W. Jean Smith
1936-2015

Wilma Jean (Stenzel) Maag Smith, 79, passed away Friday, June 19, 2015. She was born March 6, 1936 in Hamburg, Iowa to Walter J. and Marjorie M. (Hiatt) Stenzel. Jean grew up on a farm in Nemaha County Nebraska; attended the McKissick Island School there, and graduated in 1954 from Hamburg High School, Hamburg, Iowa. She attended St. Josephs Nursing School, St. Joseph, Missouri.
Jean married the love of her life Harold E. Maag in 1956. They became the parents of five children. Harold passed away in 1981. Jean married J.O. Smith in 1984 and they shared 17 years until his passing in 2001. Jean married John Schildknecht in 2004 and he survives of the home.
Her parents and her sister, Doris J. Sowers, precede Jean in death.
Jean enjoyed being a mother and grandmother, living in the country, sewing, quilting, reading, playing the organ, and singing. She became interested in history and genealogy in 1990. She was a member and volunteer in the genealogy department of the Andrew County Museum for many years. She enjoyed helping numerous people doing their own research. Jean was a member of John Griffith Chapter of DAR and served as registrar.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Mary (Sam) VanHorn, Connie Maag, Susan (Mark) Schneider, John (Barb) Maag, and Jim (Kari) Maag; grandchildren, Marne (Jimmy) Schafersman, Micah Van Horn, Kim (Steve) Warden, Dustin (Misty) Schneider, Travis (Rachael) Schneider, Jacob Schneider and fiancé Michelle Vey, Sierra Maag, Shaina Maag, Lindsey (Koty) Davis, Kasey Maag, and Trevor Maag; great-grandchildren, Zack, Gage, Allie, Jackson, Ruby, Landon, and Macy.

Kenneth Ken W. Boyd, 88, Clinton, Missouri passed away Friday, June 19, 2015 in St. Joseph.
He was born March 11, 1927 in St. Joseph, Missouri.
He was a graduate of Benton High School, class of 1945.
Mr. Boyd proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and was a member of VFW Post 1894 in Clinton, Missouri.
Ken married Carmen Swank in 1951. She preceded him in death in 1983.
He worked in the feed and grain industry prior to moving to Clinton, Missouri where he and his wife owned Valley Hardware.
Ken had a passion for golf and also enjoyed reading.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, Alberta and W.Joseph Boyd of St. Joseph.
Survivors include his daughter, Karen Ann Schwab (Thomas D.) of San Antonio, Texas; granddaughter, Tawnya Henderson (Scott) and great-granddaughter, Riley Grace of San Antonio; granddaughter, Laura Schwab Wintters (Brandon) and great-granddaughters, Addison Faith and Allyssa Joy of San Antonio; granddaughter, Sarah Schwab (Travis Jowell) of Houston; sister, Betty Jo Thomas of St. Joseph and a niece and nephew and their families.

He was born September 19, 1949 in Omaha, Nebraska to George and Mary (Williams) Russell.
George married Vickie Lynn Patterson May 23, 1975.
He was a cook in the United States Army for over 20 years.
He loved fishing, camping, hunting, collecting swords and knives, and enjoyed playing with his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and son-in-law, Michael Hayden.
Survivors include wife; son, Dustin Russell; daughter, Kelly Hayden; and grandchildren, James, Ryan, Gabriel, and Victoria Russell, and Austin, Joseph, Chase, Olivia, Wyatt, and Cole Kline.

Lisa M. (Cobb) Bechtold
1970-2015

Lisa M. (Cobb) Bechtold, 45, Rea, MO; passed away unexpectedly Sunday, June 21, 2015 at Mosaic Life Care.
Lisa was born May 21, 1970 in Iowa City, Iowa to Robert and Sandra Cobb. She was a graduate of Savannah High School.
Lisa was employed as a housekeeper at Drury Inn in St. Joseph. She was a member of the Baptist faith, and enjoyed attending auctions and riding on her Harley Davidson. Above all she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Lisa married Bill Bechtold on April 20, 2009 in St. Joseph. He survives of the home.
Additional survivors include her daughter, Haylee Ball (Cody), Richmond, MO; step-daughter, Tiffany Gazarek (Joe) Savannah, MO., step-son, Matthew Bechtold (Dana), Savannah, MO; seven grandchildren, Brody , Ryder, Chloe, Tanner, Kaden, Keegan and Kale; siblings, Tom and Sharon Walton, St. Joseph, MO; Bill and Shawnee Walton, Forest City, MO; Cheryl and Kim Keith, St. Joseph, MO; Sandy and Jack Hare, Topeka, KS; Bill and Cathy Cobb, Belton, MO; Terry and Rhonda Cobb, Ponka City, OK; Tracy Cobb, IA; Wayne and Sharron, Belton, MO; Debbie and Bill Allender, Maryville, OK and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Bechtold was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Mike Cobb.Services 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel where the family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service. Interment Savannah Cemetery.

Ruth Anna Foster
1924 – 2015

Ruth Anna Foster 90, St. Joseph, MO passed from this life on Friday, June 19, 2015 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. She was born in St. Joseph, MO to A. Clyde & Lucille G. (Spencer) Ingram on September 28, 1924.
Ruth enjoyed reading, helping and caring for people. She was a member of Hillyards first LPN Class and practiced and volunteered her vocation for the remainder of her life. She donated her time in doing regular blood pressure monitoring at the Joyce Ray Patterson Senior Center in St. Joseph.
She is survived by two sons; Charles Wesley (Linda) Brown, Dr. Roger (Cindy) Brown; two daughters, Barbara (Lloyd) Budine, and Marsha (Dr. Robert Allen) Brown, plus close family member John (Dee) Carter; one sister, Catherine Laurence; ten grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren with numerous step-children, step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three husbands, Charles Alfred Brown, William Harvey, and Robert Foster, and one sister Gretchen Smiley
Ruth gave a generous donation of her body to KU Med Center for medical research. No services are planned.

 

Patsy Ruth Williams
1934-2015

Patsy Ruth Williams, 81, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at her residence.
She was born February 21, 1934 to Henry and Violet McDowell in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Patsy married Donald Lee Williams, Sr. on January 13, 1950 who preceded her in death March 26, 2015.
She enjoyed playing Bingo and collected Elvis memorabilia. She was a tough, straight forward lady who was not afraid of anything.
Patsy was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Vicky Lynn Vardoulous; sisters, Audrey Lea, Sharon Kay; brothers, Donald Gene and Allen Dale.
Survivors include children, Patsy Moss, St. Joseph, Missouri, Teresa Owens (Larry), St. Joseph, Missouri, Penney Brinton (Chuck), St. Joseph, Missouri, D. L. Williams, Jr., Independence, Missouri and Tim Williams (Kelly), St. Joseph, Missouri; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Larry Dean McDowell (Fran).

Larry Ray Pittman, 70, Savannah, Missouri passed from this life on Wednesday, June 17 2015 at his home in Savannah. He was born September 25, 1944 in Rosendale, Missouri to Sherman and Marie (Adams) Pittman. Larry married Diana Neece on February 1, 1985 in Kansas City, Missouri.  He liked old cars, tractors and anything he could get dirty doing. Larry was a superintendent for E.L. Crawford Construction Company retiring in 2008.  He was a member of the Carpenters Local 110 in St. Joseph.Survivors include his wife Diana of the home; sons, Troy (Angie) Pittman, Savannah, Missouri, Doug (Sarah) Cerra, Troy, Kansas; daughter, Lynne Pittman, Savannah; brother, Garry (Judy) Pittman, Rosendale, Missouri; sisters, Mary Atkins, St. Joseph, Missouri, Shirley (Phillip) Standlea, Raymore, Missouri, Helen Hardister, St. Joseph, and Gloria (Dean) Hurlbut, Country Club, Missouri; four grandchildren, Kirk Pittman, Kinsley (Ben) Pister, Amaris DeLong, Curran DeLong, Tara (Alex) Batty, and Ryan (Rachel) James; four great-grandchildren, Liam, Ilef, Hadassah, Rhema, and Amana. Benjamin Joseph Buczek Jr. 73, of DeKalb, Missouri passed away Tuesday June 16, 2015 at Mosaic Life Care. He was born July 23, 1941 in St. Joseph, Missouri son of Garnet & Benjamin Buczek Sr. He married Margaret “Peggy” Danback on April 2, 1960, and they shared 55 years together. He graduated from Christian Brothers high school 1959, was a Truck Driver for several of the local lines. He enjoyed spending time with his sons and was proud of his grandkids, he also enjoyed hunting and fishing in his earlier years. Benjamin was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Christopher Buczek, and brother, David Buczek. She was born October 7, 1928 to Charles and Jennie Conley in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Velma married Charles Thomas Woolard September 4, 1948 who preceded her in death on April 25, 2003.
Mrs. Woolard was a dietary aid at Methodist Medical Center, a member of the Buchanan County Extension Club, and a member of Woodson Chapel Church since 1955.
She enjoyed working in her garden and being outside.
Velma was preceded in death by her husband; son, Gary Woolard; parents; grandsons, Nicholas and Brandon Woolard; sister, Joanne Conley.

He married Michelle Grier February 14, 2005 and she survives of the home. He enjoyed fishing and writing poems but most especially he loved to spend time with his family and was a Royals fan and a Christian. Jackie “Jack” L. Schuman 70, St. Joseph, MO passed from this life on Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at Diversicare of St. Joseph. He was born in St. Joseph, MO to Charles Schuman and Arlena June (Cobb) Weir on September 2, 1944.
Jack served in the US Navy from 1961 to 1965.
He is survived by son, Jeffery Schuman; daughter, Kelly Angus, both of Des Moines, IA; sisters, Cindy Scott, St. Joseph, MO, and Pamela Gilliland, Atchison, KS; and four grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his father, mother, stepfather, Cecil Weir; and brother Ronald Schuman.

Juanita Mae Barber, 82, of St. Joseph, passed away Sunday, June 14, 2015 at a local hospital.Juanita was born January 14, 1933 to Glenn and Viola (Russell) Valentine in St. Joseph, where she lived her entire life. She was a 1950 graduate of Benton High School. On November 27, 1954 she married Colonel Barber who she shared over fifty years of marriage with before his passing March 1, 2006. In 1992 she retired from Nodaway Valley Bank, where she worked as a bookkeeper. She was a member of former Hyde Valley United Methodist Church. She also was a member of CAJ and the Railroad Old Timers Club. She enjoyed traveling and especially enjoyed her time with family and friends.Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband, Colonel; a brother, Howard Valentine; and nephew Michael Valentine.Survivors include two children, Jackie Barber of Victorville, California and Lisa Barber of St. Joseph; three grandchildren, Jeremy Barber and his wife Stacy, of Anchorage, Alaska, Megan Venegas of El Paso, Texas, and Gary Barber, of Victorville, California; one great-grandson, Vance Venegas; two nephews, James and Paul Valentine and several great-nieces and great-nephews.Ms. Barber has been cremated under the care of Clark-Sampson Funeral Home.A gathering of family and friends will be from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, June 20 at Clark-Sampson Funeral Home. She attended Benton high school, and was a beauty operator and had her own shop, she also worked at Cub Foods & Phoenix Scientific. She loved her family and grandchildren, and enjoyed bingo, lottery and casino games. She was a member of Lake Avenue Baptist Church. Connie was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Billy Joe Tyler, a brother, Reggie DeLong, and a sister, Margaret Stanford. Mary was preceded in death by her husband Frank, parents, daughter in law, Maxine Wawrzyniak, five brothers: Charlie, John, Henry “Buck”, Jake, and Jess “Jinks” Wawrzyniak, five sisters, Emma McGuire, Nancy Grable, Susan Moser, Nellie Roberts, and Dollied Griffin. John “Jay” Walter Rocha

John “Jay” Walter Rocha 56, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away Monday, June 8, 2015 at his home. He was born October 9, 1958 in St. Joseph, MO, son of Eleise “Lisa” and Juan Rocha. He graduated from Benton high school. He worked at MetroWarehouse in Kansas City, MO. He is now safely home with his heavenly father who he loved dearly. Brenda Sue (Stroud) Shtohryn
1949-2015

Brenda Sue (Stroud) Shtohryn, 66, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Friday, June 5, 2015 at Mosaic Life Care.
She was born March 23, 1949 to Virgil Brick and Frances (Gelvin) Stroud in Craig, Missouri. She was the youngest of five children.
Brenda married Zenon Jim Shtohryn on March 29, 1974, who preceded her in death on May 22, 2011.
She graduated from Nodaway Holt RVII High School in Graham, MO in 1967. After graduation she worked for Rother Grain Elevator in Maitland for many years. She moved to St. Joseph in the early 70s and worked at American Electric for several years until the company down-sized. She was currently employed at American Angus Association in St. Joseph.
Brenda was diagnosed with Leukemia when she was 25 years old and successfully managed the disease for many years. She underwent a stem-cell transplant in 1996. The disease reoccurred in 2014, and she lost a courageous battle as a result of complications from treatment.
was a kind, sweet, and loving person known for her humor, generosity, and artistic spirit. She loved spending time with her family, drinking hot tea, reading, and exploring her creative side. Some of the artistic skill she developed over the years included painting, needle point, stained glass lamp shades, and Ukranian pysanky Easter eggs. At work, she delivered gifts to her co-workers as a secret Santa for years until she was discovered one morning.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Frances Stroud (1951); father, Brick Stroud (1984); and brother, Jim, (2014).
Survivors include sisters, Rena Gard, Maitland; Ray (Linda) Stroud, Shirley (ONeil) Long, Mound City; numerous nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; her beloved pets Zoey and Scooter; and many friends and co-workers.

Robert “Bob” Edward McGuire

Robert “Bob” Edward McGuire 88, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, June 11, 2015 in Cameron, MO. He was born November 4, 1926 in St. Joseph, MO, son of Mary and William H. McGuire. He married Audrey Malson on May 24, 1947 and she survives of the home. He served in the Army and is a veteran of the World War II. He worked at MFA 23 years, Carnation & the Leavenworth Prison. He loved dancing, hunting, fishing, and was a member of Community Christian Church and attended King Hill Baptist Church. He was also a member of the King Hill Masonic Lodge # 376 A.F. & A.M, the Scottish Rite, Moila Shrine Temple, VFW and American Legion. Bob was preceded in death by hias parents, three sisters Ida Pummel, Betty Lou Mackley, and Martha Singleton, three brothers, Eugene, Howard, and Ralph McGuire. Survivors include, wife, Audrey McGuire of the home, a sister, Barbara Funk of St. Joseph, MO, and several, nieces & nephews.

William A. Bill OBanion, Jr., 90, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Monday, June 8, 2015 at his residence.
He was born May 25, 1925 in Gentry, Missouri to William and Minnie (Weese) OBanion, Sr.
He proudly served in the US Navy during WWII and was the owner and operator of Bill & Jims 66 service station. He also built houses and developed residential areas. Bill was a jack of all trades, but enjoyed woodworking and carpentry the most. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maxine OBanion; brother, Roy OBanion; and sisters, Mary Ellen Hensley, Agnes Riddle Dine, and Clara Heaton. Survivors include daughters, Debra OBanion, Becky Mercer (Troy); son, Gregg OBanion; step-daughters, Mary Berry (Wendell) and Sandy Sealey (Bob); brothers, Austin OBanion (Arlene) and Dennis Nolan (Janice); two grandchildren, Corey Bennett and Kendra Bennett; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Ruby Munshaw

Ruby Nellie Webster Munshaw, loving and devoted wife, for 63 years, and a partner in ministry, to the late Reverend Joseph J. Munshaw was born December 6, 1918 in Grand Forks, British Columbia, Canada, and died June 9, 2015 , at 1 o’clock at the Oregon Care Center, Oregon, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her parents Arthur H. Webster and Anna Crystal Webster; two brothers George and Lorne Webster, and a sister Ruth Clark.

Ruby is survived by three sons,who were with her, Dr. Joseph Arthur Munshaw (and wife Coke Hennessy) of Manchester, Missouri, John William Munshaw (and wife Joyce) of Oregon, Missouri, and Robert Wayne Munshaw of Independence, Missouri. She also is survived by eight grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

When she was four years old her family moved from Canada to Central Point, Oregon, where she grew up and graduated valedictorian of her senior class in 1936. In 1943 she became a U.S. citizen.

When she was seven, Ruby was asked to become the pianist for her church. This began a lifetime of music ministry that lasted more than eighty years. She played piano, organ, and autoharp. She directed and accompanied church choir cantatas at the Methodist churches in Guilford, Barnard, Bolckow, Oregon, and Forest City, Missouri. Even when her eyesight and memory were failing, she brought comfort and joy to herself and others playing the piano and organ at the Oregon Care Center, where she resided in the last years of her life.

At her request, her body was cremated. A memorial service celebrating the life of Ruby Munshaw will be held 1:00 PM, Saturday, July 11, 2015 at the Price Funeral Home, Maryville, Missouri. A visitation will occur one hour prior to the service.

Dorothy Ruth Hendricks 1926-2015

The world has lost its brightest light. Dorothy Ruth Hendricks passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, June 6th surrounded by her family from an aggressive brain cancer.
Dorothy Ruth Bremicker was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Jun 19th, 1926. Fondly known as Brem, she was adored by many. She married Colonel James Hendricks and they enjoyed the Air Force life. Dorothy and Jim had two children, Sharon Lea and Michael.
Dorothy was the matriarch of her family. Her charismatic personality and contagious smile will be long remembered, by her friends and family throughout the many places she has lived.
Dorothy was amazing and beautiful in every way; her qualities were nothing short of magical. The essence of who Dorothy was lives in all of us who were lucky enough to know her. She influenced many lives until the day she passed and her wisdom and caring nature are really a part of everyone whose lives she has touched. She will be dearly missed but it is comforting to know that she is safely in heaven with her true love and soul mate.
The family will be holding a private service in Dorothys honor. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dorothy’s memory to the Friends of the Animal Shelter.

Madonna Turgon, 90, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Monday, June 8, 2015 at a local healthcare facility.
She was born July 4, 1924 to Thomas and Cora Driskell in Blanche, Missouri.
Madonna married Chester Emil Turgon in August of 1951, he preceded her in death on October 29, 1992.
She was active in PTA and as a Cub Scout Den mother. Madonna was a member of New Testament Christian Church on Pickett.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; seven brothers and sisters; and infant granddaughter, Cora Lee Wilson.

William John Tunks II, passed away on June 7, 2015 at his home near Fairport, Missouri. He worked for Missouri Methodist Hospital in St. Joseph and H & R Block in Kansas when he retired. John loved to do genealogy research about his ancestors and would willingly help anyone else interested in researching their family history.He was a gentle, quiet, private man, and enjoyed helping those less fortunate, especially the elderly.
