Governor Eric Greitens has ordered that the U.S. and Missouri flags at state buildings in all 114 counties be flown at half-staff on Monday, March 12th, in honor of Clinton Police Officer Christopher Ryan Morton.

Officer Morton, age 30, was shot and killed and two others officers were wounded after they were sent to the wrong house following a 911 call on March 6.

According to a press release, Governor Greitens has also ordered that the U.S. and Missouri flags at all state buildings in Henry County be flown at half-staff from March 13 to March 16.

Governor Greitens will speak at Officer Morton’s funeral service Monday.

HENRY COUNTY —Residents held a Candlelight Vigil Sunday at the Henry County Courthouse grounds in Clinton, Missouri to honor officer Christopher Ryan Morton.

Morton was shot and killed and two others officers were wounded after they had been sent to the wrong house following a 911 call on March 6.

The three Clinton officers went inside the home to determine if criminal activity was occurring and James Waters was in the residence and shot them, according to police. It’s not clear if Waters, 37, was living there.

The funeral for Officer Morton will be 11 a.m., Monday, March 12, Benson Center, Clinton, Mo.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – A man suspected in an Omaha slaying has returned from Missouri.

Douglas County Jail records showed Monday that 21-year-old Taliaferro Thompson entered the jail Friday, facing first-degree murder and other charges. Jail and court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could comment for him.

Police said Thursday that he’d been found in Kansas City. He’s suspected in the slaying of 23-year-old Ashlyn Higgins in January last year. A man, Parris Stamps, was injured in the same shooting.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) – Police in Kansas City, Kansas, are investigating after a man was found dead with a gunshot wound inside a crashed SUV.

The Kansas City Star reports that the body of a man in his 30s was discovered Sunday afternoon inside a Chevrolet Suburban that had crashed into a tree near an apartment complex.

Police don’t know what led to the shooting, but Chief Terry Zeigler said on Twitter that police do not believe it was a random act of violence.

The name of the victim has not been released.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas bill that would make it a crime for people recently convicted of a misdemeanor domestic violence offense to have a firearm has stalled in the state Senate.

The bill unanimously passed the House last month but has stalled after the Senate’s Federal and State Affairs Committee amended language regarding silencers and throwing stars, The Kansas City Star reported .

“Everybody wants the foundation bill, but I don’t want any more amendments on it,” said Senate Majority Leader Jim Denning, R-Overland Park.

The Senate version only makes possessing a throwing star a crime if it’s intended to be used unlawfully against another person. It also makes it legal for Kansas residents to own a silencer under certain stipulations.

“The underlying bill is good,” said Sen. Ty Masterson, R-Andover, who made the throwing star amendment. “This just solves another problem all in the same time. So, if you’re saying solving more problems is better, yes, it’s better.”

Jo Ella Hoye, a leader with the Kansas chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, said she still supports the bill, despite the amendments.

“Women and families across Kansas will be safer the day this bill takes effect,” she said in an email.

The bill would also ban fugitives, those in the country illegally and people subject to certain protection orders from having a gun.

State law currently prohibits people convicted of felony domestic violence from owning a gun.

The legislation comes amid continued debate over guns following the mass shooting at a Florida high school last month.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – Missouri’s Department of Social Services director still is being overpaid despite his promises to stop the practice.

The Jefferson City News Tribune reported this past week that Director Steve Corsi again received a second salary payment from a different state agency. He came under scrutiny last month for taking roughly $128,000 salary a year from the department he leads, along with close to $13,800 from the Department of Health and Senior Services.

Health department checks bump his salary up to $142,000 a year.

Corsi had said he wouldn’t accept the higher pay. But records show he received another check from the health department since then.

Corsi says he noticed the payment Wednesday. He says he won’t take the extra pay, which he said will be subtracted from his next paycheck.
