Two teens allegedly involved in stolen vehicle crash

sjpdThe St. Joseph Police Department is investigating after a car crash involving a stolen vehicle Monday morning in the area of 22nd St. and Pear.

Capt. Jeff Wilson said they believe two juveniles were involved in the incident that took place around 1:40 a.m.  One was injured and taken the the hospital.  Wilson said the teen injured sustained two broken legs. He said the other teen was at large after the crash.

“However, we apprehended a subject on another accident this morning around 10:30,” Wilson said. “This subject may be involved in the earlier but can’t confirm.”

Results after sobriety checkpoint on Faraon Street

Police St. JosephThe St. Joseph Police Department in conjunction with the Northwest Missouri DWI Task Force conducted a sobriety checkpoint in the 3200 block of Faraon Street on August 5th.  

According to a news release, during the five hours of the operation, 263 vehicles were checked.  There were three arrests for driving while intoxicated, three for drug violations, two for warrants, and six for driver’s license violations.

Betty June Jeschke
1925-2016

unnamed (73)TROY, KANSAS – Betty June Jeschke passed away Thursday, August 4, 2016 at the Living Community of St. Joseph, Missouri at the age of 90, after battling a long illness.
She was born in St. Joseph on October 7, 1925 to Robert and Verna Edna Agee. She graduated from Benton High School and attended the Gard Business School, both in St. Joseph, Missouri. She married Emil L. Jeschke on April 12, 1951 in St. Joseph at the Seventeenth Street Community of Christ Church. She and Emil spent their life engaged in farming near Troy, KS.
Betty worked for Community of Christ as Office Secretary until her marriage. After her marriage and move to Troy, Kansas, she worked as Deputy Treasurer of Doniphan County for several years, then as secretary for the Kansas Extension Service until retiring. She very much enjoyed working and making friends with the 4-H Clubs. She also enjoyed traveling with family and seeing new places. Betty had an unwavering kind, loving, and generous spirit. The loves of her life were her husband, daughters, and granddaughters.
Preceding her in death were her husband and parents.
Surviving her are two daughters, Barbara Ann (Jesse) Wilson of Port Angeles, Washington and Elizabeth Kay (Jim) Cole of Troy, Kansas. Granddaughters, Andrea Jean Cole of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Ashley Jane Cole of Troy, Kansas. Also surviving is a sister Eva Marie Dugan of St. Joseph, Missouri, and a brother Robert E. (Dorothy) Agee of Gower, Missouri. Many nieces and nephews, survive as well.
The family will meet with friends at the Fanning Community of Christ Church from 6:00 P.M to 8:00 P.M on Wednesday evening. A celebration of Betty’s life is planned for 10:30 A.M. Thursday, August 11, 2016, at the Fanning Church with Donald Harter and Mark Twombly officiating. Friends may call after 9 A.M. Tuesday at the Harman-Rohde Funeral Home in Troy, Kansas.

Harold L. Cameron
1920-2016

Cameron, Harold. obitphotoHarold L. Cameron, 96, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Thursday, August 4, 2016, at a local healthcare facility.
He was born July 3, 1920 in Pattonsburg, Missouri.

Harold married Mary Imogene Stitt on August 10, 1948.
He graduated from Pattonsburg High School Class of 1938 and proudly served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. Harold was a farmer in Pattonsburg then moved to St. Joseph in 1975 and worked at the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier until he retired.
Mr. Cameron was a member of Clair United Methodist Church and enjoyed writing poetry, some of which have been published. He was known as a very kind and generous person with a strong faith in God.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Cora (Horton) Cameron; daughter, Margie Cameron-Jarrett; and two brothers, Joe and Ermal Cameron.
Survivors include wife of nearly 68 years, Imogene; daughter, Bonnie McFall (Allen), Dearborn, Missouri; five grandchildren, Camille Hendren (Jason McKee), Scotti Williamson (Clay), Evan McFall, Nicholas Jarrett (Lindsey) and Cora Jarrett Leahy (Edward); four great-grandchildren, Cadi, Britt and Brodie Williamson and Eva Jarrett; son-in-law, Gary Jarrett; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was born August 14, 1944 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of Beatrice and Leo Scott. She worked at Townsend & Wall as a receiving clerk. She loved her grandson, going to church, and playing bingo. She was a member of Wyatt Park Christian Church . Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Linda J. Scott. Survivors include, her daughter, Brenda Pemberton of Saint Joseph, MO, grandson, Garrett Pemberton, two brothers; Gary Scott of Phoenix, AZ, and William Scott of Kansas City, MO, and a sister, Connie Beahler of Liberty, MO.
Funeral services will be at 3:00 PM Saturday, August 6, 2016 at the Rupp Funeral Home with Dr. Scott Killgore officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Saturday at the Rupp Funeral Home. The Inurnment will be at the Taos Cemetery at a later date. He was born March 20, 1941 in Fromberg, MT, son of Esperanza “Hope” and Jesse Chavez, Sr. He graduated from Christian Brothers High School in 1960. He married Lois Bertelsen on February 14, 1988. He worked at Wire Rope Corp. He loved his faith, his family and his grandchildren. He was very hardworking, and he was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church. Jesse was preceded in death by his father, step-father, Gus Martinez, and brother, John Chavez. Survivors include wife, Lois Ilene Chavez of Saint Joseph, MO, mother, Esperanza “Hope” Chavez Martinez of St. Joseph, MO, three daughters, Sherri (Billy) Jackson of Hemple, MO, Jennifer (Kevin) Yardley and Julia Chavez all of Grain Valley, MO, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, three brothers, Daniel (Pam) Chavez of Gardner, KS, Larry (Linda) Chavez of Kansas City, KS, and Thomas (Marolyn) Chavez of St. Joseph, MO, five sisters, Dolores (Walt) Meyers of Kansas City, MO, Margaret Ann (Ladd) Imm of Smithville, MO, Ramona (Bill) Atkinson of St. Joseph, MO, Mary (Steve) Merritt of Amazonia, MO, and Frances (Craig) Wahlert of St. Joseph, MO, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She enjoyed her grandchildren, crossword puzzles, sewing, and being with her family. She is survived by son, Charles Simpson of Yellville, AR, father, Clarence Trant, mother, Katherine Proctor, daughter, Amy Larabee of St. Joseph, MO, 3 brothers, Rick (Mary) Trant, Bill (Kay) Trant, Steve (Lisa) Trant all of North Carolina, a sister, Kathy (Jerry) Swope of OR, grandchildren, Reanna Simpson, Cole Larabee, Cheyenne Simpson, Aliyah Larabee, Bishop Simpson, Derick Larabee, and Shylo Larabee. She was born May 5, 1940 to James and Gladys (Hull) Goodding in Kansas City, Missouri.
Ms. Goodding earned her Bachelor’s Degree of Library Science. After graduating she worked as a Librarian at the St. Joseph State Hospital for 28 years while also working at Shanin’s Pharmacy for 30 years. Later she worked as the Executive Director of Community Recreation and Resocialization, CRR, which is a non-profit organization for Mentally Handicapped adults.
Martha loved her dogs and enjoyed bingo, going to the casino and being at their house at Big Lake. She loved being with her family especially at their weekly family dinners at her home. She was of the Episcopalian Faith.
She was preceded in death seven months ago on January 24, 2016 by her life partner of 50 years, Sandy “Moo Moo” Dykes. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Ken, William “Wig”, and Jim Goodding.
Survivors include her son, Scott Dykes; daughter, Susan Gaudreau (Stephen); three grandchildren, Melissa Hawley (Tony Dominguez), Alexandra Collins (Brandon) and Tabatha Auxier (Eliott Morris); seven great grandchildren, Dominic, Jordan, Sammi, Myley, Dallas, Hunter and Corey; nieces and nephews, Judy, David, MaryKaye, Doug, Patty and Cheryl; numerous great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews; Greg Organ (Regina), whom she thought of as a son; Kathy Forister, whom she thought of as a daughter; and her extended CRR family.

Stuff the Bus sets new record

Stuff the BusThis year’s Stuff the Bus campaign reached a new high, with community members donating more than 29-thousand school supply items to the needy.

United Way parked school buses in the parking lots at both St. Joseph WalMart locations to collect donations of school supplies for needy families. In a news release, the group said it collected 29,360 items, and nearly $1,300 to buy supplies that were not donated.

Last year, community members donated 23,234 items, and since the program began in 2009 they have collected and distributed more than 160,000 items. The collected items will be distributed through partner agencies and programs including the Salvation Army “Back to School Fair.”

Families in need of assistance are urged to call The Salvation Army at (816)232-5824.

Two hurt in Holt County motorcycle crash

Two people were hurt, one of them seriously, in a motorcycle crash on I-29 near Mound City Friday night.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the pair were riding along I-29 shortly before 11pm Friday when an object fell from a trailer in front of them. The vehicle towing the trailer did not stop.

The Harley Davidson hit the object and overturned. Samuel Little, 69, of Lenexa and Constance Harrell, 65, of Shawnee, Kansas, were ejected.

Both were transported to Mosaic Life Care for treatment and then released.

Planned Road Work for Northwest Missouri, Aug. 8 – 14

Road Closed - FeatureST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The following is a listing of general highway maintenance and construction work in the Northwest Missouri region planned for the week of Aug. 8 – 14 from the Missouri Department of Transportation In addition to the work listed below, there may be pothole patching, bridge deck washing, striping, brush cutting, guardrail repairs and other road work conducted throughout the region. Many of these will be moving operations and could include lane closures with delays.

 

Andrew County

  • Route 48 – CLOSED at the Platte River Bridge near Whitesville for a bridge replacement project. The road will be closed through mid-November.
  • Route M – Pothole patching, Aug. 8 – 9
  • Interstate 29 – NIGHT WORK southbound from Business U.S. Route 71 to 1.5 miles south of Route O (Buchanan County) for guardrail work, Aug. 8 – 12, 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly. This includes a 15-foot width restriction.

Buchanan County

  • I-35 – One lane may be closed under the U.S. Route 36 overpass for a bridge deck replacement project. Intersection work to close Mitchell Ave. at the Belt this week

belt and mitchell2Mitchell Avenue at the Belt intersection in St. Joseph will close to traffic starting Monday.

Contractors from Mega Industries Corporation, working with the Missouri Department of Transportation, will remove the old pavement at the intersection and lay new pavement Monday through Thursday and August 15-18.

Route YY (Mitchell Avenue) at U.S. Route 169 (Belt Highway) will be closed around-the-clock and traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction on the Belt.

The first closure will begin at approximately 7 a.m. on Monday. Contractors plan to reopen access across the Belt Highway at Mitchell by 5 p.m. Thursday, August 11. They will close the road again on Monday, August 15 through Thursday, August 18, during the same hours.

During the closure, all business entrances on Mitchell Avenue will be accessible, traffic will only be restricted from crossing or accessing the Belt Highway from Mitchell Avenue. Motorists traveling north and south on the Belt Highway may notice delays and will not be able to turn onto Mitchell Avenue from the Belt Highway.

36 highway bridge replacement beginning in Cameron

MoDOT LogoCAMERON, Mo – Starting Monday bridge construction will begin at the U.S. Route 36 and Interstate 35 interchange, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation. Traffic will be head to head as contractors from Emery Sapp and Sons, Inc. replace the eastbound bridge deck. After the eastbound bridge is complete, traffic will crossover to the new bridge while the westbound bridge is replaced.

The medians between the eastbound and westbound bridges will be closed during construction, preventing all left turns in all four directions at the interchange. Traffic will be rerouted through Cameron until construction is complete and left turns resume. There is also a 14-foot width restriction placed on the project.

Hours of operation will be 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and occasional weekend work in case of bad weather. Crews anticipate project completion by December 15, 2016, weather permitting. Motorists should expect lane closures and possible delays for the duration of the project.

Northwest to host night-time golf tournament to benefit foundation

golf-ball-946439_640MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Wesley Student Center at Northwest Missouri State University will host its 14th Annual Shot in the Dark Golf Tournament to benefit the Wesley Foundation Friday, Aug. 12.

The tournament at Mozingo Lake Golf Course tees off with a shotgun start at 6 p.m. The first nine holes are a two-person scramble; the second nine holes are a two-person alternate “shot in the dark.” The tournament also will feature a $10,000 hole-in-one prize and a 50/50 putting challenge.

Registration and a light dinner are 5 to 5:45 p.m. A dessert buffet is available after the first nine holes of golf.

Entry fee is $75 per player, which includes green fees, a cart, food, prizes and a glow-in-the-dark golf ball for each team.

The deadline to register is Thursday, Aug. 11. Registration is limited to 36 teams and available online by visiting www.northwestwesley.com and clicking “charity golf tournament” on the top menu.
