Check road conditions with winter storm warning

MoDOT travler information map as of 5 a.m.

With a winter storm warning in place drivers are being advised to check road conditions before heading out the door.

The National Weather Service said the winter storm warning will remain in effect for northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas until 9 p.m.  Periods of snow, fleet and freezing rain are anticipated to continue through much of the day before coming to an end later this evening. The weather service has updated its snow and ice amounts to bring the heavier snow amounts a bit further south toward St. Joseph, Atchison and Bethany, where 4″ to 6″ of snow and sleet could fall. A band of icing was also anticipated to occur from the KC metro northeast toward Chillicothe and Milan. However, the potential is there for quite a bit of sleet to fall, and if too much sleet falls these snow and ice amounts will go down. Areas that see more than a tenth of an inch of ice could see tree damage and power outages due to very gusty winds later tonight.

The Missouri Department of Transportation is urging drivers to check road conditions using MoDOT’s traveler information map before heading out.  CLICK HERE to see the latest.

Both Directions of I-70 Closed in St Charles County Due to Flooding

image

JEFFERSON CITY – Both directions of Interstate 70 remain closed in St Charles County near Route 79 in St Peters due to rising flood waters from the Dardenne Creek. The eastbound lanes closed around noon Sunday, December 27 and the westbound lanes closed around 2:30 p.m.

It is expected that both the eastbound and westbound lanes will remain closed for Monday morning rush hour traffic.

Motorists who need to use eastbound I-70 in St Charles County can exit at Interstate 64 eastbound to Route 364 eastbound. Route 364 connects to Interstate 270 in St. Louis County and from there motorists can reconnect to Interstate 70. Westbound I-70 travelers will have to exit the highway at Route 94 in St Charles. They can take westbound Route 94 to westbound I-64 to connect back to I-70.

In addition, Interstate 49 remains closed in Carthage, Missouri. There are more than 180 roads closed across the state due to flooding.

Motorists need to watch for ponding water on highways and slow down.  If a road is closed due to flooding, do not drive through. Turn around and don’t drown. Gov. Nixon declares state of emergency in response to widespread and deadly flooding impacting much of Missouri

image

JEFFERSON CITY – Gov. Jay Nixon today declared a state of emergency in Missouri as heavy rain, flooding and flash flooding continue to impact much of the state. Heavy rains have led to widespread flooding and at least eight fatalities have been reported. More heavy rain and additional flooding is expected through Monday, and river levels are forecast to continue to rise over the next several days.

Since the latest round of severe weather began, the Missouri State Highway Patrol has conducted dozens of water rescues, and assisted in the evacuation of residents from flooded areas.  Multiple roadways have been closed due to floods and the Governor urged Missourians in flood-affected areas to avoid travel if possible.

“Widespread flooding and continued rainfall are causing very dangerous conditions across much of central and southern Missouri,” said Gov. Nixon. “Multiple fatalities due to flash flooding have already been reported, and I urge Missourians in flood-affected areas to stay alert, avoid travel if possible and never drive into a flooded roadway. With more heavy rain expected tonight and tomorrow, state emergency management personnel will be working around the clock to keep Missourians safe.”

The Governor also urged residents to use caution in northern Missouri, where snow and freezing rain are expected as temperatures drop and wind gusts increase.

The State Emergency Operations Center has been actively monitoring the storm system, and Gov. Nixon has been receiving updates from his emergency management team to assess the current weather situation and address local needs. The team includes senior officials from the Missouri Department of Public Safety, Missouri National Guard, Missouri State Highway Patrol and the State Emergency Management Agency. The Missouri State Emergency Operations Plan also has been activated, allowing state agencies to coordinate directly with local jurisdictions to provide emergency services.

The Governor urged residents of flood-affected areas of Missouri to pay close attention to weather warnings and follow the safety instructions of local officials as the potential for additional dangerous flooding continues. Missourians, especially motorists, are encouraged to remember these important safety tips on flooding and high water:

Do not walk through moving water. Six inches of moving water can make you fall. If you have to walk in water, walk where the water is not moving. Use a stick to check the firmness of the ground in front of you.
Do not drive into flooded areas. If floodwaters rise around your car, abandon the car and move to higher ground if you can do so safely. You and the vehicle can be quickly swept away. Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing loss of control and possible stalling.
A foot of water will float many vehicles. Two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles, including sport utility vehicles and pick-ups. Even if the water appears shallow enough to cross, don’t try it. Water hides dips in the road. Worse yet, there may be no road at all under the water. Flooding can scour away the entire road surface and a significant amount of ground beneath.
Missourians who need disaster information, shelter information, and referrals are urged to call 211. The 211 service is now available throughout Missouri.

Office warns of scammers taking advantage of the giving

ScamThe Livingston County Sheriff’s Office says scammers are working overtime around the Holiday trying to steal identities and money.

“Many residents have reported over the last two weeks about being contacted by several known scams about verifying credit card information to being sued by the IRS, which we have reported to you in the past,” said Sheriff Steve Cox.

He said scammers are hitting people up over the Christmas season.

“People are in a hurry, more giving, and more likely to have been using their credit or debit cards,” Cox said.

As of Thursday the office did not have anyone reporting they have been victimized.

“Most everyone has been quick to realize they were speaking with a criminal,” Cox said. “If you do become a victim and lose money, please report that to your local law enforcement agency.”

Sheriff’s Department hands out more than tickets

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department pulled many people over Wednesday but some were surprised to learn it was for reasons other than a ticket.

“We’re looking for people who might need a little extra help for Christmas,” said Col. Bill Puett. “Stopping cars looking for people who need a little help.”

$2,000 was donated by what the department is calling a Secret Santa to distribute to people in need.

Deputies spread out across Buchanan County stopping cars and individuals who looked like they could use a helping hand. The went from Easton to DeKalb, Rushville, Agency, and even in St. Joseph.

“We’re looking for people anywhere that might look like they need a little help,” Puett said.

Puett said the program is a huge excitement for the department.

“We do the Adopt-A-Family program, we try to help out in anyway we can,” Puett said. “This is just another avenue that we’re able to help out the community.”

The St. Joseph Police Department received a similar donation from an anonymous donor as well.
