailed Tyron Crockom across the middle, and Crockom did the rest, running over 10 yards to the right side and into the end zone to give the Griffons their first score of the day.

Northwest threatened the next two possessions, but stalled on a punt and botched a snap on a field goal which gave the Griffons more momentum heading into the fourth quarter, trailing just 17-7.

Still, MWSU couldn’t gain much on offense, and the Bearcats took advantage of a third opportunity to score. Adolf knocked in a 42-yarder by less than two feet against the wind to give Northwest a 20-7 lead with 7:06 to play in the game. That’s when Missouri Western’s magical season dwindled down into a magical quarter.

After the Griffons drove into Bearcat territory by hitting out-patterns to the right side, Partridge went down the middle to senior Tarrell Downing, who hammered his way nearly 30 yards, going right through the Northwest defense which had played well all night. Downing scampered into the end zone to cut the Bearcat lead to one score, 20-14.

Missouri Western’s defense turned up the heat on the next drive, forcing the Bearcats to punt with just more than 3 minutes left on the clock. With the ball and down by six, the Griffons wouldn’t let the Bearcats take the title home with them.

The Griffons traveled past the 50-yard line and continued to go down field, as Partridge hit Brandon Wright on two curl routes and then one to Downing to go into the red zone.

After Hill’s carry brought the Griffons into the 5-yard line, they pulled the Northwest defense to the left, faking a run to Hill and Partridge took the ball into the end zone. Taylor Anderson’s extra point with 1:07 went in to give MWSU a 21-20 lead.

Hill finished with 19 carries for 121 yards. Partridge went 19-for-26 with 207 yards and two scores, with one interception. Partridge also had 10 carries for 25 yards and a score.

Wright finished with four catches for 41 yards. Crockom had four catches as well, with 58 yards and a touchdown.

Wallace Carter had a huge day, helping the Griffons with nine tackles, including two for a loss.

The Griffons await their fate on who they play in next week’s first round game in the playoffs. The Griffons will know tomorrow at 4 p.m. who they play, as they will watch the playoff selection show at Fulkerson Center.

Missouri rallies to defeat Tennessee in 4 OTs

Missouri quarterback James Franklin couldn’t do much of anything for much of Saturday’s game with Tennessee. By the end of the day, he couldn’t be stopped.

Andrew Baggett kicked a 35-yard field goal in the fourth overtime period as Missouri rallied from a two-touchdown halftime deficit to beat Tennessee 51-48. But it was Franklin who sparked the comeback, throwing four touchdown passes – all in the final minute of regulation or overtime.

Franklin’s biggest play came in the final minute of regulation.

Missouri (5-5, 2-5 Southeastern Conference) faced fourth-and-12 when Franklin scrambled around before finding Dorial Green-Beckham all alone in the left corner of the end zone for a game-tying 25-yard touchdown pass with 47 seconds remaining.

“It was pretty funny because right before that, he told me – the defense probably could have seen what he was doing – he put his hand up and he was doing this, this and that,” Franklin said as he motioned how Green-Beckham drew up the route on his hand. “It was funny because that’s what he did, and it worked.”

Tennessee has now lost 13 of its last 14 SEC games over the last two seasons, casting further doubt on the future of Volunteers coach Derek Dooley. With the game tied in the final minute of regulation, Dooley and the Vols (4-6, 0-6) received a chorus of boos when they allowed the clock to run out after failing to gain any yardage on two straight plays.

“I’m hurting because of the game and the kids,” Dooley said. “They played their tail off, man. There’s a lot of negativity, and that comes with the territory. I’m just proud of how they keep going out there and they lay it on the line.”

Each team scored touchdowns on its first two overtime possessions, including a 5-yard run by Tennessee holder Tyler Drummer on a fake field-goal attempt. Both teams reached the end zone again in the third overtime but failed to make their ensuing two-point conversion attempts.

Missouri’s defense finally came through in the fourth overtime when safety Ian Simon broke up Tyler Bray’s fourth-and-3 pass to Zach Rogers from the Missouri 18. Baggett then kicked the field goal that ended this marathon game.

“They were making plays all game,” Missouri defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson said. “We just happened to shut them down when we needed to.”

Franklin threw for 2,865 yards and 21 touchdowns and rushed for 981 yards and 15 more scores last year, but he had struggled with injuries and inconsistency this year while Missouri makes the transition from the Big 12 to the SEC. Franklin was coming off a four-interception performance in a 14-7 loss at Florida last week, and he wasn’t much better in the early part of this game.

After going 2-of-8 for 18 yards and an interception in the first half, Franklin ended up throwing for 226 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing for 43 yards.

“It feels better, especially as a team because on both sides of the ball guys made plays,” Franklin said. “I think it feels more like a team win today.”

Kendial Lawrence added two touchdown runs and 153 rushing yards for Missouri (5-5, 2-5 SEC). Bray threw for 404 yards and four touchdowns for Tennessee (4-6, 0-6), while Mychal Rivera compiled a career-high 10 receptions for 129 yards and a touchdown. Missouri and Tennessee had entered the day tied for the NCAA lead with 10 all-time overtime victories each.

“It stings a lot,” Rivera said. “We really worked hard this week. We really wanted to win this game. Things just didn’t go our way.”

Tennessee entered the day having allowed the most points (35.4) and yards (483.1) per game of any team in the SEC. They were coming off a 55-48 victory over Troy in which they allowed 721 yards, the highest single-game total ever by a Tennessee opponent.

Dooley responded by taking a more active role in the defense. He promised major changes, which included having defensive coordinator Sal Sunseri work from the press box for the first time all season.

For one half anyway, the moves paid off better than anyone could have reasonably anticipated.

The Vols outgained Missouri 383-64 in the first half and took a 21-7 lead into the intermission. Missouri’s offense didn’t cross midfield until about 2 ½ minutes remained in the second quarter. The Tigers’ lone first-half score came on Jimmie Hunt’s 87-yard kickoff return.

Then came the second half.

On the first play from scrimmage in the second half, Lawrence delivered a 77-yard touchdown run that cut Tennessee’s lead to 21-14. After Tennessee extended its lead to 28-14, Lawrence added a 1-yard touchdown run later in the third quarter on a drive kept alive by a fourth-and-1 conversion.

“When Kendial made that run, it kind of sparked everyone,” Franklin said. “We realized we still had a chance.”

Missouri finally tied the game in the final minute when Franklin found Green-Beckham all alone in the left corner of the end zone. Earlier in the drive, Franklin had thrown a 17-yard completion to Marcus Lucas on fourth-and-9 from the Tennessee 40.

“Once we got out there and lined up, I saw how far the safety was playing up so I was (thinking) I can beat this guy and get behind him on a fade route,” Green-Beckham said.

Franklin would pretty much get his way the rest of the day.
