Voters approve school district capital funding ballot issues

Winston R-VI school rendering
Winston R-VI school rendering

School districts in our region will get new facilities thank to voters in Tuesday’s election.

Voters in the Winston R-VI school district barely approved funding for a new school to replace their current building, which is nearly a century old.  The vote was 185-to-180.

The levy will increase $1.24 per $100 of assessed valuation.  School district officials moved forward with the ballot question after a Winston Community Capital Projects Improvement Committee assessed the need.  The committee cited a community-wide survey, in which respondents noted a strong desire to make capital improvements for the long term.

Among the improvements to be included in the new school will be secured entrances.  Visitors will be required to check in at the office through secured doors.  The facility will be handicapped accessible, and will include new energy efficient windows, heating, air conditioning.  The facility will house students from pre-school through 12th grade, so preschoolers will no longer be required to walk across the school parking lot several times a day.

In the Chillicothe R-II school district, voters gave a green light to a new $14.55 million levy increase to pay for a number of school projects, including a new school for students in preschool through first grade.  The ballot question passed by a 63% to 37% margin according to unofficial election results.

In Nodaway County, voters gave the go-ahead for a second gym at the Jefferson C-123 school.  It was the 7th time the issue has been put forward to voters.  This time they said yes to the $1.5 million general obligation bond issue by the needed 4/7 super majority.  The final vote tally was 216 to 153 according to unofficial results from the Nodaway County Clerk’s Office.

School district officials will keep the old gym at the school in Conception Junction to keep options open for athletic events and school plays. Officials hope to finish construction of the new facility in about ten months, but do not anticipate opening it until after the end of the 2016-2017 school year.

Fire ravages Princeton Square

Five firefighting agencies responded to a fire in the Princeton, Missouri town square Tuesday.

The blaze destroyed at least two buildings and forced election officials to move one the city’s polling places for Tuesday’s election. There was a water main break on the Princeton Square, but water service was left on to fight the fire.

The fire destroyed the buildings housing Jeff’s Place bar, the Mercer County Senior Center and A Better Image Salon Spa & Fitness.

The fire smoldered overnight, as firefighters kept watch.   There has been not determination of the cause of the fire.  There were no reports of injuries.

Mike O’Connell of the Missouri Department of Public Safety offered up more details.

The fire started at roughly 1:27 p.m. affecting a large section of businesses on the east side of the Princeton square. O’Connell says it was first noticed inside the building at 102 North Broadway Avenue on the east side of the square occupied by “Jeff’s Place”, which is a bar.

The fire consumed the business along with the majority of the Mercer County Senior Center which is located at 110 North Broadway Avenue. A business to the south of Jeff’s Place known as A Better Image Salon, Spa and Fitness sustained heavy fire and smoke damage.

When the Division of Fire Safety Investigator left the scene, a business to the north of 110 North Broadway and a second business to the southeast of 100 North Broadway were inside the collapse zone and were in danger of structural damage.  He was expected to examine both those businesses on Wednesday.

UPDATE: Voter turnout only 8.8% in early readings

vote-here-id-requiredBuchanan County voter turnout for Tuesday’s municipal election looks like it will fall way short of predicted turnout numbers.

As of 3 p.m. voter turnout was only at 8.8%.  According to the county clerk’s office that percentage means only 4,293 ballots have been cast out of the 48,869 registered voters.

Clerk Mary Baack-Garvey said it does not look like turnout will meet her 25% prediction.  As we previously reported, Baack-Garvey said the average April General Municipal turnout has been around 18.25% over the last five years.

The only issue for St. Joseph residents to vote on is who will fill the two open spots on the St. Joseph School District Board of Education. Baack-Garvey said past turmoil in the St. Joseph School District makes it difficult to predict voter turn-out but was anticipating a higher turnout because of the issue.

Mid-Buchanan and DeKalb also have a measure on the ballot for school boards.

Polls are open until 7 p.m.

Habiger/West breaks ground on new McDonald’s on the North Belt

At 6,500 square feet, St Joseph will soon boast one of the biggest McDonald’s franchises in the four-state area. And with interactive kiosks for ordering, a wait staff to deliver your meal to your table, and expanded play options for the kids, you may not recognize it.

Chris Habiger of Habiger/West joined Chamber of Commerce Diplomats, city and county leaders to break ground on the new facility.

Mayor Bill Faulkner says the new restaurant will have a big impact on St. Joseph in general and the North Belt in particular.

“Well I think we’re going to have one of the biggest McDonald’s in the four-state area, and so, I think anytime St. Joseph can be the leader in anything I think that’s good for the community,” Faulkner said. “And, with all the other construction that’s been going on up in this area, it makes it look attractive.”

“It’s happening up here.”

Mr Habiger tells us they hope to open the new restaurant at 3504 N. Belt on July 1, weather permitting.

“We’re going to be hiring 85 new members of our team,” he said. “In fact, if you go to jobs.stjoemcd.com we’ve already begun that process. We’re looking to have three or four advertised hiring events between now and our target grand opening of July 1st.”

“One of the big questions I’ve been asked since we tore this building down is ‘are we going to have a Play Place?’ Well the answer is yes,” Habiger said. “We will, with lots of different elements.

“The other thing is we’re going to have a private party room. So, whether it’s a birthday party or an after-church social, it could be the place to have a great event at McDonald’s.”
